Record yourself singing something regularly before you do the exercises and record again after. Just one exercise was mind blowing to me. Thanks Charmaine!
What a timely video. I was literally going to ask some questions in the FB group about using a straw. I recently saw singer on IG promoting a vocal straw and it's quite expensive. I was wondering if it was a gimmick. So, it sounds like the vocal straw phonation is legit but no need to spend a lot of money on a gold or silver straw when you can simply use penne pasta. LOL. Thanks Charmaine.
Haha! True! The only nice thing about those straw packages is that you often get multiple sizes to try. But you can absolutely source them yourself or just use what you have!
good day! i cant help but wonder how doing this exercise can improve my singing because when i actually sing, air is going to be coming out through my mouth which is bigger than the straw. doesn't that mean that there won't be that back pressure you were talking about?😢
Great question! Exercises that have back pressure like this one help to train the vocal cords and vocal muscles to work more efficiently once the back pressure is gone! In other words, they help to coordinate the voice so that it does what we want it to do more automatically!
I just discovered this exercise and I feel like I sound worse after trying it? My voice feels weaker and I can’t go as high as usual. I am singing into the straw but am I doing it wrong? 🤔 is my voice supposed to sound worse when I am just getting started with these?
Hi Maureen! It could be that you are pushing/straining too much as you sing into the straw, which wears the voice out. Try relaxing more, and if it's still feeling worse afterwards, just don't do the straw technique - there are many other exercises that work well for the voice!
Hi, found your channel though I'm looking for a speech coach. I do like to sing, do you think these exercises will improve my speaking voice by doing them as well as my singing voice?
You definitely want to take it easy if you're dealing with an inflamed or sore voice. Never sing on a sore voice. But, if you're coming back from sickness, absolutely yes, this can be a gentle way to give your voice some exercise and regain that strength-just always be mindful to not push past any soreness!
I wanted to ask does menopause cause your higher register to become weaker? When i use the straw i can hit G6 or G4, but without it ,my voice feels like its weak lately. Does menopause cause this?
Menopause can affect the voice yes - but don't be concerned about it being a lasting effect! Give the voice lots of rest, healthy food and nutrients, exercise, etc. - and strategic vocal training to strengthen the voice is also so helpful!
You're probably doing it right, but just needs more practice! The voice can often be shaky when it's in development, and this is a technique that often shows where the voice is vulnerable!
I didn't get into that in this particular video, but I love straw singing in water as well! Both are great - if I have water and a straw then I typically use that as a warmup/warmdown!

Before menopause i sing like Minnie Riperton. After now its there but my middle voice has been a problem.
Mix voice exercises to strengthen your vocal transition spot will be especially useful!
@@worshipvocalist 👍 Thank you 🙏 so much! Sounds like wonderful advice, I will certainly try this, and I will let you know how it works for me 😀.!

Yes they will improve the overall tone of the voice which will help with speaking!
Can you do this while you are sick?

Vocal cords not being symmetrical..interesting. I’ll give it a try Charmaine.
Yes give it a try and see how it goes!

@@worshipvocalist Okay!!! Thank you so much ☺️!!!!
Can I use a plastic straw instead of a metal one ?
For sure! Go for it!
Hi, I tried this, and I noticed that the sound that came out is like trembling when I tried singing a song. Am I doing it wrong?

@@worshipvocalist thanks! Appreciate it!
I wonder if I, when I was a child, was inadvertently getting training while playing a kazoo.
For sure!
hi i have a song on youtube call optimistic in this song is my air flow ok
Hi! I'm not able to offer free vocal analysis at this time but thanks for reaching out!
What is your experience, do you prefer Straw Singing or Lax Vox? What's the difference for you?
I didn't get into that in this particular video, but I love straw singing in water as well! Both are great - if I have water and a straw then I typically use that as a warmup/warmdown!
Yes I agree 💯, and it’s disheartening.
Keep practicing and you will improve!
