Genuinely one of the best British ballads ever. From the unmistakable drum intro onwards it never misses a beat. The tune is gorgeous, with the string section giving it a touch of class and the lyrics are superb. Front and centre, though is Chas Hodges with probably his best vocal performance, a mixture of longing and bitterness delivered with real style. One of my favourite songs that still hits the spot after all these years
They say the music represents the people of the day. This was a time when we didn’t take ourselves too serious. I used to play this to my wife and mother-in-law they loved it. 😅
Possibly thee anthem to all married blokes around the world with ever single word sung with sincerity by Chas and Dave a couple legends from our once fantastic country Great Britain.
Its the mid 1980s and im in a pub down bermondsey on a Saturday night and this fantastic song comes on and everyone in the pub sang along. Happy memories...❤❤
Their documentary was a brilliant eye opener (at least for me). Fantastic musicians with great credentials...plus one of the greatest pop couplets appears in this very song: '...And if you think I don't mean what I say and I'm only bluffin', you've got another thing coming, I'm telling you that for nothin...' after writing that, I think I'd take the afternoon off!
I was in Oxford in 1982 and this song was playing up and down in every pub. I loved this song and back in Germany it was never on the radio. I was glued to my recorder every day, hoping to hear it. And sure enough, one night around 3am, a radio presenter was playing special, unknown songs from all over the world. And he played this great song. Man, what an experience. It was fantastic. At that moment, I felt like I was back in the same pub after about ten years, listening to ‘Ain't no pleasing you’ and sitting there until ‘Last Order’. It was a wonderful feeling.
I hzve been given a personally signed vynil copy of heaven knows for Christmas and cant wait to play it. Have to wait til the wife is out so i can wind it up
I agree but by your username you’re probably British and the funny thing is back in the day. Somebody tight was somebody that was drunk or had a skinful or maybe you mean that as well😂

Chas and Dave were actually very competent musicians
I still love this song, after many years. Can never get sick of it, and it's played on our radio station too!
The more I listen to this and the background strings, the more I love it. A great song.
Chas & Dave 😮😮😮 Get In! ❤
Love the way Dave comes in to contrast Chas's voice especially at 1.32. This is a classic.
My Dad loved this ❤

working class music for the people
Pardon?
Music doesn't have a class. It's either a sound you like or don't.
@@Fercough what he means is that this music stems from a very working class background.

Memories with my old man. R. I. P DAD X
Such a diversity from their usual rough and raw pub Rockney sound.
Chas and Dave polished up with strings for commercialism. To ensure a top ten hit
You're so right . 'Polished up with strings for commercialism. To ensure a top ten hit'
Great tune and lyrics. Dedicated to all of us who ain t going to be made to look a fool no more.
Pure class

The b-side of this track (give it some stick mick) inspired me to play the drums. I was lucky enough to meet Chas and thank him for the music.

Chas and Dave scrubbed up and polished with a string accompanienent. To enable them to have a Commercial top ten hit.
