Minelab Manticore Metal Detector Tutorial Target Trace and ID Map

  • Welcome to the ID and Target Trace Tutorial.
    On your map you have a target ID it range from 0 to 99. Targets detected will have an ID of 1 for less conductive ranging all the way up to 99 for more conductive.
    You will see how ferrous your target is being classified. The further from the center line, the more ferrous the target is being classified.
    This is your ID map section, within this you will see your
    Ferrous limits,
    When you detect a target you will see a black dot or smudge. The Opacity of the dot actually determines the signal strength. The darker the dot the stronger the signal strength is.
    You will also see your Discrimination pattern.
    When using a single frequency, there is not enough information to plot the conductive and a ferrous properties, therefore the map is simplified. The Ferrous Limits is disabled. Non ferrous targets will only appear on the center line and the ferrous will be lower to the left. In single frequency the target ID range will be 0-99 for non ferrous and 1-19 for ferrous, with a red ferrous indicator.
    Target Trace is a feature that’s worth taking the time to learn. Most targets will give you a distinctive Trace.
    The Target Trace will fade after 5 seconds, just like the Target ID does after you detect a target.
    The factors that can affect the Target Trace shape, along with where the trace falls on the Map are, Metallic composition, complexity, orientation, depth, swing rate and your frequency settings.
    Non ferrous coins will show up as a black dot on the centre line. Less conductive coins like cut or hammered coins will show up more to the left, high conductive coins such as large silver, will show up to the right. Those countries who use ferrous coins, they will not appear on the centre line.
    More complex targets that have ferrous and non ferrous properties such as bottle caps will appear further from the centre line but orientation will affect its targets trace.
    There are junk targets that can appear on the centre line. Example an aluminum pull tab, They look similar to coin with a distinctive round dot, I did notice in many cases my dot was slightly elongated at times, allowing me to identify them. I dug them out anyway as there is always a small chance of gold reacting similar or you can just use your discrimination pattern to no longer hear them. Doing this, you may still miss targets that share the same Target ID but it’s a great option to use when you want to focus on more desirable finds.
    Ground Noise Target Trace, ground noise is caused by hot or mineralized ground that contains a lot of iron. This is a good indication that you may need to Ground Balance or reduce your Sensitivity to deal with your ground conditions.
    Bottle caps usually appear in the Lower Preset Ferrous Limits. The preset was designed to capture them and classify them as ferrous. If bottle caps are found outside of these limits, they can be adjusted.
    How orientation will affect your Target Trace. As an example they use a bottle cap.
    A common beer bottle cap,
    If the bottle is lying 45 degrees, the Trace will appear elongated, the detector is seeing the flat shape and narrow sides of object. Which tends to show up in the upper ferrous limits. If you tilt the bottle cap on edge, the detector sees little of the flat surface, therefore appearing in the Upper Ferrous Limits.
    EMI electro magnetic interference can also leave a trace, it appears around 0-2 and can be accompanied by a scattered trace.
    Now we will look at ferrous large and complex shaped targets. They can often create unusual shaped trace and very with orientation.
    An example is a bolt it has a cylindrical shape and the bolt head giving highly conductive properties. In some orientations it can cause the trace to slant down and to the right from the upper ferrous region into the non ferrous region. Sweeping the target from different directions, while checking the target trace can provide a better indication of its ferrous properties.
    A thick rusted iron bolt falsifying in one orientation
    The same bolt checked from a different angle.
    Now let’s look at a low conductive, or weaker target that is being masked or dominated by a close target. These will also create a unique target trace. As an example a low conductor coin next to a stronger or more dominating iron signal. You will notice how the stronger signal will draw up the weaker signal but detect a non ferrous response as well.
    Lets look at low conductor coin buried deep in mineralized ground. Mineralized ground creates a challenge for discrimination as the detector sees the target as a mixture of signals from the target and the ground response. This can cause a trace in the upper ferrous limits, on the center line and in the lower ferrous limits, they can sometimes connect by a vertical line.

      It takes some time but my biggest advice to new people with the Manticore is not to boost sensitivity when you are trying to learn. In heavy trash I usually run between 18-20. Areas that are a bit quieter I boost it higher. Even at 22 I was hitting deep coins. Trust it’s powerful even at its default sensitivity.. it can false on iron a lot more when boosted.. but there is the stabilizer setting that can help quiet falsing down.

      @@RelicDirtyhands I wanted to post an update to my Manticore experience. I just got the M8 coil and I am now becoming impressed. I am getting better at using the Manticore and learning what works for me and finally getting some better results. I was going to sell the Manticore and keep the Legend but now I am not so sure. One of the features that I still like more about Legend is that it pairs to $10 ear buds and I do not need those huge head phones but I do see a better performance with Manticore. I am pretty sure the Manticore will become my go to detector.

    Awesome series, these have answered so many questions.
    I have seen those pesky aluminum pull tabs, that look so inviting in Multi-IQ mode. don't fare so well in the single-frequency modes. It stays on the center line but smears out due to the jumpy VDI numbers (unless it's on or close to the surface).
    The iron signals also may delay the beep as you swing over the center in both directions (like it signals a beep as you cross the far side halo area)

      I, unfortunately, do not own this machine yet, but I was watching a video that "Brass Medic" posted last Christmas called, "Minelab Manticore - Avoid Those Nails!". He demonstrated this phenomenon several times (4:10, 9:10). He compared it to something he learned from the CTX. Perhaps it was emphasized due to his settings.
      I'm curious if you can experience the same results.

    • @RelicDirtyhands

      @@danblankenship5744 the biggest problem I see is he wasn’t taking advantage of the ferrous indicator as he was using discrimination. In All metal he would have seen the red line ferrous indicator telling him that’s 100 percent ferrous. The shape on the ID screen, was telling me trash. I’ve seen many videos of people not using the machine correctly and calling it a bug. I’m curious how deep that first target was, items close to the surface give you that delay or double tap. It was hard as I couldn’t see his screen half the time. This is common with the Equinox and most detectors I’ve used when it comes to surface items. His swing rate was really slow, but I wish I saw the depth. I feel some TH-camrs are too much in a rush to create content before they know how to use a new machine. This creates miss information and frustration to many others. It sucks because when you use it right it’s incredible and so accurate. I didn’t watch it all, just the first bit ☺️

      @@RelicDirtyhands ummm i think that is very debatable. According to many who have and use both the legend and manticore there is only a slight advantage in depth and separation with manticore. @@RelicDirtyhands as i said. I am just repeating what those who use both have reported their opinions. Not knocking manticore. But those who do have and use both say there is not the huge difference in overall performance. Is manticore better? Maybe. Way better? No, and as most claim certainly not $1000 better. As for my own experience, i have been detecting for over45 yrs. I own several detectors that range from $500 to $1300. I also own the legend. I am so impressed with its performance that i am selling all my other higher priced detectors and i do not feel i need a manticore. By the way. Great video👍

    • @bennoah9780
      @bennoah9780 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RelicDirtyhands Reality is, I do not own a manticore so I have no right to say if it is good or bad. Likewise, if you do not have a Legend then you also have no right to say that the manticore is far superior as you can not possibly know that. Just because the Legend is 1/3 the price does not mean it cannot perform close to the manticore. Maybe it does, maybe it does not. The manticore is said to have small advantages over Legend. But the Legend also has two advantages over manticore. One huge advantage is $1000 less expensive, and 2 is I do not have to spend hours watching videos on how to tell what the screen is telling me which by the way is only marginally accurate on shallow targets. Im not saying manticore is not good, for sure it is, but so is Legend

    I just returned from another go with my Manticore with the Sens around 21. I detected the abandoned early 1800s church yard for about 1 1/2 - 2 hours in AT general, and then for a while in AT high conductors. I only got one diggable signal that rang about 13 round dot on center line, I was a little excited until I pulled up foil :(( . I would like to go back there with my Legend as I am pretty sure I will not come home empty handed. I am starting to loose hope with my Manticore. I am wondering if it is even working correctly since all it has been good at is finding shallow targets at 6 inches or less. I have found deeper targets with my Legend with the 6 inch coil. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this same thing with their Manticore ?

    • @RelicDirtyhands
      @RelicDirtyhands  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have you air or ground tested targets outdoors? Try a small silver, place it on the ground and keep raising the coil. It should hit it at a good depth. I haven’t heard of anyone else having this problem. You could call Minelab customer service and talk with someone there.

    • @bennoah9780

      Yes I have tested it with various objects, thin silver ring I found with my Legend, small gold ear rings and larger gold rings and various coins and also pull tabs and old nails just to see how it responded and I recorded the number for later reference. Seems like it gets good depth in an air test , but I am not finding even junk at more than 6 inches, in fact about 70-80 % of my finds with my Manticore I can get with my pinpointer before digging. It just worries me that I am not getting any deeper targets. I have been running with ground tracking on, Do you recommend running in that mode ?

It seems to get good depth in an air test but I would guess 70-80% of my targets I could get with my pin pointer before digging. I have not changed anything but the most basic of setting from the factory. It just worries me that I am not even getting junk and any respectful depth in dirt. I am running in Ground Tracking on. Do you think that could be causing an issue? And I wanted to thank you for taking the time to respond.

      @RelicDirtyhands  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bennoah9780 Oh good, so it seems to be working properly. I would need to have more information on site conditions to correctly answer your question on Ground Tracking. The Minelab Manticore is really stable in mineralized ground and rarely needs to be used. Places I would recommend using Ground Tracking is in extreme conditions. Example saltwater beaches, gold prospecting areas and some freshwater beaches with high levels of black sand. You use it In areas where you need to ground balance often. If your conditions are not like this, then turn it off. It’s best not to use the tracking on unless you need to keep ground balancing every few feet. I ground balance when I notice a bit of ground noise, the detector feels edgy. I find a spot with no targets, ground balance and it quiets it down. Usually at most of my sites it’s a low number, but it makes a difference. After sometime using it, you start to know when you need to increase or decrease sensitivity, when to increase or decrease recovery and when to ground balance. The default settings have a great balance to start with but it’s sophisticated and needs to be tweaked for site conditions.

    • @bennoah9780
      @bennoah9780 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RelicDirtyhands Thank You for taking the time to help me. I will try playing around with some of the settings and I will try my next hunt with a simple GB and tracking off. I have tried to avoid changing many setting since without a deeper knowledge of them I would likely just make things worse. The ground I hunt in I would say is just average minerals, not real high or low, The numbers usually like to settle in the 30s. I am okay with not finding great targets, but I can not figure out why I do not find anything at all at even 8 or 10 inches and there are plenty of things in our ground. I have found several rings and ear rings , many old and new coins and also junk with my Legend, but Manticore so far has shown me only a few newer coins and plenty of junk. I really like the machine and I will keep trying but if this thing does not start performing better than my pin pointer pretty soon I think I will just get rid of it. Thanks for all your help and you make very nice videos.
