    Asians in Asia are not as easily offended as Asian Americans, in fact most Asians would actually feel flattered to see foreigners trying and enjoying our traditional costumes as long as it's not intended to be disrespectful. .

      @Emily Li Everybody is racist to each other and that doesn’t excuse it, but it’s reality. Tons of Chinese people in mainland China are racist to foreigners. The same thing applies in America to Asian Americans. That doesn’t take away from foreigners wearing Chinese dresses or means cultural appropriation isn’t bullshit. Hell, if they’re wearing a Chinese dress or clothing, it usually means they would be the ones NOT being racist and appreciating Chinese culture. Your logic has so many holes in it, it blows my mind that you can’t reason these basic concepts to yourself.

    As a Chinese living in Asia, I can attest to the message this video is trying to convey. A Westerner wearing a Qipao for any social event is perfectly fine. As long as there is no malicious intent behind wearing that dress, it's all cool.

      Nobody is right in this situation. First, those 网友 should never so overreact like that, but the way Chinese culture be miss understand was truly a big problem, it is just not that lady's fault.
      So this is another complicated issue that happened all the time, and it is no way to really solve it. If anyone who tries to defend their stand here will get the things out of control because this is not a real issue, is just an image of normalcy.
      The way Winston has much hate from China is because he does not have the Chinese ideology and even play against it. Although he makes many videos talking about something like 'face' and 'avoid conversation' things, but there are reasons for it. Chinese have those cultural for thousand's years and Winston did not have a deep discussion about it.
      Don't try to shape the society because the society shapes you initially, unless you are a saint.

      Mark Sullivan I remember seeing serpentza and C-milk poking fun at manspreading a while back. Right then I knew they didn’t follow that kind of nonsensical... nonsense. Thank god. All this weird moral policing irritates the fuck out of me.
      If someone doesn’t want to wear foreign clothing out of fear of offending someone, fine, I don’t care. But don’t force people to follow along. That’s where you lose me. Social awareness is generally a good thing, but their sadistic fetish of smearing anyone who thinks slightly differently about damn near anything almost makes me ashamed to call myself a liberal. Puritans, every one of them. Anyone who dares think differently and voice their opinion is devoured by the perpetually offended, including their own.

    The only reason that dude was offended was because he's American and has been influenced by western society and their sad mindset. Almost every country you visit, aside from America, will try to get you in their traditional dress or have you participate in ceremonies. Africa, Philippines, China, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Japan. All are happy to share their culture. Now, I must disclose I'm American. But I'm educated.

      Liberals are not truly offended imho, it's all an act, mere manipulation in their path to power, their religion, their righteousness -of-choice, their claim to supremacy over you, all about victimhood, with them as the saviors. To pull it off, they have to pretend that human appreciation is unreal. Thus they see (and pursue) a world devoid of love, that's why they resonate with ISIS.

      garyha yeah - a little too much generalization. There is no big plan with liberals, conservatives, etc. Just a few over zealous busy bodies, who want to make everyone live the way they feel is right. Doesn't matter the political views. Meddlesome people, status seekers and busy bodies inhabit all cultures, spectrums, and walks of life. They are the sycophants, insecure, and power hungry.

Although this one comes with even more wide-spread generalization: Toxoplasma Gondii infection in the brain, the rock star of microscopic zombie parasites (see, Patrick Star is shaped like Tgondii, get it, these microbes have some sort of group intel to them, enough to make themselves portrayed on an animated TV show, it's a hint and we're supposed to figure it out or they just like taunting humans). I am ABC and I say that ranting about "cultural appropriation" is calling for cultural segregation. As long as people have interacting, which is since the beginning of the existence of humans, we have adopted the good regardless of its origin. That is a natural and very good thing. That is how people improve their lives.
      I suspect that Jeremy Lam (the guy that famously ranted about the Utah girl) is an angry Marxist sociology major that is bitter about not being able to find a job in his field after racking up $80k in student loan debt. His rants do remind me of the Marxist nuts in college that few people took seriously back then.

When attending at temple or culture events I wear clothing of Indian manufacture and design. Kurta Pyjama , Dhoti , Sherwani , etc.shopping at my local 'Little India " stores , receiving expert advice on styles , accessories and such. Of course I have been met with curiosity from Indians and desi. who are amazed by my interest and knowledge of their homeland. I have not had any criticism or negative comments from anyone ( At least not to my face ) And never accused of the sin of "Cultural Appropriation ". However I sometimes wear Indian attire to a non-Indian / western event and have been accused of "Cultural Appropriation. by so called Social Justice Warriors ( Always White People ) who are offended and seek to inform me of my error. I have noticed over the years that Non-Westerners who dress in American / European styles are seen as advanced and progressive , where as those of us westerners who prefer non-western attire having "Gone Native" are scorned for our "Cultural Insensitivity"

      Last I checked "culture appropriation" is just diversity and peoples tastes spreading worldwide. So yes cultural appreciation :) I don't think anybody cares if people outside of America wear t-shirts for example. An American invention; otherwise would be considered cultural appropriation by the standard set by people claiming Americans wearing Chinese dresses is appropriating culture. What about all those college kids dressing in togas? That must be cultural appropriation! Without appropriation we'd be slowing our development down as a human race. The real racists are the ones claiming cultural appropriation; sounds like segregation to me.

      The point is not about wearing someone's culture. The main point is that POC are mocked and made to feel uncomfortable for wearing their own ethnic and cultural clothes. And then when wheat wear it suddenly it's cool and a fashion statement. Nobody gives a damn if you want to wear someone culture. Just make sure you are respectable to the people whose culture you love to appropriate. How fucking difficult is to understand that?

    I agree with you. From my opinion, usually people screaming and shouting cultural appropriation are those (usually in American) that don't understand their own culture or the culture they think other people is appropriating it. They have low conference or self-esteem as if a foreigner is more cultural that him/her on his/her own culture, it reflect their ignorant and loose face.
    That is totally opposite in my case. As someone who is working on hanfu/汉服 revival activity, we understand that qipao is not our (han or 汉族)traditional clothing and try to avoid it and only wear hanfu, because wearing qipao ourself is also kinda like appropriation of Manchurian (满族)culture. Too bad, foreigner don't wear hanfu and thought that it is something from cosplay, else we would praise them instead of bashing them.

    In fiction writing class a girl told me I had no write from a woman's pov because I wasn't a woman, that I was engaged in both gender and cultural appropriation. I laughed because I thought she was joking. As a result, she tried to have be written up for "microaggressing" her. That was the first time I'd heard of microaggression and safe-spaces. This was on a college campus in the United States. We were legally adults.

    • @mike4ty4
      @mike4ty4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But if you make it all written from male POVs, then aren't you just contributing to the overrepresentation of male POVs in the culture and the prevalence of male POV-written works? Or worse, if you have to write from a "male pov" what exactly does that mean? Does that mean a stereotypical patriarch male pov where you have to depict the women as sex objects or through a "male gaze" as it's often called? Isn't that then something which will promote discriminating messages in the culture? And to even write a female character at all, don't you kind of have to write at least a _bit_ from their "pov"? At least if you want them to be a realistic, _human_ character and not just a caircature? And isn't that what you need if you want to _not_ have "sexism"? And if you don't write any female characters at all, wouldn't you call that work ... "sexist"?
      See, the problem is that these doctrines, when taken to extreme all-or-nothing ends, end up becoming logically contradictory to each other and jointly unsatisfiable, and there's never been a good explanatory piece arguing how exactly this is supposed to be reconciled. In _moderate_ forms, they may have valid points, but when taken to extreme they become _logically contradictory_ meaning that an absurdity occurs from which follows everything and anything including a HEADPOP

    • @mike4ty4
      @mike4ty4 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @神州 Shenzhou Well I believe though that in a relationship _neither_ should "dominate". It should be about the two as _equals_ and companions. Where does that put me in terms of ideology, anyways?

    • @toddboothbee1361
      @toddboothbee1361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mike4ty4 I agree. My view of art, such as literary writing, is that it isn't the servant to political fashions. That's an ideal vision, of course. Another ideal I have is that I am a writer, not a penis, and I refuse to restrict my writing to someone else's prejudices, no matter how fashionably justified it is to a narrow few in this current, transient cultural moment. I do sometimes write from a female character's pov and I find this possible and successful because I begin with a human being, not a vagina. I've known women all my life: they've raised me, loved me, mentored me, some have hated me and have been my enemies. Hmmm...in these and many other ways they are like men, that is, they are human. Some are stupid, some are geniuses. Some are thoughtless bigots, others have a deep sense of humanity and its flaws and powers. Writing, at least for this writer, is less about shoving my pet answers about life into peoples heads as much as it is exploratory thought. Freedom is required for this. That freedom begins at the individual level, for example, when you decide to be deeply honest about what you feel and what you know, and to work from there, and sometimes to be willing to tell even the best intentioned and most aggrieved to screw off.

      I'd say most people outside the US are like that. I've noticed it's mostly Americans who seem to be hyper focussed on ethnicity. I'm 99% sure that if you asked a Dutchman or a German this same question about traditional dress they would not understand that ethnicity might be a factor either.
      By the way I think you're absolutely right about others wanting to wear your 'cultural/historical dress' being a compliment. If suddenly traditional Dutch dress would become popular in China and they'd all start walking around in it, I would just be amused by that, and maybe even flattered. But not in a million years would I feel they were 'stealing my culture'. It's such a strange concept when you think about it.

    • @StochasticUniverse
      @StochasticUniverse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PixieElixir But in practice, that's almost a logical impossibility, since any act of practicing a culture is just helping it spread. As long as you're accurately portraying it, there's no such thing as bad publicity because any act of invoking the culture, whether it be by practicing it or even just stating facts about it, is helping knowledge of it spread.
      The only way to "commit a crime against culture", which is basically what you're talking about, is to mischaracterize that culture with libels and slander. So, for example, if you said that jihad is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, that would be a misinterpretation that asserts something that is factually wrong about that culture. But simply wearing a hijab would not, in itself, represent a malicious or distorting act towards the culture (and in fact, a woman would be required to do so if she were going to enter a mosque -- it would not be optional).
      Since the woman in this video didn't do anything to misrepresent Chinese culture, she's cleared of all thought crimes. =P May the Inquisition grind onward!

      Real cultural appropriation is a dominate culture selling a bastardized version of a minority culture. It is a real problem and extremely damaging to minorities. Being infatuated with another culture and buying clothing from said culture is not appropriation as long as it is worn within context. Some cultures are considered closed to outsiders and were never traditionally shared with outsides unless welcomed in through marriage or adoption-- my bf is from a culture like this-- and even then I cannot take apart in the tattoo rituals of his culture because it is closed to people who have that ethnic blood only. The vast majority of cultures are not like this at all. Chinese, japanese, middle eastern, and most western cultures are considered open for anyone to practice.

I saw a news a couple of years ago criticizing a model who wore “Kimono”, a traditional Japanese dress for females, because the west thought that was racially offensive and ignorant for our culture. Yet, there was no such a hot argument in Japan back in that moment. Honestly, we don’t think of those who from different cultures or nationalities trying out our cultures as offensive. Rather we do welcome these cross cultural exchanges as the Chinese people said they are fine with the foreigners enjoying a part of Chinese cultures in this short clip. At first, I thought of me not taking this seriously as an ignorant Asian being edged out of the discussion, but it turns out, as these videos capturing actual voices from actual people come out, I do think I’m fine and also cool with this phenomenon.

      I know this is a little old now but, That's the funny thing. I've heard that it's not about the people who come from Asia but it's the people growing up in America with Asian heritage who are the minority group here, they are the ones that feel the whites are not taking that culture seriously when wearing these things. Their perspective is "Don't kid yourself, you know nothing about my heritage, how dare you just strut around in something from my grandparent's homeland without understanding anything about it?"
      I can see how that feeling comes up. I can also see how the opposite doesn't hold true with modern western clothing because we essentially expressly exported that stuff to everywhere on purpose back in the day. Our whole paradigm is about that.
      The valid argument might be if in Asia someone was wearing some German Leiderhosen type thing cuz they saw it in a catalogue, and thinking it made them look cool, and German immigrants were like "hey that's not how you're supposed to do it." Sure The Germans in Germany would be like "lol that's cool, whatever, we don't care."
      In either case,doesn't really matter. If people are not really appreciating a culture that's their problem and you can be upset by that if they are, you know, causing damage or spreading hate or misinformation but that doesn't mean wearing a Qipao or a Kimono or anything else from anywhere else requires a certain level of "appreciation" before it's acceptable to wear. Society can judge you a tool without needing a name for it.

      Is it childish to state a truth? What kind of superiority complex must you have to refer to the minds of people you know the littlest about "tiny"?

      Now it is pathetic and shallow to state a truth? And I guess you aren't going to be able to tone down that superiority complex.
