The fact that the police support these scammers is just another reason on the long list of the many reasons why to never visit China as a non-Chinese person. Your comment was 4 years ago, and the hatred and animosity towards foreigners has only grown during that time. Have you seen recent videos? I've seen school children in China be asked "What do you hate the most?", with the 4th grader replying "I hate the U.S. and Japan the most, when I grow up I want to kill them". And that behavior is encouraged. Why should I enable a country with my tourism money which will partly go towards the funding of this hateful ideology in children?
I can only hope that those who have not been entirely brainwashed can make it out of that communist country before it is too late for them to do so.

When I was in the Shanghai bund area, I was approached by a few of these scammers. I used them to practice my Chinese, I was a bit nervous to speak, but after walking around for a bit I got about 1-2 hours of basic conversation practice all up.
They would approach me, I would agree to whatever they said and started walking with them (just along the bund), then start talking Chinese, and have a bit of back and forth. Most of the time after 5-10 minutes I think they realised I was too aware to be scammed and left. But another would approach me in a few minutes. It really helped me gain a bit more confidence in my language skills.

Lol this tea house scam happened to us. We were a group of fellas roaming around tianenmen and this two ladies approached us saying hi and introduced them as English teachers in a school. They were looking nice, not so young, modestly dressed and with no make ups. Since we have some women in our team they became pretty close with them, and invited us for coffee. ( I guess it's this same tea house in this video.) These ladies were sharing the things they know about our country, praising the women in our team for their achievements in their professional and personal life, n chatting interesting stuffs. They asked us what we need and ordered for coffee for all. We were all talking taking pictures together and enjoying the coffee. And when the bill came, they told us the amount looking at it and were waiting for us to pay the bill. And one women from our team started to create a scene telling them to pay the bill cos its them invited us. They were being silent and acted stupid and dumb. Somehow we just managed to collect the money and settle the bill. Each of us had to pay around 40 rmb something.

I arrived in Hong Kong late in the evening, a cab took my friend and myself to the Mariners Club in Kowloon. I went to a bar named The Four Sisters and had a beer or two. I met a couple of really drunk English guys who told me they were English Teachers, this was in the mid 1980's and I had never heard of "English Teachers" who were just ordinary English speaking people with no teaching training or experience before. They said they taught "Conversational English" so they only had to be able to talk English in order to qualify for their job.
One of the two whose name was Adrian, gave me a business card for a nearby Hotel and he told me he was being hired to manage the bar there in the next couple of weeks and he said I should go there and have a beer and check it out.
It was late already but after Adrian and his pal left and I finished my beer, I decided to go check out that Hotel, which Adrian said was still open and had given me some simple directions to.
It was only a left turn down from the Four Sisters, straight along and through one set of lights and then the Hotel bar was downstairs on the left hand side of the street. The four sisters had been on my left after I turned down to my right when I left the Mariners Club, so everything was on my left that night after that first right turn.
Left from the Four Sisters, left when I "left" the four sisters, across a main street, still on the left and then down stairs of what looked like a modern high rise office building, it could have been a Hotel.
The bar was large and empty and the actual bar itself was a long narrow rectangle shape also to my left as I entered, Adrian was sitting with a Chinese girl at the very far end away from the entrance as I walked in, his friend was no longer with him and the girl who wasn't with him twenty minutes earlier when I met him, was very drunk.
I walked along and pulled up a bar stool next to Adrian and I ordered a beer. I was very surprised to see the bar because it didn't look anything like what you might expect someone with no experience to be offered the job of managing just because they spoke English. I would have imagined anyone managing a place like that to be well educated in Hotel Management with English as a second language, at least.
I had just poured my beer into a glass when the girl stumbled and almost fell down, her boob popped out of her low cut top and Adrian grabbed her arm and told me he'd have to talk to me later because he was taking her out of the bar.
That left me alone in that huge pub/bar so I just drank my one beer and paid for it then I stood up to leave and the barman started saying stuff in Chinese to me, I had no idea what he was saying and I told him that in English, my only language as I continued to walk along the bar to head for the door.
As I walked, only half way along the length of the bar, that barman began shouting something and other guys began heading over towards me and putting themselves in front of me while shouting and looking angry about something. I stopped for a second and asked somebody to speak English but nobody did. I said that somebody must speak English in this place and then I said, I know one of you speak English but I don't speak Chinese so I'm just going to tell you, I don't know what your problem is, I had One Beer which I paid for and now I'm leaving and you have no business with me, so let me get out of here and don't block my way and let me go.
They just didn't stop and began to crowd right in front of me and very close, that's when I yelled back at them and told them where to go, in English, with my Scottish accent, maybe that's why they didn't understand me?
This ended up with me dropping the boldest and closest of them who was right in my face yelling at the time. I called out that I didn't want to hurt anyone and wasn't looking for trouble but I told them to get out of my way and let me leave.
Before I could get to the end of the bar and turn right towards the door and the stairs leading up to the street, I had to drop another one of them and that gave me the space to make it up and through the door to the bottom of the stairs, there was one guy who ran up and turned around in front of me on the stairs and the rest were behind me shouting still but they weren't following me and I just told the guy in front of me that it was a bad spot for him to be in if I was going to have to get him out of my way because he wasn't in for a good landing if that happened on the stairs.
That guy decided just to step out of my way and I made it to the top of the stairs but just as I was walking out the front doors I had come in, a Police Van, just the same as they used to have in the U.K. came to a screeching halt right in front of me and the cops who were in it ran past me into the Hotel.
I just booted it off to my right, all the way back to the Mariner's Club and that was how my first night in Kowloon began and ended.
I never knew what had really happened, was Adrian working some scam with the Hotel Bar?
Did Adrian have a bar tab and tell them I was paying for it when he left almost as soon as I got there?
If it was a scam, why did they call the Police?
If it was a scam, were the Police in on it?
This story goes on, because we were stuck in Hong Kong when my friend was pickpocketed and lost his Passport, Plane ticket and all his American express cheques and his credit cards. We were stuck there for a month when we were supposedly just spending a day or two there before flying on to Bangkok.
Because of that, we had a few meetings with the local Police and Customs people in their offices and strangely, to me anyway, when we did make it to Thailand later, I was buying some food from a street vender who had a crowd around him and when I looked through the crowd, I saw the face of the white Policeman who had interviewed my friend and I a couple of times in Kowloon. When he seen me staring right back at him, he just vanished and I never seen him again.
We were just two U.K. expats, living in Canada who were both sailors and had decided to go on a vacation and see some places neither of us had ever seen before, so we decided while in a travel Agency in Toronto, to check out Thailand and Hong Kong on the way, we had no prior knowledge about Thailand and hoped to see temples and elephants and just step back in time in Asia, it sounded like it would be an amazing trip and it was, but had I known what the reality was, I would have been better prepared and probably given the bars in Kowloon a miss altogether, as well as Bangkok and Pattaya Beach and just headed straight for the little village on Koh Samui where we ended up for two months, in the first place.
We were used to rough areas, being from Glasgow and Liverpool and sailors to boot, but that's what we didn't want to experience on our Vacation, we wanted peace and rest and relaxation.

It's also similar in nature to the one where the girl approached him and then her friend and then they take him off to have a tea with the intention to do the same thing and then he saves a tourist about to be taken for the same hustle just moments after he is rejected when they realize he is recording the hustle for us.
I tend to meander off into long stories because to get the picture across, you need to, unless you make videos and tell them that way, which many people have suggested I should do.

I can't express my gratitude enough for all that you are teaching me about this culture. Im originally from Newark New Jersey USA and haven't been to hardly any place foreign. The furthers I've gone has been the beautiful Island of Puerto Rico where my Mom is from and I've been to Canada a couple times many years ago. Besides that just a few other states here in the U.S. One thing I'm well aware of is how sheltered we here in the U.S. are. Honestly many of us have very little knowledge and understanding of other cultures. We are raised in a country that is filled with so many blessings that most don't realize how truly fortunate we are. Even those amongst us that are of the class considered poor seem to have much more than those that are poor of other countries. I am ever so very grateful to have been fortunate enough to have been born here in USA. I find other cultures fascinating. Its so unfortunate about those persons that go about scamming others or taking advantage of those whom are not well versed about where they are and how things operate. I grew up in a very rough neighborhood in the projects in Newark N.J. it afforded plenty of street smarts. Yet even with all that I don't think I'm not above possibly being scammed. I unfortunately always have my "radar" up whenever I'm in unfamiliar territory. These videos you make are a serious educational experience. It give the real! Not surface touristy crap!!. Thank you sincerely. I hope one day to be in the position to travel abroad. It is something I really enjoy immensely. Godspeed mate and stay safe!!!

@@serpentza Well done Winston, I too lived in China for 15 years but I never learned the language as well as you did, partyly because I lived in a Tier 1 city and had a lot of Chinese friends who spoke English and so I wasn't as motivated to learn. In fact now that I've left China, I spend more time learning the lingo every day than I ever did while I lived there!! It's kind of cool to speak Chinese in my hometown when I meet Chinese people and they are usually taken aback when I speak to them. Very friendly people I must say.

Thanks, Winston. I was in Shanghai, at Nanjing Dong Road, waiting for my wife to come out of a store (she didn't want me to go in because she'd never get a good price if an American was in tow). Anyway, as I sat on a bench there, a pretty young Chinese lady started up a conversation with me. Somewhere along the conversation she asked if I had time for tea. I said, sorry, I'm just waiting for my wife to finish at that store over there. I have never seen anyone vanish so quickly in my life. I didn't know until my wife informed me upon her return, how risky those people are.
You go, Winston! You have a voice, and I'm glad you use it!

These scammers are predators and they see you as a piece of fresh meat than a real human being. As long as they realize there is no way they can eat you they just leave you immediately without saying even one more single word, which is unbelievably rude and of no respect at all. Simply think about how predators would show respect to a piece of meat, then you would not feel strange about their behaviors any more. But his can feel like a real shit cause one second ago they talked to you kindly and all of a sudden they treat you like you're nothing. I would suggest you tell them to go fuck themselves when they start talking to you the next time.
