Everything you talked about China is 100 percent accurate!!!!!Thanks a lot for your sharing.I'm Chinese, and I like all of your videos,no exception, cos you always tell the truth instead of keeping saying the positive side of China(most of the TH-camrs only comment China in a good way ). Who is scamming who?? Great job Homie!! Another eggcessful video. Thanks for keeping it real. I can't count how many times I have had scamming attempts on me in China and I agree with you. If you get scammed, you can only blame yourself.
If someone comes out of nowhere to me and suddenly is my best friend my radar gets triggered no matter what country I am in. I don't know you and unless I come up to you I don't want to know you so back off.
"If you get scammed, you can only blame yourself." His final statement said that it isn't your fault alone. It is China's fault as well for letting this happen.
Lee Xiong The scammers do this in all tourist cities in the world so it isn't just a Chinese oddity and why I said you really need to treat all people as if they are out to rob you and you should be fine. Really, only an idiot would be so accepting of anyone walking up to them and doing a "hey, sailor man, you come here often?" routine.
It's true that it's not just China's problem. All tourist zones would pull this kind of thing. They all prey on lack of knowledge or ignorance. I don't blame China, and I also don't blame the tourists, I blame everyone else, and the systems we have set up and go along with. It has deprived people enough to where they have a need to exploit others for gain because they lack or need something. Every person in earth who partakes in the system that creates these desperate, deprived and deceitful people are to blame.
you, sir, are brilliant, and an everyday hero. loudmouth locals should have some respect towards you for not only showing everyone an honest picture of china, but even defending the country against all sorts of rubbish, regardless whether it comes from the outside or inside. i bow to you. as a sign of respect, i bought both seasons of your 'conquering' series, and if you ever visit budapest, know that you have a friend here. : )
@@serpentza Well done Winston, I too lived in China for 15 years but I never learned the language as well as you did, partyly because I lived in a Tier 1 city and had a lot of Chinese friends who spoke English and so I wasn't as motivated to learn. In fact now that I've left China, I spend more time learning the lingo every day than I ever did while I lived there!! It's kind of cool to speak Chinese in my hometown when I meet Chinese people and they are usually taken aback when I speak to them. Very friendly people I must say.

Dude it’s so hard to believe that this kind of horrible things do actually exist. As a Chinese born people I was educated by my parents to always watch out for scammers when going out traveling. I got scammed in Beijing on a taxi (looks like a real taxi but was a fake one)as scammers there can tell that I’m not from the local area from my accent.... And this incident made Beijing my least favourite city on earth. I just realised that there are scammers who only approach foreign tourists, in such a nasty way.....

I must say I recently discovered this channel on Sunday and have been binge watching it, I love it! It is one of the very few channels these days that gives an insight to an interesting country with entertainment but with the educational aspect of it. Keep up the good work Winston! :D
When I was in the Shanghai bund area, I was approached by a few of these scammers. I used them to practice my Chinese, I was a bit nervous to speak, but after walking around for a bit I got about 1-2 hours of basic conversation practice all up. They would approach me, I would agree to whatever they said and started walking with them (just along the bund), then start talking Chinese, and have a bit of back and forth. Most of the time after 5-10 minutes I think they realised I was too aware to be scammed and left. But another would approach me in a few minutes. It really helped me gain a bit more confidence in my language skills.
Yes, I used to do this as well when I lived in Beijing! I'd stroll around Tiananmen Sq and Wangfujing street and practice my Chinese on the scammers who approached me lol!! They soon stopped approaching me as I became too familiar to them after living there 3 or 4 years!
If the police don't care probably because they have background (bribe polices to stay away). I found the shop owners name/email/phone and etc Information on Baidu. That tea shop has been there since 1993! As a local Beijing girl I have no idea this is happening. Thank you for making this vedio!🌺
Dude when the guy walked in and told the women "he is recording you" as you are leaving that place you should have spoken out in your best Chinese language. Let them know you speak good Chinese. That would have been hilarious.
Lol this tea house scam happened to us. We were a group of fellas roaming around tianenmen and this two ladies approached us saying hi and introduced them as English teachers in a school. They were looking nice, not so young, modestly dressed and with no make ups. Since we have some women in our team they became pretty close with them, and invited us for coffee. ( I guess it's this same tea house in this video.) These ladies were sharing the things they know about our country, praising the women in our team for their achievements in their professional and personal life, n chatting interesting stuffs. They asked us what we need and ordered for coffee for all. We were all talking taking pictures together and enjoying the coffee. And when the bill came, they told us the amount looking at it and were waiting for us to pay the bill. And one women from our team started to create a scene telling them to pay the bill cos its them invited us. They were being silent and acted stupid and dumb. Somehow we just managed to collect the money and settle the bill. Each of us had to pay around 40 rmb something.
I have watched a few of your videos before, but after watching this video and seeing the effort you go to in informing us about China, good and bad, I decided to support your Patreon. You are a real upstanding guy, and someone to look up to.

Great video, these scams are not only in China but everywhere. I went to New Delhi this year and as a European I couldn't walk anywhere without loads of scammers approaching me. They also work in packs! But the people were also very friendly and welcoming too.
Holy shit! The conversation makes me want to bang my head against a wall! "Hi! Where are you from" "Can you use chopsticks?" "The chopsticks are so difficult to use!" Props to Winston for really sounding like a standard foreigner in China especially when talking to Chinese people. It's just as painful as it is in real life ^^

China is very concerned with its image. Scams they turn a blind eye to. At the end of the day, no-one is really hurt, and people can say it's the victim's fault for being a stupid tourist. But murder... well that's not good for business. And if it's not good for business, then that crosses the line. In Nanjing there was ONE fight in a club the entire six months I was there in 2011, the next day, that club was shut down. It's since reopened, but it was closed for a few months.

I seldom comment, but I must say you've done the travelling public a great service. In my travels overseas and in America, I've been been the target of many scam attempts. My only defense is that I'm highly distrustful of friendly strangers that ask too many questions. Thank you making the effort to give credible, and solid advice. Your journalistic prowess is impeccable.
Been a professional journalist for 25 years, participated in some hidden camera work like this in the USA, and this is almost as good as it gets: quality sound, good enough video, captions, still frames identifying the perps, careful enough not to implicate others passing by. Entertaining and informative. That's what video journalism is about.

Or bikes driving next to luxury cars in traffic saying pay me now or il scratch all off your car and so on. But I have to say forigners are safe and never hustled Mabey just taxis also reason is police enforcement over here is strong they don't mess about when it comes to organised crime
Thanks, Winston. I was in Shanghai, at Nanjing Dong Road, waiting for my wife to come out of a store (she didn't want me to go in because she'd never get a good price if an American was in tow). Anyway, as I sat on a bench there, a pretty young Chinese lady started up a conversation with me. Somewhere along the conversation she asked if I had time for tea. I said, sorry, I'm just waiting for my wife to finish at that store over there. I have never seen anyone vanish so quickly in my life. I didn't know until my wife informed me upon her return, how risky those people are. You go, Winston! You have a voice, and I'm glad you use it!
These scammers are predators and they see you as a piece of fresh meat than a real human being. As long as they realize there is no way they can eat you they just leave you immediately without saying even one more single word, which is unbelievably rude and of no respect at all. Simply think about how predators would show respect to a piece of meat, then you would not feel strange about their behaviors any more. But his can feel like a real shit cause one second ago they talked to you kindly and all of a sudden they treat you like you're nothing. I would suggest you tell them to go fuck themselves when they start talking to you the next time.
serpentza imagine if u played the nerd and in shanghai comb your hair to the side, forget the cap and jacket. If it was in the West, where there's actually a rule of law, good luck trying to scam tourists by having a menu in 2 languages, with different content and pricing in them. I doubt any police or court will help the scammers get their money. This only works in China, where there is no real rule of law, and police and government officials are ridiculously corrupt.
The same thing in Mexico, some places in Spain, Italy and even France. Just because it's in Europe or America doesn't mean people don't take advantage of people.

It's kind of like saying the american "ya, whatever bro" mixed with the english "what of it?" with way less testosterone.
@@nickb1762 well this canadian was from my area so oddly enough, i can tell you what he was thinking based on that interaction. He was thinking "this man is either a huge pussy who got robbed by two tiny girls or the man is somehow trying to trick me away from hooking up with these hot chinese girls, im not sure which so i'll just agree and get him out of here" and right as he walks into the bar to sit down hes going to say "well this was a bad idea, i now see the error of my ways".

Wonderful - If it's a short word or two they probably won't be sure it's Chinese unless its spoken firmly and clearly with perfect tones. The English language is vast.
I was in Beijing from 93 to 2000. The rule of law back then was much better than now. I remember once Police called me and said they have caught a thief that stole my cars logo. I had not even made any police report. Now you get scummed within few yards of tien an men square. China needs to do something about it. Btw this was one of the best facts and clips you made. I watch almost all of your videos. Wish you all the best!
First of all scumming and culture are two different things. Scumming involves theft which is a crime. From the way the girls talk to winston I can clearly say that she is not Beijing Ren. They have moved from other provinces to Beijing and to tiananmen area just to scum people. Seven years I lived in Beijing i never felt unsafe and no body dared to scum people back then.
plus denmark is just a glorified saudi arabia. replace islam with your 'progressive' agenda and keep your oil. stay in your niche and you can be 小而美。China is not in your league for comparison. outside your niche, you really don't have much going for you other than getting your balls froze off lol
A friend of mine was tricked into going into a bar in China with a similar scam. When they handed him a bill for 2000 USD (he was fairly drunk) he straight up told them he wasn't going to pay. He kept refusing and the door man even broke a glass bottle and threatened to cut him. My friend said well you are just going to have to kill me cause I won't pay. Then he walked out the door. The truth is, the Chinese scammers were very lucky. My friend started having PTSD from his time in Iraq. If he was pushed anymore by the doorman he probably would have killed him and anyone else who jumped in. These scammers are scum and I really do hope that one day they scam the wrong person and get their teeth kicked in.

😄
"If you get scammed, you can only blame yourself."
His final statement said that it isn't your fault alone.
This video should go viral so everyone knows.

Often it can get much worse. But please note, although these are scams, they are generally not overly ambitious

Jakob Sødal - Yes, I do tend to be a bit verbose. However, I'm making an effort to be less ridiculous.
陳獨秀 - One man's brazen is another's confidence. As far as manipulative, one would have to have no agenda of malice to be "manipulated." It's more a "Ruse de Guerre."

I would suggest you tell them to go fuck themselves when they start talking to you the next time.
