    "Cube" is also an example of the risk of opening with twists, because then you have to live up to it. Offing the escape artist is a great way to signal danger, but you also are then forced to live up to the announced danger both for the traps and the skills of the other characters, or it will just be obvious plot armor.

  • @valerierosario491

    This list is interesting. I would add Ghost Ship. The opening feels like an early 80's movie-the pink letter title,the party in the cruise ship,the kind captain inviting a lonely little girl to dance with him. And then the wire rips.through all,and everyone except the little girl suddenly falls into pieces. Next thing,a salvage crew finds the abandoned ship,instructed by a mysterious stranger. All that in the first half hour. Not the best haunting film ever,but an attention grabber.

      That's a pretty run-of-the-mill "snapshot of what came prior to the main story"-intro like we see in so many horror movies. Not all that surprising or original in my book. It doesn't even really feel like a twist, since it hardly connects to the rest of the story at all.

    • @ryanstauffer119
      @ryanstauffer119 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@mightybitchy I wish the screenwriters would reveal the entire script of the canceled sequel even though they posted a few pages. They said how it would have been the first film in the franchise to take place in winter time which definitely would have been great to see Jason paint the snow with blood. It said in the script that while some teens were playing hockey on the frozen Crystal Lake, we would see that Whitney's body is under it thus having us find out that she did indeed die, which means Clay would have to be dead too. That would mean the 2009 film is the only film is the franchise where nobody survived at the end. Anyway, they also revealed that a drunk girl tries an old zip-line and Jason uses his machete to slice her in half as she comes down which truly sounds awesome. The title of the film was supposed to be "Camp Blood: The Death of Jason Voorhees". I'm surprised they would kill him off only in the second film of the reboot series, but perhaps they wanted to do it since it would have been the 13th film of the franchise. Then again, each time we think Jason is dead, he just keep coming back.

    • @LenGott8345
      @LenGott8345 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The 09 Friday film did what they never did with the original. Just have Jason be freakishly fast (I'm guesstimating he'd clock a 4.3 40 yard dash) and frighteningly smart (the way he had the entire place wired underground so he knew where they were based on what got tripped).
      09 recognized that you're not coming close to doing what the original did, which was pull off one of the greatest swerves in modern movie history. So you use his mother being killed as a launching point but not have it be IN THE MOVIE, as we go with Jason already at it and folks walking right toward it unknowingly.

  • @drummond13
    @drummond13 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    I mean, I don't think "people you first see in a horror movie turn out to be the first victims" is really a "twist". Also, in "What Keeps You Alive", Jackie being the antagonist wasn't really so much a "twist" as it was "the entire base premise of the movie". That would be like saying a "twist" in most Friday the 13th movies is that that guy with the mask is NOT, in fact, a hockey player.

    I'd have gone with Wes Craven's New Nightmare here for a few reasons...
    First, it's a beat for beat nod to the original that started it all. 84 starts with Tina's nightmare. 94 starts with Heather's nightmare which just happens to be the making of a new movie. Now where this differs is notable for two reasons. First, nobody died in 84 least not right away. In 94, two folks died right away which weren't confirmed until a little later on in the movie. Second, with 94 we got no opening credits like in 84. You're thrown right into it and left to figure out, what's reality versus what is her dreaming.
    I think Wes would go on to label it a 'Nightmare In Progress' when he broke this all down for Heather about midway through the movie and that's probably the best way to describe it all. A Nightmare In Progress that Heather's in the middle of that she's hoping isn't as bad as it's shaping out to be. I get why everyone loves the OG and yes, its place here is well warranted. But what Wes did in 94 to put a proper finishing touch on the Freddy/Nancy saga shouldn't be ignored. After all, if this doesn't hit we likely don't get Scream 2 years later.
