@@fishingistherapy The engine is 11 years old, but I have it since 2020 (when I bought an - used - inflatable boat with a road trailer and equipped with this Tohatsu). It has sailed only in the patagonian fresh water lakes, in summer times (here: december to march). A commentary: I fixed the engine at the transom with 4 bolts and nuts, just for safety: I don't want to loose the engine jumping the waves when the day become windy and we have to return.
Nice! That definitely speaks to the longevity of the outboard. I agree I also fixed my outboard to my jackplate to ensure it doesn't fall off, makes things safer.
They are very reliable outboards. Mine gets me everywhere I want to go efficiently, it's great on fuel as well. I have yet to take mine in saltwater. How do you flush yours after a saltwater trip?
2017 Tohatsu MFS30 owner here. I fish saltwater only (Portugal). At 450 engine hours the motor developed an oil leak (but never had any running issues). The retailer changed the entire engine block free of cost. The new block has been great so far (50 hours). Good motors.

I have a 2011 MFS20C carbureted 20hp, and it has been bulletproof. Starts every time with 1 to 3 pulls and takes less effort to pull start than the 15hp Evinrude 2 stroke I used to have. I have not had any issues getting parts, though I have only had to buy maintenance items (oil filters, water pump impellers, ect.). Really good motor in my opinion.
I bought a 2023 EFI model that I really enjoy. I runs forever on 3 gal of gas and is very dependable. I did not opt for an electric start. My only two complaints are that the idle is way too fast, and the shift lever is really flimsy. I may take the shift lever down to a fabrication shop and have one made from Aluminum for it.
Yes it is a very efficient outboard and I am sure those tweaks could make it just right for you. In my 2020 model I dont notice any flimsy shift lever, maybe thats a simple fix.
Just got My 20hp Tohatsu last week and am enjoying the wonderful honeymoon experience around the Salisbury,MD waterways. I am hoping that it takes great care of Me as I could have just gotten the Yamaha and been done with it, but wanted to see how good this brand really is based on the credible reputation they have, and of course the substantial cost savings. Hoping for the best!

Thanks for sharing your nice review video. After watching it, I think I'm going to buy one Tohatsu 20hp electric start & power tilt/trim. However I don't know what year of outboard I should buy. The year 2022, 2023 & 2024 are almost $4,000.00, but 2018 is less than $1,600.00.
I have the 2020 version fuel injection model which sips gas. Not sure about the 2018 but I'm nmsure you can't go wrong with any year, as long it fits your price range.
Good video…I own a 2016 20 mercury bought new with 0 hrs in 2019. The only issue I had was my spark plugs went bad at 200hrs. It’s under warranty but my mercury dealer is right down the road and being I was out of town I called them. It was only giving me 1/4 power. I checked all the simple things first but learned that if the plugs are dark with burnt looking oil on them it’s a indicator of water in fuel. Well I pulled both plugs and bingo. Installed the same plugs and 25hrs later till going strong again. My water separator did not show any signs of water but I change my water sep twice a year now. Those 20s are good motors. Once I put a SS prop on mine I gained 2 mph. I’m running a 9 pitch SS on a 15ft Alweld tunnel haul @ 23mph ish.
Nice! I have been contemplating getting a SS prop to reduce the slippage from the aluminum prop. I perform regular maintenance on mine as well. Running strong. Love those 20hp Mercury/Tohatsu's
I was about to comment that it’s almost 100% same as mercury. My ex roommate upgraded his Tohatsu 9.9 to a 20 using a mercury ecm and removing a baffle iron something like that. He fishes a restricted lake. I told him it would have been cheaper to buy the 20 and put the 9.9 stickers. Lol
🤣😅Right, it would have been cheaper to do that. Mercury and Tohatsu are the same thing under 30hp. But hey hopefully he enjoys his Merc 20hp, I mean Tohatsu 🤣
@@fishingistherapy It's a 2001 Carolina Skiff DLX. I paid $2000 for the bare hull, and about 200 for the little center console and windshield--unattached. Then I had to pay a guy to rig it up for me. It has been a solid boat, although it's bumpy in a chop. The engine is just right for the boat at about 150lbs.

Nice, I don't think you can go wrong with purchasing a motor like this. Tohatsu has been very reliable and easy to service. Yes I'm 1hr away from Rome, GA but I frequent the Coosa River often.
I originally did that but was informed that it outs undue stress on the cavitation plate and has even chipped the plate and caused stress cracks as the motor bounces up and down on the highway. Not sure which way is best, but I appreciate your advice. I will look further into both ways.
14ft Smoker Craft that I bought and overhauled last summer. Here is a short video on the overhaul. I'm new to boats and fished with electric motors to close out the season in PA. Nice! I'm glad my videos are helpful to you. In my opinion, the deep cycle you currently have will work. I actually have the majority of my electronics wired to my deep cycle along with my Tohatsu, and it works well. I love it because when underway my outboard will charge the battery, which then powers and charges my electronics like an alternator in a car....I can rely on it! Hope that helps.
Considereing 20 HP Honda or Tohatsu.... Both seems great. Honda looks better I think, but curious about the white version of Tohatsu (I have a white boat).
From my understanding the white tohatsu just like white trolling motors are salt water rated and have more protection form corrosion, other than that they are identical.

Just don't hit anything with it or the mid section will break in half. The metal is paper thin, that's why they are so light. The driveshaft is also smaller than my pinky finger.

Yes I have an external deep cyle battery i hook it to that runs all my electric i have hooked to my 5 gang switch panel. I have it setup under the rear seat hatch. Its a simple 2 ring terminal hook up direct to the battery. Also I would recommend electric eith power tilt so you dont have reach back and adjust it manually but it doesn't bother me to have to do it manually plus I have a manual jackplate that I can adjust on the fly. But I had the extra money I would get the power tilt and trim, just have to makensure your battery doesnt die because I have heard many people frustrate with not being able to tilt and trim or electric start on the water.
I have thought about it. Just concerned it may not help me as much and be worth the wholes drilled. How much performance improvement or holeshot did you gain or notice?
@@fishingistherapy no top end performance improvement but it did get keep the boat from dragging the back during acceleration. I have a 16 ft V Hull aluminum Tracker with a custom front deck. The motor is an old 40hp Evinrude tiller. i am a big guy so I think all that weight in the back made it worthwhile for me to add one. The prop is old as well.
@lukesmith32 Its a 9 pitch prop when running with a buddy or two. Rpms are at 6100 max. By myself it can overrev with a 9 pitch, when I know I'm running alone I switch to a 10p and run between 6000 to 6300, but I keep it right around 6100

Yes, every time, I only had it take a few pulls once when it was really cold and i believe that was due to operater error letting wayer into the fuel line, but since it has been even colder and still starts on first push or pull!. It has been very reliable!
@flyinphil42 I would always recommend a transom saver so that you don't compromise the transom when it bounces up and down on the highway. I lost a transom saver twice and towed home from a 2.5hr trip and a Savannah 5 hr trip and that bouncing and etc really stresses the transom, rather be safe, it's a simple addition for the added support and longevity.
@@fishingistherapy I was just wondering what the difference is between the conventional transom saver in your video and the new rubber block style transom savers that wedge in between the ram to support the power tilt.
Don't buy a Tohatsu, yes they are good outboards but the after market spare parts are a nightmare, my 50 needed a new reed value it was in stock but in Japan, it took over a mouth to arrive but missing a gasket so they were told by the outboard mechanic to send it by express air post, it took over a month so in total ten weeks to get the part!.
Man that's a tough pill to swallow. Been thinking about upgrading to a 30hp, is this Tohatsu outboards as a whole or just the 50hp issue with the part?

Bought a 23 model 20hp/4 from Plateau Marine in Tennessee. Love it. Pushes my old 16' Lowe Big John with little effort, in salt and fresh water.

I just bought a 25 Tohatsu for my 14 ft skiff. I'm also running a 9 pitch prop. This engine runs well so far.
I think it will run well for many years to come with basic regular maintenance! How much did you purchase your skiff for?

Yes that is correct. My battery has died twice while on 3 day camping trips and I pulled started without any issues.

What is your max rpm and current prop without the foil? Usually a foil is a bandaid for improper prop selection... doesn't help anything

Yes that is correct. The transom is 20 inches and the shaft is 21 inches.

Don't buy a Tohatsu, yes they are good outboards but the after market spare parts are a nightmare, my 50 needed a new reed value it was in stock but in Japan, it took over a mouth to arrive but missing a gasket so they were told by the outboard mechanic to send it by express air post, it took over a month so in total ten weeks to get the part!.
Man that's a tough pill to swallow. Been thinking about upgrading to a 30hp, is this Tohatsu outboards as a whole or just the 50hp issue with the part?
