The album is a masterpiece and this is the best song on it. Glad it popped up on my suggestions.
Really.. you think this is the best song? What about ‘England’ or ‘Written on the forehead’? For me those songs are the clear pinnacle of the record.
I was always saying “I love the sax solo” then a friend showed it wasn’t a sax. Still my favorite sax solo
This album made me book a trip to England.
The voice, the talent, the beauty... she just has it all. An extraordinary woman.
there is PJ and then there is the rest.........................
I cannot put into words how much this song gives me chills. I'm not even from England
same. fkin majik
Its like this was written for 2019...prescience is the mark of genius and PJ Harvey has it in buckets
Yeah, it's incredible how much this whole album works as well or better in 2019-20 as when it was originally recorded...
What a master she is
There is only one word that can accurately describe PJ Harvey: Master.
bator.
This is probably my favorite song from this record, just absolutely incredible lyricism. Every word is simultaneously filled with such longing and spite. PJ is still one of the absolute titans of rock music.
the way she balances love, frustration, anger, longing and spite in almost every word is truly unreal.
this is hardly rock
this and in the dark places. its 11 years ago and I still listen to this album regularly.
@@MephProduction this is P.J
One of the best songs written in the past ten years. Simple, yet stunningly beautiful.
agreed
2023 New LP and so fn excited like a kid again. Can't wait!
I was 24 and lost my mind when Dry came out and freaked out again when she performed Rid Of Me on Leno. Today she is just as amazing
She's my queen of rock
"quiver" sets off chills on my arms.
PJ Harvey, and her group of excellent subtle musicians, is the height of rock music right now..2012. This will be remembered.
I wish there was a 15 min extended version of this beautiful song.
Why does this make me so emotional
Goddamn Europeans, Take me back to beautiful England
And the grey, damp filthiness of ages,
And battered books and
Fog rolling down behind the mountains,
On the graveyards, and dead sea-captains.
Let me walk through the stinking alleys
To the music of drunken beatings,
Past the Thames River, glistening like gold
Hastily sold for nothing.
Let me watch night fall on the river,
The moon rise up and turn to silver,
The sky move,
The ocean shimmer,
The hedge shake,
The last living rose, quiver.
Like a fine wine, she gets better with age.
in every manner her art will live forever
I get goose bumps whenever I listen to this. As a matter of fact, I get goose bumps whenever I listen to many of her other songs too. This artist is just so beautifully real.
PJ is a true living rose 🌹, the best musician I’ve ever known. X
Are you close
2023 get excited for her new Album
I'm not sure exact date, love reading all the like minded comments for PJ!
For me this song is perfection in song writing. Like the whole Let England Shake album indeed. But what makes this one special to me: When you give a lot of shit about how your nation was involved in war and global injustice (which is totally justified for most of the western nations) then it´s still nice to show that you cannot escape a little love for your country and your mother tongue.
This woman can do anything🥰
A GODDESS OF MUSIC
this song will hold up for centuries
more than likely, while the crap that surrounds
us will fall back into the earth

SHE IS THE ONE AND ONLY … Rocked the House Her way
Such a picture painter
That bridge hits home with me, like no song has for a very, very long time. Thank you, PJ Harvey, for giving me the keys to my own soul.
when she kicks in ,
I love her voice very bluesy and folksy, the delicate pictures she paints with lyrics, love, pain is really soothing to the ears.
Well. I feel like a fool for not having picked up on this beautiful gem of an artist!
LOL, you probably have to live in England for a while to get the lyrics. 'Love it.
I will play this performance every day until I'm back home in England.
Can't believe how prophetic this song was...completely captures the mood of 2016 England and the brexit camp. She's beyond a genius
LOL, PJ Harvey wasn't pro Brexit and I think the first line of the song is a little sarcastic ;) The whole album is a reflection of the dying embers of the 'empire' mentality and England's place in the wider world diminishing.
David Riley never said she was Pro Brexit...she was simply capturing the mood of the Brexit crowd
+Helen Kate Greaves oh heeeeeeeeey ^_^ cheers to your great taste
Exactly. One of the main traits of her artistic genius is to be able to become different people, different voices. I doubt very much she's pro-brexit, but, like those of us that are, she sees this country's shame & beauty, its contradictions in peace & violence, tolerance & prejudice. She (her character) sees us warts & all, but cannot be anything other than English.
Dary Scott-Harper
Remind me would you, what was 'the mood of 2016 England and the Brexit camp'? It's just, I was there and nothing seems to be of particular note.
I cannot beleive this video only has 4500 views. I've watched it over 4000 times. Beautiful...
Absolutely the best!

Wonderful, especially the beginning with the guitar going crescendo. Great song I listen almost every day, when not the entire album!
Amazing album 🌹

Gorgeous
The brilliance of this piece of music is magnified by this performer in a way that produces goose bumps on the listener.
awwww... tks kiddo!
Got that Corina Round
Heart and soul sound🎯
Love it❤️
PJ’s work , speaks for itself 👊
So classy and sophisticated, from this which is more poetic with social commentary, to the more rocky "This is Love " or "Big Exit" just sheer perfection.
Wonderful
Great Song...
Amazing
Amen...(beautiful sentement :-)
One of the best 1st lines in the rock era: God damn Europeans, take me back to beautiful England.
Within the context of the rest of the song, yes, but if decontextualised for the sake of rhetoric, no; in which case, it's just plain ugly.
Nathan Hulse But the entire song fortifies what she says in the first line. It’s obvious that England is the Last Living Rose 🌹 and Europe is the recipient of what England hastily sells it “for nothing, NOTHING.” Written in May 2010, 6 years before BREXIT, this is the most anti-European Union song ever recorded.
@@wildmercuryfilms No, the words of the song are ironic : it presents a caricature of national chauvinism. Keep in mind the context of the entire album, which is a criticism of belligerant mentalities, militarism and effects of war. For example, in « The Glorious Land » (another ironic title), it says : « What is the glorious fruit of our land? / Its fruit is deformed children / What is the glorious fruit of our land? / Its fruit is orphaned children ». Then, beginning a song with « Goddamn Europeans », an insult, points out to what leads to conflicts... and war.
Sums up the problem... We all hear what we WANT to hear in lyrics. Let's just enjoy the song and her talent instead.
@@eericer but in The Glorious land the reason those children are deformed or orphaned is thanks to England being bombed, she's not being ironic, she talking about how the fruit (the children) of the glorious land (England) are suffering.
knowing about this song makes me feel better about me.
This song is a rolling stone
Love it🥀
grandioso!!!
Je t'adore tu es magnifique !
edubble :)
Oh yes, most definitely one of the best albums of this decade.
Polly takes on an amazing array of different personas, and I like every one, but this of all her forms is the best.
She is a midnight hair goddess.
looking forward Prague concert!!!!
Jesus, she's so good.
i adore that guitar line that begins at 1:39.
Me too..it's a great bridge.
wow exactly like it is on the record!

..shine on -you crazy black diamond ;~)
..so you are [not] a fan?
The only thing wrong with this song is that it should be twice as long. But it's quite perfect as it is, and PJ Harvey is the true Queen of England.
mick harvey is in everything!!
