    Your Friend has lent you a nice basic tractor, be nice to return in better shape...if it ever is wanted to be returned? Drop the Cast pan, pull the pistons , Hone the cylinders, new rings and lap the valves. Parts for 9n,2n.8n etc... are extremely cheap. $100.00 for a complete set of rings for all four cylinders. Be a nice video to see you giving this 75 year old tractor another 75 years of life. Enjoyed this clip, nicely done. Do not rebuild, but refresh.

      That is my long term plan. For now I just need to seal up the leak. The Ford manual has an interesting set of instructions on how to destructively remove the cylinder sleeves. I want to research rebuild kits from various online vendors as most are sourced from overseas suppliers and quality is an issue. Thanks for stopping by Brian!

    Fun project Matt. Some new rings would really help your situation a lot and wouldn't be that difficult to install. No need to "rebuild", just "refresh".

      Can’t disagree George. I might do that while the head is off.

    When we started taking apart the 3 wheel sprayer, the 300 Ford industrial had almost 3 gallons of water in the crankcase.. it was from condensation. Still frozen solid..so it got the all mighty IH 265 out of the old sprayer 👍😎

    The Old 8N will be a project that will be filled with promise. I had an old 9N that just ran and ran with little work after I totally rebuilt the engine and hydraulics...lol, not much to go wrong after that.

    • @mattthescrapwhisperer
      @mattthescrapwhisperer  ปีที่แล้ว

      This old 8N needs everything. The plan for now is to just seal up the head. Eventually I will give it a thorough overall, but for now I just need it up and running. Thanks Lloyd!

    Following with great interest as our "Stinky" the 8N, is doing the same thing.

      I’m curious if there are other “N” owners out there with the same problem as well. Thanks for stopping by Dave!

    I doubt your 8N was overheating - you were probably getting oil and PRESSURE in the radiator by the leaking of the head gasket. My 8N while running with the radiator cap removed, I would get a bubble every few seconds in the water in the radiator. New head gasket solved the problem ! It's important to know when you replace the head, If bolts are dry and rusty You are probably not torquing the head, you are just torquing the bolts Chase the threads and clean and oil the bolts so that you torque the head !

    It looks like you have it figured out. I like the Merc engine swap. I wonder if you could put a set of zommy headers coming out the side from under the sheetmetal!😂 stay safe my friend

    Hello, I have seen worse. Did you notice any ring grooves in the cylinder walls? Maybe be a good time to tube brush what you can of the oil and coolant passages as well. Be Well!

    • @mattthescrapwhisperer
      @mattthescrapwhisperer  ปีที่แล้ว

      No ridge and no ring grooves, but the cross hatch is pretty much gone. As for tube brushing, I'll address that in part 3. Thanks for stopping by!

    That was neat. How much does a head gasket cost?

    • @mattthescrapwhisperer
      @mattthescrapwhisperer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got mine through Arko Tractor Parts for $12.99 plus tax. The Copper Coat is more expensive than the gasket 😂👍

      tHanks @@mattthescrapwhisperer I ask because you walked us through the repair with such ease. Many people let time discourage their decisions.
      That tractor would of sat for years on end with me because I would of thought the parts, the machine work, the space.... Rather than just making the repair and have something that will last many hours.
      I suppose if you use the machine ever single day, then people would need to go all out on a rebuild.
      Very interesting. tHanks for the video
