You nailed it. I passed the Tech test 1 1/2 years ago and bought this radio for the same reasons. I'm now an Extra and have no plans to get another radio. This does everything I need and want.
Congratulations on extra! Sure is a great one. Almost want to buy another and keep in the box. For when needed. But for now my G90 is my POTA , emergency, mobile. I keep it on the box. And take it in a backpack. When I want to have fun. Congratulations again thanks for watching. Subscribe if you want. 73 brother have fun!
@user-cu9gd8nz3c Yes, have had no problems with the radio. I use it mostly for HF now (because I won a FTM 200D about a year ago, so that is my VHF & UHF radio now). A little over a year ago I did upgrade my HF antenna to a 4 (now 5) band vertical.
James, congratulations 🎉 so happy for you!! Good luck 🍀👍 Check out my other videos on this radio and others I use. I’ve had it for 3 years now. Use it everyday. Works and sounds great. Keep me posted when you pass your exam. 73
Yes it’s sad how even all these fancy dual band rigs don’t come with SSB or even CW. Some companies back in the day made 2 meter 6 meter rigs that were all mode. Seems that has grown out of favor. It’s a shame really. And people wonder why certain modes are quite.
Taking my test this Saturday. Got this thing sitting on the floor. Putting up a dipole and a J-pole. Joined the local radio club and they are helping me build them. Really hope I can get everything set up with no issues
I agree with your points but I would say not just for technicians IMHO it is a very good first HF rig. There is plenty of room for growth if you get it as a tech and I am sure everyone has heard it called a shack in the box which it is. If you are going to be an active HAM trust me you will have more than 1 rig or ht and several antennas because you will want to do different things or just want another new radio with up to date features. I have one of these plus several others and now I am thinking about the Kenwood TS-890s, if I buy it then the 991A will be my field radio along with my FT-891. I love being a HAM
I chose the ICOM IC-9100 with both optional Roofing Filters & the D-STAR Board. More output power on both VHF & UHF & best of all it's an ICOM with Dual receivers so I may listen to both VHF/UHF or an HF or VHF or UHF frequency at the same time in any mode. Try that with the FT-991A. {:>)
Thanks for your instroduction, I just passed Tech exam 2 weeks ago. I'm planning to get this FT-991A for 2m and 10m band first as well. What kind of antennas you recommend? I don't mind switch back and forth between these 2 bands.
@@JanusHao congratulations 🎈🍾 on passing your first exam. Antennas. Well for 2m and 70cm I use the Tram 1480 it’s been up for five years and no complaints. But if you’re looking for a Triband. With2,6,&70cm. The Diamond V2000A is great for getting on 6 m fm if you have 6 meter repeaters in your area. 10 meter SSB voice from28.300- 28.500 MHz. Well you can’t go wrong with the A99. You might have one already. Check out my community page on my channel here I put links for radios antennas and gear.
I’m grabbing one in the next day or two. I have my ticket. What is a good antenna to get HF. Nothing crazy just something to get in the air and get some contacts. Thanks great video.
Well that all depends on how much room you have. I use end fed wire antennas. For 80-10M. But if you’re just a technician and you’re just looking for 10 m The Antron A99 works good for 10,11,12,& 6 meter Fm.
@@mikecricket113 thanks for the info. Ya I got all the space I need. Just asking a couple of people who have the 991A what they are using. I’ll check out the one that you suggested. 73
@@Cbro-621 if you’re an 11 meter operator then you can go with the A99 And maybe Even a small beam and rotor. Maco V quad is lightweight enough for a RCA tv antenna rotor.
This radio is plagued with issues.... I have not had a consistent 3 months in the 3 years I owned it that it wasn't being repaired. Now that its out of warranty I am working on replacing the finals. Great radio but its not hearty enough to be reliable.
Thanks for the heads up. I bought mine in 2019. Have the original firmware never did an upgrade on that. Don’t really need to but knock on wood still running good.

Exactly what I wanted to hear
Scott is your 991a still working great and no issues?

Thanks. I’m taking my technician exam this coming Tuesday. I can’t wait. This is very useful information for me.

agree. would never consider another radio other than this. as almost all others are not all mode

I thought a Yaesu 857D was the perfect radio for a newly minted ham......and it was.
Shame they are not producing them anymore.
