Hi. Thanks for the video. Fantastic radio. Just ordered a 991A for install in my Ford Ranger along with a ATAS 120A antenna. Maybe overkill but should look awesome once complete. Can`t go past that beautiful waterfall display.
In the market for an HF radio since I passed my extra class exam. I’m leaning towards the 991a for a base shack in the box since I have an ftm200dr in my truck and the 991a does vhf/uhf and system fusion which I love.
I have one I use mainly for RX on the Ham bands. It's hooked up to a fibre glass, Thunderpole Galaxy 5/8th antenna on the chimney stack and the gain is excellent. Obviously I also use it on 11m.
I'm with you my bandwith brother! We should ALWAYS do the best we can to never scratch or mar a work of art. Hint... hint... i happen to be partial to the 991a. 73
Hi. Newbie question but I’m a bit confused. In the uk with a foundation licence can you use HF to transmit. As it seems when people from the US mention HF they always mention their extra class licence. I’m doing UK foundation in January and want to get this radio.
Interesting video Andreas. I quite like the idea of a radio change. Do you still have this 991A? I have an immaculate Icom 7300 that I would be interested in swapping?
Cant decide if i should return my dx10 for a 991a so far it seems like i will use 2meters the most and the dx10 seems like way too much gimmicky stuff that ill never use. Do you think i should keep it and just add a 2meter 440 unlockable rig or return it for a 991a, not enough experience to decide at this point thanks.
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones Ok, I didn't state the question correctly. I know that I need a power cable for the radio, a cable to the antenna and a cable for the power supply. What other cables would I need for simplex operation? I'm not trying to be dense, I want to sure to order everything at one shot. Thanks
I did something to change the waterfall funtion and the r/t showing up in the middle of the receive screen. I have used the menu key and see it says waterfall and I have selected it. But not seeing the waterfall only signal. Also when I tune the r/t moves across the screen when it used to stay in the middle. What am I doing wrong?
the R/T moves across the screen when the sweep is paused. pushing the sweep button until it beeps twice will center up the R/T in the middle of the screen. nice feature to be able to freeze the sweep that keeps the waterfall signal on and allows you to tune to that part of the spectrum just in case the signal drops out between transmissions. hope this helps.
Hi Andreas, what crimp connectors and size did you use to connect to the power supply? I assume they are sturdy and have a minimum of 25A curent rating? I will get my 991A tomorrow and evaluating options.
I like to put the wire in loops connectors I hammer the connector where it joins then add solder , the 991 is such a good radio in everything it does plus the back lit buttons look fantastic .
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones Thanks Andreas, indeed really excited to get the 991a! I asked them to double box it and package it nicely as per your other video, I think I know who you were talking about. So no particular brand of connector that you would recommend, or any advice from your experience on what to watch out for to avoid mistakes? I was considering either spade/loop connectors or making my own male banana plugs but the latter seems a bit more work. M7BAL
You forgot two most important shack in the boxes which were the kenwood ts-2000 and the Yaesu ft-847 no digital but nice old shack in the boxes. The ts-2000 does things that even today’s radios don’t do just doesn’t have D-star or c4fm.
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones but here’s my dilemma I just bought a yaesue ftm 500 for my vhf/uhf base… plus a few ten meter radios.. I kinda like my ft500… how does the ft710 stack up ? Against 991a
Pushing buttons doesn't really teach a 'beginner' what you're doing...I can push buttons too....But understanding what the buttons are accomplishing is far more important.... Nice radio.... More bells and whistles than this beginner requires though...
This radio in 2023 is still a fantastic radio and a good buy!
Thsnks
Just ordered one!
0:20 FYI - in some markets (e.g. USA, Canada), the V/UHF Antenna socket is "M" (SO-239) just like the HF+6m socket. For Europe it's "N".
Thanks
Thank you. Was going to ask about that because I have a US model

I think it's the best choice .
Glad to have 991a and 7300 such possibilities to have!
Yes both happy times

It's such a good around set and looks great .
Your dog(s) made me jump thinking it was my dog. Great video, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
HP 750w ex-server power supplies (e.g. HSTNS-PD18 or similar) are good for about 60A, and can be modded from 12v to 13.5v. Cheap online.
Thanks for info.
Looking to buy one of these shortly.. and do the MARS mod too.
It's a good set .
Make sure you check the mike gain. The factory default may be too low. Try 65.
Thanks will do .

Yes get screen cover quick , lol
Thank you for this video it helps a lot.
Glad it was helpful!

Yes
I like the fact that the buttons are backlite
Lovely set .
My FT991A has a flashing red Tx lighting the upper rift window. Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.
When you are out of band the radio wont let you TX.

991 is better
1:50 Duplexer....or coax switch.
Thanks
Excellent walkthrough Thank you. Sub'd
Welcome aboard!
Good video, however it might be simplistic to others, what cables do i need to get started? I've only used ht. Thanks
Hi just a normal USB C cable

I wonder does this do 11 meters ? I was thinking of purchasing this radio
Yes it does you may need to do a.Modificatoon to transmit .

Not as helpful as it could be. You don't really explain what you are doing and why, you have no plan, you're just going through the buttons.
No try actually listening to what i am saying also learn what each button does .Takes effort .
