I heard this one before. The nerve of her to say that. Also the nerve of the marriage counselor to say op "drove" her to cheat. He should go after her license.

@@saravananrs6563 yup they have a ratio to maintain, not a duty to make people's life better

Marriage counsellor is a cheat. That type of gaslighting is typical of those that do whatever they want and blame everyone else for their choices.

A Marriage Counselor is NOT a therapist (though many do hold such credentials). But it is not a clinically accepted therapeutic endeavor, it is a mediation. Mediations, by definition, require some concession on both sides. Their primary job is to de-escalate.
This leads to some interesting dynamics. Usually, they will appear to side with whomever they deem to be the least rational, to reign them in. As long as you maintain your composure, respond rationally to questions, you'll be fine. But it will feel exactly the opposite of that. As counter-intuitive as it seems, if you feel attacked in that scenario, you're "winning", lol.
Conversely, if they are validating you with some carefully chosen phrasing and then start finishing the thought for you with some generic phrase like "..and to expand on that", you are losing. They think you're fucking cuckoo for coco puffs.
They want to put the irrational person at ease, and get the more rational person to express some emotion their spouse might empathize with. It's very much the opposite of what it seems, unless one party is just blatantly bat-shit crazy, or becomes belligerent.
And it may be unfair to characterize it as "winning" or "losing", their duty is to the marriage, not either party, it isn't supposed to be adversarial. But if one party is merely humoring the other, the preservation of the marriage is out the window anyway, it is inherently adversarial at that point (as it was here).
It sounds like the counselor was actually on OP's side, but his short, dry, emotionless responses weren't conducive to any resolution (as per his lawyer's intent).
I work in legal discovery. These session records, while confidential, do often get used in litigation, meaning I see the unredacted copies of everything. The stereotype of them always taking a side is only true in the verbal discussions, they do that intentionally to steer the conversation, but that sure as hell isn't what they write down in their notes, lol. It's so universal, they must be trained to do this. They speak favorably of the less credible party in session, then write the exact opposite in their findings. But their clients don't see the other side of that, so it does make them look biased from that perspective.

Also, the fact that he was forced to go to marriage counseling because of that cake is _bullshit._

They are the greedy ones. Mom specified what each child got and the other two want what OP got as part of her inheritance too!
