It's funny that you basically need new spark plugs every time you change the oil in these things. And they don't particularly like the poorly gapped copper electrode ones. They want platinum or iridium to run best and they still just eat them. Rotary engines are just inherently cool, but they're also inherently flawed, so they're never something I can recommend to people without reservations, and that's sad. Apparently Mazda is still tinkering with them and they've made statements in the past that the Rotary will be coming back and the RX series will resume in the future, but we will have to see what they do with it. At least we know that they can be made to run reasonably well on ethanol, now they just need to improve the wear on seals and spark plugs and improve the efficiency.
I've been a Mazda loyalist ever since my little Protege, and although I'd like to see something like a Mazdaspeed3/6 (called MPS too) I am stoked to watch this series.
A 17 year old 83 GSL-SE RX7 was my first car back in 2000 when i turned 16. Paid $900 for it and I loved that car. Being 16, I drove hard and beat the hell out of it and it never stranded me. 185k miles when I sold it to a friend and it still ran great. He flipped it and it was totaled shortly after. I used to see RX7s around quite regularly. Now I might go years without seeing one. I've owned several, and all three generations. But that first gen is the one I miss the most. Will definitely own one again and fully restore it down the road.
I’m so excited for this!! I had a green series one for my first car back when I was 18, I’m also currently building a series two very slowly on my channel with a group c kit and have an RX8… mate had a series two in this colour with the same front spoiler back in the day.. bringing back too many awesome memories for me as a 43 year old.. couldn’t be happier right now to see this.
Hi MCM. I'm so excited for this. I just bought myself a 1987 rx7 fc turbo 2. I'm going to follow your build along intently! My rx7 needs a good bit of maintenance but it's damn sexy. Cheers!
So excited for this FB build. So stocked to see this series I just found it on accident youtube hasn't shown me mighty car mods videos in a long time. I love my 83 and these cars are so fun to drive.
As a long time owner of FBs, I'm glad to see my favorite youtubers enjoy one. I'm excited to see what all you do to it and I really hope you make some rotary oriented merch
Wow, superb - I'm really looking forward to seeing more. Being privileged to own TWO of these iconic cars (a Series 2 and Series 3), plus a 6 speed RX-8. I'll be watching with great interest. BTW, the RX-8 is a great package. It may not have the power of the FD, but the chassis and handling is sublime. My RX-8 has done nearly 100K miles, including 85 trackdays (about 8,500 track miles) in the UK and Europe, with only one engine rebuild at 82k. The cornering speed of the RX-8 often surprises many more powerful cars.
I've had an FC for about 10 years now. Love the rotary its unlike any piston engine for sure. The thing I like the best about them, is no matter where it is in the rev range it keep pulling. Even vs my speed 6 with more than twice as much power. The engine falls off as you approach the top of the revs. The rotary doesn't, it keep pulling in every gear. Its fantastic, super linear, feels really good.
Brings back great memories, I had my TX Gemini but drooled over owning a RX7, my brother inlaw had a RX5 and it was a beast with the 13B and 5 speed, nice car Marty and yes I'm jealous

@@edwardmolloy7548 lack of imports has nothing to do with it, we are talking about 20+ year old cars. Our government has just slapped more tax on all petrol imports anyway
I had a '79 RX-7 5-speed back in the day. It drove like a go cart, sounded just like that. Watch the distributor cap, I used to get some apparent carb issues (even diagnosed) that disappeared with a new cap. It was shooting flames out the exhaust, welcome to the fun world of rotary. It's so light it's terrible driving it in any sort of bad weather, but it's so light that one time I got stuck on a snow drift and was able to lift the front and move it off (it wasn't very high and I didn't move it too far). It said 2x35 cc for engine size.
bad idea. in order to turbo that engine you need to find turbo rotors from the 1983 turbo version only sold in japan for 1 year. and at that point you might as well just 13b swap it. NA rotary's dont like more than 5-6 psi due to being "high comp" and rotary's really dont like detonation of any kind.
@@zomgz932 With how far tuning has come, this is no longer the case. Detonation is a killer of rotaries, yes. But unless you're a complete ape with tuning, you'll have to TRY blowing one up with boost. FYI the "high compression" rotors - the highest there is, is OEM 9.7:1 on the GSL-SE model with the fuel injected 13b-RESI engine. The RX-8's rotors were barely higher at 10:1 but the seal design was not very good as the seals sat shallower in the rotors. Especially if the engine build was done to the right clearances
Had 4 rotarys in the family back in the day, very warm RX3, race prepared RX4, stock series 1 RX7 and also stock series 2 RX7. the main thing that kills them is overheating. The RX4 died because 1 plug lead fell off and it overheated and blew the seals. Love the RX7's, particularly the early ones, I think the series 2 is the best starting point of all of them.
Rotaries - The loudest car I have ever heard - RX7 at Watkins Glen running a straight pipe. Best RX story, I remember reading about a guy club racing an RX3, he had a buzzer that made noise if he exceeded the redline, he used the noise as an indication of when to shift, if the noise stopped, it was time to downshift.
My dad still has his, it was last on the road in 1990, it has around 20K miles on the clock, all original, excellent condition. Been lightly restored/looked after ever since. His is silver, but does have a more plain front bumper/splitter, but does have the big rubber spoiler which i quite like, you should find one. Same wheels which look stunning, iconic pop up headlights etc. the tail/rear lights are the dark smoked type which looks sweet too. These are supposed to be a 2+2 so the rear seats are like buckets to keep your knees up and only like 12” deep, so tiny seats with no belts in the rear either (obv for this period). These just sound gorgeous, even at stock, they love to revv up, i sadly have only heard it run from time to time and never driven or seen my dads on the road.
I once briefly owned a 90s rx7 turbo. It was amazing for a month(bought used of course). The gearbox and suspension were well sorted. The turbo worked well, but the engine was knackered. It died in the middle of the highest bridge in my area....scary waiting for a tow at 400 feet above the river. I lived how it drove, just the previous owner didn't service it
I just recently got myself a series 4 1988 FC Rx7 for only 12500. Almost 100% stock and in good condition. Always wanted a Rx7. Excited to see more of the FB!
An RX is the same as Skyline to me, just that little bit out of reach, I had the opportunity to buy one around 8 years ago for £4K but needed a little bit too much work, now they’re around £8.5K for a rolling shell and £18K for a dog 🤦♂️😓🤣
I had an 1986 Rx-7. First car I ever raved to 9000 rpm. Was not quick, but I never found a cop free road long enough to find out how fast it really was. It was so smooth. Love the 13B, except for a the leaky fuel injector making hot restarts fun some times.
It’s about time you guys finally got a rotary, maybe you can get Rob Dahm to come over and do a crossover episode 🤣🤣🤣. Good luck on the mods, looks like a really clean car!
First time I saw an RX-7 it was Jaspion's Car on TV. So modern, back in the day, but I never saw one in person. it's one of my childhood dreamcars, but, here in Brazil, we don't have those cars on our streets. Congrats.
I also just checked the pricing for RX-8’s, and it seems like the series 2 have really jumped in price [especially the ones that have low km’s]. I’m glad I had my fun when I owned one, it truely was a fun car to drive, and wow was it a headache to own and maintain. As Moog had stated, it’s a serious relationship that you have to fully commit to.
@@Shepard_AU i got a series 1 a few months ago and it is already worth double what i paid (i didnt pay much tho). I didnt buy it as an investment tho as the cost if ownership will outweigh any growth short term. i got it because i grin from ear to ear every time i drive it. Even filling up at the servo adding 2 stroke oil is an occasion. Some things dont make sense, but they are worth doing because it's fun!
@@yeahnah6468totally agree but i feel the the rx7 wont stay stock for long. 13b bridgy for sure in the coming eps with full suspension tweaks. Also see it as a chance for moog to make more NA purity jokes or "injected is better" driving the 13b msp.
I learnt to drive a manual gearbox in my old mans 85 series 3 FB. Learning about 8.5k redline was excellent fun. Looking forward to watching this project unfold. Yes Moog, things were great in 78!
I love this car I'm from the U.S.A. and owned one of these beautiful machines in my younger days! So fun to drive, more power than people ever expected and always looks sporty !
I've loved MCM since day one and am really excited to see Marty getting an RX7. One thing maybe my first and only complaint is about what your saying about my favorite car the RX8. Yes it does have backseats. The car has suicide doors and trust me it doesn't turn it into a "station wagon" with press on plastic fake wood trim. What you said about the folks who complain about them being unreliable are often people that just don't understand it takes a different type of care is straight on. My 2004 has 135,000 Miles and it still does 0-60 MPH in 5 seconds and change. I had it clocked twice admittadly by guys with stopwatch apps but the 2004 had a bit more get up and go (And worse emissions) Thanks for talking about the handling. Its the finest car I've driven and takes turns like nothing I've ever driven. PLEASE do two things - Premix some 2 cycle oil in everytank of petrol and use nothing less then 91 octaine. When you stop your RX7 rev to 2-3k hold for 3 or 4 seconds and with your foot still on the pedal switch off the key. I've never had my car flood and thats why. Last... I know that having driven what hundreds of cars the sound of a car reving past 5K = fear of blowing up your engine. The Rotory is designed for high revs and you should be getting far closer to 9K before shifting. If you want to sink back in your seat and see what a Rotory car is supposed to do that is how to drive it. *Note it BEEPS when you have to shift (Just before redline) I've been told that if you don't rev it up your gunking up things but I will never know. Take great care to see that your oil level is correct and DO change the oil and filter because this engine is different. Its power to weight ratio makes it illegal to run in some races and you don't need to supercharge or turbo charge to have a pretty amazing car. AND ITS GOT SUICIDE DOORS!!! *Ok, that just seemed so cool to me but check one RX8 out PLEASE even if you just borrow one in good running order to see if it doesn't blow your minds. I'm sorry if this comes off as a rant - its not. I love you guys. *In a non ickly way. Keep doing your show you inspired me to buy my RX8 half taken apart (And missing stuff) and making it nice enough that when the dealership did a recall on the airbags the Manager asked to meet me to say how nice it was to work on my favorite car of all time.
I had one as my first car in 1997. It was the same year and colour. I bought it with a blown engine and had a rebuild and mild port at Maztech. It rolled backwards down my girlfriends driveway into a wall bending the axel and quarter panel. Fun little car
YES!!!! Loved that car growing up! Sadly with our winters here near Toronto are HARD on our cars. So I don't see them too often on the roads. Caught my eye and this should be a cool series
I grew up with these cars! A big portion of my competition license was in one, and I went to school for my competition license in the very same FB RX7 that my dad earned his license in! Sweet little cars, can't wait to see what you guys do with it. We still have a great little GSL-SE. I'm positive you will figure this out yourself, but if you go to lower, be careful of that rear end. It really needs a 3 link, but short of that, you gotta massage that watts arm that's there. Lowering it without addressing the inherent geometry issues, it gets real snap oversteery. not fun to drive.
Yes!! The episode I've been waiting on forever! I drove one of these many years ago, one of the best drives ever. Similar colour too. Fingers crossed I'll have one in the future.
I love the fact that the inventor of the Rotary engine is named Wankel. Fits well with the International Federation of Automotive Purity. ;) Plus, it's fun to say. I remember wanting one of these back in the day. A friend and I went to the '81 auto show just to sit inside the Series 2 RX-7. We eventually talked them into letting us test-drive a new one. The engine just felt "unburstable". It just went and went.
I love seeing y'all get into the older stuff. It's a blast to work on cars that are that simple. I do hate hearing y'all ragging on carburetors so much, though. Well set up, a carb will always be more responsive EFI. They can really be fantastic to drive, you just have to give them what they want. Never as efficient, but a ton of fun.
Think with that on odometer, it should be on it's 4th or 5th engine rebuild, and the rotor tips last about 60k kms. Love the sound of these. My friend had a 13B engined Mk 2 RX7, and it sounded amazing!
I own a Corvette C6 Grand Sport, I'm saving a space in my garage for a 1985 RX 7 GSL-SE I love those cars good memories when I was in highschool. Love them maybe more than my Corvette.
Extremely clean, that front bumper is amazing! Guys you have to turbo this thing but I've heard that if you change the intake you will blow the seal so good luck and I love that Marty has a real-wheel drive that's not a truck.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen people on TikTok telling Australians their 180SX is a 240SX or an S13, and telling people with an S13 in the USA it's a 180SX, etc. Most of the time the commenter is obviously wrong and just talks out their ass, hahaha.
Oh sweet beautiful brap cannot wait for this series!!!!!
One of my dream cars is a Mazda RX-3. I'd wide body it like the old race cars and 3 rotor it.
Finally a rotary! Congrats Marty, this is exciting! 🥳
I’ve been waiting for this for 10 years, can’t wait to see this build progress. Love the work guys!
That color looks so beautiful 😻
Ready spare plugs in your car, you'll need it.
And bottles of 2 stroke oil
This was only an issue if you super flooded the engine in my experience. Never had that issue once with my 85 RX7.
Cheers!
Congrats on the car buddy! That's freaking sweet
That's my favorite Gen. Love to see a video if you make any.
Nice.. I might have a rust free GSL-SE. price just went up!

Also you gotta hit the buzzer Marty!
love seeing them working on older cars!
I am genuinely glad for Marty for this purchase, I'm so happy they can make their dreams come true, even after a decade.
So excited for this FB build. So stocked to see this series I just found it on accident youtube hasn't shown me mighty car mods videos in a long time. I love my 83 and these cars are so fun to drive.
As a long time owner of FBs, I'm glad to see my favorite youtubers enjoy one. I'm excited to see what all you do to it and I really hope you make some rotary oriented merch
i have been patiently waiting for this day since season 1, and what a great example to start with! Rotorheads unite!
I had a 1984 RX-7 purchased new in the USA for over 20 years. Loved every minute of it. Thanks for this.

That color is gorgeous. My 90 integra 4 door is a similar color, but with a tad more green in it.
Next month on Mighty Car Mods: Marty changes the apex seals on his Mazda.
Except he's got a 12a which will run to 200k miles on factory apex seals.
Hopefully gets it ported, 12a's run forever
Brings back great memories, I had my TX Gemini but drooled over owning a RX7, my brother inlaw had a RX5 and it was a beast with the 13B and 5 speed, nice car Marty and yes I'm jealous
My Fb stands broken in its garage for months now. Broke down on a Italy-trip. Since then I couldn't find motivation to repair it. So happy to see you guys with a FB. kinda motivates me to repair mine :))
DUDE YESSSS!!!! Welcome to the rotary life ❤️ I love a clean SA chassis. We need more RX-7s on TH-cam
Very clean looking RX7.
Plenty of them here in NZ👌🏻
And they used to be worth 3-8k, now they're 15-40k. New Zealand inflation is out of control
@@Jake_Hamlin Agreed, everything in NZ is bloody expensive. Even the na mx5 has gone up a crap ton in the last couple years
@@Jake_Hamlin just watched a short news video on TH-cam & they're saying that the lack of imports due to Covid car prices are increasing by a huge amount.
That $2000 nugget could be worth nearly double.
"Its about 80% there!" So the turbo is the other 20% Marty?
bad idea. in order to turbo that engine you need to find turbo rotors from the 1983 turbo version only sold in japan for 1 year. and at that point you might as well just 13b swap it.
Much rather run a peripheral port than a turbo (on a carbed rotary), with some side-draught dellortos or webbers 👌🏼
For an FB... Good god, please no.
I really hope you don't do the "unexpected" LS swap. Though a modern 2 rotor swap keeping it NA and rev to the moon would be super fun
They dont LS swap in Aussie land.... THEY BARA SWAP!!! LETS GOOOO!!!!
Absolutely love this, thank you for once again sharing original and engaging content into our eye holes!
Haha so cool, been a long time since I've heard the secondaries crack open.takes me back to 1996
Rotaries - The loudest car I have ever heard - RX7 at Watkins Glen running a straight pipe.
Best RX story, I remember reading about a guy club racing an RX3, he had a buzzer that made noise if he exceeded the redline, he used the noise as an indication of when to shift, if the noise stopped, it was time to downshift.
This lockdown I think I’ve watched every MCM video and the second channel. Thankyou so much for your epic content legends 🤙
FINALLY!!! I have been waiting for this forever.
Right? When we saw it in the garage during the Keith Urban episode, I was like "any day now..."
Such a clean base to start from, so envious would love one :D
I had a red one as my first car in high school it never started when it was cold outside it was the worse car I ever had
@@maximusX_ Simpler times bro!
would love to see some Rob Dahm style endings for this build series...hilarious
Hahaha I would be honored if they did 😂
I once briefly owned a 90s rx7 turbo. It was amazing for a month(bought used of course). The gearbox and suspension were well sorted. The turbo worked well, but the engine was knackered. It died in the middle of the highest bridge in my area....scary waiting for a tow at 400 feet above the river. I lived how it drove, just the previous owner didn't service it
Time to disrespect a Dorito!!! Well done guys! Looking forward to seeing what you blokes get up to on this one...
not have given to the child. 😶🙂😎😃

FINALLY! I have been waiting for this for so long! Long live the 🔥 breathing doritos!! 😁
Yep, they double in price quicker than you can double your income to afford them too 😂
Me seeing the title: "Oh no. . . Has MCM gone electric? Did they buy a bicycle? Or have they finally bought a BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP?"
I thought the exact same 😂😂
I had an 1986 Rx-7. First car I ever raved to 9000 rpm. Was not quick, but I never found a cop free road long enough to find out how fast it really was. It was so smooth. Love the 13B, except for a the leaky fuel injector making hot restarts fun some times.
Contact rob 😂 he will love to work on the engine
Just contact PAC performance they are better then Rob
Or redefined autoworks
kiwis and aussies do rotaries a bit better than the fellas in the states
It’s about time you guys finally got a rotary, maybe you can get Rob Dahm to come over and do a crossover episode 🤣🤣🤣. Good luck on the mods, looks like a really clean car!
First time I saw an RX-7 it was Jaspion's Car on TV. So modern, back in the day, but I never saw one in person.
it's one of my childhood dreamcars, but, here in Brazil, we don't have those cars on our streets.
Congrats.
In this episode of MCM, goats in helicopters, and dorito looking things ...
Helicopers have wings that are r......
Moog, buy an rx8 and challenge marty in his rx7. Rx8s are dirt cheap and will probably be broken so you get to do a rebuild episode.
stock vs stock that would be totally unfair. The rx8 makes basically double the power and handles better than any series of rx7.
"I'm gonna choose my words carefully (..) blah blah blah" -Moog.
If it was 12 months ago, you could have bought mine for 1/2 the price! So excited to see what you guys do with it!
YES!!!! Loved that car growing up! Sadly with our winters here near Toronto are HARD on our cars. So I don't see them too often on the roads. Caught my eye and this should be a cool series
I'd be hesitant to touch the exterior of that car...it looks beautiful as is.
I loved and love 1st and 2nd gen RX7's. I have a couple vids of my '85 GSL-SE on my channel, but that was at least a decade ago..
So excited for this! I bought my first RX-7, a 1980, just a few months ago and I love it!
Drove one new back in ‘82. Such an impressive car. Can’t remember the last time I saw one
Awesome, spinny triangles are great for revs and huge flames on lift off. Makes me miss my fc3s.
I vote for a 20b conversion, you know you want to.
I own a Corvette C6 Grand Sport, I'm saving a space in my garage for a 1985 RX 7 GSL-SE I love those cars good memories when I was in highschool. Love them maybe more than my Corvette.
Back in 87' my Grandad owned 2 Rx7's, He showed my some photos just the other day. Such cool cars
FINALLY! FINALLY! FINALLY! As a rotary guy I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG to see one on this channel! Can't wait!
Extremely clean, that front bumper is amazing! Guys you have to turbo this thing but I've heard that if you change the intake you will blow the seal so good luck and I love that Marty has a real-wheel drive that's not a truck.
*upgrade the turbo, there's many versions where I'm from. Marty should drift! Marty should drift!! Marty should drift!!
I had an RX7 just like this in the early 90s, the same engine, colour and wheels. Excited to see the out come. Nice one lads 👍
I had one of them back in 1983 it was such a cool car and I loved travelling around Australia in it.
