Hello, I am commenting here about your mill build! The reason your steel shaft goes through the bearings so hard is , it appears, you have the shaft locking rings improperly installed. (maybe)
Many bearing like you are using have a shaft locking ring with an allen set screw in the separate locking ring. The bearing AND the ring have an eccentric machined into them. Once the shaft is installed the locking ring is attached to the bearing, and with a center punch, the locking ring is jammed in the clockwise direction so that it is not possible for the shaft to move in the bearing. The Allen screw just keeps the locking ring from moving on the bearing, which keeps the shaft from moving in and out
I'm sure that's as clear as mud!
