@Fernando Soares Not at all,, is it "the contrary it has gain by getting rid of someone who constantly attack and defaming the CCP ." The criticizing is never "attacking" or defaming when it is the truth. When the party chooses corruption ,lies and murder. Their day a re surely numbered.
@@vanmytrinh6198 funny...why is everyone else trying to get into the US and out of China...sounds like you're the dumbass who doesn't know what's truly going on...And by the way, you sound like you hate Trump as the other uniformed sheeple do...he has done more to help US citizens that the last ten Presidents combined, so until you can live it, don't complain about it.
I'm surprised yet so glad you left China. I was actually worried that you might one day "disappear" because of the "negative" content about the regime. Best of luck with the new chapter in your life in the U.S!
Hi Serpentza, I am a French man living in Shenzhen for about 10 years now. I truly understand your decision. I am my self married and have a beautiful 2 years old daughter and I am also thinking to move out for her education, despite de fact that as a industrial designer Shenzhen is a great place to work. I wish you all the best in your future projects.
If China keeping eyes on foreigners socmed account as bad as they said, is it safe for you to leave a comment in a video like this? That presumably tied to your personal identity? Especially since we know what kind of CCP trolls is lurking around this channel.
Everything you said in this video rings true with me. I lived and worked in Shanghai for 5 years during your early years in Shenzhen. I met my wife there as well (mainland Chinese, but not Shanghainese). I was moved with my job to Hong Kong 13 years ago, but regularly visit Shenzhen (day trips, so I don’t have to register with the police, which I also hate) and trips back to my wife’s family. I could never live in China again (and my wife even more so) and, with the new Security Law in Hong Kong, we are now counting down our time in Hong Kong. I love the vibrancy here too. I first came to Hong Kong in 1988 and was immediately smitten by the place, back when Shenzhen was the factory expansion outlet for Hong Kong toy companies and other low-end products. Honestly, I dread having to leave in many ways, but I value personal freedom too much to risk being here when Hong Kong becomes too much like the mainland. The gap is closing fast now.
I had lived in China for 30 years. I know this country and race deeply. I left there and immigrated to the United States 2 years ago. Now, welcome you and wish you every success here.
How are you liking the U.S. if you don't mind me asking? I live in the U.S and I chose to visit China when I was 18, was a very fun visit at least but I love living in the U.S.
Welcome to America. We're not perfect and we have our own issues, but the US is still one of the last nations where a person has individual liberty and a constitution that puts limitations on government for the benefit of the citizen. Unfortunately, the radical leftists want to turn the US more like being communist China.
@@RicArmstrong Why are you spreading misinformation and propaganda, Donald Trump and the right wing extremists are a bigger threat to this country than his communist buddies back east. Not to worry though because come November patriotic Americans will put an end to his despotic rule.
As a former Chinese citizen, what he said in the videos is really true and that's what I feel as a former Chinese citizen, who had been living there for 25 years.
100% agree. I lived in China for several years and ended up going back to my home country for the exact same reasons. I miss my Chinese friends and all I'd built there, but it is what it is.
I left China 14 years ago. We have got a baby and decided to move to Germany. It was a nice experience but living in Germany is much better. After we arrived we heard about many babies in China died from poisonous milk powder. So we where shocked and happy for not being concerned of the risks.
Can’t imagine the fear, after watching his friends story or china seeking him out and Winston being jailed since 2018, I really hope he and their families got out if they wanted to. Seen so many videos of the one guy. The titles were like Wife love America dated six years ago, I’m moving back to China wife divorcing me, a few other things like dating foreign girls, five things I hate about my Chinese wife.:: I didn’t click any of these yet but I’m curious how it turned out for these two families for the kids. I’m not aware of any child agreement with kids who were born with a foreign parent.
Well good decision from a food standards standpoint if nothing else. Western Europe if I'm not mistaken has the strictest food safety regulations in the world. And the food that is served in kindergardens, schools etc. is generally healthy.
True dat. I think that comes from having been unfairly and unjustly treated, and in his case, his entire life growing up and his family living under great distress in South Africa 🇿🇦.
@@I9s7lam5is-S3tu1pid his story is very one sided and fishy. The whole thing of him saying he left South Africa because of no job opportunities is weird and statistics say otherwise. But whatever makes him feel good I guess
I don't know why he frequently visited Hong Kong when government found out riots in HK are related to foreign organization. it's explainable at that time for the police tracking his route. ps. all his videos are targeting China, I doubt it when he say he love China.
@@serenityyang750 No he doesn't have all videos targeting China. I didn't watched this channel for a long time (few years), and from watching his videos, I really was curious and wanted to visit it. And since I'm socialist I wanted to see, something more about country that call itself communist. Winston seems to keep it real. As any intelligent person could describe good and bad in any country. I'm not fan of US driven, and visible propaganda against China, in the last few years. China is threat to capitalist dominance of US, that's reality. US like they like to do, they attacks in a way of labelling that China bad because it's communist. China is a fascist state. Communism means freedom. The end goal of communist society is borderless state, with decentralised power, means of production controlled by workers not some fucking party elites. Nationalism, any hate against any group (maybe except the rich) is forbidden (nationality/race/gender/orientation/religion). And by the way fuck the US too. China and US are both bad with their ideology of supremacy. Some strategics of control and influence on the global scale, sometimes are very different and sometimes nearly the same. If you want present better your regime, do better job, because this comment was so weak is just sad.
@@arhael1 ok, comment was weak. @@serenityyang750 I know China isn't communist/socialist. Again is more of a fascist state. Most people don't understand that word, and many in the West keep saying it's overused. That's because most people when they hear fascist have image of Hitler, and death camps, and holocaust. But that's just extreme example. Modern day Republicans in US are fascists, and I would argue those before too. Any government that's allows or praise nationalism, discriminate against foreigners, have or aim to have total control of it's citizens, deny any wrongdoing is fascistic. I don't know much about Winston travelling to HK, but him living for over a decade in China, having wife and family, should give him absolute right to going back mainland China. Same with being able to work. So those are not even any reasonable arguments for me. And yeah he can even collaborate with US intelligence currently, seeing all tittles lately. But he doesn't seem to make stuff up, I don't see hate from him. I can see anti China propaganda everyday, and they don't try to make any sense, since most people don't know anything about this country, just say hey they're bad because communism, and there's no freedom and the holocaust. Winston doesn't fit the profile at all. China just like US are countries with the biggest potential for being example of good progress for humanity, yet both choose to play imperial dominance game. That's sad, and everybody on the planet will pay price for this. All of this is too big and complicated topic, so I will finish here. Have a good day.

Perhaps you should live your heritage through a few more TH-camrs or even go there to see yourself. This guy is obviously biased because of his personal experience. I am a Chinese Canadian myself. CCP is no more evil than any other government administration, and if they did something wrong, it was not simply because they were CCP, it was because they were Chinese... Their culture is quite sophisticated, not so black and white as we see through our western lenses

I noticed your videos were criticizing China and the CCP more and more, and I was wondering how the CCP hasn't cracked down on the two of you. Glad you and C-Milk made it out in time along with your families. Your videos have really helped me understand the country that my parents are from. Thanks and enjoy the US. Take care and stay safe.
Well said Richard. I have been following these videos for years as well as reading about China and it's more recent history. I call myself a China watcher, something I always wanted to become. Quite a revelation, and I am still wondering WTF....
@Soulwalker Young Your taking what I said a bit too literally. I don't mean that I ''completely'' understand a country by watching Serpentza's videos. Rather, they give me some insight to Chinese culture from a ''westerners'' or ''foreigners' point of view. Keep in mind, he's lived in China for about 14 and a half years. That's quite a bit of time for someone living in a foreign country and he has hundreds of videos talking about the culture, customs, foods, places, etc. Personally, I've learned more about China through his videos as compared to my parents who grew up in mainland China. Through his videos, I was able to understand a bit more clearly about the cultural differences between China and the West, and why my parents are the way they are. On a side note, I don't think anybody can fully ''understand'' a country, even if they lived there for their entire lives.
You guys were incredibly lucky to have gotten out of there at the right moment, I'm amazed you never got "vanished"... You REAalllllly pushed your luck.

No comparison at all between the culture of Japan and what is left of China. TCM practitioners need to go to Japan for higher level training because the art is lost in China along with most of it’s “culture”. The Chinese culture now can be described as “Best Price”.
I'm an American, through and through. I have been to Japan seven times during my life (first trip was military, in 1973), and I feel deep inside that if I had my life to live over again, I'd really focus on learning Japanese and spending more time there. Last trip was with my wife in October 2019, and we loved it. I made sure to take my Chinese-Filipina wife to Hiroshima (where I'd had such a wonderful time on that first trip), and we both loved the city and the welcoming, friendly attitude of all whom we dealt with. The memorials to the atomic bomb were still heart-rending. (As a Navy veteran, I twice had the pleasure and honor of serving on joint military exercises with the Japanese navy and also visited the memorial battleship Mikasa. Great force and wonderful sailors!) The culture and history of your nation is in a class all its own and must always be defended. As soon as the Wuhan virus restrictions are lifted, we're going to make another trip to Japan. Japan is awesome!

The apartment I was living in at the time must have had 3 feet of water on the first floor for a week. Though I was never sure if the flooding was simply a result of awful infrastructure or just the rain? idk. Great Wall wake up . Riots do happen in the U. S. and in China . Americans can know and see these things because we have press freedom and citizen activists not afraid to seek out and speak truth and protect one another . Hong Kong people want to keep their own democracy . Mainland Chinese don't know there are riots in China happening all the time because the CCP controls all the news and the police . Chinese people want peace so they don't question anything . They accept displacement and loss of rights and property if not they demonstrate. In America we question everything . We have that right we have citizen demonstrations big and small wherever and whenever. Unlike in China, American police do not routinely beat and drag off demonstrators , beat old women, destroy shops, yank people off their e-bikes, and club people randomly. Some American police have been brutal but there are consequences unlike Chinese brutality because the CCP protects and defends inorder to maintain control. Who profits ? That should be your concern . That said, does your homeland even mention the concept of "free speech" in it's founding documents at all, or do you risk jail (or worse) if you criticize your country or government? Oh, and what country did you live in? Let's compare and contrast my homeland that you call "evil personified", shall we?
A fascinating story. I have been following your channel for quite some time. I think you could probably apply to China what Winston Churchill in 1939 said about Russia, "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma,"
Winston, you have a compelling story to tell. So happy you are here in America now. We pray for your continued success and safety here. Winston please try your level best to get Mom, Dad and Sis over here. Julius Malema and his ilk are insane. The crazy out of control political and social deterioration in S. Africa is truly worrisome. I have friends who confirm the downward spiral there. Stay safe guys.
Donald Trump is a bit of an asshole, but he is working to bring back America’s freedoms that were under threat, much to the dismay of the media and the progressive democrats. Because of this they have attempted to display him as a tyrant to both their own citizens and the international ones.

I found your channel last night, your contents are so good ,I stayed up very late watching your videos, you literally speak my mind! I totally agree with you! your perspectives are so mutual and objective ,and they are based on real experiences, I relate everything you say. I'm a Chinese and I have been living here for my whole life, I don't know if I can say I think I'm very lucky because I think independently, their "education" and propaganda never had me brainwashed. And I get more and more awake with time and life experiences here. What you said in your videos I have to come to realize myself, too. this is no place to raise children, even if they make it to adulthood safe and sound, they would turn into robots eventually, cuz there is no other way. I don't want my future children to live in a place like this . This is no place for women, either!! I don't want to say too much here in case I get myself in trouble. anyways, in recent years I have made up my mind that I will get the hell out of here, now things are rolling, now under this covid control situation it is 1000 times harder if we want to leave. I hope everything will go swell and I will make it. Sometimes I feel so embarrassed and ashamed of where I'm from, as well as my ppl and the gov because I know we are just like an outcast to the world, what's even worse is our ppl are hostile to each other which is very rare to see in other ethnicity groups in the whole world, sometimes I just feel so frustrated and confused. lastly I want to say thank you very much for keeping up the good work on your channel, it takes a lot of effort, courage and dedication to reveal the truth, I really appreciate it. And I'm sorry for all the awful and degrading things you have been through here, it breaks my heart a little when I know ppl like you who was in love with this land were treated like that. Thank you for being here once, I wish you have the best life ever in the future!!

I feel the same way. I first went to China in 2007. Fell in love with the culture (the historical real Chinese culture) I met my wife in Shenzhen. We were planning to retire in China. But she says no to that idea now. Scary how the CCP is today. How they handled the virus is an example of what you said in this video.
I agree. My wife is currently stuck in HK because of the covid travel ban. And she sees daily what the ccp is doing to her home. She wants out but also wants to stay and help. The ccp is simply evil. Not the Chinese people, or the culture, the ccp.
China had its good times from 2007-2013. Once Xi took over it has been going downhill. Also how they handled coronavirus by covering up is no different than how they handled 2003 SARS. None of the lessons were learned. Only that Covid is much more damaging than SARS.
You are 100% right, China can not handle the virus as well as what the US are still doing. This is the reason why the US become the biggest home of the virus in the world but it even can not keep growing for a little bit longer time in China. So, take care of the virus baby better.
I felt the same way and had the same first time experience. I had a month long volunteer job in Beijing and I decided to move there and got a University job in Yantai, Shandong Province. I was only there two months, and experienced all this nonsense and almost immediately felt scared for my life. I moved to Hong Kong for a bit, but eventually moved back to the U.S.
you better watch out, because the U.S. is headed down the same path, its doubtful, with the way things are going, that the U.S. is going to be a democracy in 5-10 years' time, don't be naive to believe that the U.S. is the safe haven that it once was....
Nice one! Winston…We have been watching both you and C-Milk for some time…what wonderful and informative content you guys produce, really interesting stuff. So, thanks for all your efforts…And we wish both of you and your families a safe, happy and prosperous future….Keep up the excellent work. 👍👍👍
I left Beijing over a year ago. Lived there for 8 years. Let me add this experience to Winston's video to give you guys an even broader picture. 1) In the entirety of my time in China, the police visited my home a grand total of zero times... until Meng Wanzhou was arrested. Then they visited my home to check my documents FIVE times... in one month. They checked my passport, visa, residency permit, and housing contract each time looking for a problem. Did I mention that I'm Canadian? Must be a coincidence. 2) This is the big one. China implemented a new law which enabled the government, at will, to investigate any foreign bank accounts over 5000 RMB (that's less than 1000 USD). They would freeze your assets and ask you for tax documents. If you were unable to provide it then they'd seize your entire bank account. Some people might read this and think "Well, I guess that's fair right? Nations have a right to tax those living in them." Fair enough, and I agree. Here's the problem: You need to go to each and every single one of your previous companies to get those tax documents. Anyone who has worked in China immediately understands the problem. Chinese companies are often unprofessional, vindictive, and corrupt. This means that when you go to your previous company to ask for tax documents, you could be met with: "Well, you quit, so why should we help you?" or "You don't work here anymore so we don't have to give you anything." Not only that, but some Chinese companies claim to be paying taxes on your salary, but are actually just deducting those taxes and pocketing them. Try explaining that to the Chinese government. They don't care. It's the foreigner's fault ALWAYS. Then there's my favorite: Gross incompetence. Some Chinese companies simply have no idea what they're doing, no idea how to get tax forms, no idea how to do tax forms, pretty much no idea about anything. They've just blundered along their entire existence. China is hell. I left China for greener pastures. My new job pays me 70% less than China and I work literally twice as much and I'm 10x happier. Just wrap your mind around that. EDIT: I wanted to add something to this because I always get angry Chinese nationalists saying exactly the same thing to me when they read things like this: "Well, if you hate it so much, then why don't you leave?!" Let me tell you why. Because in my first year in China I adopted two kittens. I wanted to leave one year after that but China had a policy of one passport, one pet. So I wasn't allowed to leave with both cats. There was no way in hell that I'd leave one of my pets behind. Fast forward to a few years later, I got married. We were going to finish our contracts then leave, but we got drunk and accidentally rescued a dog from an abusive pet store. Now we needed three passports. Finally China changed the rule to 1 passport 2 pets. EDIT 2: My wife isn't Chinese.
Oh wow 😧 I was planning on either moving to Shanghai or Beijing because it's more affordable and I'm a film major and thought I could work for films. This video and your story completely changed my mind. Guess I'll keep looking. I still want to live in Asia because it's cheaper but still have to look elsewhere now.
@@jazzysk8rgirl Nah you should still go. It will be an interesting life experience and a chance for you to make it into the film industry. Worse comes to worst you can come back to the US and make a film about the experience.
True. One just have to witness how Chinese people behave when they see a black guy or a tall white guy. Its like they are completely ignorant that there are people living outside of their country as well.
I'd actually say it depends on WHERE in China you're in. 99% of city youth glance, but don't care much as it takes time away from being buried in their smart phones. Older generation for sure stare. Then there are the out of town Chinese, young and old who will not only stare, but the younger ones will take photos of foreigners and talk like they're visiting a zoo!
Mind telling more about your experiences ? Good and bad :). Honestly, I hate people who talk trash on China just because they are being the media's sheep (pardon the term) but this video didn't make me want to move to China &Japan as they seem harsh with foreigners apparently (I can't guarantee thought) but why not travel as a tourist! :)
@@itech40 What you described here is wrong. On the contrary, Chinese people as well as government naturally favor foreigners other than Chinese citizens. Further, what favor do you expect from China? and if you think equal treatment to any nationals is a loss in your opinion, thats up to you. If you want to live in a world where truth doesn't matter, that's your privilege. I don't. Holy crap you’re friends with one of the Michaels? As a Canadian I am so mad at the CCP for taking Covrig and Spavor in retaliation for Meng Wanzhou. I’ve heard reports from the Michaels’ families here in Canada but nothing from their friends in China. My in-laws live in Hong Kong and I’m hoping they get out soon. Thankfully they’re Canadian citizens so they have that option for the time being.
Tell them to get out of HK ASAP. Article 38 of the National Security law grants the CCP the legal power to arrest foreigners and send them to the mainland
Hopefully you can help drive policy in your local province / region to stop taking "favors" from CCP under the table, and take care of Canada. It's what we're doing in the USA. =)

I get very emotional watching this video and I keep getting back to it. It reminds me of my first years in China and all the fun I had there. Unfortunately, as time went by I realized I had to leave, especially after my son was born, it’s just not the right place to raise a child. I couldn’t see him suffering there, mainly because of pollution and food poisoning. I have great memories though. Thanks for the video Winston.
All you worried are pollution and food poisoning ????!!!! The CCP's oppressing, spying on people, brainwashing them, making many of them become sleep walking people, don't even realize they don't have freedom at all, are much worse than pollution and food poisoning. A lot of the people suck too. I've met plenty of Chinese who think their way of life/culture is better and more important than integrating because that's what the CCP has taught them. They say I should be grateful for them being in my country. Grateful for public indecency and rudeness? Some of them are educated, denounce the CCP and respect western values, but they seem few and far between. If you don't believe me, just look at all the controversies around the world e.g. Chinese students attacking Hong Kong protestors in many countries. They're brainwashed.
@@David09420 Their way of life/culture may very well be better for them and more important to them. Everyone has the right to not have their culture ripped apart and sold in 16 ounce bottles by our "western values"
"Government kept changing the goal posts...." this is the perfect narrative for China, in fact, this also applies to Thailand, Indonesia, etc where countries do not allow and discourage foreign ownership of anything in their country yet greed for foreign investment wealth.
Same reason Japan's economy has gone down the toilet. All take and no give makes for no friends, no loyalties, no influence, no power, no favours to call in. It just takes a while, is all.

Plenty of spine in Canada. First of all, taking hostages is not going to influence the outcome of a judicial hearing which was the purpose of taking them in the first place. People tend to have a simple understanding of the situation. China is not just doing this to Canada, this is a worldwide phenomenon where China is trying to use its new economic power through investment & bribery to gain influence all over. If taking on western countries, it's through threatening its citizenry or appealing to greed by threatening trade. Both those have been applied to Canada specifically over the past decade but it's also done to many other western countries this way. Divide and conquer. Canada respects rule of law and subscribes to quaint ideas like basic human rights. China does not. Canada does not want to take Chinese citizens hostage or trump up charges against innocents for political leverage. China has no problem escalating further by threatening Canadian citizens in China if things go that way. The path forward is not a tit-for-tat retaliation where one side has no scruples. It has to be an international effort that keeps China honest and hopes for change in China in the future. China will be the number one power in the world and we can only hope that it can somehow find its way to becoming a responsible and respected one. Unfortunately the one western country in the world in a traditional position to organize such a thing has had a weak president and weak government for four years. A man who undercut the legal case in Canada for extradition by saying he was willing to make a deal with China for the Huawei executive if progress was made on trade. The message was very clear from him: everything is up for negotiation for the right price and China heard that loud and clear. It was an indication that perhaps the extradition request by the US was made as part of pressure applied in trade negotiations. In those four years, the United States has cut its diplomatic corp, withdrawn from international institutions and weakened alliances, preferring to go it alone. This has reduced American influence and confidence in American leadership, which a rising country like China is eager to fill.
I watch Sooo much News on TV like an old person. its sad so many ppl dont watch news but understanding the situation thru friends discussion trying to figurout the meaning of what happened, or reading stuff thru internet. USA use the Chinese ppl a bargan when Donald trump was opposing Sanctions towards Chinese Trade War, It was his bargaining Chip. HE was finding way to have China reacting badly, ....so he would have excuse to either use army or tell his own ppl "see i told ya". Canada stuck in the middle because if they have to please usa becaues they have treaty as Ailies , at same time Canada does NOT want to be used as Bitch to do the dirty work which Already happened. Because Donald trump is Asshole that if Canada does NOT do what is told, USA would also apply Sanctions towards Canada which he did randomly with Steel, MILK, Aluminum (right before election)....just for the effin sake of it n later reversed . Canada does NOT want to have the spine to die for someone's evil intention by someone who's ONLY using Canada as his bitch. So IT was smart of Justin Trudou doing the best he could. Actually Justin wanted to free the Chinese person, but if he did, it would encourage all the terrorist all over the world to snatch up Canadian Citizen or American Cityzen n swab with their spies n terrorists. Unfortunately most ppl don frigin watch ACTUAL TV n read stuff or over hear stuff n get trigered, they dont even have he actual picture. its just saddinging how we young ppl in Canada dont even see that n acting rationally which fed into Donald Trump's Win Win plan.

I’m American, been to Japan twice. I haven’t been to China, but I doubt that I’d like it better than Japan. Japan is my favorite country.

This is the second video of yours that I want and let me tell you that it requires a lot of balls to do what you've done. It is very inspiring for me. I live in Japan and some of the issues you mentioned you can find them here as well. This is my last year in Japan.
When I first time came to China, I really loved this place. I was in Beijing Foreign Language University, everything was good, restaurant, people, streets everything. I usually go to our Indian embassy for scholarship money. After two or three visits, the intelligence people came and started asking so many questions, I wonder I was a student but still they don't have any common sense. I was shocked and and get disappointed. Then I got a Harvard scholarship and I went to Beijing Normal University, this time in 2019 , I realized that most of the good restaurant, markets (中关村)(五道口all the good restaurant are closed and people are more rude as compare to earlier time. China nowdays is more depressed, unfriendly and becoming more unhappy place, and this Xi jing ping regime will put the last nail in the coffin, golden days of China is over! Thanks for sharing your nice videos and in depth knowledge about China, and all the best for your future, fortune favors the bold!

I am not against your comment, but actually I think is correct to talk from others perspectives,五道口 was really close to my university, due to pandemic it was recently closed, but before it was full of life and foreigners.
China's golden years will come back around again if CCP and Winnie the Pooh can get their foot out of their own - . . . err..... way.

Oh, and the baby is adorable too.☺💗👶🍼
The 2 Canadians that were "caught" recently could have been you guys. Good that you where able to leave.
There have been other more terrifying incidents, like drugs being planted in gifts of businessmen so they are captured and executed, giving their Chinese partners sole ownership of the company.
Recently there was a witch-hunt about foreigners touching little kids, after 1 was caught doing it, when the abuse of children in kindergartens by Chinese men and women has been a well documented fact for years. But one European dude gets caught and suddenly all foreigners who work with kids are suspects. It's that old communist idea that everyone is guilty of something, they just need to keep searching and poking you to confess to it.
The 2 Canadians thing is politically motivated so of high value. Serpentza and Laowhy are just a pain in the asses (for the CCP) LOL. Just kidding about the PIA thing.
Given that there are more hearings coming up for Meng, we can expect to see more arrests of westerners once they start to run out of convenient Canadians. You've made the right decision at the right time.

So, take care of the virus baby better.
historical real china in 2007???
I felt the same way and had the same first time experience. I had a month long volunteer job in Beijing and I decided to move there and got a University job in Yantai, Shandong Province. I was only there two months, and experienced all this nonsense and almost immediately felt scared for my life. I moved to Hong Kong for a bit, but eventually moved back to the U.S.

Here's the problem:
You need to go to each and every single one of your previous companies to get those tax documents. Anyone who has worked in China immediately understands the problem. Chinese companies are often unprofessional, vindictive, and corrupt. This means that when you go to your previous company to ask for tax documents, you could be met with: "Well, you quit, so why should we help you?" or "You don't work here anymore so we don't have to give you anything."
Not only that, but some Chinese companies claim to be paying taxes on your salary, but are actually just deducting those taxes and pocketing them.
EDIT: I wanted to add something to this because I always get angry Chinese nationalists saying exactly the same thing to me when they read things like this: "Well, if you hate it so much, then why don't you leave?!"
Let me tell you why.

Same reason Japan's economy has gone down the toilet. All take and no give makes for no friends, no loyalties, no influence, no power, no favours to call in. It just takes a while, is all.
Sebastian T. Dangerfield, wow, I didn’t know this. I knew they’re struggling with an aging population and a lack of interest in sex and marriage among the young, but I didn’t realize their economy is struggling. They still lead in consumer electronics, I believe. NHK developed the 8K standard, for instance.
@@viktorreznov4718 struggling is a bit misleading, just some heavy stagnation. I think the national GDP has gone up about 3 percent since the 1980's i believe. Still pretty bad, but the country isn't about to crumble any time soon.
@@steven.2602 Yes, stagnation is a big concern with countries that do not share trade evenly. Eventually, the bell tolls.
Note: it doesn't help that they had ownership of land and is supported by the government to kick people out who don't agree with their agenda.
Our entire country here in Canada pray for your Friend Michael but our government has no balls to stand up to China.
Haha...your govt have balls ???
@malibu di the people have a spine thats for sure.. at least where i'm from. Come here and fuck around, we don't stand for shit.
Didn't Justin Trudeau let the Chinese army come to Canada for cold weather training? What a great idea...
Thank you for your honesty. ... GOD Bless!!!
The Hong Kong crackdown was a sign. Good you can read the "Tea Leaves' and you finally acted upon that information because all of us who have followed your path have had concern for your well being...............for a couple years now. Glad to know you are out. Your body of work in China will educate and help millions of Chinese for years to come because of your time in China and because of your willingness to risk your freedom to get that information out. Thank you for what you "Unveiled" in China and best wishes on the next step of your journey in America.
I honestly dont like HK people. When they protest..the world feels bad and does many things towards *Free HK* But when other countries protest..HK people could care less and don't like to support protests in countries outside of their own. I dunno why The UK is allowing them in, UK has a huge homeless problem and can't even afford to provide housing and jobs for its own citizens...let alone allow thousands/millions of people from another country to come with a UK passport. T.T
He's a foreign criminal.
@@muajin Hong Kong knows what it means to be free. Every rational US or Canadian citizen supports Hong Kong in their struggle.
@@muajin Becoz many civilized countries already recognize the threat and danger imposed by CCP, and they have to show support to those anti-CCP "friends". Moreover, UK does have moral responsibility to HKers, not to say many of them are literally British National (BNO holders).
@@muajin > When they protest..the world feels bad and does many things towards Free HK But when other countries protest..HK people could care less and don't like to support protests in countries outside of their own.
this sentence makes no sense. by 'the world' are you referring to the government of other countries or the citizens? are you expecting hk citizens to have the same level of influence as the us legislative council?
> can't even afford to provide housing and jobs for its own citizens
you don't 'afford' to provide housing and jobs, you stimulate the economy by bringing talented people to create businesses and jobs, hk has a huge pool of highly educated professionals, they are not gonna bring people who didn't even graduate high school into the country just to collect free health care
"The nail that sticks out, gets hammered."
That's a common saying in Japan.
Chinese version would be "the bird that stick out get shot"
@@arnoldussineamico498 and eaten...
Or another one of China's version
"A nail that sticks out got grinded"
China's would be, "The thing that's alive, gets eaten"
I've been watching you a long time. I figured it would just be a matter of time that something like this would happen. To look on the bright side, now you have a new places to explore. Stay awesome!
Imagine one day his grandkids will ask him about his life and youth 😆😆
This video aged so well!
Dear Winston, I‘m watching your Channel since several years and followed your journey in life. I got hooked to your content because it is sharing a view on a country/culture that is hard to comprehend from the outside. I‘m fascinated by what Shenzhen represents and thank you a lot of sharing your experiences there. I admire your bravery that it took to speak about also the negative things in China while living there. I wish you and your family all the best for the next big chapter in life. And please ... stay awesome!
I wish they would make a Conquering USA or Conquering South Africa.
Same here!😊
Glad you were able to leave to freedom!
Leaving this country is definitely is a right decision.
This is amazing man. I can't believe i was such a ''shill'' for China 4 years ago. Now i'm grown up and i'm an adult and i'm just so happy to hear your story. You are a great man and so is laowhy. Much love from Sweden!
I’m glad that you finally see what all Communist regimes eventually lead to.
@@Sniperboy5551 They don't necessarily go this way, but they will if you have corrupt, power-hungry leaders.
Do you mean you were paid or were you just a believer?
Wow man, I've been lurking and watching your videos for a long time. Your Chanel popped up when I was researching ghost towns I think maybe 6 years ago? ( Your Chinese ghost city ride came up, I was BLOWN AWAY!) Since then I have learned so much about China, their culture, and for that matter the situation in South Africa as well. Thank you for risking and sharing so much. Your videos are super interesting and professionally done. They have really been informative and enjoyable. I am sorry you had to leave China but perhaps this chapter of your life will be even better. I wish you and your family all the best! Anyway I hope you find what you are looking for here in America, Welcome and stay Awesome!
