  • This reaction caught us off guard because it was our first time listening to Tool, but what a great band. We spent most of the reaction trying to figure out the story of "The Pot." Do you know who he's talking to and if TOOL does a lot of music like this? I have so many questions.

Kangaroo done hung the jury is referencing a kangaroo court where the verdict is pre-determined. You nailed it with your thoughts about the song being about hypocrites. It's a reference to the drug culture in the US. Judges and lawyers sending people to prison for drugs when we all know that they are some of the worst people for taking drugs

    • @iceman10129

Thats not what a kangaroo court is. A kangaroo court is just trying someone not in an official courtroom. So if you and your peers go ahead and judge someone in your own way without giving the person an actual court trial.

You all analyzed this song beautifully. Well done. I'll add that "Weeping shades of cozen indigo" refers to the pot being called out or punished for their hypocrisy and crying fake tears (cozen means deceitful and indigo is blue). "Got lemon juice up in your eye" because the pot had to squirt lemon juice in their eye to make themselves cry. They feel no real remorse for their hypocrisy.
The kangaroo (liar), the lawyer, and the pot (mirror), were all just as guilty (stoned) as the kettle they were judging the whole time, but they were getting away with it by working together to hide their wrongdoings. They had a system to rob the grave (dig up the past) and burn the evidence in order to snow the cradle (fool the future); but they've done it so many times now that they're deep up to their eyes in dirt, so deep that they could practically raise the dead. Their weaknesses are starting to show and the one being harshly and unfairly judged (the kettle that got pissed on) sees this, so the kettle decides to fight back, calling them all out on their bullshit and exposing the fact that they're all just as guilty, if not more, and were rigging their own trials while sentencing innocent people to harsh punishment (hanging the juror with the innocent). The kettle is telling us that the whole group is fraudulent; they operate within a rigged system (their soapbox house of cards and glass) that's set up to protect them while they judge and punish (throw their stones at) everyone else for the same thing they're guilty of.

First thing you need to know about Tool is that the fans can be overzealous at times…like almost all the time. The next thing is that their music is fun and interesting. Should you wish to, and most fans will say you should, you can dive deep into their lyrics and musicianship and find new and crazy things. The lyrics have multiple meanings in some cases (not unlike other artists) and what the instruments often do in the song are amazing. The biggest thing you need to know about Tool is that you need to be ready for it. I’m a fan and have been since they came out with their first album and it was the talk of the school that somebody that graduated from here became a big celebrity. However, even I had to listen to their songs a few times before I could say I liked them.

an unofficial court held by a group of people in order to try someone regarded, especially without good evidence, as guilty of a crime or misdemeanor.
