"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion" has got to be one of the best lines of lyrics ever written! 💯 Awesome reaction Aileen! 🤘🌀
My guilty pleasure is watching people listen to and react to Tool songs. You are by far my favorite. I can tell by your facial expressions that you are loving what you hear. Love your interpretations of each song! Keep them coming please!
Can't stand these canned facial reactions of 90% of the re-actors. Her analysis isn't bad, but I'd just as well prefer that these re-actors bag their heads than see that same stank face I see everywhere, ever again.....and she's not hard to look at.
TOOL changed my life, in a way even saved it. I discovered them late, almost two years ago, and there hasn't gone one day that I haven't listened to them.
Yeah me too. Had always known of them, but only started paying attention last year. It's been a very rough year and these guys have got me through it. They're the only band where certain songs genuinely make me get teary eyed
I’m feeling the same exact thing right now, it’s terrible knowing that I’ve heard of this band for so long but never checked them out till now. their lyrics resonate heavy through their discography.
I think my favorite part of schism is that it uses some complex musical ideas (the alternating 5/8 and 7/8, the 6/4 bridge, the end) to describe such a human experience.
One thing I love about them is the polyrhythms and strange time signatures feel so natural, and organic. Not like cold mathematics, more like a fractal emerging
Tool is the rare band that is even better live in concert. They are insanely good musicians. It's not just a show but an experience that you take part in. No other band is like Tool live. I've seen them live twice now in the last 20 years. They are truly hypnotic live. They put you in a trance without needing any substances. Just the music itself in a stadium does the trick. If you have never experienced Tool play live then you are truly missing out. This song won a Grammy too by the way.
When the lyrics can have so much ambiguity that they can mean or help all listeners in life is truly incredible. Tool and Maynard are all amazing musicians.
Such a powerful line, "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion". I always liked Tool's sound, but sadly, I didn't pay attention to the lyrics until much later in life. That's a shame, because lines, like this one, are a much-needed reminder of how close we can all get to self-destruction, harming others, or just allowing harm to come to others. A little reminder, every now and then, could save us all a lot of unnecessary pain, suffered and/or inflicted, and maybe push us to reach out a little more often than we might, otherwise. I don't think that there have been many times in history that we've needed communication more than today. This song now feels like it could've been a warning of what would, and has come for society in the years that followed. But, too many of us (like myself) were way too busy listening to the noise and the fury, and not listening to what was being said.
Now this is how you write a breakup song. “I know the pieces fit, cause I watched them fall away” Also, such a fun song to play on bass. Justin Chancellor has always been one of my faves.
TOOL and RATM were the two main reasons I picked up a bass way back in 2001. Biggest inspirations for me to play. Still absolutely love both bands but Justin is just my all time favourite easily.
I was just flipping through your videos and it seems like you’ve overlooked Descending from TOOL !!! IMHO the finest music TOOL has ever released … Give it go !!!
love how you look really into this one (when I had my own eyes open lol ), as a bass player this is very high on my favourite list, Tool is good to just chill, listen to the music and just enjoy what your imagination comes up with
Tool literally makes you look deeper and find your true self and then they are music next. It's almost like a forced meditation that you can't fight but realize you don't want to fight and allow yourself to see your true self. Then they are amazing music too. Idk how they do it but they do it everytime no matter how many times I've heard a song, they get me to open myself to myself and I learn something new everytime. The real Mrs Cleo lmao
This song got me into tool. I had never heard anything like this before, this song just blew my mind! I didn't even know that was possible to make music like this, like a puzzle! Nice video, Aileen!
The “I know the pieces fit” section- perfect. It sounds like he’s frustrated, thinking to himself at first, with the lower volume. Then the frustration builds as the volume increases, and maybe comes out in an argument. A great, well made song about communication. Yeah, we’re all lovers, ideally, like you said at the end.

Hello Ms. Aileen. Hope your having an awesome day. Thankyou for some Tool. If you ever get a chance look up how they formed the band . It's a really cool story and really brings a bigger appreciation to there band. 😎🤘🔥
This is the first Tool song I learned how to play on the bass and will always hold a special place in my heart. Just a powerful song. Great reaction. :)
Great great great song. Encouraging people to make sure they know who they are and the things they can do even after a traumatic event in life. Among all this hate, delirium and filth that you feel life is throwing at you please never forget that your humanity will survive.
Love the reaction Aileen! So happy you came back to do some more Tool! 😊🤘🌀 The song might also relate to the band itself, working out differences between themselves and breaking free of the record label during that time when Lateralus was released. Things are broken at the beginning of the song then the build-up, and they all come together, the pieces fit! Much love!
@@AileenSenpai Adam Jones talks about Lateralus in Revolver magazine and how the band works together, their differences is what makes them stronger and helps make better music, so you hit it on the head with “beauty in the dissonance”!

First of all. Great shirt. I have it as well. This album is one of 3 PERFECT albums by Tool. Any song you react to from Fear Innoculum will not disappoint.
Lol same. She has literally always told me to turn tool off because I blast them. She went with me to the show in Dallas recently and the next day she was blasting Tool when I woke up. “Wow that drummer is really good.” Justin Chancellor her her favorite though. Especially when I explained that most of the guitar riffs are pretty much coming from him while Adam Jones is making weird squeezing noises lol
"The light, the fuel, the fire that has burned the hole between us so" is my favorite part. What drew two people together can come to drive them apart. A light that shines too bright can blind. A fire that burns too hot will burn through its fuel and end up guttering and dying before it's time.
i'd heard a couple of tool's singles before schism and enjoyed them, but when i heard this one i was in awe and it inspired me to go out and buy their albums. absolutely beautiful piece of music with an important message.
I was just starting to practice this song for my band, so extra awesome you are reacting for it now. Greetings from the Netherlands! Always love your reactions.

Heard this in 2001 and it never stuck. Now I'm 41 and it hits home in so many deep and meaningful ways. Definitely appreciate music and the artists much more now.
A dream come true watching them at Download 19 after 13 years that they had been off the grid. Laid my back on the barricade while I was drowning in the best sound I had experienced. Overwhelming. It was surreal.
Really looking forward to your reaction tomorrow. You are one of the best reactors on TH-cam hands down. Love the channel and content alot. Keep up the great work Aileen. 🤘😊💙

Probably one of the most well known Tool songs and my favorite. That part starting at 5:50 always grabs my attention, makes me focus and manages to give me peace.

When you get a chance go back and watch it it's pretty cool thanks for all the tool reactions I know you'll get to it eventually eon blue/the patient. Thanks again have a wonderful day
I remember buying Lateralus, which this is on, on cd when it came out. Lots has been said about the songs, but also, the multi-layered artwork on the original release. There were multi-transparent pages overlapping, like you might see in a medical journal, where you turn a page and the skin is gone, turn the next, the muscles and tissue are gone, etc. until it's down to the skeleton. It was like that, but disguised in the brain tissue at the final layer was the word "God". Then the case was inside a transparent/black case that had the band name/album title and more. The packaging was art in itself that hits you before you even hear a note. It was later re-released with a simpler traditional single-layer version, like you see in this video, along with the band name/album title. You can see someone unbox the better version in this video. th-cam.com/video/Gxa5IlYeXQY/w-d-xo.html
Ahh yeah. I have that CD boxed away in the garage and totally forgot about that layered cover until you mentioned it. Very cool part of the experience.
I remember where I was when I first opened it and pressed play... then that intro into The Grudge came in. Went on a long drive so I could listen to the full album without interruption.
8th grade....i asked my mom for one of her CD's. You can probably guess what band that was. It ignited a fire in me with this band. Tool will always be my all time favorite!
That quiet bridge with the repeating, fairly simple riff and the other guitar doing those interesting sounds was a trip when I experienced the song for the first time in Guitar Hero. It's not that long a section but at the time, playing it was so weird not just because I wasn't good at Guitar Hero but because my ears and hands were confused about which part I was actually playing. The guitars in this song weave in and out and around each other so well...like two lovers creating poetry out of dissonance. Wow, I just came up with that while writing the comment. Not bad 😎
Apropos effortlessly cool: There is a video of a concert out there where Maynard tackles a fan that runs to the stage and sits on him while he doesn´t miss a beat - singing the whole time.
the unresolved melody plays in with the unresolved lyrics... really beautiful combination.... one of the amazing things about tool is the marriage of audio and visual.... also, l agree with your take...we are all flesh puppets trying to navigate this space together
What a spot on interpretation of the lyrics! You're a very sensitive and wise person. It also goes a long way to justify my stubborn position that Tool rock. Some folks dis it as early math-rock.
TOOL- the best most consistent band of the last 30 years. Notice how they haven’t fallen off or broken up due to drugs etc etc. everyone in this band knows their clearly defined role and are virtuosos at their given craft.
The amount of trust this band has in each other to give their all on each track is astounding. They wrote all the music and record it , then hand it off to Maynard. He has to trust that they will not hand him BS. They trust him with their hard work to create meaningful lyrics and execute. And Maynard's ego, constantly mixing himself into the background taking the place of an instrument nearly.... It shows a lot of mental maturity to do what is best for the song and not just himself.
"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion" has got to be one of the best lines of lyrics ever written! 💯 Awesome reaction Aileen! 🤘🌀
Greatest lyricist ever. With all due respect to Neil Peart and Robert Plant, Maynard is in a league all to himself when it comes to songwriting.
Notice the "cold silence" (rests) between words in this phrase.

The original packaging was and is so unreal.
Ahh yeah. I have that CD boxed away in the garage and totally forgot about that layered cover until you mentioned it. Very cool part of the experience.
I remember where I was when I first opened it and pressed play... then that intro into The Grudge came in. Went on a long drive so I could listen to the full album without interruption.
If ever there was a brilliant song written about a break up lol
this is it 😂
Always great to see someone else learn that the pieces fit.
8th grade....i asked my mom for one of her CD's. You can probably guess what band that was. It ignited a fire in me with this band. Tool will always be my all time favorite!
I have pretty wide tastes, but Tool was likely a big contribution to my love for complex and overlapping time signatures.
Your eyes bring out the beauty of this song
One of the great lyrics, “Cold silence has, A tendency to, Atrophy any, Sense of compassion”
the unresolved melody plays in with the unresolved lyrics... really beautiful combination.... one of the amazing things about tool is the marriage of audio and visual.... also, l agree with your take...we are all flesh puppets trying to navigate this space together
My favorite song of all time of any band. Means so much more now in my life than it ever did before. Lateralus is amazing but this is the best for me.
Aileen and Tool in the afternoon nothing better always have to mention your beautiful brown eyes 👀
I always always always return to this song to remind myself of the importance of communication in all my relationships 🙏
What a spot on interpretation of the lyrics! You're a very sensitive and wise person. It also goes a long way to justify my stubborn position that Tool rock. Some folks dis it as early math-rock.
Tool in general is a damn masterpiece! 🙌
One of the best songs on the planet. Thank you for another awesome reaction
