    Carp is great. My grandfather use to cook it. super tasty. As soon as he got one, still alive, he'd commandeer the bathtub and swim it in fresh water for 24hrs before butchering it, in order to help remove the muddy water taste. big flakes of flesh, made fantastic fish cakes and soup.

    • @GodfatherBoxSet
      @GodfatherBoxSet ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That is one of the smartest yet craziest ways I've heard of someone getting the muddy taste from carp

    • @danutagajewski3330
      @danutagajewski3330 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You must have some Polish in your family! Obligatory bathtub (or in our case, rain barrel) swim before the carp was prepped for Christmas Eve dinner! I still remember the year we had a frost (in England), and the rain barrel had a thick layer of ice on top...took my Grandad and Dad 30 minutes to break through the ice!

    I had to laugh a little bit at seeing the boys go to Sonny's BBQ. It's a fairly large chain and while the food isn't outstanding, it's not bad either. It's consistent, and along with Cracker Barrell, I do look for it because it's a safe place to eat when I'm on a road trip. But definitely wouldn't class it as a "local" place.

    • @CthRyleh
      @CthRyleh ปีที่แล้ว +17

      If anything it would be local to Florida as the first location was in Gainesville, which he only sold in 2011.

    • @groundcontrol7
      @groundcontrol7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Clarissa Gafoor this actually got me wondering if there is any difference between the two, and though all tartans are plaids, not all plaids are tartans. Plaid is the pattern but tartan refers specifically to the use of a pattern to associate with a family, name, or history. I'm sure you knew this already, but it's very interesting!

    • @groundcontrol7
      @groundcontrol7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Clarissa Gafoor also a fun fact, a lot of Americans tend to call those kinds of shirts "flannels" because that's the fabric they tend to made of. I didn't use that word because I know it means something different elsewhere 😁

    I hope with this experience that you understand the term "southern cooking" means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. The food in Kentucky is going to be wildly different from the food in South Carolina but both are considered southern cooking. Anyway, I look forward to your continued exploration of great food in America. Don't close the book on BBQ until you taste Memphis sweet though. There's just SO MUCH more for you to experience. Maybe set a longterm soft goal of sampling the food from all 50 states? Enjoy it!

    @Sorted Food - do you know what kind of carp you ate? (Bighead, Silver, Black, Common?) If you get a chance to come out to Missouri or Illinois you should try to find a place that will take you carp jumping! Silver carp (and to a lesser extent, bighead carp) will jump (HIGH) out of the water at the sound of a boat motor. You can shoot them out of the air with a bow and arrow or catch them out of the air in large landing nets. It's SUPER fun and they are delicious!

    I love that you tried Burgoo! My family is from north western Kentucky and we make Burgoo at harvest every year... to see it served at Jim Beam is so cool, most people where we live now have absolutely no idea wtf it is. :D

    America gave the world great things. This includes cars, great actors, blues, country, jazz, rock and roll, and amazing food. I do want to go back to America for a longer visit, in the future. Also in Kentucky, there is a city called Edmonton. It's also a North London suburb, in England, and the capital city of Alberta, Canada. Thanks for sharing this. I'm really enjoying this series. Cheers! ✌️

      Cars were invented in Germany, unless u meant specific cars. Seems to be a misconception people have. Still many great things invented in the US

    I said this on the last one, and I'll say it again, y'all need to do a BBQ tour of the US. Sonny's is good, but it's definitely a chain in every sense.

    I don’t know if you are still doing these road-trip type of videos, or if you’ve got so many suggestions that you’ll never be able to get to all of them, but I’d like to recommend a visit to Vancouver Island in Canada. Afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria is a must, and I’d also recommend the Shady Rest in Qualicum Beach, a pub/restaurant that has been operating on the waterfront there for 100 years.

    I just find this hilarailous, given how many people I've met who argue whether Kentucky is "actually" southern. Hope ya'll make it to tennessee sometime. Great food and great alcohol, whiskey and moonshine are our specialties. and food's especially great if you stop at some hometown places, like river marinas and barbecue and such. From fancier restaurants in touristy places like Gatlinburg to out-of-the-way places that have to survive on food quaility. and if you want beautiful natural surroundings, hard to beat the Smokey Mountains.

    My grandma use to say if you dont like a certain food its because tou haven't had it when its cooked just right. When its cooked, & seasoned perfectly, you'll love it! Its mostly true. Though I still hate celery. 😂
