In regards to the jjambalaya, Houston is so close to the border of Louisiana there are lots of Cajuns & Creoles in the town. My Cajun family moved over in the 80's for work. So I always grew up with Cajun food, knew some of the little gems in town, but it became more mainstream in Houston in the last 10 years. It really boomed after Katrina when so many New Orleans natives moved to Houston and we got more Creole & Cajun places and influence in town.
I am a fresh corn masa guy all day long. But those flour tortillas made with the smoked brisket fat sounds amazing. And the eggs in those tacos were Gordon Ramsey perfect.
I live directly across from the Pit Room. Virtually every moment of the day when I'm outside, I'm overwhelmed by the delicious smell of smoked meats. I'm also fairly sure they're raising property values lol
Houston BBQ is unique compared to the other Texas cities. Mainly in that we love having BBQ with a rich sauce, soft warm tortillas and delicious Brussel sprouts with our meats. It’s always interesting to see how each city is unique in their own ways. Great commentary and awesome series! 🍖 👏 😋
As a Houstonian, I disagree about the sauce. We do have a wide range of BBQ styles but I'd say most people still like theirs sauceless. How else can you judge the meat?
@@albertozepeda1939 That’s interesting, I’ve always seen most people ask for the sauce. I know it’s common manners to eat the BBQ meat without the sauce first, but most people I’ve seen will eat with the sauce.
Brussel Sprouts are back not just because they changed how they cook them. But also because they have been massively improved by breeders. They are far less bitter and sulphury than they used to be. They literally taste nicer than when we were kids.
Y'all went to some great spots. If you're ever back in Houston towards the end of February, you should go to the BBQ Championship at the Houston Rodeo. It is a three day long event with hundreds of BBQ teams, live music, and lots of different parties.
As a Feges regular that goes with his co worker every other friday for a while now. Well deserved to be on this show. Everything on the menu is amazing. From burgers to ribs you name it. The service there is amazing as well. If your thinking bout feges make this your reason to hit the road and go!
Finally Pinkertons gets its rightful place…I’ve tried all multiple times within my 6 years of living in Houston and Pinkertons came out on top every time.
As someone from northern Alabama, Alabama white sauce is normally on bbq roasted chicken! So its strong mayo/vinegar/pepper flavor plays well with the more neutral smokey, juicy, crispy chicken
I love these videos so much with Joe and Harry! Can you ease my concerns that the crew get to finish all the food as the amount of times Joe has to remind Harry to put the fork down makes me worry it's going to waste 😆
I love their chile relleno sausage! Also on a good day, their brisket is fantastic. Love their chocolates as well, especially the Dark Matter bar chocolate.
I am always fascinated by the fact that Joe finds it so inconceivable that an entire other country (the UK) may not have foods that the US has i.e. Tater Tots. 🤣
I think I was surprised when I found out that tots aren't a thing in the UK, too, because it's not a place I would expect to decline another variation of fried potato, but I feel like he hams it up for the camera.
Houston is SUCH a large city, I can say I've never been able to make it to any of the BBQ joints the boys sampled today. I've had Killen's BBQ, and Pappas BBQ, but definitely none of those places.
Can confirm tater tots are not that common in the UK. Some indie fast food places do them to go with burgers etc as an alternative to 🇬🇧chips (🇺🇸fries). In mass catering, like schools or hospitals, you will find potato croquettes, but that's mashed potato and breaded, rather than the shredded potato of the tot. Or potato smiley faces or alphabet letters in schools for little kids, which is just a croquette in a different shape. The closest British potato product to a tater tot is our hash browns, which are shredded potato pressed in a shape (usually triangular), they come in a bag from the freezer section and they cook up pretty crispy on the outside. But that's pretty much just a breakfast food.
shaped Hash browns are from New York they're all over the US as well due to that and a tater tot is the exact same thing as a shaped hashed brown literally just shaped differently lmao so you're not missing out on too much when it comes to tater tots.
Oh man potato smiley faces brought back a memory for me, and I'm American. They were only available at bad restaurants, or restaurants that primarily didn't serve American food but had some on the side for kids.
I absolutely loved these three videos. I really wish we had a Texas in the UK even for this alone. I wish there was the time to visit to have this fantastic barbecue. We’ve got Hickory’s here. They’re very good but about the only barbecue USA style. Got a feeling I wouldn’t be able to leave Texas.
Glad to see Harry and Joe give Feges a try. The barbecue is great, but the sides are out of this world good. They didn't mention that the cornbread is made with hog fat. They also didn't have any pulled pork, which Feges cooks whole hog daily. It least they did. They also missed out on the french fries at Feges. They're fried in tallow and amazing. My favorite fries in the city. I love that duck jamabalaya at Pinkerton's. I can't say it's my favorite place in town. Kudos for going to The Pit Room. Glad they got to try the breakfast tacos. My favorite thing there is the chicken taco. I'm as surprised about that as anyone. I seem to remember they had really stellar okra as well. Definitely love Truth, especially the brisket and the tater tot casserole. Great episode! There are my other great places in greater Houston, but you did my town right!
In houston, just south of downtown on the edge, there is a hole in the wall BBQ place, in a residential neighborhood. She was given a shout out on food network yrs ago. But it is the best BBQ i have had in Houston. Hole in the wall places have the best BBQ. The Meatshack in Dallas is also great.
Birria is Mexican, and y'all do a terrible interpretation of basically any Mexican dish by adding weird shit like sour cream, cumin, cilantro and cheddar cheese to every single "Mexican" dish
I am surprised out of all the barbeque places only one used mesquite. I love post oak/mesquite for beef, hickory/applewood for pork, and pecan for chicken/turkey.
Houstonian here. Pinkerton's is the best BBQ in Houston. You can't go wrong with any place though - but no other place has the same quality sides and meat. Pinkerton's has the best potato salad on earth. They also have jalepeno cheese rice (I think it's trademarked?) nobody else can serve it. This video was pretty damn accurate in terms of highlighting the best of each place. We are splitting hairs here, our worst is better than a lot of city's best. Texas Chocolate + BBQ is one of my other favorites up in Tomball
Off to Houston next year, this is incredibly useful and is making me hungry!! FYI, I had the best tater tots, in London at Burger and Beyond, SE1, outstandingly tasty!!
Houston is the best food city in the country. The only spot that gives it a run for its money is Las Vegas, however Houston has a more diverse range of cuisines. The diversity in the city along with the quality of beef in Texas, makes for a magical cuisine experience. Some of my favorite places are: Annie's Cafe and bar, Hugo's, and El Tiempo.
You can definitely get cheese and jalapeno sausages in the UK in the supermarkets, especially in their finest range. We'd normally get Italian sausages which would have parmesan and chilli and fennel in them
After seeing them do Texas BBQ, it’ll be interesting to see them tackle KBBQ, but as a completely different experience because it’s a DIY sort of a thing, assuming they’d be down for that 🤔
Wow! He must be a crazy diehard football/soccer fan! …Because, Texas Barbecue would 100% cancel ALL OF MY PLANS if it’s ever presented in front of me anytime! Without a doubt! 🤣😂🤣😂👍
Been to The Pit Room and Pinkerton's, I still prefer Roegel's over them. Also, while Stockyard BBQ has average tasting meats...their Bake Potato Casserole is amazing.
Really loved the tour of Texas & their BBQ. I live in Salem, Oregon, & we have a quality BBQ steakhouse called 'Adam's Ribs'. So far very good. They've won awards themselves.
When you go to 10 different bbq places. It’s probably better to just have it once or twice. Fly in and out. Any of the top places they go to I’m sure is great.
These two are officially an iconic duo.

Well fries are so common in the UK, it’s not much of a stretch that an American could be surprised by the lack of tater tots lol
Typical American defaultism
Possibly because a tater tot is essentially a formed mini hash brown, which is a major part of an English breakfast.
