How to retape an old wiring harness with TESA loom tape

  • This week, I spent some time on the Datsun and fixed the hacked wiring harness in the back of the car by replacing it with a spare one I had. Before I installed it, I retaped the whole thing with TESA tape, the same style of tape that VW and Audi use in their wiring harnesses. It's a great product and I'm hoping you think so too! Coroplast is the other brand of tape that is very similar to TESA and works equally as well!

    Pro Tip:
    Run the heat gun over the new tape.
    Removes the fuzz and really "locks" the tape in with a nice smooth finish.

    51036 is design for engine bay use. the tape you bought is made for interior use. good video tho well done. as you clearly stated, its made of cloth material. you should be using pet cloth LIKE 51036 instead for engine use. tesa clones do not have the model numbers located in the middle of tape. real ones do like genuine 51036. if it gets soaked with water / oil / gas, it will not sponge it up and it will not risk of starting a fire. 51036 is used on all new German vehicle for engine bay wiring. hope this helps cheers

    I work for tesa tape and our sleeve tape is most definitely the best for harnessing wires. Electric tape and plastic wire harnesses degrade and end up becoming brittle which our sleeve tape doesn't do. The quality standards we have at tesa are better than I've seen at any of the other places I've worked at. We will lose 10k and repurpose or recycle any of our tape if we see any quality control issues with it we rarely have any orders for the corporations we supply tape to that come back because we don't send anything to them that is not the quality that we wouldn't want if we bought it. Sometimes things get past us that we didn't notice but it's very very rare. The tesa plant I'm employed at had treated us really well with alot of bonuses, appreciation gifts, employee outings etc. We also have meetings every week about different subjects and have different committees like a safety committee and a continuous improvement of management meeting that focuses on helping improve our management with what employees want to see management work on. We aren't a union and there's not much of a reason so far to start a workers union but employees are pushing for better health insurance benefits right now and if that doesn't happen I'm sure there will be a huge push from employees that could be really big.

      Tesa sleeve tape doesn't seem to be nearly as easy to find as the regular style tape.

    I love this style of fleece tape. It's a good job to do when you're waiting for parts to arrive for your project. Makes everything look so much neater in the engine bay.

    I had a friend who told me to get some tape on for the wiring after one wire broke on the fuel temperature sensor in his 2012 Passat and was setting off the engine management light, he was adamant it was because VW had not covered the wiring as it goes into the plug and left that part so exposed to heat that the stem was left sticking out of the plug and he had to pay £130 for new wiring harness at the dealers. So it's a good idea to check your wiring and make sure they are protected.

    There are a lot of different tape models that Tesa makes! I've had to order quite a few of them to find one I want, but they do list specs for each model on their website. Some are better for noise and vibration and some are better for abrasion and heat in an engine bay! The worst are the ones with very low adhesion :(

    • @ThrottleGrotto
      @ThrottleGrotto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't realize they had different models of tape. The ones that I have purchased have all been similar, and have no model number designation from what I can tell.

    • @Iamcartmanxd
      @Iamcartmanxd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ThrottleGrotto It is very annoying! They don't put part numbers inside the tubes. I like 51006 for general abrasion resistance. The whole list of their tapes for harnesses can be found at tesa.com/en-us/industry/automotive/applications/wire-harnessing and you can buy some of them from Waytek and Amazon.

    Nice video. Working on a Datsun myself, 240, rewiring entire dash. How flexible is this stuff once it's all wrapped on there?? Just wondering if I need to prebend the wires to shape and then wrap with the tesa, or can I just lay everything straight and wrap, and it will bend.

    One thing I don't like about this tape is that, sometimes the end comes off after a few days. Maybe my hand was dirty and I accidentally touched the sticky side during the application but at this point there is no way to put it back. Super glue won't work. I really want to know the solution for this.

    • @ThrottleGrotto
      @ThrottleGrotto  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't had that experience using this tape at all. I tear it with my hands and rub over the outside as I'm 'sealing' the end to itself to finish the wrap.
      I've even used it on a hammer handle and it lasted for a year or so before starting to unravel.

    I remember buying several rolls to try, wasn't impressed. In fact, extremely disappointed. Unfortunately, I should have researched first instead of after. Their published product information sheet clearly states:
    ......tape for wire harness covering that is majorly applied at harnesses in the passenger compartment.
    It combines important features as noise damping, abrasion resistance and bundling strength while keeping harnesses
    flexible supporting an easy harness assembly process at the OEM.
    Notice the first quality they tout, noise damping? Further, it has no UL, NFPA, or other registrations in North America. No third party testing for little things like tear strength, voltage rating, adhesion, tensile strength, flame exposure. I couldn't, in good conscience, use this crap on a customers product. The only documented testing I could find was with regards to noise dampening. Since we had a five year warranty on our work, there was no way.
