This song is one of their best in my opinion. Not only does Layne sound wicked and super intense, the whole band sounds amazing and original. I particularly love the rhythm section here. Sean's drum grooves are totally on point and detailed. And the way Mike obtained that growl from an acoustic bass is out of this world. Let alone Jerry's guitar parts, from which the song was born and took form. Amazing band and Layne's something that can happen only once in history

This is a performance that will stand the test of time. It showed how well they played together and how well they fed off each other. They were all at their peak musically and it showed. Layne put so much emotion in his vocals that it breaks your heart just listening to him sing. Ive had many times where i felt myself living the chorus, and it hurts knowing others have too. This concert is one that i can listen to in its entirety and not get tired of it. It shows human emotions and how people are connected just through music. Layne was going through it and was able to just pour all his bound emotions into one of the best vocal performances ever. And all the instruments were blended perfectly. Whomever was the sound engineer was a beast.

I just watched Jerry Cantrell talk about this show with Lars (the Metallica guy), and Jerry was talking about something horrible -- the band about to end, the dead end one of them was approaching, that in a way made this show extra special. There won't be any more tours, or shows, or songs. Nothing. You might as well say, it's our farewell show. Without that dread looming, without that pall....man I just love this band

Some one has to actually make rock music first...and im torn. Part of me says rock is over because we dont have the type people whod make rock. Everyone is too sensitive and uptight and narcissistic and obsessed with perfection and beauty. You can say all you want about rock n roll, but not ever has the notion of vanity and narcissism been interlocked with rock music. Thats just not what rock is.
The other part of me thinks im beginning to see a rebellious undertone on the come up. Take a bunch of people who are ostracized from the woke society and are shunned as improper, and stick guitar in their hand and put them in an arena full of folks who feel the same, and maybe we get something like the next grunge movement. One that doesnt care about likes or selfies or being woke , and decides to disconnect from the web, dress like crap on purpose and are intentionally unwoke. I dont know life without rock music. Born in 80, had a sister 5 yrs older than jammed big hair band and grundge eras, my folks were hippies, so there was classic rock to explore and enjoy, then.the ealry 2000s, which i just call grownling(but i liked alot of it) so ive been surrounded by rock my entire life. In both directions. The notion of no more rock is hard to comprehend. But someone the other day brought up other styles like jazz or older stuff, and they are gone. Not just eras , but total genres of music. So its possible and looks to be the case, that rock is gone. Which just absolutely breaks my damn heart.

What does friend mean to you?

    All included but you
    Alone
The sounds of silence often soothe
Shapes and colors shift with mood
    Pupils widen, change their hue
    Rapid brown avoid clear blue
Why's it have to be this way?
    Be this way
    Be this way
    Be this way
    Be this way
    Be this way
Flowers watched through wide eyes bloom
A child sings an unclaimed tune

Off the wall, I scraped you

Sometimes those soft souls aren’t meant to be here long. Earth and life is vicious and it takes a rock to make it through this thing for a long time. Soft souls can’t handle it and that’s just how it goes, but they teach us to try and fight towards making the world a better and kinder place in the future. One day we won’t all have to be so rock hard and the loving souls before paved that way.

I’ve been so in love with their music for so many years now and I’m telling you no one can make me feel the lyrics like Layne. He was a complete master at his craft and I only wish he could have had the same passion for living as he did for telling stories. No one on this green earth like him. And probably never will be. I've really only just 'discovered' this song recently. It's taken a long time as I have been pulled deep into the first 2 albums and the EP's ....who can blame me. Anyhooo, 'Frogs' is such a unique track. It's a dark, sombre mood, a state of mind...easy to slip into, hard to shake off, much like hard core drugs. The lyrics and phrasing sit on top of the brooding minor key based melody... .the words give the melody a much needed blow job, punctuated by the relief of a chorus or 2. An understated masterpiece. ..certainly not radio friendly because it's "not gonna fuck with me again"..."don't fuck with me.again"....,.................the final stanza of a lost soul desperately seeking control as he slips deeper, to a darker place, only to find that there are still millions of deeper, darker places on the way down....hot damn but it hits different to anything, ever.....

Such a state of despair Layne must have been in by this stage, I mean, Alice In Chains has a whole catalogue of songs exploring depression, addiction, confusion, anger and despair, but this is one of the most haunting songs, not only from their own catalogue, but from pretty much anything I've ever heard. And Layne's vocal performance is still amazing, even with the lisping from the lost teeth... I used to say how sad it was when we lost Cobain in '94, and Cornell a few years ago, but Layne's death seems to be the saddest way to go, period... I love many of the songs from this Unplugged, but this has just taken the top spot out of all the other songs they performed at that live... Hauntingly beautiful...

What if Layne enjoyed his state of despair? There are those of us who are in our element when we're hovering just above rock bottom. It's all we know and it's what we always run back to. It's not how most healthy functioning people would choose to live, but then most healthy functioning people would never start to use heroin as a way to cope with life. All of us long time heroin users are all very sad, very screwed up people before we ever even touched the drug for the first time.

@@nooodles939 Honestly, I think your comment makes sense because, as much as I don't want to admit it, I also feel like that sometimes. Maybe that's the reason I love this song so much (especially this "Unplugged" version). When I see others "drowning in their emotions" or having their "storm in a teacup" moments emotionally, my first reaction is usually "Why are you doing this?", almost as if, just for that moment, I am completely oblivious to the fact that I behave just like them in comparable situations... I don't mean to judge people; in fact, everyone's free to do as they feel or want, and if they aren't, they should be. I haven't touched heroin or any other hard drugs, so I don't know what that sort of addiction feels like, and, even though I do have a tendency to go overboard with drinks occasionally, I am in control of it.
As for you "users" being "screwed up", you're NOT. You're not screwed up. You're just probably the aftermath of a series of events that emotionally broke you, or restrictions that made your curiosity and desires run wild. Or something else. But I can't call you broken. Because, if I did, I'd also have to call myself "broken", which would be like admitting defeat, like accepting that nothing will ever improve in my life, or those of the people around me.
Is it difficult to change? I don't know, but I've heard it can be very, very difficult. Is it impossible? No, it's not.
In my life so far, I have more regrets for NOT doing / trying out stuff than for doing / trying the wrong stuff. At least, it sounds that, for the stuff you maybe regret doing, now you have the knowledge (and your personal reasons) for why you shouldn't keep doing them anymore. Be that drugs, or other types of experimenting. At least you're collecting experiences. As long as you have a circle of people around you that you can trust, things will get better.

"It'll be me off the walls I scrape, you"...heartwrenching. I've been watching this performance for many years and it still never fails to stun with its sheer beauty and insightfulness...but yet, it still hurts all the same, knowing certain predetermined fates were indeed met. Rest well Layne. I hope your soul is at peace now and forever. You are missed by so many. And blessings to the Staley and AIC families always.

It's so breathtaking to listen to Layne. In this f*cking and eternal quarantine here in Brazil, I just can't sleep, waiting for the worse, wishing for the beste, preparing myself to whatever it comes. The only thing that makes me feel like breathing again is to listen to Layne, especially this show, when we can SEE his pain. I feel I'm not alone in depression. Miss you like I know you closely, Layne 💔

The line "why does it have to be this way" is so relatable to me. The way he sings it, just like every other song he sings, you know he's feeling it too. Cannot go on enough about that and the rest of the band...perfect.

No one can compare to Layne Stanley or Kurt Cobain on vocals and feeling wise , their vocals truly came from the heart and pain they had experienced

Watching this episode is incredibly sad. Despite his great performance, seeing Layne Staley at this point in his life is depressing at best.
From 5:16 on, the lyrics that he sings make it feel like he is trying to wake up from a nightmare that will never end, on a bed made of negativity and bad decisions.
I usually never say a lot of positive or hopeful things about celebrities, but I wish that he could have been able to clean up and would still be here, continuing to make great, emotional music.

    The greatest part of
Alice In Chains to me wasn’t their sound, but the little tidbits that were subtle that brought a song together into something big. Layne’s octave changes in his voice, Jerry’s slight picks at his guitar strings, Shaun’s great rhythm and creativity on the drums, and Mike’s deep and hypnotizing bass lines made every song I listen to by them mesmerizing and memorable.
