I am now 33 years old but my dad turned me on to this song about 4 years ago. I was deep in heroin/fetynal addiction. As I was listening to this song he told me how Layne Staley was found by his mother after an OD and I can honestly say there isn't not 1 other song out there that catches me like this. Happy to say Dec 27th I'll be 3 years clean!!

Thank you very much, however I'm no hero, but I was lucky enough to know and stand beside many. And I've fucked things up way more than I've ever won. It's not how many times we fall, but how many times we've stood back up. I was depressed and suicidal after the war and after loosing my family and gained almost 80 pounds in a year or so. Now I manage a chain of gyms and am in better shape than when I was in the military. The story of your life is not written in your failures, for in failing there are lessons to learn but only if you keep your heart open. It's not easy but it is worth it. Train yourself to look for and find the good in any situation. The thing itself is not bad, only our perception of the thing, once we are able to stand back and look from different perspectives we will realize the power to change the thing, obesity, depression, whatever it may be, exists inside of us. Everything you need to succeed and be happy is already inside you. I know it sounds corny but I swear it's the truth. Infinite potential exists within all of us. This is why it's so important to believe in yourself. Others will quit on you. It's just part of life. But you must never quit on yourself.

So awesome that of the top 5 ever unplugged sessions were bands from this era and scene, nirvana was 1 pearl jam was 3rd, CHAINS was 5th, they should have been first butt nonetheless, AWESOME😀

It might not exist anymore, but it did. I grew up in Seattle in the 80s and 90s, and Layne's voice in Nutshell and River of Deceit especially captures the feel of Seattle of those times. There was a sense of quiet melancholy in the area before tech came in and changed it dramatically. There will never be a way to go back to those times, but at least they still survive in the memories of those of us that were there, and through the voice of Layne Staley.

I discovered Nutshell at the peak of my depression. Nothing felt right. I had no motivation, no idea what I was doing with my life and no real emotional support from a neglectful family that I did not understand was neglectful at the time. This song reached deep down into the pit of my soul. I will always remember that day when I was unable to leave my bed and just cried endlessly to this song. It was both the darkest day of my life and the catalyst for finally fighting back. "If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead" lit a fire in me. I desperately wanted to find the value in my life. Life is still so tough til this day, but a decade after I found this song, I am so much stronger and grateful for what I have rather than fixated on what I don't. Layne helped me save my life. I am "my own" now more than ever.

My brother, age 26, died from the side effects of drug and alcohol addiction on October 8, 2020. The side effect was suicide in his case. He couldn't stop using. He wanted to stop. All the help was there. But he was too depressed to accept it. I am not mad at him for hanging himself. I'm an alcoholic as well, and I'm in active recovery; I'm 96 days clean and sober. I'll show my brother's 9 month old daughter (my beautiful niece) how much he loved her through always being there for her. That baby is mine now. Im forever living in the 90's (when it comes to music) i will never leave!! Best decade ever!!! I was 12 in 1990 - 21 by the end of '99. It's crazy how the music can take you back!!
