Thankyou so much for this video. I grew peas for the first time last year and they got absolutely annihilated by the slugs. I'm having another go this year just in a small pot to see if i can get anything from them. I now know to not only provide a support net for the peas to grow up, but to cover them on the outside with a protective cover too. It's great to see other methods of growing and getting information from seasoned gardeners who know what they're on about.

Thanks again Nigel, really helpful method of teaching. You should have been a teacher. What am I saying, you are! Just one question: Do you prepare the soil with anything special or additional before you slide the gutters in? Thanks Pat
Hello Pat, many thanks for the positive feedback, much appreciated 😀. During the previous autumn I do add plenty of rotted manure to the soil and find that this helps retain moisture for when the peas get planted out. Many thanks for watching 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
I really enjoyed watching that! I’m relieved that our birds seem to be better behaved than yours! My space is tight here so I get a crop of peas in after the bush beans come out. I’m growing a modern variety called Legacy that is tolerant to powdery mildew, Fusarium and Pea Enation virus. My seed is treated and film coated so I guess I had better not soak them but I will be sure to water every day until they come up! Do you ever sow a late crop of peas for a fall harvest? This is a fabulous series! Klaus

@@MuddyBootz I'll just refilm old recipes and add "with Peas" to the title LOL By the way, not the slightest difference in germination or size between the soaked and dry peas. I'll send a snapshot via WhatApp
Hello Nigel, are you able to say what living in zone 8b means for veg gardeners? Your presentations are fab thanks.I lived sutton coldfield 1963 to 1970
Hello and welcome to the channel 😀. The zone refers to the average minimum temperatures for the region. More commonly used in North America. If you Google growing zone 8B it will quite the temperatures. Many thanks for watching! 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Hello Stephen, Kelvedon Wonder are a good reliable cropper. I change to Hurst Greenshaft as they pod is slightly longer with a few more peas 👍 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Hi Nigel In my experience growing peas, and it's been many years now I've found it always pays not to sow them too thickly. For a novice grower it's always tempting but the plants will then have to compete with each other and you don't necessarily get more peas. The plants can get stressed which may lead to powdery mildew. I've had this happen in the past. Now I spread them a bit more and they do much better. According to most seed packets you supposed to sow them about 2 inches apart and 'Gardener's World' online state 4 inches. I think maybe this is too much. It can also depend how wide the row is as well. I'm fortunate I can start them directly into the ground as I don't get problems with mice but nothing wrong with the gutter method of course. Everyone has their own ideas and most work. It can also depend on where you live, soil conditions, local weather, even the variety you choose. You made me smile when mentioning about pinching peas when a boy. I used to do this but I always got found out. Maybe I should've hidden the empty pods!
Hi Steve, yes thinner sowings has definitely worked for me. For the soil prep I always have a good layer of rotted cow manure beneath them, usually done the previous autumn. This does retain moisture better and they love it! Many thanks for watching 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
👍Very good, you make it look so simple. Did I see you had some black buckets on a plot, were these by any chance potatoes you are growing, if so is there a link to your method.? 🤔
Brilliant as usual. I am trying alderman this year and hope that they do well. Last year mine got cooked in the hot spring and I only got a couple of pods. We live n learn xx
Hi, I had the same problem with the sun last year. I’m also trying alderman this year for the first time, I like the idea of easy (hopefully) picking without having to bend down too much.
Hi Guys, when you dig out the trench try to add plenty of organic matter or well rotted manure. This will help keep the peas hydrated during any prolonged hot spells, should we be lucky enough to get any 😀. Many thanks for watching 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Yes I used scaffold poles for support but owing to them being later cropping, they got hit by pea moth most times so I changed to Hurst Greenshaft 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Loved this Nigel!! I was able to start my peas last year at this time of year and it was my best crop ever... pre-soaked my seeds too!! I can't even sow them until May and that's too late here, it will be too hot, but, I'm still going to try... I'll get them out on the balcony if I have too to give them a head start before that, but, I will grow them!! I have NePlus Ultra from Willie! First time I ever saw the eavestrough method was on your channel, oh so long ago!! It's magical to watch!! That's me right there.. having a munch before I even get one into the bucket!LOL Those are really lovely peas!! No such thing as too many peas! Hey Pea Pod Wine... I'm in! LOL Nice to see this Nigel!! I totally love this series and the start to finish, my friend!! 💖
Hello Chris, I was wondering if you could try a few smaller staggered sowings and maybe at least one would come good? Many thanks for watching 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
I can absolutely try that Nigel... and I will! I just purchased a garden arbour for my balcony, so I'm going to sow some there today, to see how it does.. the rest I can sow at the plot, staggered and we can see how I make out!! Cheers, my friend!! Enjoy your day!!💖@@MuddyBootz
Hi Nigel going back to your blog on potatoes , your main crop in buckets, when they have finished do you keep the buckets covered or do you leave them in out in the rain, thank you
Hello Roger, I do cover the buckets and let the soil dry out. This prevents the tubers from rotting. Keep a lookout for my upcoming video where I empty the remaining buckets. Many thanks for watching 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Hi Vanessa, it is a plastic coated mesh supported at intervals by metal poles. I will explain it better in a Viewers Question Time in an upcoming video 😀 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
I got better crop by spreading them thinner around 5cm. Sowing them thickly they suffered with powdery mildew due to last of air flow 👍 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Hello and welcome to the channel 😀. A real good question!!! I reckon Heritage is used more in UK and Heirloom is more common in North American. To define it I would say that heirloom varieties have probably been handed down through generations of families and heritage varieties have been managed and controlled by seed companies. Many thanks for watching! 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
@@MuddyBootz Nigel, thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Still working through first and second early potatoes vs determinate and indeterminate here in the US. Your new start to finish videos are outstanding, thanks for sharing. 👍❤
I go a little further than you. I use a sprouter and when the first hhots come through plant them in drainage channels until a few inches tall then lant them in thesoil in rows.
Hello Rob, welcome to the channel 😀. Kelvedon Wonder will grow to around 1 mtr high....for the really tall ones (2mtr +) try Alderman. Many thanks for watching! 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Our experience of peas and mangetouts where we are is that pigeons go mad for them to the extent that they are willing to squeeze their way into protective metal cages just to get to them. However, they seem to only want the new shoots and once the plants are more than about 30cm tall, they lose all interest in them and you can leave them completely uncovered.
Hi Julian, sparrows seem to be the main problem on our site and they are taking the tips all of the time, that is why I eventually netted them to save the crop 😀 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻

@@MuddyBootz I'll just refilm old recipes and add "with Peas" to the title LOL
By the way, not the slightest difference in germination or size between the soaked and dry peas.

Kelvedon Wonder for me this year Nigel, first time trying them..
Hello Stephen, Kelvedon Wonder are a good reliable cropper. I change to Hurst Greenshaft as they pod is slightly longer with a few more peas 👍

Hi Nigel
In my experience growing peas, and it's been many years now I've found it always pays not to sow them too thickly.
Many thanks for watching 😀

@@christine6878 I am totally with you there. I have a couple of arches set up in anticipation xx
Hi Guys, when you dig out the trench try to add plenty of organic matter or well rotted manure. This will help keep the peas hydrated during any prolonged hot spells, should we be lucky enough to get any 😀. Many thanks for watching 😀
🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Alderman is a brilliant pea to grow about 6ft. Tall. Need to have good support
Yes I used scaffold poles for support but owing to them being later cropping, they got hit by pea moth most times so I changed to Hurst Greenshaft 😀

Many thanks for watching 😀
🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Many thanks for watching 😀

👍👍👍
Hi Nigel, what’s the support system you use for growing the peas up, some people use sticks but I’m liking the look of this 👍🏻
Hi Vanessa, it is a plastic coated mesh supported at intervals by metal poles. I will explain it better in a Viewers Question Time in an upcoming video 😀
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Last year I had 1 per per upright of the support, this year i've done it right and bang a pea in every 2cm (in a zig zag)
I got better crop by spreading them thinner around 5cm. Sowing them thickly they suffered with powdery mildew due to last of air flow 👍

Sir Another great video. Can you tell me what the clear plastic you used to protect the pea after you 1st planted them?
Is heritage the same as heirloom?
Oregon, USA.
Love this channel. ❤👍😊

@@MuddyBootz Nigel, thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Still working through first and second early potatoes vs determinate and indeterminate here in the US.
Your new start to finish videos are outstanding, thanks for sharing. 👍❤
Ok
Who was that young Chap ?
did you know that Batchelors 'bigga peas' sprout ...i wonder what variety they are?
The marrofat pea that Batchelors use is the variety Bunting.
Many thanks Trevor, that is useful to know 👍

How long is it from sowing to harvesting? Thanks
Hi Bas, not sure offhand but the dates are shown in each section of the video 👍

I go a little further than you. I use a sprouter and when the first hhots come through plant them in drainage channels until a few inches tall then lant them in thesoil in rows.
Hello Colin and welcome to the channel. Always good to hear of other methods that work 👍 Many thanks for watching 😀

Hi Nigel when you did your peas how much watering do you get them
Hello Michael, I wait until the compost is dry and then give them a good soaking..about twice per week
Are kelvdon wonder a tall variety of peas?
Hello Rob, welcome to the channel 😀. Kelvedon Wonder will grow to around 1 mtr high....for the really tall ones (2mtr +) try Alderman. Many thanks for watching! 😀

@@MuddyBootz perfect, I have kelvdon wonder and was hoping they weren’t a tall variety, thanks Nigel, its good to be here 😁

@@MuddyBootz oh,thank you,this help me a lot
Our experience of peas and mangetouts where we are is that pigeons go mad for them to the extent that they are willing to squeeze their way into protective metal cages just to get to them. However, they seem to only want the new shoots and once the plants are more than about 30cm tall, they lose all interest in them and you can leave them completely uncovered.
Hi Julian, sparrows seem to be the main problem on our site and they are taking the tips all of the time, that is why I eventually netted them to save the crop 😀
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
@@MuddyBootz Pigeons are our many enemy. We also get a lot of squirrels from Six Acre Wood next door. We have recently had issues with badgers. There are parakeets nearby but we haven't seen them come onto the site.
Can you do in pots
Yes... you can grow in large buckets with supports or sow seeds in modular trays and then plant them out
👍👍👍
Many thanks for watching Monara 😀
