Hi Nigel, another great video. I,ll be watching this one again closer to our spring. I did do an experiment with one bucket last year and total failure. So next time i'll follow your expert advise. Not much gardening here at the moment. Had heavy rain all week and predicted next week as well. So i,ll just have to sit back and watch more of your video. Cheers buddy, Keep safe, look forward to the next video.
I am amazed at the amount of potatoes from each container. Just hope I can get half as good a harvest as you in this my first attempt to grow them. Chilling is coming along very slowly😥 .
We grew all our potatoes in bins, stacked tires, totes. Anything we could find around the homestead. This was the first time we had tried growing them in totes. We ended up planting 27 bins etc. And we ended up harvesting 160 pounds in August 2020. So we thought let's use some sprouting potatoes we had and fill them again. We only had enough seed potatoes to fill 12 again. And we ended up getting another 50 pounds out of those. We harvested those in early November. I have already planted 8 of our bins with a potato named warba. Didnt grow that kind last year. But going to try them this year. Also got Kennebec, Yukon and russet burbank. Going to plant more bins this spring. As I canned alot of the potatoes from last year. And we used all the canned potatoes up by Feb. And had to buy 50 pounds more to can. So I would like it if I could grow enough to can all we need for the year. As we really love canned potatoes. But just a note. Red potatoes don't can well. They mush out too much. So I'm not growing any red ones this year. And no purple potatoes as my hubby doesn't like them. I think their ok. Not my fav either. But all the white potatoes canned good. But at the age of 61. Growing potatoes in totes. Its so much easier! My hubby thought it sounded like a weird idea. But went along with it. I showed him videos of other older people doing it and getting a good amount of potatoes. He is now a convert. No back breaking digging. Then all the back breaking digging them back up! Only way this homestead and us older gardeners are EVER growing potatoes again! Happy gardening everyone!
Hello Lori and welcome to the channel 😀. Good to hear of your success story 👍 I am now growing potatoes all year round for the past two years and the containers have certainly saved my back. Many thanks for watching 😀 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
I was interested about you using manure in the bottom of the buckets, I thought it may have made it too rich, but you know what your doing! Thank you 😊
Hello Anita, if you look carefully, I add a layer of soil mix on top of the manure before placing the tubers, so they do not touch. The manure will seep into the soil as it gets wet, diluted and providing food 👍. Many thanks for watching! 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Love your growing guides Nigel, so much!! I would really love to use containers this year, but, the cost of the containers and extra compost is prohibitive for me this year. I must put them in the ground this time around! Perhaps next year when I get settled into another new home, I'll get the chance to do it this way. I much prefer the bucket for just those reasons you've cited! Added this to my reference list for growing! I'll be revisiting!! Hell of a harvest on that tarp!! Silly fox, running through containers! No doubt they will now run through netting and pots! LOL Nice hauls!! Huge potatoes!! Great vid, Nigel!! Thank you!! Happy St. Paddys day!🍀💖
Hi Nigel, my 4 year old and I love watching them, we always learn so much. We are also from Birmingham and it’s lovely to know you are local. You’ve really motivated us to grow things this year. I wanted to ask if your 30L bucket had drainage holes? Also, would first early potatoes grow well with just regular compost if we didn’t have the fish and bone and manure? Many thanks in advance! Sarah
Hello Sarah and welcome to the channel 😀. Yes regular compost will be OK. Just remember to keep them well watered....also a drink every couple of weeks with some tomato fertiliser will help swell the tubers 😀👍 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Thank you so much, I've ordered all the bits, looking forward to starting. Do you think it's worth trying carrots in the buckets? I have a very small garden!
Hi Sarah, carrots will definitely work in buckets. Make sure the bucket is deep (30cm min) and do not sow them too thickly 👍 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Great stuff nigel, I have purchased 10 of these tubs on tony oniels recommendation. It's a great way to grow my favorite home guard! Loving this new series of vids xx.
I have 100 seed potatoes planted inground 4 different varieties. This is also my first time growing potatoes in containers I have about half of them started. I have them under 6 mill plastic hoop frames and already had 2 frosts 22° farenheit I'm not sure i think 32° farenheit is 0 Celsius? Everything survived and I have potatoes and onions sprouting already. That's 47 days earlier than ever before in my 6b zone. If my containers are as full of potatoes as yours are I'll be very happy. I only have determinate varieties this year. We're going big with potatoes and onions this year. I enjoy watching UK gardeners, most seem to use as much of the space they have to grow food. I've taken this approach to gardening also.
Hi there Nigel, I was going to plant up my containers tomorrow, but we're due a frost on Saturday morning. Do you reckon it's safe to plant them as planned? I'll be keeping them in the poly tunnel for now, mainly to keep the foxes off. They were murder last year, and dug right in to the buckets, which knocked them back. Sean Cameron told me that some peppermint oil puts them off. Great video as always! Cheers - Steve.
Thank you Nigel for giving me this attachment. This is my second year of growing but due to a medical condition I looked at an alternative to heavy digging, and tubs seems to be the ideal solution. Looking at other you tubers doing this some recommend only putting two seeds in the bottom, and others like yourself have put in four, they say they do this due to more than two reduces the size of the potato, What is your opinion on this.?.🤔
Hello Michael, I do 2 layers of 2 tubers for first & second earlies only. For main crop I only use 2 tubers. In general, first and seconds produce tubers that tend to grow on one level whereas Main crop grow on multiple levels have giving them more height in the tub, plus the new tubers tend to be larger.. Hope this explains. Many thanks for watching! 😀 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
@@MuddyBootz Nigel, I have a number of various potato seeds that I thought by now would have some chits of a size but they are only just trying to get from the seed potato, is there something I should be doing to bring the chits on.?🤔

Hi Nigel, I’ve bought buckets this year 30L, didn’t realise you put 4 tubers in; might need to buy some more! I only have organic chicken pellets or a huge bag of Growmore. Hubby bought it not realising it’s not organic so don’t want to waste it. Can I use either of these?
Hi Vanessa, I do 2 layers of 2 tubers for first & second earlies only. For main crop I only use 2 tubers. In general, first and seconds produce tubers that tend to grow on one level whereas Main crop grow on multiple levels have giving them more height in the tub, plus the new tubers tend to be larger. Both Growmore (slow release) and chicken pellets (high Nitrogen) will be fine. Start feeding high potash from late May to boost tuber growth. Tomato feed or Comfrey Tea (comfrey leaves soaked in water) are both fine for this 👍 🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
@@MuddyBootz thanks for your reply. I popped into a new garden centre & grabbed a bag or Sarpo Mira plus some granular potato fertiliser. Plenty for the buckets now 👍🏻🌾
Hello Nigel, just subscribed. Very helpful video thank you. Just got an allotment and want to ask how long do the potatoes store in the bags and where do you store them? We are a family of four so I was also wondering if you had any advice on how many potatoes I would need to grow. Thank you again Karen
Hello Karen and welcome to the channel 😀. If you store the potatoes in a paper sack in a cool dark place, they should store for at least 3 months. The main crop will usually store a bit longer. Your second question is difficult to answer, it can depend on how many times you eat potatoes each week and are you trying to be self sufficient all year round? Are you growing in the ground or containers? If you get back to me I will try to help 👍 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
@@MuddyBootz Thanks for getting back to me. I was planning on growing in the ground as I have plenty of room. We eat around 2kg of red pots (ie roosters) and 500g of news. Thanks Nigel, much appreciated.
Hello Carla and welcome to the channel 😀.... Yes the potatoes will definitely grow in burlap sacks...just remember to check the compost regular to make sure it does not dry out 👍 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Hi Nigel, Thank you for the info you gave me at the beginning of the season to grow as explained. My 22 pots are not doing too bad, some stalks are much larger bigger than others, the flowers on the top have now gone, but not seen before there are very small , looking like, cherry tomatoes growing where the flowers were. Have you any idea what these are, and a fellow gardener is the same, and wondered if they were edible.( yuk.? ). If the trial growing this way is successful, then say no more, that’s the way it will be. I have done as I believe you did once, and that is grow in the ground, they are doing ok also, but what the quantity will be is to be seen. My only concern as to whether I have done right or wrong is is that I have watered every day until the water runs out of the bottom of the tubs, my fear is it could rot the crop, what do you think.? 🤔😊🍺
Those "cherry tomatoes" are potato seed pods. DONT EAT THEM they are POISONOUS. They contain solanine the same chemical contained in green potatoes and the haulms. DONT EAT THE GREEN PORTION of a potato either. Dont overwater potatoes. They require drainage. Put a finger in down to the knuckle. Simply check the soil is moist. Unless you live in a hot climate once a day is most likely too often. If it is not moist, water it. You are correct - water pots till the water runs from the holes. If a pot is extremely dry, water it till water drains from the holes. Come back an hour later and repeat. This is to ensure the pot is moist because a very dry pot may result in the soil repelling water. I hope that helps.
Hi Nigel, I have a question The first layer you added to the containers Horse muck was that well rotted or can it be most recent. Great guidance to watch & learn
I'm new to growing potatoes. Could i just ask you to clarify. Did you leave potatoes planted last year in the buckets until March this year? Sorry if I've picked you up wrong.
Hello Allister and welcome to the channel 😀 Yes I planted them in 17 April 2020 and started harvesting 1st March 2021.I could have harvested from September but chose to leave them.....I still have 6 more buckets to empty 😀 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Seems the main crop harvested at 45 weeks, the plants would have died off the previous fall. So leaving them in the buckets until Spring would be more of a natural way of storing them long term. No leaves, no growth. That would be, as long as the soil doesn't freeze and stay frozen. We are in Maine, USA. The ground here freezes feet deep and stays frozen for 4-5 months. If the soil drops below 4-5° C, the starches turn to sugar. Still good to use for seed potatoes, but not very tasty. Excellent tutorial, touched all bases completely. TYFS
HI Rob, I now cover the beds surrounding the tubs with horse manure. This works as a mulch to keep down weeds and also feeds the soil for the following year crops 😀

Hi Geri, the containers have certainly rewarded me in many ways, no aching back, less pest damage and also ease of harvest. A winner all round 👍

That's one of the things I haven't tried. Container growing that is. I see you have some impressive harvests from them. Stay well. Best wishes Bob.
Hi Bob, containers are definitely worth a shot providing you remember to keep them watered 👍

Hi mate, it is my sixth year of growing Sarpos and I know they won't let me down. I notice more and more people on here are starting to grow them as well 👍

Excellent as always Nigel! Very impressed with those Sarpo’s! Will definitely be leaving some of mine in the pots to harvest during the winter. All the best, Martin.
Hi Martin, they store well providing the compost doesn't get waterlogged. I pop a tarp over the top of mine 👍

Brilliant video Nigel I absolutely love the type that you do. This year I will be trying to grow potatoes in the 30ltr buckets, I've bought 10, but I'm going to try all my varieties just to see how they do.

Nice Potato haul. I agree it's so much easier in buckets to harvest.

@@MuddyBootz you are welcome Nigel. I have been looking at your videos for quite some time now and have learned a lot from you
We grew all our potatoes in bins, stacked tires, totes.
Many thanks for watching 😀

I am loving your videos
Thank you again, getting mine ready
I was interested about you using manure in the bottom of the buckets, I thought it may have made it too rich, but you know what your doing! Thank you 😊
Hello Anita, if you look carefully, I add a layer of soil mix on top of the manure before placing the tubers, so they do not touch. The manure will seep into the soil as it gets wet, diluted and providing food 👍. Many thanks for watching!
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
I tried sarpo last year but found them to be very hard to cut

Just remember to keep them well watered....also a drink every couple of weeks with some tomato fertiliser will help swell the tubers 😀👍
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Thank you so much, I've ordered all the bits, looking forward to starting. Do you think it's worth trying carrots in the buckets? I have a very small garden!
Hi Sarah, carrots will definitely work in buckets. Make sure the bucket is deep (30cm min) and do not sow them too thickly 👍

@@MuddyBootz your welcome
Much love xoxox

@@MuddyBootz Morning Nigel, yes that all sounds sensible, on that I will do the same to try, Thank you so much for your advice.😊

Hi Nigel, thank you for the helpful tips, quick question how do you know when they are ready to harvest? Thanks Emma new grower!!
Hello and welcome to the channel 😀 A good indicator to harvest is when the foliage and flowers begin to droop over....but make sure that this is not cause by lack of water and the soil being dry. many thanks for watching!

Amazing buddy if only 👏 ❤️ my first try this year 5 lots planted in large plant pots and not even half the size of yours and no where near the amount, please help once again Amazing
Hiya Nigel, you inspired us to try spuds in pots after having not much luck in the ground. Can you tell us how often you would water them at this time of year? How much will they need? Ta, Jules and David 😁
Hello both and welcome to the channel 😀. April I water around once per week and increase to twice from Mid-late May. Having plenty of humus (ie rooted horse manure in the bottom helps retain moisture. Many thanks for watching! 😀

@@MuddyBootz brilliant! Thanks very much Nigel 👍
Tomato feed or Comfrey Tea (comfrey leaves soaked in water) are both fine for this 👍
🌻Nigel…………MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
If you get back to me I will try to help 👍
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
@@MuddyBootz Thanks for getting back to me. I was planning on growing in the ground as I have plenty of room. We eat around 2kg of red pots (ie roosters) and 500g of news. Thanks Nigel, much appreciated.

Hello Carla and welcome to the channel 😀.... Yes the potatoes will definitely grow in burlap sacks...just remember to check the compost regular to make sure it does not dry out 👍
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
👍👍👍
How many main crop tubers do you plant in each tub?
Its listed in the video for all types 😀
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
Hello Chris, the manure was about 6-8 weeks old 👍
I'm new to growing potatoes. Could i just ask you to clarify. Did you leave potatoes planted last year in the buckets until March this year? Sorry if I've picked you up wrong.
Hello Allister and welcome to the channel 😀 Yes I planted them in 17 April 2020 and started harvesting 1st March 2021.I could have harvested from September but chose to leave them.....I still have 6 more buckets to empty 😀
🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
@@MuddyBootz Thankyou
👍🏾
Seems the main crop harvested at 45 weeks, the plants would have died off the
previous fall. So leaving them in the buckets until Spring would be more of
a natural way of storing them long term. No leaves, no growth. That would be, as
long as the soil doesn't freeze and stay frozen. We are in Maine, USA. The ground
here freezes feet deep and stays frozen for 4-5 months. If the soil drops below 4-5° C,
the starches turn to sugar. Still good to use for seed potatoes, but not very tasty.
Excellent tutorial, touched all bases completely.
TYFS
Next year you might want to put cardboard down under the buckets to keep the weeds from growing.
HI Rob, I now cover the beds surrounding the tubs with horse manure. This works as a mulch to keep down weeds and also feeds the soil for the following year crops 😀
