    Hestia is a great Brussel sprout variety which I have grown for several years. So good that the deer who jumped the fence into my garden in December cleaned them right off. Didn't even leave a thank you note! My wife saw a coyote hanging around the fence shortly afterward.

I look forward to seeing many more (do you have a list of what we can look forward to in the future)? Yours is, as far as I am concerned, one of the best on TH-cam. Hi Nigel. this new series of yours is just what is needed. I started three years ago when I got my allotment and have learned so much from you already, but this series just adds to it. One request though. How about a section on caring for the plant as it grows? With brassicas I never know whether they should be fed and if so, how often and with what. Thanks for all your hard work. Tony

    • @MuddyBootz
      @MuddyBootz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Tony and welcome to the channel 😀. A good point you have raised and something I will include in future videos in the series. With brassicas, most of the food will come from the ground if you have prepared it earlier with well rotted manure or spent compost , but as they are leafy plants, Nitrogen is always a welcome addition. A scattering of slow release Growmore a week or two after planting out and another one around September, just to boost them. Nettles soaking in a barrel of water is a great free Nitrogen feed 😀

I need root trainers! Thank you! I love hearing the birdsong in the background, it's been a while! This may be a disadvantage to me to have a bed I've never grown in .. I'll also need to know my PH levels.. Thank you! I suspect the shuffle will be my only option as they will be rototilling! .. Thank you! How far apart are those bulb planter holes for the brassicas, Nigel? Looks like about 18-24 inches? Yes? A shame I won't know my soil to know if it has club root! Fingers crossed, it does not! Your cabbages are gorgeous!! I got so much out of this my friend! Thank you very much for the vast amount of knowledge you've shared here! Into my reference bookmarks you go to add to the others! It's greatly appreciated!! Have an awesome weekend!!💚

      Eagle eyed Chris.....the stray seed,well spotted!! It came just on cue 🤣. The plants are 18" apart, and same again between rows. I am sure you will be able to pick up a cheap pH meter from Walmart. Many thanks for your regular support...it is much appreciated 😀

      Now that's something I've never been accused of! LOL.. Not exactly an "attention to details" kinda gal, but, you brought it up... and made me look!! 😅😂🤣 It was funny, and yes, right on cue! Thanks, I'll check Walmart for my list, I'm sure they will! Thank you for the awesome videos (and answers)! They will be instrumental to my growing season, as they always have been! (even when I was off YT)! Cheers, Nigel! Have a great weekend!💚@@MuddyBootz

    Hi Nigel
    I was hoping you'd do one on brassicas. My favourite genus. I've done well growing them over the years. Probably cabbage being my most successful, but one brassica I've never perfected are brussel sprouts. When I see yours they look perfect. A full stem of nice sized buttons. Mine seem to 'blow' at the bottom and I can't always get them to grow all that big. I've tried different varieties and methods but as yet I've not been completely successful. I notice you grow Crispus so I've got a packet. There's only 15 seeds so I may have to buy more! You have some nice tips which I'll take on board. Here's hoping this year!

      Hi Steve, with the blown sprouts I had this the first year until I added a stake at each plant and start tying then in once they are about 1ft (30cm) tall. Never had any problems since 👍

    Hi Nigel, been a keen gardener all my life, as well as having a garden, i also have an Allotment where I grew all my Veg. Fruit & Flowers. Dabble a bit in the Show Veg/ Flowers. Am a qualified National Dahlia Judge and judge a lot of of local shows. Have only just joined your channel and find it most interesting, as they say in the gardening world, you learn something new every day.

    Nice informative video Nigel,, I chop rhubarb leaves and stalks into the planting hole to help prevent club root,, along with a good handful of well rotted home made compost and a sprinkling of blood fish and bone ,, never used lime and I get great results,, I water the planting hole too,, wishes, Lisa

    Hi Nigel As a well seasoned Gardner even so there’s always something to learn which I do with your channel so thank you for that. Just a thought I had you probably already know this but live in Rurel as I do I find that you can buy lime cheaper in a bigger sack from farming suppliers may be something you may want to try .Or pass on to others many thanks .Kind regards William

    Great tip ..pop the plants out of the seed tray from underneath with a small cane. How have I sown so many plants over the years without working this out? That was a really great video, so useful to see the whole process from sowing to harvest. I've watched so many videos where seeds go in, you might get a germination update if you're lucky and that is where it ends...so frustrating.

    Great informative vlog Nigel. The gardener’s shuffle has a name, it was named after a leak grower in Lincolnshire, I’m blowed if I can remember his name though. Take care.

    Thanks for making it a true "step by step". It took you a full growing season to put this video together. I'm a gardener in Maine USA. Never had much luck with common brassicas. Kale the exception. I was not aware that they could tolerate deep planting of the seedlings. I do this with tomatoes.
