I'm the original owner of a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition with the 4.7-liter V8. I've been driving it every day for 17 years, and I still love it. My best advice to anyone thinking of getting a 4Runner: Be sure to get all the options and the color you want because you're likely to be driving it for decades.
2006 Toyota Sport still going strong and still beautiful with 210,000 miles. My wife and I saved cash for our next 4Runner but we just haven’t needed to buy one. They only get sexier with age. Just told her yesterday that we’ll go all out since we’ll be driving it for 20 years!
We just got one too! My genius dad though traded our Tesla model S cause he thought there was something wrong with it. He got a Volvo xc40 recharge and that turned out to be shit ( it drove 200 km then needed a recharge). We ended trading that for a brand new 2022 4runner. Amazing car but it hurts to drive it ( what with the gas prices and everything).
Great review - I've had two 4Runners in the last 22 years - my current one is a 2006 Limited with 286,000 miles. Still runs like a champ... I only wish Toyota would upgrade the fuel efficiency...
There will be a redesign possibly for 2023, but truthfully, they do not need one to sell this vehicle. As it is now, every 4Runner is sold before it gets to the lot. For all the complainers about this "old" design and technology, they need to remember who is buying this vehicle. White males between the ages of 40 and 65 are the primary purchasers of new 4Runners. In that demographic, reliability is the #1 factor in choosing a vehicle. Bells, whistles and redesigns are secondary or even a non issue. This age group also considers resale value, but likely drives cars into the ground before they trade or sell. For this demographic, the 4Runner is a gift from God. They get their leather, sun roof (they refuse to call it a moon roof), and a lot of storage space. They get an off road vehicle, but are unlikely to drive it off road. They prefer the "tried and true" design, technology, engine and suspension, rather than the newest, latest, and greatest "UNTESTED" things. The only disappointment to them is the gas mileage, but they will live with it. If we were in the 1960's or 1970's, this would be a discussion about Cadillacs.
100%, good comment, your reasoning is why I got one last July. Luckily I got my special order in in time to get a Gray Nightshade before pricing went crazy. I was coming out of a Subaru Ascent Touring, and it was down to the Telluride or the 4Runner. I really wanted old school, bullet proof, limited bells and whistles, etc. I drove the Telluride (SX Prestige) and didn't t like it near as much as I thought I would. I love the 4R, love the "ancient" drivetrain too. My wife has an MDX Advance which she loves, but she said the other day the 4Runner is her favorite vehicle so far. It's just honest and basic, but seems "bulletproof" like that's the one we will want to drive if there is a zombie apocalypse. lol Would have preferred the TRD Pro, but it didn't have parking sensors. Yes, that was a deal breaker for the wife. Also love seeing that it was actually made in Japan and no less from the same plant that rolls out the Land Cruiser. Also, I am right in the targeted demographic you mentioned. lol

My favorite thing about the 4Runner is the tailgate window. I had a 1995 Ford Bronco and those old Broncos had the same feature. I loved cruising with it down and it was great for quick access to the rear.
2022 could be your last chance to get a true old school naturally aspirated body on frame SUV from the best off road manufacturer in the world. Snap it up if you can!
They are nearly impossible to get. Especially the Limiteds. And dealers are asking and getting $10-$15k over MSRP. They likely will bring what you pay for them next year if you want to sell. The Land Cruisers are insane right now as well as 21 is the last year for the naturally aspirated V8 and no gimmicky turbos.

Traded my 2016 limited 4runner for a 2022 limited 4runner. Love the SUVs, this is my 3rd one to purchase. My only complaint is the birds eye view of the backup camera.....its blurry. The 2015 and 2016 cameras were very clear. Taken to service department and even reported to the Toyota Representatives at Toyota Motor Company. It appears that this is something that I will have to be content with. My only question is why was the 2015 and 2016 backup cameras excellent in clarity but the 2022 is blurry. Any others have the same problem?
Toyota- Please, please put the new Tundra 3.5 turbo V6 in this car. Much more power combined with significantly better fuel economy. It's a no-brainer. This SUV is already a legend. That engine would get so many more people to buy it. And it would be even more fun to drive.
Ugh I had a Army Green 2022 4Runner Limited in my hands and decided to wait until the weekend because I was not sure it was a good vehicle. Of course it was sold after I checked tons of reviews saying the same: solid, reliable and capable SUV. Now I’m looking for a 22 AWD 4RUNNER Limited and I can’t find one.
My rental car agent put me in a 4 runner for the day. I currently own and drive a Lexus GX daily and the 4 Runner was a generous C- at best. The suspension was all over the place, noisy interior, Green ECO light glaring at me with no way to turn it off, goofy button\control layout ,etc.... I can go on & on ! Like other crossovers, the Passport's main advantage is fuel economy. The AWD torque management system is excellent in low traction conditions, but it's no rear locking differential, or 4WD in low range.
13:32 what’s those two switch blanks there for? I guess you can add your own switches such as for controlling a winch and fog lights? They should have just built-in AUX switches like the new Bronco has.
It’s nice that Toyota screwed all of the AG TRD Pro owners that payed a premium and giving every other model the option of the TRD Pro colors. Toyota has lost our support for numerous reasons, but this is especially annoying.
I’ll wait for 2023 maybe the look will change. 2022 looks the same as the previous one since 2010 I think. Don’t buy your car right now they will rip you off. I’ll wait until everything return to normal.
Thanks, but it’s still the same old design to me; waiting for the redesign for 2024. The model needs a refresh, with higher transmission gears to improve the MPG.
bought a 2010 limited change the lights with a bumper mod only cost me $350, the trucks cost me $11k spent another $1700 4 a stage 2 and new wheels and rim set up look practiclly brand new with a shit ton of after market mods for less than $2500 total only 110k mi. barley even broken in avg 20 mpg. this 2022 is waste of money for the same amount of mpg. not worth it thats how dated these newer trucks r
Wish the 2022 had a power assist tailgate and a heated steering wheel. I can’t honestly say I like my 2020 4Runner more than the Jeep’s I’ve had. I might end up going back to my tried and true Jeep.
Always the same comment with the Tacoma and the 4Runner, this is not meant for speed, yes it is slow. That is not what it is made for. That is the part that just makes me cringe, you drive another vehicle and wow. These, not really, not mean’t for that. It has a governor transmission that doesn’t let you zoom. That sucks!
@@toyshop98 well said, if you don’t want all the tech I say the 4Runner cause the reliability on them is outstanding. The redesign is gonna Hanna have everything like The New Tundra has

first comment! awesome video
Appreciate it!
Renting one right now...SR 5 version
Yeah its reliable, but 16 city and 19 hwy mpg , with gas prices now
It’s nice that Toyota screwed all of the AG TRD Pro owners that payed a premium and giving every other model the option of the TRD Pro colors. Toyota has lost our support for numerous reasons, but this is especially annoying.
Green, why green?
truth is 4runner cabin is smaller then honda crv , if u nit buying off road don't waste money on other trim
old old old truck. hasn't been updated in forever.
Naaaah! Bigger changes coming in 2023. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
I’ll wait for 2023 maybe the look will change. 2022 looks the same as the previous one since 2010 I think. Don’t buy your car right now they will rip you off. I’ll wait until everything return to normal.
Great work, Great Review thanks for sharing 👍 👍👍🗽🇺🇸
For me TRD off Road package!!
The Vermonter
Thanks, but it’s still the same old design to me; waiting for the redesign for 2024.
The model needs a refresh, with higher transmission gears to improve the MPG.
What a great vehicle, Im looking forward for a promotion to buy this reliable and awesome machine.
19 MPH highway? Dinosaur!
bought a 2010 limited change the lights with a bumper mod only cost me $350, the trucks cost me $11k spent another $1700 4 a stage 2 and new wheels and rim set up look practiclly brand new with a shit ton of after market mods for less than $2500 total only 110k mi. barley even broken in avg 20 mpg. this 2022 is waste of money for the same amount of mpg. not worth it thats how dated these newer trucks r
Wish the 2022 had a power assist tailgate and a heated steering wheel. I can’t honestly say I like my 2020 4Runner more than the Jeep’s I’ve had.
I might end up going back to my tried and true Jeep.
Fiats suck
12.4 mpg! Ouch!
That sucks!
No power lift gate👎
This or Ford Expedition
Right now it’s hard to say but I would say wait for the redesign of the 4Runner or the GX.
@@toyshop98 well said, if you don’t want all the tech I say the 4Runner cause the reliability on them is outstanding. The redesign is gonna Hanna have everything like The New Tundra has
I'm sorry man but you take way too fast for me to catch whst you're saying. I had to pause too many times.
OLD OLD OLD! Very few updates BIG DEAL! Needs Badly a FULLY REFRESH ALL NEW BODY AND MORE!
They are selling like crazy. The design and engineering are time tested and bulletproof. People that buy this want reliability, and they get it. Huge updates bring new bugs that have already been worked out in this model. There will be a redesign in 2023 and people will continue to buy this model on the used market.
Big Trunk
#Wait4Redesign
Nope not for me. Like the rugged look better. I’d be afraid to take this off road
No changes , shame with now days tech.
Those Wheels have to go....
Really need a new engine. Gas mileage sucks.
I hope this thing doesn't have the start-stop junk on it.
Offer a better engine and panoramic sunroof
Who fucking cares- when does the 6th Gen come out
with that 5 speed vintage engine, 2022 4 runner is shit.
Weak horsepower
You speak WAY too fast
everything about it is old. its a joke
It’s trash bronco is king
