  • Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This new 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport is one of them. The Toyota 4Runner is a midsize 2-row SUV that competes primarily with the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. The TRD Sport trim is a somewhat sportier, on-road variant of the Toyota 4Runner. In this video, we drive the Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport to review its positives and negatives from a family perspective.

    You don’t need to remove the 2nd row headrests; a lever flips them forward 90° and they fit into the notch under the seat bottoms once they’ve been folded forward first.

      Just shows that these 2 know nothing about the car. Lol

      Actually if you’re a tall person and your front seats are moved all the way back and you don’t remove the headrests from the rear seats, you have to lean or move both front seats forward. Which is annoying if you’re in a hurry to fold the seats down.

    Perhaps an underrated but compelling reason to go with the T4R is it’s huge aftermarket support and deep enthusiast community. Parts galore! It’s easy to work on. Simplicity is an art.

    I bought my 2010 4runner brand new. It has been a DREAM to own. It still drives like the day I bought it! 141,000 miles later (30,000 of those miles off road) i still love it. I hope the 5th gen 4unner stays in production for another 10 years so I can buy a brand new one when mine fails.

      We just bought a 2022 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD. Of course, for family.
      We reserved a 2022 RAV4 XSE for my wife and I to boogy around in. When it arrived off the truck from the Canada factory , the front struts (shocks) were scratched, dented, and rusted. The small accent window in the driver door was leaking air and made a terribly loud whistle. The black roofline paint was dripped into the door jam - white paint.
      So…we think if we don’t get it (dealer is fixing everything)…we will either get the 4r (we love them) or a v6 highlander XLE AWD (26 miles per gallon) and put a rough country 2” lift kit on it with some bf good rich ko2 tires.

    Just eyeballing some stats, but some big advantages the 4runner has in general is a huge approach angle (33 degrees) and the ground clearance over 9 inches (which is mentioned in the video). We are shopping for an Ascent and the approach angle is often lauded as one of it's good features, but it's 17.6 degrees (same as the rest of it's competition). 4runner was a vehicle we considered, but MPG rating is low to the point we are passing and likely going with the Ascent. Still, 4runner seems like a good option if you need actual offroad performance. We'll mostly be using the Ascent for forest service roads (but we'll try to swap for 18" instead of standard 20" wheels).

    I bought a 22 4Runner Limited. I'll add one thing to your comment on the display. The 22 Limited now has side and forward cameras that the 21 did not. The new cameras seem to be a better resolution than the rear camera. I wish they were all the newer cameras. The rear cross-traffic and pedestrian assist systems work. The lane departure system is a warning-only system. It doesn't correct you back into the lane. The forward braking assist works well. I've had a couple people cut close in front of me and a deer run in front of me. The vehicle applied the brakes automatically. I have the same tire/wheel package as your test vehicle. I'm pleased with its on and off-road performance. I've had it off in the snow until it was dragging the belly and only once had to switch it to full 4 wheel drive. The Limited has full-time all-wheel drive with the ability to switch to 4 -wheel high and low. I go off on some unmaintained roads and such to take wildlife pictures. I don't see myself rock climbing or Overlanding. I would have gone with one of the offroad versions if I had plans for that.

    I don't understand why Toyota kept the 5 speed auto in 4runner, even 1st generation Tundra they swapped 4 speed to the 5 speed within 5 years. I'm curious what current Tacoma would be like with the 10 speed auto from the Tundra. The 1st gen Tundra transmission was same as the Tacoma, and why it like to blow up with the v8 torque (I went through 3 under warranty on my old 2002).

    • @gabevillarreal96
      @gabevillarreal96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree! Other than bulletproof reliability of the 5 speed,it needs an updated transmission so that the ratios aren't so spread apart. But let's be real.... the entire vehicle needs a massive update/ redesign. Since they are holding out on that new model,they kept things ultra reliable and archaic. People who buy 4runners truly don't care about that stuff. Off road worthy reliable as anything ever made, and resale value SECOND TO NONE! ✅️✅️✅️

    Toyota was supposed to release an all-new 4Runner in 2023, but for the first time in the company's history, they're going to miss a deadline - probably due to the pandemic and chip shortage. Rumor has it that the next gen 4Runner will have a turbo 4-cylinder, but I think Toyota would be wise to offer a version with the Hybrid V6 powertrain from the new Tundra. I currently drive a 2004 4Runner Sport that has Toyota's awesome and legendary 4.7-liter V8. It still runs and looks great - but I'm ready for updated technology.

      Yes. The first gen kia had issues with the damper bolts(revised bolts came later) and that was the 3.5 mitsubishi designed hyundai made engine. And as for remarks well it was a joke. Oh and I have 2 sorentos a 2003 and a 2005. And just in case the 03 uses the 4 speed made by aisin. And the 05? Yep the 5sp thats in the super duper 2022 4R. Still body on frame still capable. But down to it it was a joke. As for resell. 🙄 I got both of mine cheap thanks to the horrible resell. Resell is great if you buy new. But if you buy used then bad resell helps me buy 1 for 1200 and the other for 1650. So smart guy no monthly payments amd I fix them my self. Have a good day 😘

    Your turbo charged engine will be lucky to make 250k miles. Turbochargered engines are stressed and will break earlier and more frequently than a non-turbocharged one. 4Runner will do that without breaking a sweat. If you want an SUV that's going last 10+ years you buy a 4Runner. If you're just wanting the newest technology and will trade in 3-5 years a Bronco is fine.
    I keep cars over a decade. After owning a Dodge Aries as a college student, a Ford Explorer as an entry-level worker, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee I've decided I'd rather have reliable and long-lasting over the extra rev and speed. Less shop visits are a huge plus too.

    • @davidfence6939
      @davidfence6939 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd only consider the Bronco and Wrangler as direct competition. Wrangler is a niche, non-family vehicle with a lot less storage. As stated on Bronco more tech and newer engine means more to fix for me. Plus if you're an off-road enthusiast you'll be buying a 4Runner and modifying it. 4Runner fans modifying even the TRD Pro.
      The Blazer is a joke of its former self. The Passport just isn't an off-road vehicle to me. Very reliable though.

    Toyota trucks are amazingly reliable. My 05 Tundra ran up to 200K without too many issues. That said, after 14 years I wanted something fun. Bought a Wrangler and then traded it in for a Bronco BB Sasquatch (like you guys 😅) I love it thus far.

    Knock the 4runner as much as you will, but she's a vehicle that can take on pretty much anything you throw at it and still outlast anything on the road, plus still hang on to an incredible resale value. I've had two 4runners and never been disappointed in them, my current one is a 2016 trail edition with KDSS and I just love it. But what I love even more, she's built in Japan along side the land cruiser and Lexus, not bad for a forty year old girl.

    I have also have a 2022 TRD Sport and I put a 1.5" lift on it with TRD Pro wheels. It rides fantastic and still does great off road. In fact, I challenged my buddy in a TRD Pro through a giant mud pit, A-Trac vs. Rear Locker. He got stuck and I made it through. A-Trac is so much better than diff lock at low speeds. XREAS is a huge bonus which eliminates the body roll and nose diving which 4 Runners are notorious for. I love my TRD Sport and think it's the overall best trim package for the $$ out there.

    The bling that will come with the updated 4R will be largely nonsense that raises the price but does not affect functionality much. Older folks like me will be there to buy up the dinosaurs. I have a '22 RX450H which is an awesome vehicle but I spend way too much time looking at the monitor. Toyota/Lexus are slow to change but that is usually a good thing.

    I'm not really seeing the technology in the technology package. The 4Runner always has been a handsome vehicle to me. The infotainment system and center stack have an unwanted Atari feel to them. I have no doubt it will run forever and be trustworthy but it's as bland as can be. Why is the power so low compared to the competition? Why so many comparisons to the Bronco instead of the Explorer? I would think the Explorer would be more of a natural competitor. Maybe now that they've updated the Tundra & Sequoia they'll focus on updating the 4Runner. My takeaway from this video is that I need to go out and search for that ice cream.
