That outback screen would be a deal breaker. I want physical buttons and ease of use to get to things quickly like air, seat warmers, etc. I don’t wanna finagle around so many menus for one simple job

I love my new 2020 forester sport. feels so good to drive.
We purchased a 2019 Forester Premium for my wife in July 19, and have done 12,000 miles and we are very pleased with it. Only 2 minus points: 1/ When you floor the throttle, the engine is noisy thanks to the CVT ‘gearbox.’ 2/ There is a fair amount of road noise due to the large door mirrors. Otherwise, it is plusses all the way: Amazing ride and brakes, very comfortable seats; Subaru makes cloth seats with heaters, which we prefer to leather, not many manufacturers do this. You can really see out the car so well, there is space galore, the rear seats recline, the body is galvanized, and the CVT although noisy, gives really good mpg. We get 27 around town on average and 32 on a run, good for a 3,500lb SUV. We like the Outback and rented one with the standard engine, but it is gutless to me, it weighs 300 lbs more than the Forester and it shows. IMHO, you need the turbo if you go for the Outback, but if you use the ‘sport’ button, it ‘lowers the gearing’ and works really well, for joining the freeway or engine braking when needed. We use the sport button a lot.
Like all cars today, the infotainment is far too complicated, but at least Subaru give you knobs and buttons for heating!
The safety features are appreciated, but you can turn them off if you wish and reduce the noise level of the warning signals.
The Forester is built like a Sherman Tank and will I think go on forever and hold its price accordingly. I wish it was built in the USA and not Japan, but there you go….

Just bought a 2020 forester limited ...way different than my 2014 forester ..more room more horse power ..love it as usual. The new outbacks r bigger now too and have an 11 inch screen ..very nice and so is the price
Love my 2018 Outback 3.6R Premier. The 6H 3.6l n/a 250hp/250tq is a great motor. I understand why they went with the turbo for fuel economy in newer models, but man the 6 is a strong engine. Plus no start/stop crap.

I drove both and passed on the Outback because I felt the turbo did not deliver a smooth power delivery when driving around town and did not think the soft ride was for me. Even though the Forester was not as powerful, it accelerated briskly and I also really enjoy how nimble it felt to drive. I also preferred the control center in the Forester. Wished the Forester was as quiet as the Outback, but still good, especially compared to the older models.

The reason I picked the Forester: it's made in Japan.
Yet historically the models that subaru has made in Japan have been less reliable. Wrx, impreza and forester have all had big issues with fuel systems, electronics, transmissions. Outback and crosstrek are the most reliable and the ascent just needs some love for them to get right.
I just wish that Subaru would please give us a turbo for the Forester again. I would buy it for sure. They put us in a funny place to choose between these two.

K has a family of five, I'm 6’5 my bro is 6’4 and my oldest bro is 6’6 plus my dad is 6,5 and my mom's 5’9. We all fight in the outback better because of the length. Head high does not matter it's all legroom. I prefer the outback way more.

I've seen a number of comparisons between these two. Your comments are fairly common. I've looked at both of these cars for a while now and while the Forester is rated with a larger interior volume between the two, that comes because of the added height of the vehicle. So, if you intend to haul around a lot of tall objects in the back, then the Forester might be the one for you. On the other hand, as you pointed out, the Outback it longer and wider so it has significantly more load floor in the back which gives more room for loading stuff. It's been my observation that most people never use the area inside the car that's above the lower edge of the windows so from that perspective, the Outback is going to have much more "usable" space than the Forester will. Most of the other things you gave the Forester the nod on are pretty much just personal preference. If the Outback had been equipped with the non-turbo engine, performance would have been a lot closer, as would fuel economy but as it is, with nothing against the Forester (I'm driving a Rav4 right now) I'd go with the Outback either way.

I've owed three Subies, a 5 speed 2.2L Impreza Outback Sport, a 2.5L Outback Legacy Wagon and, currently, a CVT Forester 2.0L XT. By far, my 2014 Forester XT is my favorite of the three. It's a shame Subaru didn't offer a turbo option for the 2019 and 2020 Foresters in the US market, otherwise, I'd go for the 2020 Forester Sport. Subaru's boxer engine with a turbo has become a "must have" for me!
I have the Forester and really like it. Now after owning one for the past five years, I would buy the Outback for one reason. When you told down the rear seats, length is much better. For example, I'm into car camping, so unless you're 5'8" or under the Forester is for you. But I'm 6'2" and I don't fit. My next car is the outback because there is greater length to sleep in the rear.

I have a 2015 Forester for purposes o comparison. I very recently test drove both a a 2020 Forester and a 2020 Outback. I preferred the ride of the Outback much more than my current Forester and the new one. I placed an order for the Outback Touring XT. I really liked the performance of the turbo.
Yes that turbo engine in the Outback makes a huge difference. Too bad Subaru doesn't offer it in the Forester.
I can't decide. I like the look of both. I will be test driving them this weekend.
I am thinking the forester for camping and road trips with my dog. But then again the onyxt would be good for road trips with that extra power.

Sadly the Outback is not sold with the turbo engine in NZ so unless you want the big 3.0 all the engines are naturally aspirated 2.5 for both models.
I wish Outback is longer!!! Good for long road trips and space to sleep in!!!

An excellent review. A couple of things he didn’t mention that are making me lean towards an outback. First, the outback has a longer wheel base which gives it a better ride quality. Second, the forester is a much taller vehicle which is great if you are well over 6 feet, but for an average height guy like me, it’s an excessive amount of headroom. The disadvantage is if you plan on using the roof rack for anything such as skis, bikes, kayaks, or cargo pod. The extra vehicle height makes loading onto the roof a challenge without a step ladder.
But the roof rack on the Forester is much better than the set-up on the Outback. The Outback used to be the "go to" vehicle for sea kayakers but when they went to the inferior roof rack a few years back with the folding cross rails and fixed spread, paddlers moved to the Forester. I bought Yakima Aero bars for my 2019 Forester and have a 48" spread between the rails, more than nearly all compact, mid-size and even some large SUVs. Even my 2004 4Runner only had a 39" maximum spread with the factory rood rack and bars. This is a much more secure set-up for our 17' - 18' sea kayaks, even for m 5'7" height. We also do a great deal of car camping and we find the greater insight height of the Forester beneficial since we can sit-up and read or whatever which we could not do in the lower roof height Outback. Of course my wife and I are short and do not need the extra inside length of the Outback for sleeping (although with the front seat all the way moved forward we have 6' of length. We also appreciate the greater approach, break over and departure angles of the Forester for the mild off-roading we do. I also did not like the infotainment system in the new Outback due to the fact that so many features are tied to this system. I much prefer Foresters' separate switches for seat heaters, X-Mode, and the (damned) auto stop-start "feature".
A case can be made for either vehicle depending on your specific requirements.

I bought my wife 2019 Forrester sport,and I ended trading in my 2019 Crosstrek in for a 2020 Outback Onyx xt,I love my out back, but got some reason, The Forrester seems to drive more consistently smooth,and the Forrester sears have much better feel and lumbar support? I really thought they would’ve identicle?

Im 6’3 and chose 2020 onyx outback. the forrester has better headroom but it isnt an issue for me on my outback. I agree with everything he is saying except center console infotainment. I choose the outback for the speed power and clean look of the infotainment. I didnt like the two screen display on the forrester. Also with a toddler, being able to clean the seats more important for me.

Just my opinion, but I think Forester would be the clear winner if it had the turbo. And I have a feeling Subaru will offer it that way next year.

It would, as an option, but yes, like all those people harping about the Toyota Camry TRD should have more power. It will add a lot of extra cost, and reduce reliability and longevity. I think the standard engine has way enough power for this vehicle. But keep in in mind, the Bo er engines were k own to blow head gaskets, but, depends with vehicle and engine. Lately, most ha e not had many problems, but when you go to the higher horsepower forces induction turbos, especially like the WRX STi, and for those that mod it, and I crease boost, it's goi g to give out a lot sooner than normal. So like the normally aspirated engines, like on the Hinda Civic Sport Sedan/Coupe, Toyota Corolla, and Camrys with I4 and V6 engines, they are going to last a lot lo get than the turbo ones, especially if you don't baby the car
The depressing part is that they used to have that in previous model years, but it's been discontinued because it was just too low sales volume for Forester. More people who wanted the extra power with the space of a Forester were just buying the Outback instead (which at that time had a 6cyl Boxer rather than a turbo-4)
Had an 09 Forester XT turbo. Had tons of power BUT required premium fuel which is at least a dollar more per gal. If you’re on a fixed income that extra cost adds up. I do not like what I read about the CVT though so for now I’ll stay away from Subaru.
They're going to wait until the sale of OUtback XT's slows down, and then probably switch which one offers the turbo

Yea not sure if there are plans to add that turbo engine option...if they do the price will probably be close to the outback's current pricing.
Last year people were thinking they would offer a turbo in the 2020...didn't happen.
The Forester's windows/view outside is unrivaled. The difference between "sitting ON the car" and "sitting in the car".
Bought the Abyss Blue Pear, Outback Onyx XT. Clear winner in my mind with ride, style and engine.
Larry, do you turn off the stop/start ? If no, do you find it to be really smooth and not clunky when you start off? If you DO turn it off, is it true that it's a multi-step process to turn it off and you have to do all that with the large touchscreen?
Ofc Bob my wife likes to leave it on when she drives. I’m about 50/50. It’s not always real smooth when starting back up. Engine is smooth but it’s sometimes jerky.
Ofc Bob yes with touchscreen. Three touches to turn off.

Ever check your real world gas mileage? And is your XT the turbo model?
The outback is a lifted wagon and it definitely has more legroom if u adjust the seats.
I wish the back seats of the forester could recline a back a lil bit.

Get both. Lol The Outback with the turbo engine is great, since they brought it back, if you want to deal with the extra maintenance and TLC, but I would go with the Forester Sport if I got an SUV, even though a 4Runner, Highlander, Passport, or Pilot are viable options.
I rented a base Forester for 2 days, and hardly got to drive it, because I picked it up before a 12 hour work shift, and got it to use to move houses the second day, but even with the base model, I loved it. I just would prefer if it had the optional alloy wheels, but if I could get the loaded Sport in black, that would be great. I still gotta watch your Forester Sport Review video, which I think I will do now, though I have seen a few, and it was a much better improvement over the new Crosstrek. It was easy to drive, visibility good, and felt big enough to be safe a secure, but still very maneuverable.

Great comparison. If Subaru would get their act together and offer a turbo Forester again I'd be all over it. It seems many potential customers would. Why offer it in the Outback but not the Forester? Mazda and Ford are both offering upgraded turbo engines for their compact SUVs. Toyota has the more powerful hybrid. Looks like Subaru is content being left behind. Sad!
I get why many want the turbo to return to the lineup for the Forester. Although a decision had to be made by not including the turbo because they only had approximately 5% of sales from the previous generation Forester. If you are the CEO and continue with the turbo with only 5% sales? You'd probably not last long as the CEO. Everyone had the chance to buy the turbo. 5% is way too low for sales to continue producing.
From what I heard, when did offer the turbo in the Forester only 5% of the buyers opted for it, so I understand why Subaru is reluctant to go down that road again. Perhaps it was because the Forester XT had to use premium, I don't know, but bottom line is they sold very few of the Forester turbos.
Outback quieter otherwise same for me - I owned 7 Outbacks so I am biased.
Do you need that many? I thought 1 would be enough, its not a jeep.
I have a 2017 outback and a "11 legacy. Only reasons i would not get the forester is the higher roof line is actually a more waste of space because then it becomes a hazard when your windows are blocked and the forester only has 1 engine. I like my outback 2.5i but honestly i would have gotten the 3.6r if i was to get one because my legacy 3.6r gets 30mpg on the highway and i cant even get that in my outback. I only get like 29mpg at most in the outback. I rather have the extra 30% more power at a 10% reduction in economy.
I really hope the forester gets the 2.4 NA motor the BRZ is getting in 2022
Bought a Forrester sport today, black one too. I like the outback xp but price is too high and most importantly this is suv not a sport car I don't want turbo. More reliable and better gas mileage is my preference. I also don't like the long body of the outback it reminded me of a van, both great vehicle but I like the Forrester better. The only thing I like the outback over the Forester is the infortainment system, the outback big tesla screen and is so much better and more in depth.

Neither. My new Subaru was a lemon, Subaru kept promising to fully refund my $, but they turned their back on me. Car was in shop 12+ times, 42 days total, plus many trips where I waited. 2.5 years of nothing but promises and problems. Car was never fixed, Subaru refused to even try to fix it at the end, they didn't know how to fix it, and didn't want to put any more money in it.
When showing a person in the car please include their height and weight , so it's easier to judge how much room there is and is the front seat pushed all the way back or pulled close to the steering wheel.

Question... can you use xmode on the outback in snow mode if your driving in the rain and at highway speeds?
I have a 2017 outback and the x mode shuts off after 20 or 40 kms (I can't remember) - it is more for slower speeds (gets me out of jams;). The outback handles incredible in the snow, ice and rain without being in x mode. My two previous vehicles were Rav 4s and I thought they handled the snow and rain well - once in my subbie - I won't go back! Proper tires are effective and I have never felt safer driving any other vehicle.

I'm new to towing..but have had a number of Subaru..why is it a sedan can tow but an SUV can't. Confused..I would think an SUV could. My son's jeep can't either..saying 1500# isn't enough to do much of anything.

I'm doubting the accuracy of the statement that the Forester has more rear leg room than the Outback. The OB is 8 inches longer than the Forester and the specifications for rear leg room show the OB having more...
Forester/Outback Front Leg Room 43.3"/42.8 " , Forester/Outback Rear Leg Room 39.4"/39.5". Both are very close but due to my sitting position up front, I had more rear leg room in the Forester. Keep in mind most people do not sit all the way back on the front seats.
have a 2000 Forester and i would not own either again .. oil leaking all over my driveway due to gasket leaks and was told it would cost a few thousand to fix ... this is my last subaru ...
Yeah. The car is 20 years old. Your expectations are too high. Most all cars need new gaskets by that age. Spend the money to change the gaskets or get a newer car.
I had the 2015 forester xt and just switched to 2020 outback xt. I liked the forester look. didn't want an outback but got the outback anyway. the interior and ride are WAY better than forester, and as luxury as some luxury brands. I really love the outback now over forester.

No v6 in Subaru. Only H6. The new one comes with a turbo 4 cylinder boxer engine for a higher trim. No 6 cylinders for new outback.
The front passengers in the Forester will feel like they’re riding on a skateboard.

Tell you in a week or two. I had a 2015 Forester and now I'm in the 2019 Forester Sport. Just put 1300 on the vehicle. Owned it a week and change.

@@johnnyj.817 Oil burning yes. Not that I drove her easy. I'm at 7K elevation. My trips down the hill would be 300 mile rounders in 24 hours in stop and go traffic, and hauling butt through OC LA County and uphill again.

I really like the Forester design overall, but the recent recalls, my friend telling me about the head gasket issue, and oil burning issue has me concerned. do all modern cars burn oil like a Subaru?
@@johnnyj.817 cant say for new cars but at 1500 theres been zero oil burn. Still so so early but that's encouraging. I did have to add some water until I get to the Subaru dealership for some Subaru brand coolant.
I bought a new 2017 Outback, had RAB and other electrical problems from the start. Dealer (mid Michigan) does not give paperwork to you when you have a problem during the first year "no paperwork, no way to prove Lemon Law " Problems continued, and got much worse. Car towed into 2 different dealers no less than 4 times. Dealer I purchased from, same that does not give paperwork, did nothing to fix the car, just deleted all the computer information, thus deleting evidence . Other deal did try but could not fix the problems. Car would shut down to safety mode, not go over 10 mph. after 2 years, and 10 times in for repair, still not fixed. District service manager talked to me, said to contact Subaru, get all my money back. Long story short, Subaru does not stand behind their cars, I did not get my money back as I should have. Ended up losing $14,000 when I traded it in. My experience, Subaru is not a honorable company. The dealer I bought from is down right fraudulent.

in 2013 i was driving a 99 legacy wagon with a slipping transmission having problems finding D sometimes, I looked at a 2013 impreza and my legacy had a better feel
i ultimately went with 2008 2.5i such a better feeling car i'm still driving it.
