    So a higher trim Forrester would lose to the base Subaru then? If it comes down to price at the end

    are subarus easy to keep and DIYs like Hondas?

    • @reconeix
      @reconeix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. Subarus have historically been amenable to DIY upkeep. But with the new CVT, that's debatable now. Where I live in Northern California, there new a lot of older Subarus on the road. How the new CVT transmission will hold up is a mystery.

    If you had given the Forester the more comparably priced add-on package, the vehicles would be about the same price. The Forester would then also have a power tailgate and blind spot monitor like the Outback, and an upgraded 8" touchscreen infotainment system with a 576W Harman Kardon speaker system. Also, you need to include the Forester's X-mode feature, which makes it more off-road capable.
    To me, the Forester is the much better value. I also would have given the Forester the half- point for the climate controls. Not everything needs to be included in one big touchscreen, it's easier to change climate controls on the fly when there's physical buttons and knobs.

    Pretty good review . I just bought a 2020 Forester sport with option pkg 24 . Which has the signals for traffic coming up etc.. power rear gate . But the biggest reason i went with Forester is something i didnt hear you mention . The double XX mode is a HUGE game changer . There are other reviews on youtube that show just what that is all about especially if you drive in snow . Where other vehicles got stuck or put on chains the forester was able to make it . That my friends is a over the top deal breaker worth many points.

    Forested gets more bang for the buck. Panoramic roof is very nice. More room in the Forester. Only thing I like better wuth the outback, is longer wheelbase, which gives,a better ride. Forester Premium with 15 package is the best way to go.

    Good video, test driving both vehicles I chose Forester for it's comparable interior space and shorter exterior length. Around 14" shorter makes Forester easier to park between cars on the road side in urban areas.

  • @Slappywag69
    @Slappywag69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Just got a chance to drive both. I’m leaning towards the outback, but not by much and will probably have a better look at the forester before deciding if it comes down to those two. Biggest “knock” on the outback was that infotainment system. Sure, it’s “cool” and you kind of feel like you’re piloting the USS Enterprise, but so much is accessed through that one system (so I assume you can never put in an aftermarket system without losing a lot of functionality). Plus, some things like controlling heated seats and safety features would easier with a few buttons.

    Outback is an off road capable small station wagon. It is better for city people and driving for folks that might find themselves driving dirt roads or camp roads on ocassion. Forester is a small off road SUV that you can drive in town. The more and harder you drive off road the more appealing and functional the Forester is. The more you drive in town and on pavement the more appealing the Outback will be. I would say looks and where the vehicle will be driven most often are the two choice factors.

    Good job, guys, although there's nothing really surprising. The one thing I'd like to comment on is interior volume. It's true, the Forester comes out slightly more than the Outback in that department. That always surprised me a little as I would have thought the Outback would have had the edge but I've looked at both these cars for quite a while now and the difference is in configuration. The Forester is a little taller while the Outback is a little longer from the back of the front seats to the tailgate. The measurements give the Forester the edge in total volume but I've done some measuring and the Outback actually has more floor space than the Forester and that, for me, gives it the nod. Most folks rarely use the space in the cargo area that's above the window line. So in my opinion, the Outback has more "usable" space.

    • @mpetrides

      I have a 2019 Forester Sport. When I looked at the 2020 Outback Onyx XT (because of the available turbo option), I found I really didn't like the lower roof in the cargo area. I prefer being able to crouch almost upright (OK, I AM pretty short) in the back, particularly if I'm considering camping in the back. I've heard others (taller than I am) who are looking at the two for the same use and who prefer the length of the Outback to the height of the Forester. So this one is basically a matter of personal preference.

    • @reconeix
      @reconeix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      As someone that would be camping in the interior from time to time, the extra length of the Outback wins.

    • @eskil1u
      @eskil1u 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, i might go with the outback due to its length so I can lie down in it for camping

    • @Intrepid175a
      @Intrepid175a 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mpetrides - understood! I'm 6'2" so obviously "length" is going to mean something to me. ;-)
      I've also got other interests and hobbies for which the added length behind the front seats would be a big advantage. I'm currently driving a Toyota Rav4 which is very similar to the Forester in configuration. It has worked well for me though the years but it has been a little cramped from time to time.

    I have the 2019 Forester Sport. It's my first Subaru and I love it. Just wish it had more towing capacity. Sure, the Outback has more towing capacity, but the wagon look was just not my style. The Forester is such a great vehicle and I love my large moon roof.

    • @fubartotale3389
      @fubartotale3389 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, we have two Foresters and an Outback, but if towing was a priority, why didn't you go with the Outback? I think my 2018 Outback is much more handsome than our 2018 Forester, and the interior is hands down better.
      A matter of taste, if course.

  • @kjwilsle2943
    @kjwilsle2943 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    We have both , a 2018 Forester we bought new. And a 2015 Outback we recently bought as a 2nd car used. I am petite and short , When driving he Forester seems to feel like I am sitting up higher in the seat. I like the size of the Forested better as far as the seats fit my body better and sit me height wise to the steering wheel better. I like the forester size better around town it feels less big to me. the outback feels too big for my body size and just feels bigger driving in lanes , my body feels too small and short for the sests. For someone taller and someone larger, the outback is a lot nicer for space when sitting in the seat it feels roomier. the outback seems to ride smoother like a luxury car. We just got the outback and I hit my head really bad on the door frame getting in because I'm used to getting in the forester. I really like driving the forester much better. But for a family car for long vacation and trips the outback would be my preference for how it rides and how much more w width of feels when sitting in the seats. Definitely the outback is a great family car. And would be awesome for family travel. the Forested looses some arm room, space while sitting in the seat. overall I love the forester better especially if I'm driving. I love the outback for smooth luxury ride, more roomy width wise in the seat, a little longer for cargo in the back. A taller person who likes larger cars would probably prefer the outback. the dealer at Subaru explained that the fort has a little more height in the ceiling, he said not much difference in size between the two, except outback is a little longer. He said the difference I notice sitting in the seats between the two is all in how the manufacturer has angled the seat down into the vehicle. Hope that helps anyone considering. I've never thought I would love a car. But I love my forester! and I am a loyal Subaru lover now tool

  • @glurnheim
    @glurnheim 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    I've had both, and I agree. What isn't mentioned in this review is that the Forester is a bit more capable off road. Better approach angles despite the same overall height. To be fair, I think the Outback is a slightly better highway
    cruiser. You can tell the difference on a windy day.

    NICE JOB with this video ! I just went through this comparison personally between the FORESTER TOURING and OUTBACK TOURING. There were 4 deciding factors for me. 1. PANORAMIC MOONROOF on the FORESTER is a wonderful feature vs the small sunroof in the OUTBACK. 2. After 2 different test drives, I still found the large touch screen in the OUTBACK to be awkward to operate while driving. There were layers of screens to go through for simple tasks. You touch the screen and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't... Talk about a distraction.... I'll take old fashion knobs and switches any day. 3. FORESTER is just shy of 9 inches shorter than the OUTBACK and yet, more cargo space and just about equal front and rear leg room. That combined with the tight turning radius, FORESTER was the clear winner. 4. PRICE: Both TOURING models, with the same options, the OUTBACK is almost $3,000 MORE. For me personally.. .the FORESTER is the better deal. My 2020 Forester is currently on order. (JASPER GREEN with BROWN LEATHER INTERIOR) Can't wait for it to arrive.

    For me, I purchased the Forester rather than the Outback mainly because it has a better roof rack system - by far . I can't understand why the Outback uses the clunky system. Forester has better versatility and load carrying capacity. In fact the capacity is one of the best for any vehicle and, for instance can easily carry a 150 lb + roof tent system. The Outback rack is ugly, the crossbars are flimsy and in fixed position - I just don't get it. I agree that the Outback is a little bit prettier.
    I was also very pleasantly surprised what a great vehicle the 2019 Forester is for long distance cruising during my 7000 mi trip. It is quiet, smooth, solid and handles very well everywhere including fast freeway and high altitude sporty driving
    Whoever has rated it as not having enough power is wrong, in my opinion. The luggage area is tall enough for several bikes inside, with an inside fork attaching bar.
    While Subaru builds great cars, I feel that the dealer experience is rather poor. Dishonest salesman, attempted up-selling of unnecessary services and a bit of arrogance.
    Why does routine service cost three times more (!) per year than on my 2017 VW GTI, or twice as much as my previous SUV, the 2011 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?

    • @fubartotale3389
      @fubartotale3389 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The forester sport is better than the touring trim level or the outback because the touring trim levels are expensive and some interiors don’t look good looking. Also the forester has more headroom than the outback. So for my money I’ll take the forester sport over the touring trim level or the outback because it’s cheap and it’s interior is well looking with a standard orange accent color interior and those cloth seats which are more comfortable than leather seats and the forester comes standard with a panoramic sunroof which the outback doesn’t and it’s an option whether if you want a sunroof in an outback. Also the forester sport has more exterior design than the outback or the forester touring trim level. So I’ll take the forester sport.

Just with the audio comparison, if you could play the same music track it would help give a better indication and I don't recall if they both have full sized alloy spares or not. My main question is to do with interior ride height. The Outback looks much lower, but is that more pronounced because of the higher roofline of the Forester? AND engine/driving impressions which you also looked at)... especially if what's presented is meant for potential buyers with their eyes on what they could afford. An alternate comparison involving the Outback's lowest XT trim (Onyx) would "let in" the turbo engine and thereby factor in any additional points gained in engine/driving impressions for a turbo Outback -- but also gain substantial additional points for the Forester in terms of much lower pricing and better mileage. Anyway... that's my 2 cents. ☺️

    I just least a 2020 outback, and love it so far, I traded in my 2017 Subaru Forester and I hope I made a good choice. I was getting in my Forester 25 City and about 34 highway.. I'm getting 25 City and highway put together on my outback.

    I had a 2014 Legacy I bought in 2015. And I drove it 225,000 miles. But I always wanted an outback. So I decided to purchase one. I went down to the dealer I drove a few around. And they ended up coming home with a forester. It just fit me better. I liked the seating. And I wasn’t crazy about the computer screen controlling everything in the outback. I don’t wanna be touching and fondling stuff when I’m driving. I can’t say anything bad about the outback. It’s just that the Forrester seem to have caught up over the years, and maybe even surpassed it in ergonomics.

    Subaru should glue 2 2.5liter engines and make a 5 liter 8 cilinder turbo 600 hp sti version of all their models...as an option...and MANUAL gearbox.

    This video and your video comparing it to the crosstrek is starting to sell me on the forester.... I wanted to go for the crosstrek because it came in a manual, but aside from the transmission the forester seems to have everything else I really want. If the forester came in a manual, there probably wouldn't've been any decision for me, unfortunately they're just not making them anymore :(

  • @nope1918
    @nope1918 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wouldn't have given the forester half a point for larger rims. More rim means less tire, which means the whole wheel is heavier and doesn't provide as much cushion. Which is fine on a sports car but let's be honest, the forester "sport" is not that.
    It looks cool but it's less functional. I'd have called it a draw.
