Little tip: Backstabbing is one of the most useful tools in DS1. Since a lot of enemies will have their shield up slowly guarding, you can just strafe behind them and get a backstab in
The cool thing about that guy who gave you your healing juice and died is that in pre-release versions of the game he actually survived. He would have been your friend and your rival, meeting with and giving you advice at several points as you both try to live out the destiny of the Chosen Undead. But he gets jealous, seeing you progress when it was HIS family that knew the legends of the undead, and even though he freed you to fufill the prophecy he thinks that HE could also be the Chosen one. So you would fight him to death before or after the final boss, kinda like Gideon the All Knowing. Anyways, his questline got scrapped and instead he gets SLAM DUNKED through the roof by the first boss, which jumps down to fight you after. You saw it up there before retrying the fight. That's why he dies in a bricked off room with the sun shining on his face, and you can only get in there by triggering the boulder to smash through the wall.
@@davobandsI love Bloodborne, but the original Souls need some love. Going back to old movement is a trip and a half, making it almost slow enough to feel like a strategy game compared to the brutal speed and combos of all the modern SoulsBorne games.
YESSIR. I've been watching you since the elden ring trailer reaction and I was hoping youd play the other games. Just replayed this classic with a friend for the second time last month. The first time I played this was in 2012 when I was still a kid. Instantly became my favorite game, until I played bloodborne (to this day that's my favorite so I hope you might play it one day too). Both these games and elden ring make my top 3 games of all time, so I hope you're having fun on your first playthrough like many of us had. It's a dreamlike experience
I'm so glad you're playing Dark Souls 1. It's got to be a hell of a transition going from Elden Ring to DS1, but once you acclimate to the clunkiness it's peak!
@@davobands glad you're liking it! This first vid is already one of my favorite DS playthrus i've ever seen. Controls are worse, but you can feel the bones of elden ring here, it's pretty remarkable how strong they were right out of the gate
Not sure if anyone has said anything but patience is a must for the game, getting fed up and running past things is how you end up with the death at 54:00 , Take it slow and learn the moves. Once you're comfortable with enemy moves then you could run past things but doing so early on will only lead to lost souls and sanity. (edit) Also plunging attacks are something very useful, in fact both the asylum and taurus demon we spots to practice that but hey you got through it our own way so good on ya.
Tip for Leveling up: The stats in DS1 are kinda whack. Like Elden Ring they have diminishing returns, giving you less and less each time you level up, but way harsher than Elden Ring. The "soft cap" is where it starts losing effectiveness and the "hard cap" is where the gains are basically nothing. Vitality: Increases HP: Soft: 30 Hard: 50 Attunement: Increases the amount of spells you can hold: Hard: 50 Endurance: Increases stamina, equip load and bleed resist. Hard: 40 Strength: Increases damage of strength weapons. Dexterity: Increases damage of dex weapons and slightly increases spell casting speed: Soft: 35 Hard: 45 Resistance: Increases resistance to status effects like poison, curse and toxin. Least useful stat since your Vitality and total Level also increase your status effect resistance. Hard: 50 Intelligence: Increases magic scaling weapons and spells Faith: Increases holy scaling weapons and mircales Humanity: Can't be leveled up, but can be increased by finding humanity items. It increases your item drop chance, and is a resource you can spend to reverse hollowing (turn human, some curses are weaker against humans, and lets other players assist or invade you. Humanity can also be used to upgrade bonfires, which give you more Estus flask charges when you rest at that specific bonfire.) Hard: 30
Hard cap does not mean "the gains are basically nothing"; it means the gains are literally nothing, so Attunement is the only stat with an absolute hard cap less than 99 (as such, max level challenges should ideally pause at 50 and not start leveling Attunement until Resistance is at 99 😂). Soft caps are the points at which diminishing returns set in, so 30 and 50 for Vitality are both soft caps. Anyway, for Endurance, only stamina is hard-capped at 40; equip load is capped at 99. Strength and Dex should be soft caps 20 and 40, hard 99 (but really no reason to level them past 40 for pure melee unless you are going for a very high level or want to one-hand a gigantic weapon or shield). And Dex also affects casting speed with a hard cap at 45. Int and Faith have their final soft caps at 50. 😅
@@Eyedunno very good clarification. Soft caps and hard caps are not hard and fast, it's just the usual levels where people start to consider the stat "good enough" before they start focusing on a specific build.
@@reyrapids63 @reyrapids63 You literally just used the expression "hard and fast" which kind of establishes what "hard" means--strict and final. If increasing that stat still does something, even a little that won't necessarily make your character any more viable in practice, you're not at the hard cap yet. Soft caps are the points where you have a sharp dropoff in marginal returns, but those returns aren't yet zero. I'm not suggesting you level Vitality past 50 in DS1, but if you do, you can still get up to 400 additional HP for doing it, so obviously it's not completely pointless, just less effective for improving most builds than leveling a stat that's not softcapped would be.
The “secret door” in the undead asylum boss room is there for a reason. It teaches the player that if you get stuck on a boss/area, you can always leave and explore other places and then return when you’re ready.
Pro Tip: DS1 does not have nearly as many chain attack combos as Elden Ring. Light attacks and Heavy attacks are mostly just 1 hit attacks. Meaning your R1 is good for a quick weaker hit on fast enemies, and the Heavy attack is what you need to actual damage. Focus on learning the timing of enemy attacks and take advantage of breaks to unleash a heavy attack.
Some mechanics for you to know about. Dark Souls 1 has fewer bonfires, but you can use humanity in your inventory to boost a bonfire and get more flasks from said bonfire, and there's quite a few considerable shortcuts to look out for. Not retaining a shortcut can be quite detrimental in runback. As a result you're often going to benefit the most going through areas more slow and methodically your first couple times. While it could make the game feel slower, you're also figuring out where things lead to. Using Humanity at bonfires to boost them, you will also restore your own to do so. Mind you that Humanity can be sometimes scarce, so use them wisely, but often bosses may give them and a "level" can drop up to a certain amount from regular enemies. Dying with humanity not used there's also a chance to recover within the level somewhere. Lastly I must recommend rolling into barrels for goodies often.
The master key isn’t good though. I would rather he pick the Old Witch’s Ring, it gives some neat lore rather than breaking the game’s pace for a new player which the Master Key does. Like what if he ends up in Blighttown way too early It’s fine either way but hopefully he doesn’t end up thinking he should be somewhere he shouldn’t be in
Finally, true pain, Ds1 is not that hard compared to everything else in the series, but starting from Elden Ring to DS1 is difficult due to the jank of Ds1. Besides that this will be an absolutely peak series, again.
Yay!!!! Davo you are playing my absolute favorite game of all time! and I played dark souls remastered AFTER dark souls 3 and it's still my favorite. I really wish people hadn't talked you into the master key as it breaks intended progression and may lead you into places you aren't ready for but it is what it is. If anyone can overcome it's you! Have fun and take breathers if you need them because the movement limitations can be a bit aggravating at times.
Movement in Dark Souls 1 is my favorite of all the games from Software, I like how the characters move slowly and methodically, in the next games the pace will be faster and faster, I miss it
Use humanity then reverse hollowing for to become human again, kindle a bonfire you rest at often to get more flasks from it. Theres more firelink to explore. Pine resin buffs your weapons with that element like grease in ER and titanite shards are your smithing stones. Plenty of stuff not worth mentioning because everyone else already is saying it. Check out homeward bones. The game is much more sword and board than ER so with the really bad dodge mechanics try to use your shield to block attacks from anyone your size to do counter attacks and dodge anything that looks like it will break your guard. Follow the npc's advice and ring the two bells, good luck davo :)
Just beat the game, surprisingly I'm not the only one decided to play in 2024, on one of the bosses some random dude had a sign down and I was suprised
Well ok, so few lil tips, you can jump in this game, you gotta hold run button and then double tap it, and if that wont work while running try to tap a left stick one of these should work cuz it changes in DS2 or 3 and I do not remember. Also, there is a lot of hidden areas so look around a lot for example if I would to give you a tip... look close to the FAT cleric at the firelink shrine, there is something cool in there. Also covenants yeaaaah... The one from fat cleric is pretty good for the start, Covenants are mostly PVP related but have some questlines too :D. Oh and when it comes to flasks and humanity, you can use humanity once to reverse hollowing at bonefire, then use second to upgrade bonefire and have more flasks after sitting on it, every bonefire have 5 flasks from the get go but you can upgrade them with humanity. Also, try attacking enemies while falling down on them if you are above them it deals A LOT damage, specially on some bosses. Next thing, use items, do not try to keep them for "later" cuz that is a common rookie mistake, use them if you need them to stay alive. Also, get a death counter pls? It would be fun to have a counter for number of deaths for a whole game and compare it to other gamers like Cohhcarnage for example :D PS. If you do not want this tips or anything just let me know cuz I will write them on every video if I will see you having trouble with something :P
I just started playing 3 days ago, my first souls like game and I kept watching tutorial so TH-cam recommended you. I'll be honest I felt a lot of pain 😂 every newbie did face pain
You had me nervous from the second you beat the Taurus Demon on. I was like....he's not gonna skip the bonfire shortcut, right? RIGHT? Well, surely he'll just grab the next one behind the dragon then...I mean, he's got 5k souls, he's not just gonna run...right..past....everything :) Hahahaha. Nearly gave me a heart attack, but this is awesome content, man. Elden Ring def gave you an edge here, cause I haven't seen a lot of streamers pick up the combat as quickly as you. Can't wait to see more.
The master key is really powerful for players who know the map, but for new players I suggest picking the tiny beings ring for additional HP or the witch's ring so you can talk to a hidden NPC if you find her
@@Esproth not really, divine blessing is really useful when poisoned/toxic and you don't have any moss yet. On my first playthrough it saved me going through upper blight town. Black firebombs are just really good for dealing with dogs or even just the guys on the way to capra demon
Near the firelink shrine there is a graveyard where you can find one of the best strenght weapons. But its a high level zone so i recomend run past the enemies
Hellkite drake takes cover in a corner while he breathes fire and wait around 10 seconds he will come down to the bridge and you can quickly run towards the bonfire.
Legacy Dungeons do not exist in any of the past games lol. That's purely an Elden Ring concept, Dark Souls games do have optional areas but the game is pretty much entirely linear going from area to area.
About the door to the left in the first boss room... Normaly you read every message at the start of the game, when you enter the boss room there's a message on the ground telling you to run away.
Bonefire maintained by the firekeeper like in fire link Shrine has 10 estuses. Normal ones have 5 you need to use humanity from inventory in order to get"upper left corner" humanity. You reserve humanity at the bonfire and then kindle it for 10 estus costing 2 humanity in total.
comment might be too late for you to see this davo, but DS1 was the only game that ever gave me the same feeling oot did as a kid, and I really hope you get to feel that way too. The atmosphere and skyboxes and nature folly all just remind me of what oot showed me for the first time.
Quick tip: If you're dealing with ANY shield enemy that's blocking, you can flick the left analog stick forward and press the light attack button at the same time. This will make you perform a "kick", breaking their guard instantly, most of the time, which also allows you to riposte them.
Also using humanity will give you a 1 next to your life bar. You can reverse humanity at the bonfire if you use it. Then if you use another you can select "kindle" which can increase ur estus to 10 when resting at that bonfire. (Edit) also shooting the dragon's tale on the below part of the bridge will do something if you hit it enough with a bow ;)
Againts shielded hollows you do a "kick"(forward+light attack)kick their shield away and hit. A forward and heavy attack is a jumping attack. Shielded spear hollows easy to circle strafe and then backstab. Most undead foes have Estus flask and can use it to heal back.
I was already happy that you chose the Witch Ring, but you changed your mind... This ring would have helped to reveal a small part of the lore and one character. A lockpick in the first playthrough can break the magic of exploring the world and the order of exploration. A lockpick is good for a speedrun or a second playthrough. In general, if you see that you used a lockpick - know that you should have gotten here by another way, and perhaps much later. Dark Souls 1 is still my especially beloved game. It's a timeless masterpiece of amazing symbolic depth and philosophy ) 39:06 - The entire first Dark Souls is a system of "Legacy Dungeons" Or Legacy Dungeons from Elden Ring are pieces of Dark Souls in the open world. )
Lets goooooo \[T]/ PS: there is no dedicated jump button, no map, no anything lmao. You just gonna have to fight for every little upgrade you get, have fun.
Loved this video! Be sure to look *everywhere* while exploring, stuff can be very hidden, pay close attention to everything around you, it'll help you a lot in this game! Enjoy!
press forward and regular attack to kick. kicking deals massive damage to shield posture (or stamina) and one kick will more often than not be enough to remove their blocking state for a second or two
😊😊😊 I knew you'd find that ladder eventually! I hope you don't mind but I'm going to give some tips and tricks that kept ellie alive during dark souls! So in Dark Souls remastered there's a cool little feature that lets you change your jump to the LS button just like in the other souls games so you don't have to double tap dodge. Armor weight is very important in souls games, more so than in elden ring. In the early game before you get anything to reduce their weight you can simply remove certain pieces of armor to reduce your weight and increase your run and roll speeds. I personally prefer to run around Lordran in nothing but my man thong because that fast roll is the best. Parrying is infinitely easier in Dark Souls Remastered than in any other souls game or in elden ring so give it a shot with a low level enemy. It will help a lot with that big knight up on the tower. Don't ignore key item descriptions! I ran around for ages looking for where I was supposed to go so many times when the damn item description had the info... Oh and most importantly... Fashion is better than function... doesn't matter what the stats are as long as you look good! That's why there's a dodge button and respawns.
excited to see this playthrough! but second playthrough of elden ring, even if you do it off stream, has my highest recommendation. at least for me, i noticed so many things for the first time when i wasn't constantly scared of getting deleted :D . if you want more difference, go through with a totally diff build!
You can remap the jump button to L3. Jumping doesnt have good s so its better to be able to roll while running (you will always need to be running to jump) If you hit light attack while falling you will do a plunging attack for big damage You have to use the humanity in your inventory to use it at the bonfire. Humanity on your person will be represented by the number in the top left. Reversing hollowing makes you not beef jerky, allows you to see and interact with summon signs (online features), kindle the bonfire, and be invaded by npc’s with unique drops. Dying will return you to being beef jerky and any humanity on your person will be with your souls on the ground. Kindling a bonfire raises how many estus flasks you gain from resting at it up to 20. All bonfires start at 5 except firelink shrine which starts at 10. You need to beat a boss thats considered really easy for an item in one of the other paths you can take out of firelink, but its a hard journey with a long runback. Covenants are for online play, different covenants give different rewards when you give them specific items. You can farm these items in game to get the rewards, but it can be tedious without pvp which isnt very active. Switching covenants also takes a portion of your progress away so i would recommend looking into what covenants give you before committing to the grind with chaos servants being the exception for reasons i wont spoil at this point

Master Key lets you access the Valley and from basically the beginning of the game, though. Far more useful in 99% of playthroughs.
@@Trevor21230not useful for new players, going there early is just confusing and spoils a lot of the "wtf" moments that are iconic of a dark souls first play.
He chose wisely
@@Trevor21230unless someone tells you about the master key and it's uses, it really doest do anything that makes sense
@@Trevor21230 you can access the valley after taurus demon so it's not that useful.
Bruh it's 2024 and we're STILL telling new players to grab master key. It isn't necessary for a new playthrough!
When I say I BEEN WAITING for this vid to pop up and make my day man! Can't wait to watch this!
Edit: Bro missing the shortcut prob like 3-4 times hurt my soul, but I get that shit lmao. This game is gonna ask a lot more from you when it comes to looking at your surroundings. I know losing them 6-7k souls hurts like a bitch too, but keep going strong Davo! Wouldn't even blame you for restarting to get a lil reset, but all I'll say is there's a nice ez way to farm souls early game that you found too. Good luck big dawg and can't wait to watch more of this series!
This gonna be a fire series
Little tip: Backstabbing is one of the most useful tools in DS1. Since a lot of enemies will have their shield up slowly guarding, you can just strafe behind them and get a backstab in
46:10 Merchants don't display everything they sell on the first page, so it pays to flip through the catagories to see what they offer
30:47 "For a game that came out in 1995" this game came out in 2011 💀💀💀
CANT TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM FOR THIS SERIES
Thank you for not being like everybody else and playing bloodborne I will definitely watch this series for sure
i saw that there were a few bloodborne playthroughs going on and ultimately decided itd be better to jump into that later on
@@davobandsI love Bloodborne, but the original Souls need some love. Going back to old movement is a trip and a half, making it almost slow enough to feel like a strategy game compared to the brutal speed and combos of all the modern SoulsBorne games.
@@conspiracypanda1200 If davos is doing the whole series I feel like BB should be after ds2 then ds3 then sekiro
@@davobandstbh bro play sekiro next. easily the best combat in the series and the fastest pace
The next journey begins. Looking forward to watching you play this series
Perfect first episode. Thanks for uploading!
I'm so glad you're playing Dark Souls 1. It's got to be a hell of a transition going from Elden Ring to DS1, but once you acclimate to the clunkiness it's peak!
it is but im genuinely enjoying it right now!
@@davobands glad you're liking it! This first vid is already one of my favorite DS playthrus i've ever seen. Controls are worse, but you can feel the bones of elden ring here, it's pretty remarkable how strong they were right out of the gate
I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH, I WILL BE HERE NO MATTER WHAT
Not sure if anyone has said anything but patience is a must for the game, getting fed up and running past things is how you end up with the death at 54:00 , Take it slow and learn the moves. Once you're comfortable with enemy moves then you could run past things but doing so early on will only lead to lost souls and sanity.
(edit) Also plunging attacks are something very useful, in fact both the asylum and taurus demon we spots to practice that but hey you got through it our own way so good on ya.
Tip for Leveling up:
The stats in DS1 are kinda whack. Like Elden Ring they have diminishing returns, giving you less and less each time you level up, but way harsher than Elden Ring. The "soft cap" is where it starts losing effectiveness and the "hard cap" is where the gains are basically nothing.
Vitality: Increases HP: Soft: 30 Hard: 50
Attunement: Increases the amount of spells you can hold: Hard: 50
Endurance: Increases stamina, equip load and bleed resist. Hard: 40
Strength: Increases damage of strength weapons.
Dexterity: Increases damage of dex weapons and slightly increases spell casting speed: Soft: 35 Hard: 45
Resistance: Increases resistance to status effects like poison, curse and toxin. Least useful stat since your Vitality and total Level also increase your status effect resistance. Hard: 50
Intelligence: Increases magic scaling weapons and spells
Faith: Increases holy scaling weapons and mircales
Humanity: Can't be leveled up, but can be increased by finding humanity items. It increases your item drop chance, and is a resource you can spend to reverse hollowing (turn human, some curses are weaker against humans, and lets other players assist or invade you. Humanity can also be used to upgrade bonfires, which give you more Estus flask charges when you rest at that specific bonfire.) Hard: 30
huge tip ty man
Hard cap does not mean "the gains are basically nothing"; it means the gains are literally nothing, so Attunement is the only stat with an absolute hard cap less than 99 (as such, max level challenges should ideally pause at 50 and not start leveling Attunement until Resistance is at 99 😂).
@@Eyedunno I agree.
this was such a good hour of dark souls I loved it
I almost forgot that the Elden Ring NPCs don't end every sentence with the Dark Souls chuckle.
Focus on learning the timing of enemy attacks and take advantage of breaks to unleash a heavy attack.
ahh, thanks for lmk
GG! This is going to be so hype!
Youre funny bro I enjoyed watching this. Dark souls is my favorite game. So much detail and such a unique vibe
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
if you remember the rolling barrel of fire back in the undead burg, there was a flight of stairs right before that leading down to an item you missed
No matter how devastating an attack might look, you can probably block it with your shield
So pumped to journey through this game with you!
anotha CLASSIC series in the making
He’s gonna have so much fun when he encounters the godskin duo
you will never live down choosing the old witches ring
nah he chose the key thank god. thank GOD LMAOOO
@@Nathan-sh1zg oh alright 💀
@@Nathan-sh1zg master key is a bad choice for a first playthrough imo, it breaks the pacing / difficulty curve of the game
The master key isn’t good though. I would rather he pick the Old Witch’s Ring, it gives some neat lore rather than breaking the game’s pace for a new player which the Master Key does. Like what if he ends up in Blighttown way too early
It’s fine either way but hopefully he doesn’t end up thinking he should be somewhere he shouldn’t be in
is it that bad? 😭
Finally, true pain,
Ds1 is not that hard compared to everything else in the series, but starting from Elden Ring to DS1 is difficult due to the jank of Ds1.
Movement in Dark Souls 1 is my favorite of all the games from Software, I like how the characters move slowly and methodically, in the next games the pace will be faster and faster, I miss it
Lol this was great. Very entertaining. I'm a huge dark souls fan. Subbed 🤘
Im so hyper for that playthrough this was my first souls game and it was so amazing especially the dlc will be crazy
IVE BEEN WAITING LETS GOOOO
Havel is so strong that early, i had my brother laughing with just his lore, "he punched a dragon, took the tooth and hit him with it"
Yes! Let's go! Dark souls!
Ah yes the "secret" door that glows orange because it's surrounded by the only torches in the room lol
L3 jumping became a thing in DkS2 onward, but I got so used to the double-tap that I had to change it back for 2 and 3 lol
The payoff was real for all the times you walked past the ladder shortcut
Timing with the gate was so insane, what a play
excited for this, ds1 likes to troll you a lot more than elden ring does, being an older game
The master key is really powerful for players who know the map, but for new players I suggest picking the tiny beings ring for additional HP or the witch's ring so you can talk to a hidden NPC if you find her
black fire bombs or divine blessing are better than the tiny beings ring, the ring barely does anything.
@@Ghorda9 both are one time use consumables, almost never worth picking unless you plan on doing something weird
Quick tip:
If you're dealing with ANY shield enemy that's blocking, you can flick the left analog stick forward and press the light attack button at the same time.
This will make you perform a "kick", breaking their guard instantly, most of the time, which also allows you to riposte them.
there it is. the genesis of peak.
Damn, I so late. Thanks for the great content Davo
thanks for watching mimikdemon
Also using humanity will give you a 1 next to your life bar. You can reverse humanity at the bonfire if you use it. Then if you use another you can select "kindle" which can increase ur estus to 10 when resting at that bonfire. (Edit) also shooting the dragon's tale on the below part of the bridge will do something if you hit it enough with a bow ;)
epic! Davo onto the souls games now this is gonna be great!
YESSIR!!!
This is my first time discovering your channel, and you're a fucking delight. Loving your content.
You actually did amazing against Asylum Demon with the Broken Sword Hilt
Yaay! I love this game :)
It's a timeless masterpiece of amazing symbolic depth and philosophy )
39:06 - The entire first Dark Souls is a system of "Legacy Dungeons"
Or Legacy Dungeons from Elden Ring are pieces of Dark Souls in the open world. )
that intro got me hooked brotha😆
Lets goooooo \[T]/
PS: there is no dedicated jump button, no map, no anything lmao. You just gonna have to fight for every little upgrade you get, have fun.
@4:21 They done ya dirty with that black guy preset.
He's got that goofy looking smile like: "Just happy to be here."
Loved this video!
Be sure to look *everywhere* while exploring, stuff can be very hidden, pay close attention to everything around you, it'll help you a lot in this game! Enjoy!
I would recommend light equip load for faster rolls. The faster rolls help a lot for running past enemies and is generally the best equip load to run.
Also, the game did explain the controls; you just didn't read all of them.
press forward and regular attack to kick. kicking deals massive damage to shield posture (or stamina) and one kick will more often than not be enough to remove their blocking state for a second or two
Let’s GOOOO!!!! So excited for this!
The gasp I gusped when you hit Solaire
"I want the Old Witch's Ring"
Based
Been here since the Elden Ring trailer reaction vid and I'm ready for the whole Fromsoft catalogue
excited to see this playthrough! but second playthrough of elden ring, even if you do it off stream, has my highest recommendation. at least for me, i noticed so many things for the first time when i wasn't constantly scared of getting deleted :D . if you want more difference, go through with a totally diff build!
"... for a game that came out in 1995.." !!! haahaha! enjoying this playthrough already
I ain't ready for the feels man...
Davo ‘the goat’ Bands❤❤❤
If you lock onto an enemy press the movement stick toward them at the same time as attacking and you'll perform a kick. Its very useful for shields.
Game Design 101: Even when you put a giant glowing red door 10ft away from an unkillable boss people will still miss the door.
You can remap the jump button to L3. Jumping doesnt have good s so its better to be able to roll while running (you will always need to be running to jump)
If you hit light attack while falling you will do a plunging attack for big damage
You have to use the humanity in your inventory to use it at the bonfire.
