    Sorry for the lack of coherence and correct terminology, I had just woken up!

    I picked up a Hennessey Asym for a steal a short while ago and love it. The only 'problem' is that it's the older type with the velcro vagina rather than a side zip. And I'm guessing that I'd have to make a similar velcroed slit in an underquilt in order to get in and out. Any tips, suggestions, advice, etc? A friend is a Costco member and I can use a sewing machine adequately (it's just another power tool, right?) so is that likely to be my best option?

      @AJSpinDrift  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess that would be one option, to create an opening down the middle of the underquilt and something that would probably be quite interesting to experiment with if you're making your own. I'm sure someone like UK Hammocks would also be able to make a custom version for your bottom entry Hennessey if you wanting to buy one though. Another option is to add a side entry zip to your hammock. 2QZQ offer this as a service, but that would mean sending your hammock over to them in the US, but if you're feeling really brave, or know someone who's very proficient with a machine, you could do it yourself if you can source a long enough zip.

      If you are still looking into them there is an under quilt named the nest by jacks r better. They just make Velcro that attaches to the bottom entrance and they act as one. I am considering making my own under quilt/covering for the inside to save on the almost 300 price tag. The guy I got it from also sewed a thin layer of synthetic vinyl on the bottom to help as well. There are rings on the inside as well you can attach any insulation or blanket to with just some bungee string/cord and clips. Most of the cheaper hammocks under quilts are just basically sleeping bags with holes in them and tie ons. Sewing machine for heavy mods, most you can do with some simple supplies.

    Nice Mods on that UQ Spin Drift, :-) and nice set up too, always wanted a Hennessy interesting to see how it works out + 1 sub

      Used this setup a few times over the last couple of weeks and it's working really well. Toasty warm and so much better than the sleeping pads that I've been using for the past couple of years. Just need to add a 2QZQ under quilt protector to complete the winter system. I get on really well with the Hennessy, however I'd be very tempted by the DutchWare Chameleon if I was starting from scratch again.

      Thats the trouble, just when you think you got it just right.....you see something else to try, and its hard not to be tempted.

      Hi, all good thanks. This under quilt was custom made for me by a company that is sadly no longer in existence. I made a few modifications to it myself, but there are now some pretty good commercially available options out there.

    How is the underquilt working for you after 5 years?

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been fantastic. I've not needed to make any further alterations to it, it just works. Well worth investing in a decent full length under quilt, the difference it makes to your hammocking comfort is remarkable. I'm hoping to get out again soon, so if I have sufficient light I'll do a follow-up video. Thanks for watching.

      @@AJSpinDrift good to know. I have one in route. What other modifications did you do?

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasonf4258 Other than those mentioned in the video - secondary suspension mod and side clips / tie-out points I've not needed to modify my underquilt any further. I make sure that it's stored in a net bag, rather than a small stuff sack and I always make sure it is aired out and fully dry before storage.

    I checked the UK Hammock HP for Quilts and they have different versions and a few options to choose from within the versions. Could u please tell me which one u used to fit the Hennessy asym?

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I opted for the full length 'Winter' quilt in standard fill weight (no additional down overfill). When I ordered mine there was only one option for overfill, but they seem to have all kinds of options if you're wanting to customise to a specific fill weight now. The product is excellent and I highly recommend them, however, they are all made to order, so be prepared for a bit of a wait (I think mine took about 2.5 months).

    • @Set7200
      @Set7200 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for the quick answer. Then i will also get the winter quilt. (:
      Apperantly they now added a secondary suspension as standart. So i just have to add the side-suspension for the asym design.

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's ace, it's nice to see that they've taken customer feedback on board. Hope you don't have to wait too long and you're out enjoying your under quilt. They're not cheap, but I've not seen a better one.

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a UK Hammocks full length underquilt. Sadly they no longer make them, however a friend of mine has recently bought one from a guy who sells on eBay and he's really pleased with it. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/860-goose-Down-full-length-hammock-under-quilt-blanket/193224058936

      Hi. Unfortunately there isn't a UK supplier yet. I had to order the straps form the US, but they arrived pretty quickly via Amazon.com. Worth the wait, but it would be great to see someone offer them in the UK.

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah hammock camping on a site isn't ideal. It defeats the object a little bit for me, I like to be away from other people and just be able to enjoy the silence and tranquility. Key is to leave no trace, no damage to trees, no rubbish at all and head out to some remote trails. This happens to be in North Wales, but there are plenty of places up in the lakes or South West of Scotland too.

    You may have answered this question in some of the comments below, but if you don't mind sharing again, which brand under quilt do u have? And what material did you use for the extra tying system for it? Nice video!!

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The quilt is made by UK Hammocks. They're great, but not cheap. For the extra secondary suspension tabs and side tabs I used a small strip lightweight nylon webbing that was folded over and stitched to the fabric of the quilt. I can't remember where I got the webbing from, it may have even been from an old bike helmet strap. Standard bungee cord and toggles are used then to tension it all out.

      £175 for an underquilt!?

      They're not cheap, but comparable in price to a down sleeping bag of similar quality. You could always have a go at making your own: th-cam.com/video/vdSCa4RR9Gw/w-d-xo.html

      I

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a down sleeping bag over the top, usually unzipped. If you already have a good sleeping bag, there's no need to go to the expense of a top quilt.

  • @fuceye

    so why is your ridgline so slack?

    • @AJSpinDrift
      @AJSpinDrift  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't ideal, just the way I had it set up in this particular hang. It's not usually like that, but it wasn't actually as bad as it looked when my weight was in the hammock. I had some heavy power packs and an iPad in the storage pouch which pulled the ridge line down on the left (by my feet).

    A better option is to utilize a three system Arctic sleeping bag (military style) consisting of a Gortex outer shell, heavy black bag and an inter light weight green bag. Place the insulation pad ($30 bucks from Hennessy Hammock) in between the Gortex shell and the appropriate bag configuration. It's the warmest configuration you can get. I've used this configuration, both on the ground and in a hammock, all over the world in extreme cold temperatures and have been warm as a bug !

      I seem to remember reading that they were either bought by another company or they sold / licensed their strap to someone else, but I can't find any current reference to them online now. Sadly UK Hammocks have stopped making under quilts too.
