Hennessy Hammock Expedition Asym Zip Review

  • Hennessy has a great product here, it's asymmetrical design is perfect for a flat and comfortable lay with an underquilt or a sleeping pad. The prepackaged rainfly leaves something to be desired, and the whole system could benefit greatly with a set of webbing and buckles.
    Hennessy Expedition: amzn.to/2FgG0Du
    I recommend you not buy the classic version! It's hard to use if you want to use it with an under-quilt at some point.

    I used this hammock in the Amazon Rain Forest with moderated rainfalls, and can say it was perfect. I was easy to carry into the jungle, find a place to setup and crazy usefull in wet lands! It was not easy to buy in Ecuador, so It was a bit expensive to me. However was the best investment I made. Thank you for the review!

    I had the Velcro bottom entry model of this hammock and it took a little getting used to. I damaged it and replaced it with a zip model. I highly recommend buying the six point replacement fly for these hammocks. It is a more reassuring feeling to have it during a rain storm. You can still use the issued fly to protect other equiptment such as your backpack, cooler or generator with it.

    The Hex Fly is bigger then the one that comes with the hammock. I have a Explorer Deluxe and later order the Hex Fly.. Mine is a bottom entry but I had a full zipper installed. Hennessey makes a great product. The only bad thing about hammock camping is that one is never enough. I now own 5 different ones which each I use at different times of the year. No more tents for me. Good review, Thanks for sharing. Enjoy & be safe !

    The mysterious loops inside are for holding their sleeping pad in place. The bungee inside is for holding back the mesh when it is not needed. You lower the mesh, run that bungee over it, then run the spreader bungee through the internal bungee. Now the bug mesh is out of the way completely, and the skies are wide open.
    Bonus Easter egg: the hammock bag will hold a pair of shoes. Then you can hang it from one of the hooks and not mess up the interior.
    I love my Henny.

    The elastic strap at the left side of the hammock (the zipper is intended to be on your right side so your body doesn't put as much weight in the zipper) can also be used to hold the bug net out of the way if you clip it to the o rings on the outside left side.
    Also the tree will be fine as long as the xylem is not injured 360 degrees.

    I have the Expedition ASYM (at least 7 years) and it has changed my camping experience dramatically. Easy set up and take down. He's right about the rain fly, so I have added a Kelty Noah's Tarp to my backpack inventory and solved the shelter problem.
    This is the best hammock sleeping system due to the design, which allows you to sleep on your back, your side or even your stomach (sort of). I camp 15 -20 days per year.

    17:11 - even on a "normal" hammock, you'd be angling yourself diagonally across it to lie flat.
    I do take your point that a rectangular sleeping pad will tend to "self-centre" and force you to lie longitudinally rather than diagonally - that's why it's important to have either a specially shaped pad or an underquilt that will enable you to lie diagonally across the hammock.

I've ordered the Hennessy Expedition Zip version, but customized the order to include the Silnylon hex rainfly (on sale) to give me more space under the shelter to store my gear and to chill out under when it is raining (I always pack a Helinox camp chair).

    Another good video. I have the same hammock in the classic (enter from below) style. It does take getting used to, but I kinda like it. I still have the stock tarp and it does suffice, but you are right about not having any room to spare. It has kept me dry in down pours, but just. I also have a 10 x 10 tarp that I use from time to time, but its weight makes me leave it at home on long trips. I have replace the original line with whoopie slings and I think it makes my set up easier. I use Byer Amazonas Microrope instead of the straps and they are billed as tree friendly and I haven't had a tree complain yet, but they really increase the amount of trees that will work with the set up. Anything I want to take into the hammock with me is usually in a small dry bag which I just clip to the ridge line. Works for me. I even put my food bag there sometimes. Shhhh, don't tell the bears...

    • @brianwhippie2264
      @brianwhippie2264 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the stock fly is very small. I'm thinking about removing it from the hammock and putting it up on its own ridgeline so I can, at least hang it lower to the hammock. Your thoughts?
      I prefere a 'cozier' feel while in the hammock anyway.
      I may remove it and not even carry it....just use a silnylon tarp.

    • @EarthToneLoGear
      @EarthToneLoGear 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly how I hang it. On its own ridgeline.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Whippie When I used a bowline knot on either end of this hammock, and ENO atlas straps (I found the webbing straps to be too small for a few trees I wanted to use on multiple trips so I started bringing my other straps) I tied some guyline to either end of the fly and then to the trees (seperate from the hammock suspension)
      I have since changed over to a Warbonnet Edge tarp for 3 season use, and I will probably use my ENO profly tarp for colder applications.

      It may be too late but... I bought a Hennesy Hammock bottom entry about 2 years ago and it’s been great. I recently bought a zip model about 2wks ago. Haven’t been in but for a couple of hours but it appears to be just as good as the other model. The rain fly that he complained about, is just big enough to cover the hammock but if you customize your order, for $10 more you can get a hex rainfly. Which I recommend. I agree with your guess in 2 people not being comfortable in the same hammock. I’m not sure how that’s possible but I’ve never tried it.

    Excellent informative review, thank you - it's pretty much put the last nail in the coffin so far as me maybe getting a Hennessy hammock is concerned. It's obvious from this video that I would need to replace the stupid suspension system and get a decent-sized tarp - on top of the cost of an already expensive hammock... it's more expensive than a Ticket To The Moon Lightest Pro hammock, which already comes with a far superior suspension system (and adjustable structural ridgeline with gear organiser).

    Looks like your strap is on a poison ivy vine, made that painful mistake myself. Back of the tree is the most important part for webbing and front won't be damaged. Hex tarp is their next larger tarp with six connection points and stock is just an asym tarp. Adding an adjustable ridgeline will let you shorten the hammock to get more coverage from an asym tarp.

    the problem with hamocks is that the rain works its way across the tree cord down to your sleeping system.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you have that problem just try a small string or shoelace to your continuous loops on either end of your hammock. Gravity will force the water down.

    Hi, thanks for the review of this. Very helpful. I have a question about the tarp - you said you'd reccomend an upgrade with the tarp....but do Henessey do a bigger tarp for the allowance of cooking under it, as you say in wet weather?

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they make bigger tarps.

    • @justinsparks5026

      Dez Wilson I upgraded my trap to the bigger tarp and there is plenty of room under neath it

    Also, can the bug net be removed or packed out of sight, say for a casual lay down (without the tarp) in the sun?

    I decided to purchase this hammock. I've been trying to figure out why my Ridgeline is so tight. I should be able go pinch it up r down right? Thank you.

      @RobinBokullProductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I am also interested in buying this hammock. My only concern is the ridgeline. Can you make more space between the hammock and the ridgeline by changing the distance between the trees? Is it even possible to remove the ridgeline? I mean, when you want to use the hammock just as a ”chair” 🤔🤔

    So I viewed both reviews on the Hennessey and the blackbird, I’m a beginner hammock goer but I like to have the best. Would the Hennessey be a good starter for me? I’m also 6’2.

      @FrozensAdventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +lx3ful the most popular hammocks right now are dream hammocks in my opinion. I just ordered mine to try it out. Warbonnet and Hennessy have went to using heavier fabrics and I don't really recommend them anymore.

    What was the rain fly you returned to Hennessy? Was it the hex fly? And also why did you return it?

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it was the hex fly, I purchased the ultralight backpackers model with the hex fly originally, but I couldn't get comfortable in that model.Some people love it, I just didn't. I decided not to keep the rainfly because my ENO profly was easier to adjust and only weighed a couple ounces more. I have since upgrade to a warbonnet edge tarp.

      Check out the Warbonnet Edge tarp. I'm going to be using that as soon as the weather warms up. I also have the ENO profly which is heavy at 22oz but very durable. Also check woot. Yukon Outfitters usually has their tarp for $20, same basic shape as Hennessy stock rain-fly, but more coverage.

      Outdoor Adventures What do you think about the Hennesey Explorer Delux Asymmetrical Zip Hammock....is this a better product..what are the differences between the Expedition Asymmetrical zip hammock and the Explorer..besides the 40 dollars ??
      is it worth to get the Explorer Delux better than the Expedition Asymmetrical zip ??

      Kanzee Looks like it's just roomier, and meant for people over 6 feet tall. It's also a decent amount heavier. I personally wouldn't get it, but I'm short at 5'6". I also have been using a Warbonnet Blackbird hammock, I like it more than the Hennessy.

      Well I settled and bought the Hennessy Expedition Hammock and xtra Snake Skins for it....They don't Sell the Warbonnet here in Canada
      I am a rookie Hammock camper, so i think this will be a good start up for me, and will pass onto the kids when i do get the Warbonnet hammock next year 2016. I tried out your rolly pooly demonstration with the Snake skins...and found there is a massive bulg in the center part...I will need to do some more practice with the tube roll ..LOL..
      I will sleep in it tommorrow and see how it goes..stay tuned..will give you an update on my progress....thank you for your excellent demo and suggestions.
      cheers ;-) Happy hammocker

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I returned the hexfly (hennessyhammock.com/catalog/products/hex_rainfly_70d_polyester/) because it felt flimsy, was heavy, did not have linelocks like my ENO profly, the guylines were very low quality so they needed to be replaced, and it felt a little too big for my tastes (too much coverage, and for $80 there are better tarps out there, check out warbonnet Edge (www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/edge/)

    6:24 I agree, I bought this hammock for 180.oo canadian dollars, (snake skins included with caribeaners etc..) I can't adjust that rig line...mine is always slacking,
    Very dissappointed with there shitty customer service. No help there.
    I am so frustrated with getting help , so I cut the rig line off...and modifyed my own for a couple of trips. All my other hammock camper friends thought this hammock was a waste of money, for our weekend trips.
    On my 2nd camping outing....The cheap plastic clips borke on the tarp , with heavy winds..
    ...and I have decided to buy the Warbonnet hammock next..no more Hennessey for me or my friends. I gave my Hennessey to the neighbours kid to play with, in his tree fort. didn't last long under his time..lol
