I have a Citizen a limited edition version of the NY0085 and I would absolutely recommend it. It's so liberating knowing you have a watch you simply don't have to worry about. Super tough, reliable and not too expensive to replace if something catastrophic did go wrong. The inky black dial is completely gorgeous as well. I just love it!

I bought my first gateway watch in April of this year - the SKX007 - for a trip to Mexico. I took it everywhere, including snorkelling and surfing (or as I call it, falling into the ocean repeatedly). The watch is great, and looks beautiful. Love the SKX. I'm happy I got one and will keep forever! ...and it really sparked my watch obsession too!

One can also build an SKX from mod parts) CrystalTimes sells a case, sapphire crystals etc. Can pickup a dial, hands, NH36, crown, strap code jubilee, and end up with like a $500 version of the SKX for no good reason just to have one :) Or, get the Sharkey one for a third of the price and be happy it's an option :))

Honestly, I would recommend picking up an SKX even at highly inflated prices, they are still absolutely worth it. Yeah, you get the movement of an 80€ watch, but it looks more refined and timeless than any other diver in the sub-1000€ range. And mine hasn’t skipped a beat, even after dropping it on stone tiles several times and taking it for a swim twice a week.

I own 4 different color variations of the NY-0040/80 and only 1 SKX for good reason. It’s a much better watch IMO, with hand winding and diver extension factory bracelet. They also are more accurate, and have much better bezel action, and everything lines up. Just my 2 cents. Cheers!

Thanks for the video - very timely. Even hard core SKX fans have to admit it was getting long in the tooth and I think the many shortcomings of the SKX have to be acknowledged. IMHO I think you may have been a bit too dismissive about the new Seiko 5 line. It looks like Seiko are positioning it to be what most SKX fans are interested in: an entry--level sport watch with classic diver looks and an updated movement. It loses the screw-down crown and 200m certification but I think Seiko are recognizing that most people are "desk divers" anyway. The Prospex line is a step up for those who want a serious dive watch. As a marketing move I think it is smart to position the two lines in this way. I would go with the Seiko 5 over an homage watch any day if I were in the SKX segment. Again, thanks for the video.

Besides that the Seagull Ocean Star is the best diver you can get for 300$ in my opinion.

Hi-beat 28800pbh hand windable, hacking movement with very good accuracity; sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance, solid end-links, thick clasp, nice lume, smooth screw down crown and a very good looking case back.

The Citizen is still working, after i changed 1 time its battery, whether the Seiko need a new battery every 2 years (apart the fact that its hour hand doesn't work any more). It was a re-issue of an iconic and popular designs from the 70’s, the 6309 and 7548. It was a professionally certified (and built/tested) dive watch. All this at a very affordable price, from one of the most reputable and recognizable watch brands. For many years, no other watch could even touch it for value. But......people forget.

Really wish I'd bought an SKX before Christmas when Creation Watches had them for about $176 USD on a sale. Ever since then I've watched them slowly raise the prices. I shifted focus to "better" watches by Seiko like the Samurai and the Turtle, the latter I'm wearing now as a current daily, and both can be found at realistic prices. I bought both watches second hand, pristine condition for around what a new SKX costs, and both keep excellent time (both are within 5 sec/day on the wrist and the Turtle usually is within -2).
Anyway, great video with great alternatives! I've got my eye on the Mini Turtle and the Citizen Promaster. Please never stop making videos!

Following up on this comment, I was at my local watch dealer yesterday intent on drooling over the Solar Tunas and the Grand Seiko diver they usually have on display, and saw about 10 variations of the new Seiko 5 series in the case. Now, I live in Japan and this particular store has pricing in line with the Seiko website, so the models represented were anywhere from $300-400 USD. These are JDM models with kanji day wheels and "Made in Japan" on the dial. My guess is that we will be finding international versions of these all day long from other retailers for around half this price, so I'm actually not one of the ones complaining about the pricing of these new models given the specs. As to the watches themselves, while I didn't physically handle any of them to compare them to the SKX (which would not have mattered anyways as I haven't held an SKX, but do have one on order at the moment), I must say they were some brilliant looking pieces. SKX style casing, many different colors, including one that looked like the SKX009, and an orange dialed one that looks lackluster on the website, but in person has an incredible sunburst dial. I have to admit they were some incredibly nice watches, even considering the only 100 meters water resistance. While these won't replace the SKX for some, I think time will tell if this was a good move for Seiko. Someone will definitely buy these watches though, and I just might be one of them if street pricing at other retailers is more realistic.

Great alternatives list, and I enjoyed the SKX being on it (my kind of humor...sorry, Yank spelling). Video idea: Discuss the new Alpinist rumors Seiya Japan posted. in their blog. I knew Seiko wouldn't completely give up on it. They surely know it's got a following, and that limited blue version just confirmed they know what is up. It HAS to come back. They sound extremely thrilling, especially the white and the black models. I don't know much about the 6R35 movement, so maybe you could enlighten us (history, specs, etc.). I was lucky enough to get in on the recent Hodinkee second batch release of the blue Alpinist at the US$600 price. I felt that was a fair value for a limited model that looked that good. A bit smaller than my 7.25" is used to lately, but it still looks great, and I love it. I truly get why it's such a cult classic. I'm not at all surprised on the pricing they list, and I literally told my friends a new one would probably have a newer movement and cost $700, partly due to Seiko's intentional move up the pricing market. I did not know how dead close I'd be. Here's the story - www.seiyajapan.com/blogs/news/the-alpinist-will-make-a-comeback-in-jan-2020

Great vid Jody! after hearing the fate of the SKX I decided to create an all black version using my original SKX007 dial left over from a previous mod. I have a PVD SKX case with a DD Sapphire and black Yacht Master bezel. I'll be dropping in an NH36a and adding SKX hands with black trim. I think I'll call it my Le Morte d'skx build 😂😂😂

Good video Jodie. I happen to be a fan of the Turtle which shares space next to my SKX. While I tend to prefer a larger watch, I also like the Baby Turtle design very much. I don't find the looks polarizing at all, but that's a matter of personal taste. Good call on the Citizen ProMaster too. Another good alternative and at an affordable price.

That's what I wonder too! I recently bought a Citizen Blue Razor (NH8389-88L) automatic, not a proper diver's watch but with 100m WR it's totally fine for me. Keeps good time, maybe +/- 10s per day and the movement has proven its abilities because it's been in production for decades. It hand winds which is a plus in comparison to the SKX, but as the SKX it doesn't hack. Has a 120 click unidirectional bezel which has no wobble whatsoever. The build quality in general is perfect for the price and as many reviews say Citizen has a very good quality control , some say it's better than Seiko's. So I don't really get why Citizen watches don't get more appreciation, because they totally deserve it!

  • @OmairArif

I have an SKX009 and a Sharkey SKX homage, and I can say the Sharkey is pretty good, especially for the price. The Oyster bracelet is pretty good as well, though it does have a press clasp and hollow end links.. In fact, I'm wearing the Sharkey bracelet on the SKX009 right now. My only complaint with it is that the Lume isn't that great. Considering it has Sapphire and a NH35, which are two of the most popular mods for the SKX, you can think of it as buying a pre-modded SKX.

    • @OmairArif

@@rafaeldiaz7636 About the same. The only difference in feel between the two is the bezel. The teeth around the bezel are more pronounced than the actual SKX, which makes it easier to grip. The turning of the bezel feels different from the SKX as well. It doesn't feel cheaper, just different. It take a bit less force to turn it as well.
The only thing that I guess seems cheaper than the original is the caseback, as the original has the wave pattern in it and the text is engraved. On the homage everything on the caseback is just printed.

I don't have the original SKX to compare it to but I did notice the lume on my Sharkey SKX is brighter and lasts longer than the lume on my Seiko SNZG15 (which I always thought has really good lume) so it's not all bad. Mine does have a different issue though; not all the hour markers line up with the markers on the chapter ring. Not sure if it's an alignment issue or something more serious like a misprinted dial perhaps, have you noticed this on yours too? For the price I paid I don't mind it has some flaws though, and to be honest I only notice it if I take off my glasses and take a real close look. One of the benefits of aging eyes I guess, but I can imagine it being an annoyance to some. Mine is the white dial version by the way.

    • @OmairArif
      @OmairArif 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@storm3016 Mine is the white dial as well, I've found the Lume starts out pretty bright but fades quickly compared to my other watches, including my Sharkey 6105 Turtle.
Regarding the chapter ring, I haven't noticed it, but if that is the case, I guess that make it more authentic, considering the SKX is notorious for having misaligned chapter rings.

I’m not surprised it’s being discontinued, especially since they recently launched the Seiko 5 “SKX-lite”, and I’m not complaining, because the SKX has been at lease $100 overpriced for a few years now (I can get the Turtle, with the objectively better moment and dial for the same price).
Besides which, ever since Orient launched the Mako/Ray II I’ve considered it the obvious alternative. Spec for spec, it matches the SKX, only with a noticeably better movement (hacking, hand-winding at -15/+15 accuracy, much better than Seiko’s -20/+30), and can be had for up to half the price of the SKX and Turtle (holds its own against the turtle too). The Kamasu is a great alternative if you don’t mind the $100 premium and you want sapphire, but I still think the Mako/Ray II is the best value Diver available, which is what most who shop for the SKX are looking for.
