I only mod something I don't intend to sell and watches of this price range aren't an investment. Watches like this are meant to be used, loved and worn daily.
I bought my SKX007 three years ago for the holidays and it’s been my daily wear watch. Love it’s versatility, far from perfect watch. Might have paid $250 for it at the time
It's been produced since the mid 90s hence the discontinuation of it, plentiful in south east asia and in the second hand market though. It's that every "Asian-Uncle's-watch" type of thing really.
The profit margins were low on the SKX. There was no competition in the marketplace at that price point for a certified dive watch. Seiko has decided to move up market, and to let marketing take the reigns of determining their strategy in order to increase revenue. Other brands within the Seiko family are now the value leaders. The Seiko brand itself is going to come with a premium. It wasn't reasonable to expect that they would continue the SKX line forever. They have new lines of certified dive watches with enhanced features and prices to match. The discontinuation of the JDM standard bearers is the real disappointment in this realignment. You can get a functional SKX homage from long island watch. It has everything except the certification and the branding.
I just saw 5 skx013 in a mall. In my country a 100 USD watch is already considered expensive but if ever people decide to buy one they will choose a DW, Fossil, or MK. over seiko.
You should get it bc they are going for around $500.bc they’ve been discounted and the demand is high. I wish I was in your country and could buy it or buy all their stock and flip easy.

Jody, THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO, it really touched my heart. I'm the guy from Zelos group with the beautiful, but badly adjusted green Willard. Yes, the SKX is great and I've got 2. One is standard out of the box and one with NH36, sapphire, Strapcode Angus :-) . I have or had everything, from Vostok to Daytona, but 2 watches will remain: my SKX 009 and my Kermit. I'm looking out for your next video, have a nice save and healthy 2021. Kindest regards, Uwe
I love the skx design! I just wish it came with the better movement, sapphire crystal, and a nice lumed bezel. I think I’m going for a Long Island watch version where the mods are already in place. Great video as always!!!
Love this vid! I properly got into collecting like a year ago, and the SKX was one of the first pieces I wanted. I’ve been watching the prices spiking on them with horror. Finally picked up a second hand 007 for $300 Aussie just yesterday. Stoked!
My story is similar to yours. I've had many in the past, but this month ended up buying an SKX009J on a rubber strap. We human beings always prefer what is hard to get.
I'm relieved to hear that you have also bought your SKX007J1 at the same price and seller as I have after I've read some awful reviews of Creation Watches.. Im expecting to receive mine in 5 very long days. I can't wait!! Cheers

My first SKX was a 009 bought new. Then I saw the 007, sold the 009 and got a great deal on a 007 from the bay like new with box and papers. Regulated the 007 and today it keeps fantastic time gaining only a few seconds a week after more than 15 years. The watch is a legend, but there's a lot of competition now.
I own an all original Seiko 4205-015B bidirectional bezel roughly 38mm, the tiny movement is automatic, it was intended for woman but suits my wrist. I love it because they are all gone, wrecked...or aftermarketed disgraced, So yes, save the Skx and 7002, 6309 and 6105 are pretty expensive so are quite safe. Well done Jody.
My first automatic watch I bought 3 years ago, it was an SKX, mostly based on your recommendations, (I have not been disappointed). Then an SNA411, then a Vostok... Love the channel, the content and my SKX... 😁
I'd swap the original insert back. The two tone bezel is an iconic look. I was wearing it a little over a year ago and someone completely random can shouted at me at a restaurant "is that an SKX?" It will grow on you.
The gateway drug watch.. The 009 is my personal favourite. I got it and all hell broke loose. I now have a bunch of divers but my 009 is still my beater and it always will be!
the Japan model SKX was never available on a bracelet, it was always on the rubber strap. Only the K models had the choice of the two strap options. Bought my 007J in 2004 and I'm very pleased that I did then! Still my favourite watch despite now having a lovely Omega Seamaster and many many others!
Good decision and pickup. I’ve got a stock SKX007 (as well as a SXK009) in my collection and it will stay original. I enjoy wearing it this way. Nice video. 👍
Always been of two minds about the SKX. I appreciate its appearance but could never wrap my head around its outdated movement. And while I understand that it has a lively modding community (of which you are exemplary) I would just rather start with a watch I didn’t think need so much to start with. But I understand its popularity and how it has been a catalyst for so many in our hobby. Cheers and Happy 2021 mate!
The value going forward will be for near mint unmolested models. A mate of mine buys sporty cars that are popular with the modding crowd. He drives and enjoys them but keeps them totally stock. 5-10 years later when he comes to sell, he literally has people asking him to name his price as they all want one that's totally stock and hasn't been screwed up.
I remember in the early 2000s when new SKXs were selling for around US$120. Bought my first two (173 and 007) used on Ebay in about '04. One was about $75, the other was $57. My first new one was $99 shipped...on the bracelet! Man, these things used to be CHEEEEAP. Those days are loooooong gone. But I think over the years I have acquired one of each (007, 007J, 009, 009J, A35, 011J, very rare 011K, 173), so I am set.
I purchased my first SKX in 2000, it is the North American 173 version. Been serviced once. A few years ago I purchased a new old stock 173, (I just like the dial face better than the 007.). As old as I am, I figure I’m now set for the rest of my life 😆👍.
I've spent way too much money on watches this year... Jody has had alot to do with it. Been on the fence about the skx for ages but finally pulled the trigger because of this video. Just purchased from the website he mentioned, could only find a discount code for 7% but it saves you $29 on the 007 so not bad. Manontime is the code. All the best everyone and thank you Jody 😊⌚👍🏻
Thanks for the code, pushed me over the edge (009J). My first auto was a 009J a couple years ago, sold in the ensuing time as I moved around the watch world. There are certainly better watches out there (and I have some) but there's a nice nostalgic tug here that couldn't be resisted. Don't know it will get worn much, but will be fun to have in the box and cheap enough for occasional wear.
@@drewjfrink Nice man! No worries, glad it could help someone. This will be my first skx but I've heard so much about it that it feels like an old friend already haha. The modding side to this watch has reeeaaalllyyy caught my eye lately so we'll see if I leave it untouched 😅
@@ObiMunn They do have a special feel, even with all their issues. Enjoy! Mine will stay stock, unless I have to have any QC issues addressed -- in that case it'll probably get a flat sapphire and NH36 while in there. Plenty of good folks out there to do the mods reliably for folks like me that are not cut out to be watchmakers.
You know how to get me spending money 😂 I now have several Casio and a Vostok Amphibia (just one so far....) thanks to your vids! Whilst we’re talking about thanks, just want to say a big thank your for all your content you’ve put out this year! I hope 2021 is an absolute belter for you!
I was late to the SKX party and didn’t fancy the prices on eBay for a secondhand piece. But after watching this video and after a bit of umming and ahing I finally caved and ordered a SKX007J from Creation Watches and I’m so glad I did! I did pay over the odds of course and the tax and import charges on top of that stung a bit but on the plus side I got a new stock SKX (mines a 2018 if I’m reading the date right) and I’m totally happy with my purchase (misaligned chapter ring and all 😂). Given the on paper dimensions I always expected a much “bigger” watch but the SKX is just so wearable. All the cliches you hear about the short lug to lug making a huge difference to the on wrist feel and presence are totally true! I actually thought they’d sent me an 013 by mistake initially! I’m really happy with mine and grateful to Jody for giving me the push I needed to finally pick one up.
I have two, first bought in 2012, second when I heard a rumour they were going to discontinue it. One lives in my dive bag as a back up as I won’t dive relying on just an electronic dive computer. The other is mainly worn when travelling to somewhat “iffy” countries, both on the rubber strap, which I find really comfortable. Day to day is a 39mm Explorer or 43.5mm Planet Ocean, and both the SKX are as accurate as the 2 hugely expensive watches.
Like you I got rid of the rubber strap immediately and bought the Seiko bracelet but was bitterly disappointed with how cheap it feels. Uncle Seiko make an amazing curved waffle strap which will be staying on my SKX for the rest of it’s life
Those inserts for the 009 you have are counterfeit Jody. You can tell by the lume pip and that Seiko has never sold OEM inserts as a replaceable part. The Seiko lume pip is actually Lumibrite enclosed in a little Hardlex capsule and designed to fit into the rear of the insert. They crank them out by the hundreds in the Philippines which is Feiko Frankenwatch Central for the SKX. You could try and pick up a genuine insert from Dagaz or buy a whole bezel with the insert already installed from Watch Parts Plaza, Watch Material, Cousins UK, or even eBay.
I don't really get why people mod those. The appeal of it back in the 90s was it was like a stripped down to just an engine with seats Honda Civic. It's purity of function is what makes it cool.
@@Anddrew914 Yeah, 99% of those kits and spoilers were purely for aesthetics and after some time was frowned upon, hence the derogatory term "ricers". A huge reason why aesthetically "clean" sports cars from that period are highly sought after nowadays.
I bought one SKX 009J from ebay brand new for 269€ in 2020 and the cool thing is that looking to the serial number it seems to be that the watch was made in the last month of manufacture date in 2019 before they discontinued it. That's a nice thing.👌
A timely video. I bought a brand new SKX 009J1 Last week. I'd uhmmmmed and ahhhhd for so long I realized there was going to be a limited amount of brand new stock...and so bit the bullet. I already have a J model 007 that I've had for 12 years now...and it's still in great condition. I'd really recommend the Strapcode Angus Jubilee. It really has transformed my 007. I like the super-J too....but find the end-links on that one slightly 'chinzy'. The Angus end-links slot in the other way round (more like the original SKX stock bracelet). It really does look the absolute bollocks....and well worth the Premium over the basic super jubilee.
I had and modded over a dozen SKXs a few years back (the 171 dial is my favorite). I gave them all up when I got a Spork (SRP043K). Since then, my Orient Mako II USA with the white dial fits the bill.
YUM! My 007s, or the one that is working on its slinky Jubi isda sheeee!!!! All My dead ones have so many classic momentos I hope to bring Em back to life or pass Them on, along with the good luck and great times that We shredded through, Oh Yeeeeaaa! Great stuff JOMW.
Happy New Year! The second proper watch I bought for myself was a SKX back in 2009 in Bangkok. I have since bought two more! All of them are modded differently.
I never had a taste for divers until recently, and have come to appreciate the SKX. Even though there are 'better' options for the money, the SKX is still the original. So, in 2022, I've ordered a new SKX009J, which will be my first SKX. I'll be keeping it original, save for a nice Strapcode bracelet instead of the supplied rubber strap. Am I crazy? Probably! Do I care? Not a bit!
Thirded. The eco is what the SKX used to be. It's actually better than what the SKX used to be. A real dive watch under $200. And this is coming from a Seikophile.
I did a similar thing. I'd had an SKX007 years ago, but never really bonded with it. I wore it on the nasty plasticky strap. I eventually sold it on. I bought an SKX009 earlier this year and it came on the OEM jubilee. I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort of the bracelet. I then ordered and SKX007 and put it on a jubilee too. I think both will stay in my collection long-term now that they're discontinued.
If you are looking for an SKX to mod I would recommend looking at the Islanders from Long Island Watch. They are what I would call already modified SKXs with sapphire bezels, sapphire crystals, hacking and hand winding movements, and solid ending bracelets. Not to mention a fantastic assortment of colors.
My 013 came in in March this year, modded ( I would prefer to say ‚pimped‘) with NH 36, flat sapphire ( no coating), fully lumed bezel insert in red/blue, signed crown and Strapcode jubilee. Price point incl. labour cost ( I keep my hands off!) ca. € 650.-, $ 530.- at the current exchange rate. Not bad.
I bought my Turtle J a few years ago as it was on sale and not much more than the SKX, but the SKX has such a wonderful face that it's faults seem to melt away. I will get one at some point.
I would get a turtle for basically the same price. Same divers 200m, better movement, higher quality dial, supposedly better bezel action and a really comfortable rubber strap.
Jody, so until this last video I managed to amass a watch collection of over 100 pieces (I never sell/flip what I buy, feel like I don't know how! for some reason) without ever being tempted to buy a Seiko SKX (bad experiences with the 7S26 movements). But alas, after watching your video I finally decided I was doing myself a disservice to not at least experience one and found an SKX009 new-in-box, for about $250.00USD from a dealer in Singapore on one of those terrible rubber straps (a new strap is on order from Uncle Seiko). To my surprise, I can finally see what all the fuss is about! So far, I honestly love the watch and astonishingly to me, the movement is running within about 5-10 seconds of atomic time a day (my last 7S26 was more like 40 seconds off/day). To get around the hacking I just let it run down and wait for the atomic clock to match with the seconds on the watch and just before that happens, do the "Seiko shuffle" to get the second hand moving at the exact time. Damn you, like I needed yet another watch I didn't need!
Bought my first 007 in 1996, and it's still perfect and has remained one of my favorites. Just got the 009 after hearing they'd been discontinued. I'd never sell or mod (besides changing bands when it suits me), as they're classic as is.
Lol I got the Seiko SKX013 for Christmas from my wife (after, ahem, strong encouragement). I wanted one before they became too expensive or disappeared altogether.
I was about to sell my skx007 and 009...not anymore though after watching this video. Will keep in my collection abit longer and who knows, maybe they will end up staying in my collection forever
I starting collecting with a "Budget" Seiko, the SNK809, and almost gave up on automatics before I really got started. It was worse in every way than the Citizen Eco-Drives I had been wearing for over a decade. I bought the 809 because TH-cam told me it was the perfect starter automatic.... Never again. I understand why TH-camrs talk about the SKX, but the whole hype thing with the 809 has me instinctively pulling back anytime I see the watch world universally praise a watch now.
Some watches just give views more than others and ytubers can't stop rambling about them. That skx is a terrible piece of metal that rattles on a bracelet. You can't even hand whine them. I don't get it. For 300-400$ there is a whole world of good watches.
@@reveme My problem with it is it felt cheap, kept poor time, and in reality looked cheap. I get that it is cheap, but the way it was praised I expected more. Rather than being a good starter auto, it was a good starter watch for someone who hasn't been wearing a watch. My Citizens looked better, felt better, and had better specs apart for the crystal(also mineral). I bought a Hamilton and have never seriously considered a Seiko again.
@@Furniture121 Hamilton is on another league for sure, well done. My Seiko is cheap but mighty for the price. I've spent 50€ for my Seiko and 10€ for a nato strap, my watch keep a good time (always +-10sec around the correct time. I keep it in sync) and I'm good with it. Enjoy your Hamilton 👍
Nice move Jody, great addition to your collection. Regarding the 009, a movement upgrade is always welcome, but come back to the Pepsi bezel, as God intended.
@@JustOneMoreWatch Hit Mark up @islander. I mentioned your channel to him. Hes a super nice guy. It would be so cool if your channel did a few shows with Mark and the Urban Gentry. My top 3 Watch channels
Had a couple over the years(one stock, one modded) , traded up to Turtle as soon as they came out (a much better watch in every way imho) & replaced that for a new 6r35 Sumo for Xmas 😍👏🏻 Can't say I feel any nostalgic affection for the SKX's, but clearly those old Seikos planted the seeds.. Cheers mate 🌊👍🏻👍🏻.
Happens to be the watch which dragged me into watch collecting. Got mine for 180 Euro back in December 2017 from Amazon Germany! I never thought that it would sell for 2x the price in 2020. Insane. I've got my second SKX, a 009 for Christmas 2018, sold that one for kinda cheap 200. My 007 will never leave my collection. Oh, I wear mine on Nato straps.
I bought a green King Turtle back in October for $375 and I really love it. Haven't seen it at price since. I also added a Strapcode Super Engineer II.
In 2018 during black Friday, Creation watches had the SKX013 and the 011 on sale. I ended up paying $175 U.S. for each. I thought it was a good buy. Cheaper then the price I paid for my 007 and 009 two years prior which was about $200. A good thing about the SKX, they hold their value. One may even make a couple of bucks when they sell it. I am very lucky, all four run superb. They really are a great watch for the money.
Watching this with my SKX009J and feeling good about it. I got mine in 2017 and enjoy on on the Strapcode super jubilee. However, if I were looking today, I would go to Long Island watch and get and Islander. They’re basically SKX-like but with upgraded movement, bracelet and sapphire glass.
It now makes total sense as to why I am being tagged in watch pictures on Instagram, being added by people I don’t know on Facebook who are sending me messages telling me they’re subscribed to my channel and sending me pictures of watches! Hello my fellow Jody Musgrove!

That was before they almost tripled in price. Idk why though. I just bought the Heimdallr SKX instead.

Well, I sold it for $50, so you missed the boat on that one mate!
I’ve got to say i way prefer the new one, much cleaner and tidier
@@jancovanderwesthuizen8070 I agree
@@JustOneMoreWatch Sounds good. I regret even mentioning it. It’s your show. I appreciate your videos.
SKX007 is always in my rotation.
No mods.
My 009...needs more wrist time.
The style and look of it seems to me, a better fit in the summer.
I'd swap the original insert back. The two tone bezel is an iconic look. I was wearing it a little over a year ago and someone completely random can shouted at me at a restaurant "is that an SKX?" It will grow on you.
I would love one for nostalgia purposes. But $300 can buy you a great watch nowadays. I'll just have to refer back to your videos when I miss it! lol
The 007 j is a classic. Congrats!
The gateway drug watch.. The 009 is my personal favourite. I got it and all hell broke loose. I now have a bunch of divers but my 009 is still my beater and it always will be!
SKX's are like chocolate chip cookies... one is NEVER enough! Happy modding.
the Japan model SKX was never available on a bracelet, it was always on the rubber strap.
So they can mod it themselves lol.
Plenty of good folks out there to do the mods reliably for folks like me that are not cut out to be watchmakers.
there is still the citizen ny0040. certified, 200$ range, japanese panty markers included.
bought mine way after the skx and actually prefer it.
Yes I agree, but still occasionally think of re buying the 009
At this money I'm into the NY007x Titanium autos... even with the rotor hiss, such a nice thing. Had an NY0076-10EE for a year now
I sold my SKX007J1 for an SKX399 in a very acceptable condition and haven't looked back since. An SKX is really a must-have.
Jody, a totally mad video. Given the truly strange 2020, your madness is well received. Thanks, mate.
Tried one on the rubber strap, most uncomfortable strap ever. Anything would be an improvement
Same with the SRPD61K. Almost regretted buying it, changed to a different rubber strap, and it made a world of difference.
Do I have the Vostok strap for you
@@georgecostanza2157 since then I acquired a Seiko SNZH55 K1 which only looks like a diver but comes with a nice steel bracelet
I knew there was a reason I was still awake at 3am.
Its the best time for crypto market pumps and dumps. Look into Polkadot crypto thank me later.
Buy yourself an Island Watch Co. watch. SKX is a thing of the past. Great video 👍
Picked up an skx009j this summer before they were gone as I’d given my 2001 sxk007k to my brother.👍
I would try a blue sapphire bezel on the 009 to bring out the navy dial... If you don't like the pepsi look
Well thank you Sir, just spent another 270$ on a watch, even though I tried not to buy any this year... Almost made it, thanks a lot :)
Thanks for watching mate!
Such a awesome seiko watch. Iv noticed they have really gone up in price. It doesn't surprise me it's a iconic watch.
You inspired me to throw on my good old 7J, and on the stock rubber no less. Has the sturdy charm of an old tire swing.
I am happy to have a 009 in the collection.
I think I'll try and get a two tone ceramic lumed from lcbi for the eventual mod Steven. And yes, Philippines from memory!
I don't really get why people mod those. The appeal of it back in the 90s was it was like a stripped down to just an engine with seats Honda Civic. It's purity of function is what makes it cool.
People put wings and body kits on stripped down Honda civics. *Shrug*
@@Anddrew914 Yeah, 99% of those kits and spoilers were purely for aesthetics and after some time was frowned upon, hence the derogatory term "ricers".
A huge reason why aesthetically "clean" sports cars from that period are highly sought after nowadays.
100%. The rattly hollow bracelet, aluminum bezel insert, etc are all part of the vintage tooly charm that the SKX is obviously going for.
I bought one SKX 009J from ebay brand new for 269€ in 2020 and the cool thing is that looking to the serial number it seems to be that the watch was made in the last month of manufacture date in 2019 before they discontinued it. That's a nice thing.👌
Jody , happy new year to you and thank you for all your generosity and superb work all year. I feel like I spent it with you!
That mod with the Squale handset looked fantastic!
Have an SKX 007,009. Love them both
I had and modded over a dozen SKXs a few years back (the 171 dial is my favorite).
Am I crazy? Probably! Do I care? Not a bit!
Well, I bought an SKX007J with Strapcode Jubilee bracelet. It's class, so yeah, we're both mental!!
I'd go with Citizen Promaster instead (either Eco or automatic) of SKX. No misaligned bezels and better QC.
Agree bought the Citizens promaster absolutely love it 🎄
Crafter blue make a lovely strap for the 007
My 013 came in in March this year, modded ( I would prefer to say ‚pimped‘) with NH 36, flat sapphire ( no coating), fully lumed bezel insert in red/blue, signed crown and Strapcode jubilee.
Love the channel . i purchased a SKX and few other Seikos , could you review the Seiko SKA7 89P1 and the Seiko SNE393P2 Solar ?
Lol I got the Seiko SKX013 for Christmas from my wife (after, ahem, strong encouragement). I wanted one before they became too expensive or disappeared altogether.
I just bought mine mid december 2020 at a very reasonable price from creation watches ;-) I also bought the J-model.
I've the snk803 (just a different color), I'm using it every day since 3 years now, no problems at all. What's up with yours?
A video on the SKX is always welcome 😀. Happy New Year, Jody!
Nice move Jody, great addition to your collection.
Regarding the 009, a movement upgrade is always welcome, but come back to the Pepsi bezel, as God intended.

or you know... just get an Islander "SKX" that already has the most important mods, and add your own finishing touches...

Just picked up an SKX011J1.. ever had one of those Jody?
Had a couple over the years(one stock, one modded) , traded up to Turtle as soon as they came out (a much better watch in every way imho) & replaced that for a new 6r35 Sumo for Xmas 😍👏🏻
Can't say I feel any nostalgic affection for the SKX's, but clearly those old Seikos planted the seeds..
Hey Jody, have a look at a circular brushed steel bezel insert for the 009, and stay with flat sapphire, less flecto.
Never heard a pepsi bezel called cheezy. I think its charming
I think they look don’t look good but “cheesy” isn’t how I’d demean them.
I bought 3 brand new....Sold 2 and 1's a keeper!
I bought a new 009 the other day! Absolutely love it! Class watch and one is like to keep for ever ❤️
I picked up an SKX009J and an 013k this summer, I really like the 009, it gets a lot of wrist time, wearing it right now in fact on navy blue NATO.
