I own both of these watches. The new one is the blue with Oyster style bracelet. I love the manual wind and hacking of the new Seiko with the nh35a movement. So much easier to keep it going in watch drawer by just giving it a few winds each day. The drilled lug holes make strap changing a breeze. Also, despite specs, I find power reserve on new style longer. Wish we still had the lume pip on the bezel. I just bought the new Seiko 5 and the serial number on the rear reads 574248. As per Seiko nomenclature, this means the watch was manufactured in either 2005 or 2015. However, this model was released only in 2019. Will anyone please explain? Thanks.
Dunno why they ditched the Jubilee... Its what made the SKX look retro cool. Also not sure why they put applied markers, but no border around the Day/Date window.
I own both watches , but you have to realize not everyone goes diving. Jeeze people crying over nothing because their not even divers. Both watches are great. Thank you for another great video and keep up the great work 👍.
The new Seiko 5 is great (I have exactly that green face model in the video). I don't dive, so couldn't care less about 200m water resistance, and screw-down crowns are frankly annoying, when adjusting date, time, etc, then having to check it is screwed down right every time. If you dive, great, you need it, otherwise, it's better without it. I don't get the hate for the strap. On wrist, it is super-comfortable and has no rattle whatsoever. I am sitting here writing this with the watch on my wrist and just checked this! Also all for all the people that say, I got a micro-brand watch, it has a sapphire face, better value than a Seiko etc etc. These watches generally have no design sense, are completely bland and derivative for the most part. The beautiful design is what you are paying for with your "overpriced" Seiko.
To me, the newer version is the better everyday watch. Cleaner looking dial with applied indices, exhibition caseback, push/pull crown (which, to me, is better when you change watches on a regular basis and don't dive with them), drilled lugs, various colors, straps etc to choose from, hacking and hand winding, etc. If you dive and use a watch while doing it, go for an ISO certified piece. But I wouldn't recomend a SKX either way, with the current prices. Go for a Citizen Promaster for example. If you are on the other 99% of people who don't dive and couldn't care less if your watch has 100 or 200meters of WR, and just want a great everyday watch with the divers style, get the Seiko 5. Shop around, don't get them at MSRP though. Or a Ray 2, a Kamasu, a Promaster, etc. Just forget the SKX, it stopped making sense years ago. Don0t get me wrong, it was and still is a great watch (if you happen to have got it for a fair price back in the day). But non hacking, no hand wind. It's more heritage and fan-boying than anything at this point. Even when it was readily available, you'd be better served with a Ray 2 or Promaster IMO.

Seiko just want to rip us more. $300 dollar for a Seiko 5 is a bit steep. And lovable model like Monster, turtle, sumo, alpanist is getting more expensive. Put a "X" logo, labelled it as limited edition, sell it for a premium.
I think Seiko will F up the "5" range. I see youtube filled up with these replaced SKX watch reviews. Same watch in different colors and straps made to look like "street" "sports" "suit" etc. What about the other classy 5 designs?. For eg SNZJ53, which is my daily watch.
I have one and as I can say the quality really suck, the steel that use on that watch is a very low quality than my original skx my old seiko 5 is better than that sharky skx
I have never been personally acquainted with a professional diver, and 5 score years I have upon my back, so I don't think the dive watch features will be of much practical significance to 999 / 1000, though no doubt an extra 10 ATM of ISO certified water worthiness never hurts. What is a significant difference for 999 /1000 people is the hacking/winding movement. For me the only downside of the new Sx5s are the metal surrounds of the indexes -- I like the less civilized but more charming markers on the old SKX -- those give it most of it's character, IMHO.
The nh36 (4r36) is essentially an upgraded 7s26 with hacking and hand winding, they are the same quality and build, most parts are even interchangeable, they’ll weight basically the same especially with similarities in cases and bezels
@@billyhendry8369 Thank-you , and would you know if the 4r36 system will remain more accuratly in time , or will the watch still advance 1 minute per week ?
cyril akaboozoo I do mods where I replace watches with 7s26 to nh36 for hacking and hindwinding so I got a bit of experience with both, and they have about the same +/- variation. With mechanical movements, the +/- will never be consistent due to their nature especially with 2 different movements. I’ve got 3 nh36 watches, ones running -3 per day, one running +5 a day and one is regulated to about +0,5 a day. 2 nh36 will not run the same +/- even if bought together from the same factory unless regulated. If you’d like them to run close to 0, you could try regulating yourself if you’re brave, it’s not that hard. Or you could take it to a watch shop where they’ll regulate it for cheap. That said I’ve had really good luck with stock 7s26s from seiko and nh36 of ebay and none should be more than +/- 10s a day out of the box Edit: to clear it up, the nh36 is the same as 4r36. Because 7s26 watches have 4 o’clock crowns, when I mod them with nh36 (3 o’clock movement) and change the day wheel to the 4 o’clock one, the nh36 becomes the (4)r36
5kx line has nothing to do with the original skx..and I'm not talking about the specs, but also about the design, the dial etc. Seiko skx is a very good investment. You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years...if you can find one of course. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since was produced from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectible. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx in the next years. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more...they were already sold... Wait 5 years from now...people will be able to trade a nos skx..for a Rolex. Why? Because Rolex is still produced...while Skx is no longer produced and has become a classic neo-vintage tool.
I have mixed feelings on these. Part of me likes them but the other part likes the 007 and 009 better. If you can find them under $200 I think its worth getting
When you measuring lug to lug you measure in 2 different positions on the Calipersyou measure the first watch closer to the tip of the calipera then the second watch farther back....the calipers width is smaller at the back than from the front.....your measurements are not accurate.
I don’t know how to swim anyways and our clubhouse pool is only 5.5 feet deep so 100meters -330 ft is way more than enough for my needs. Seiko 5 sports for me!
In terms of being a diver (which i agree is a BIGGGGG part of the skx's appeal), yes. Although that 4r36 (with a screwdown crown though) would be a nice replacement for the 7s26 if it should ever die.
Just get an Orient Kamasu as an SKX replacement plus benefits. It has sapphire, 20 bar WR, screw down crown, hand winding and hacking. Winning! I have it in red and it is amazing. Meanwhile I put my new 5KX on a rally-style rollerball bracelet from Strapcode which takes it to a porn-level of cool!
20 yrs they’ve been making the skx, there’s millions of the things knocking about , 2 seiko make at least 2 other iso certified divers , 98 percent of owners don’t dive , only on the sofa , or desk ,, the only bad moan about seiko I have is why they can’t get the QC , of miss aligned bezels and chapter rings , not even cheap watches do this ,, appalling for such a big company that demand a decent price,, if people returned them and ask for replacements when bought new ,,,,guess seiko would soon address cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Fabian Dee Most people still want to feel comfortable swimming With it on… Check out what 100 meter water resistance without a screw down crown actually means… It’s not what I thought, and it’s not what you think. Besides, who wants to pay more for less?
99% of people wearing dive watches don't even dive so not being 200m dive certified isn't an issue for most of the majority. I have a SKX007, Samurai (black waffle face) and I just bought the Seiko 5 blue SPORT WATCH.... It is a sport watch with dive style. If you go to Seiko website, they never ever call it a dive watch. They literally call it a sport watch. The SKX has pros over the Seiko 5 but the Seiko 5 has plenty of pros over the SKX as well.
no iso diver. just a cheap fancy looking version the skx, now the affordable diver is gone and if you want one you have to go 150$ more. There are many other real dive watches with iso and cheaper than the Seiko 5, Seiko 5 is just a watch with nice colors. period. if you like that well go for it. ill try citizen, scurfa or something else for my new diver.
seiko 5 : 1. no lume dot. 2. no legendary "5" logo - now get a shitty superman logo. 3. 100$ more expensive, getting a real diver : pay even more for prospex. 4. no 200m. 5. no screwdown crown. congrats, seiko, you pissed off the whole community. please go to hell.

The 5KX stinks. Check out long island watch if you want to new and improved SKX. It’s the watch that psycho should’ve released if they cared about their customer base. I’ve purchased two from Mark at long island watch. Sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert,Milled class, Solid bracelet and end links, And has a screw down Crown and 200 m water resistance...Lots of cool choices...It’s not an Homage if the watch doesn’t exists...And the SKX is dead.
Good review, thanks. I agree that Seiko got this wrong but perhaps they'll sell bucket loads! All fool the buyers! Seems to be a pimped, de-spec'd, overpriced version of 20 yr old SKX; still bit too bulky, crap bracelets and no sapphire. I think it ought to be easy for Seiko to produce a new 'Sub-killer' Diver at 40mm, 4R35, sapphire, fantastic lume, 300mWR, similar face, decent bracelet (or rubber for $50 less?, ask Miltat if don't know), better bezel with ceramic, for circa $350. See Baby Tuna! Priced right, sell by the shed load for next 10 yrs. But what do I know?! Potential customers out there waiting, cash in hand...
Seiko is dead to me☠️ RIP SEIKO😔 -since I never got along with the turtle, monster, sports5 line.. the only watch I like that Seiko makes/made is the iconic skx007😍 , so I recently bought 2more. I will not be without a new skx007 with papers for the rest of my life😂💙🍻🌿🇱🇷✝️
Let’s be honest here, are you really gonna go diving in it? Probably not, and if you are, you’re one of the few that are. For the average person, this new one is better, because it has cosmetic upgrades (like the applied hour markers and see-through back) and a better movement with manual winding + hacking, with the only downside being the loss of water resistance that most people won’t even need.
Won’t be buying one of these… Not at any price…Seiko Turned their most iconic watch of all time into ‘hot garbage’...It’s a ‘dive style’ fashion watch now...And they upped the price????I’m disappointed enough that I decided not to purchase two other Seiko watches this year... I picked up that Orient Kamasu, And a Zelos swordfish...Both real dive watches with sapphire crystals and better specs all the way around for about the same price...

@@JohnBuckmaster-sw3wm you you will recomend get the 5 instead skx?
I think Seiko will F up the "5" range. I see youtube filled up with these replaced SKX watch reviews. Same watch in different colors and straps made to look like "street" "sports" "suit" etc. What about the other classy 5 designs?. For eg SNZJ53, which is my daily watch.
Can we mod the bezel insert of this one?
Doms Molina , according to DLW watches. The bezel inserts can be replaced.
this same skx but only difference movement
Heimdallr has an SKX homage with NH36A, sapphire crystal, and screw down crown for $150.
Adios Seiko.
Good point.

Nice video I think I’ll wait to purchase one of these hopefully they’ll go down to $150
William Vanderstarre Don’t wait for one of these… Check out the Orient Komatsu...It’s a real watch that’s fashionable...Not a dive style fashion watch
Do they weight the same , sometimes the mecanism quality makes a difference !
That said I’ve had really good luck with stock 7s26s from seiko and nh36 of ebay and none should be more than +/- 10s a day out of the box
Edit: to clear it up, the nh36 is the same as 4r36. Because 7s26 watches have 4 o’clock crowns, when I mod them with nh36 (3 o’clock movement) and change the day wheel to the 4 o’clock one, the nh36 becomes the (4)r36
Great review! Great watches!👍🏾
I wish I could find a seiko that resembled the oyster quartz Rolex from the 70s with the integrated flat band it had
Not seiko but Timex Q! Dive bezel though.
I have mixed feelings on these. Part of me likes them but the other part likes the 007 and 009 better. If you can find them under $200 I think its worth getting
When the buzz is over I believe prices will go down. They are actually right now more affordable in retail.
Best regards,
Anders
I don't see what's wrong with the jubelee of the SKX , I have one an I find it so much confortable, I didn'y try any other jubelee bracelet though
When you measuring lug to lug you measure in 2 different positions on the Calipersyou measure the first watch closer to the tip of the calipera then the second watch farther back....the calipers width is smaller at the back than from the front.....your measurements are not accurate.
yea. This is disappointed to see
Interesting comparison video - thanks. I think I'll try to get hold of one of the last SKX0013s and mod it, rather than getting the new 5.
You lost the dive ISO the moment you mod your SKX tho.
Great video!!
You forgot a huge difference - the movement.

how many dive over 100m? 100m is enough for me. I have this watch and it is very good and accurate.
I don’t know how to swim anyways and our clubhouse pool is only 5.5 feet deep so 100meters -330 ft is way more than enough for my needs. Seiko 5 sports for me!
😂👍🏻
I think they purpously didnt make it 200m water resistant, otherwise it would make the Tuna obsolete
A big help thx sir.
Love the look of the new Seiko 5 but being a owner of the skx009 there’s no comparison the skx009 is a much much better watch.
In terms of being a diver (which i agree is a BIGGGGG part of the skx's appeal), yes. Although that 4r36 (with a screwdown crown though) would be a nice replacement for the 7s26 if it should ever die.
I'll definetly try to get a skx 007
This is japan or china make?
Great review. Bu I like the bracelet😀
SKX upgraded with NH36 movement is of very big deal , a rated divers 200m while that sports not a dive watch but the price even much higher.
No nh35 thiugh
I want one. But I feel the new Seiko 5 is like a good counterfeit that they didn't get quite right.
William o that makes ZERO sense. Literally.
Ide get one if they made it with GMT and a screw down crown
20 yrs they’ve been making the skx, there’s millions of the things knocking about , 2 seiko make at least 2 other iso certified divers , 98 percent of owners don’t dive , only on the sofa , or desk ,, the only bad moan about seiko I have is why they can’t get the QC , of miss aligned bezels and chapter rings , not even cheap watches do this ,, appalling for such a big company that demand a decent price,, if people returned them and ask for replacements when bought new ,,,,guess seiko would soon address cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
its a desk diving watch then lol which is pmuch what most ppl wearing diving watches use them for, at least its more honest i guess heh
Fabian Dee Most people still want to feel comfortable swimming With it on… Check out what 100 meter water resistance without a screw down crown actually means… It’s not what I thought, and it’s not what you think. Besides, who wants to pay more for less?
I have never seen a scuba diver wear a wrist watch
Lets admit most of us buying the watch will never go deep diving
There are many other real dive watches with iso and cheaper than the Seiko 5, Seiko 5 is just a watch with nice colors. period. if you like that well go for it. ill try citizen, scurfa or something else for my new diver.
seiko 5 :
1. no lume dot.
2. no legendary "5" logo - now get a shitty superman logo.
3. 100$ more expensive, getting a real diver : pay even more for prospex.
4. no 200m.
5. no screwdown crown.
congrats, seiko, you pissed off the whole community. please go to hell.
raedchen1 you should put go to hell as point 6) because it is true
skx all the way
I closed the video at screw down crown .. I’m sorry I’m so disappointed.. I can live without iso certification... but screw down crown is a must for me .. again .. I’m so disappointed and sad
Seiko is dead to me☠️
RIP SEIKO😔 -since I never got along with the turtle, monster, sports5 line.. the only watch I like that Seiko makes/made is the iconic skx007😍 , so I recently bought 2more. I will not be without a new skx007 with papers for the rest of my life😂💙🍻🌿🇱🇷✝️
You're so good 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
danish?
Yes sir 🇩🇰
I feel that the SKX will be a future classic with value and demand going up, the 5 not so much.
And the winner is.........
Every watch company that completes with seiko. Lol

Seiko got this wrong. The only thing this is better than the SKX is the hand winding ,otherwise SKX lots better.
@@squidwardstesticles5914 Good point but when a model is replaced it's expected to be better. In this case I don't think so.
@@squidwardstesticles5914 I agree with you. The only thing that makes it worse is the price. It should not surpass $199.
Venus Dee yeah, I can’t argue with that one.
Too expensive
Won’t be buying one of these… Not at any price…Seiko Turned their most iconic watch of all time into ‘hot garbage’...It’s a ‘dive style’ fashion watch now...And they upped the price????I’m disappointed enough that I decided not to purchase two other Seiko watches this year... I picked up that Orient Kamasu, And a Zelos swordfish...Both real dive watches with sapphire crystals and better specs all the way around for about the same price...
