I still think it's crazy how Brian McCann was in this game. Bet he never imagined he'd win a World Series with the Astros twelve years after hitting that homer off of them.
Yeah well it would have pretty much been an impossible thing for him to guess that he would win the American League pennant and then the World Series with the astros , all things considered .
I will never forget this game. Happened on my 9th birthday and I watched the entire game. Such an emotional game! And on that same day the Cowboys actually beat the Eagles, so I was riding that high as well.
GO STROS!! I finally found another astros fan! Tonight I'm going to the game to see Berkman and Oswalt retire!!!!!!! Just thought i should watch this before I go
I'm still here. Still love my Astros. Watching this gives me something to be proud of. Don't get me wrong, Altuve.. Springer.. Yeah. I can't wait to see what the future holds. Do I wish he never sold the team? Yes. This team was solid. I remember watching this when I was about 8 or 9 and my dad going insane when burke hit that homer. Now he doesn't even bother with the team.. But I'm loyal. 'Stros for life
I was at this game with my dad and little brother. I remember my brother and I wanting to leave in the 13th inning and my dad convinced us to stay, so glad we did LOL two for the price of one. What a great memory. My dad and I watched the Astros latest 18 inning win 17 years later tonight. Go stros!!

2005 was the Braves first season without Smoltz as their closer. And he was missed in this game 4 coming out of the bullpen Braves got Farnsworth in a trade on July 31 from the Tigers, and he did great as the Braves closer in August and September, with 10 saves and an ERA of 1.98 with the Braves in those two months. What a nightmare game for Farnsworth this was
Fun fact today is October 15 2022 the Astros are in 18 innings in Seattle and Jeremy Peña the rookie just hit a BOMB solo homer in to deep center field when I was watching Chris Burke hit a game winning walk home run just thought y’all should know that. Let’s go Astros
Greatest game Ever!! When Chris Burke hit that walk off home run, my whole neighborhood was going nuts ! We Recorded the whole game and even saved the next days NewsPaper
I was at this game. I remember I lived in San Antonio at the time because I went to UTSA. I was with a friend and we had to get back early the next morning. We were gonna leave in the 8th, but we said, "Let's just stay and see what happens." The rest is history!
I remember this game like it was yesterday! My dad, younger brother and I watched the game together! (a whole family of Astro fans!) This was one of the greatest playoff games ever. So many dramatic moments and unlikely heroes! Ausmus with a bottom of 9th inning home run to tie, Clemens in relief, and Burke with the walk off homer in the 18th. Astro history is full of close but no cigar moments! So many times we were 1 win away from advancing, but could not get it done! Here, they did! Maybe 2017 will be the Stros year!
I remember watching this at home. I think it started at noon and didn't end until the evening. Most of the NFL games that Sunday started and ended during the course of this game.
Me and my Mom were at this game and by like the 12th inning I was just saying "Mom, we gotta go home." because I was getting restless but Mom did not want to miss a thing, and we stayed the whole game which I laugh about looking back on it but it was a fun and loooong game.
You mean, "My mom and I were at this game." You see, if you were to remove the "and my mom" portion of your sentence, it would read like this..."Me were at this game." Instead of, "I were at this game" or "I was at this game."
Johnson was fuming in the Braves' dugout when Burke hit that homer. In the back of his mind, he knew that Fernandez should've never tried to make that throw from deep right field in the 11th. He missed the cutoff man. Granted, the Astros failed to capitalize on that mistake, but you just knew that Johnson was still dwelling on it. So many miscues by Atlanta, but in the end, Holmes, Schwarzlotz, and Cavilles still had a great season that year...nothing to be ashamed of. That's for sure!!!
I remember this game well. Was a freshman in high school and I was at a barbeque. So at noon we start watching, eat lunch and the game continues. Somebody had to leave to go buy more barbeque for dinner! They didn't expect to have to feed everyone there (around 35 ppl) twice! Haha it was a great day, historic, and I met a future ex girlfriend there. 18 innings of the greatest astros game ever, meeting a beautiful girl, hot dogs/burgers/brisket/sausage and great friends... what more could you ask for?
I was at this game! I wanted to leave but glad my homegirl said no. It was so sweet to finally break the tomahawk curse. 😄 Now 16 years later, Astros vs. Braves World Series....
That was some brutal game 4 for the Braves, and especially how it relates to how their regular season went when it came to grand-slams Kyle Farnsworth in this game 4 giving up the grand slam in the bottom of the 8th to Berkman, and then the game tying solo home run to Ausmus in the bottom of the 9th inning. Ouch Farnsworth, reminding you of Wholers back in the 1996 World Series game 4. Farnsworth went 10-for-10 in save opportunities in the last two months of the regular season from the Braves when the Braves acquired him in a trade from the Tigers in late July, so today was his first blown save as a member of the Braves, OUCH. Adam LaRoche hit a grand slam in this game 4, but the Braves still lost. LaRoche also hit a huge 3-run-home-run in Houston last 2004 Division Series (the difference being that the Braves won that game 4 in Houston in 2004). Adam LaRoche hit two grand slams in 2005 (his first two career grand slams), and both times the Braves lost that game, because a player from the other team also hit a grand slam: 1) May-13-2005, when LaRoche hit a grand slam against the Dodgers in the top of the 8th inning, but then Milton Bradley answered with a grand slam of his own in the bottom of the 8th inning, and the Dodgers won; 2) and now in this game 4, when LaRoche hit a grand slam against the Astros, but then Lance Berkman answered with a grand slam of his own, and then the Astros won. People seem to forget including the Astro's fans that this is also a historic moment in baseball. This is the game that ended the braves historic run of fifteen consecutive divisions championships. They wouldn't be back in the playoffs until 2010 against the giants I think or was that 2011? Anyways there will never be a streak like that again. It was something special for the braves during that period. When the streak started I was like six back in 1991. When it ended in 2005 I was just coming out of my high school days and into college. Amazing.
Batman Why would Astros fans give a flying crap about what this game did to the Braves' run? It was a great moment in Astros history. Might have sucked for the Braves, but oh the fuck well it was 10 years ago. Can't believe it's been that long.
***** I wasn't saying that. Just saying there are more historic moments in this game besides the Astro's winning. It wasn't anything rude against the Astro's fans calm your chill pill
Batman You chill bro, no hate intended. I get what you were saying it was a historic moment in braves' history.. I was just saying it was a historic moment in astros' history too. it's all good. Like I said no hate intended.
***** hey your the one that is loosing your edge. You were the one who commented me saying who gives a flying crap. I just stated my opinion. I was saying that both teams fans should respect what happened here for both teams.
I was 9 when this game happened. Words cannot describe the emotion of this game if you were there like I was. That Grand Slam by Berkman led me to believe that a comeback was imminent and Ausmus's HR in the 9th hellped that. By the 15th inning I was extremely tired of waiting for something to happen and once Burke hit that HR the stadium was as loud as a College Football Stadium on Saturday! By far the most memorable game I've ever seen and cannot wait for the Oswalt-Berkman retiring game tonight!
Yeah, I was 16 in 2005. Lived in Houston my whole life, always been a baseball fan but in the past 6 years I have really started to grow tired of the 'stros... watching stuff like this makes me miss these days haha.
I love watching this. It just sucks how we were so close to winning the world series yea we got swept but we got there. We should've won it all cause we had such a great season. But always a fan GO STROS GO!
I remember as a kid watching this thinking "Will this game EVER end?" I didn't realize until my dad, who grew up in Texas, explaining it was the longest playoff game ever.
Joey Devine was the pitcher that gave up the walk-off-home-run in the 18th inning. Devine was a rookie in 2005, and in his first two games of his career this season, he allowed a grand-slam in each of those 2 games. It was a rough rookie season for him. Imagine if it was Clemens who had hit the walk off home run in the bottom of the 18th inning when he lead off the inning hitting
If you watch the ticker at the bottom of the screen - this game started at the same time as that day's early NFL games and by the time it ended the late NFL games were late in the fourth quarter.
Berkman, Ausmus, Clemens, and Burke were the heros of the game...well two games, 18 innings. Astros had awesome team chemistry in 2005 and get past the Red Birds in the NLCS to advance to their 1st World Series vs White Sox. To this day it's still hard to believe that they got swept by Chicago. All games were so close and very competitive but no cigar until 12 years later. Stros Fan 4Life
This game proved to be the last a decade and a half of dominance for the Atlanta Braves from 1991-2005 in which they didn't make the MLB playoffs again till 2010 until Bobby Cox retired that year.
Anyone else miss these unis of the astros as a kid they were my fav team growin up cause mainly of the brick red like unis personally these were my favorite missin them to play in the NL Central and wish maybe then they couldve evened out the conferences instead with like a vegas or montreal expansion team in the AL
I dont know, the Astros had a 4-2 lead in the 7th iinning of game 2, and a 4-0 lead in the 5th inning of game 3, plus they tied the game 3 times in game 1 (but never took the lead). So timely hitting wasnt a problem for the 'stros, however their offense did die in game 4. i think the problem was the 'stros pitching, the Sox were hitting everything, even cy young himself wouldve been knocked around, But as joe buck said "the Astros couldve won any one of those 4 games", i agree, good series!
That was a fun game to watch. I was at home watching. Wish I would have been there. But I don't live in Texas no more. But I remember many great games and comebacks when I saw games in the Astrodome. when I was 7 going to games in the Dome watching the likes of Nolan Ryan, Billy Doran, , Jose Cruz etc then watching the emergence of Biggio and Bagwell . Would love to see something like that again. Finally got to see them go to World Series in 2005. Now like to see them win one.
Especially the Texas Rangers. They haven't recovered since losing Game 6 to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 World Series. Didn't even show up for Game 7, collapse and stumbled twice out of the playoffs in the Wild Card game. OUCH!
I was at this game and had such bad seats in the upper level 3rd base side I couldn't even see the Burke HR actually land in the Crawford boxes. I just knew it was over when everyone started yelling their faces off. What a fun season that was.
elegate87 While it's not likely to happen this year they are still in 1st in their division, if that means anything :) Hell Correa hasn't even been called up yet.
Thank you. Right now I am just enjoying the moment and coming to terms with the realization that it happened because I was just so shocked that my Red Sox pulled this off with such low expectations. It's a good moment right now. I tip my hat to John Farrell, Ben Cherington, and all the players as well as the whole front office. I really enjoyed this 2013 season. Hopefully they can do the same thing in 2014 which will be so much more meaningful because it would be 10 years from 2004.
I guarantee if you were to tell him at this particular time that 12 years later he was gonna win a World Series in the American League for the Astros, he’d be dumbfounded.
If I was Cox in that 8th inning Smoltz would have pitched to Berkman, even if he was the scheduled starter for Game 5, but you need your best guy pitching in that spot
Very true. The Yankees and Red Sox are more alike than we fans realize. The only difference is the Yankees came out on top more often in the past and the Red Sox have been coming out on top in recent years.
Little did we know Brian McCann would end up an Astro and win the WS with us.....the memories Go Astros also Beltran would come to his senses and return....😂man i love Baseball
I'm an astros fan too. They're building up their farm system like crazy. Next year we will be a lot better. 2015 is when we should really start seeing it turn up though. Next few years will be much more promising.
guys i have a question... I'm trying to find the name of a certain Astros pitcher that they used to bring in at the last inning or so, around 2003-2004...? they would play an intro theme when he'd come out that featured clips of him throwing fast balls with lightning coming out... and the crowd would go nuts. anyone know?
That was Brad Lidge, when he was at his peak in 04 and 05 he used Drowning Pool’s ‘The Game as his walk on music and a custom video of him striking guys out, it was so cool.
I was only 9 years old but I still remember watching this game and thinking it would never end...............................Its still one of the most heartbreaking games for me as a Braves fan
When I was a teenager I saw a 22 inning regular season game played In the Astrodome. I belive Stros were playing the Dodgers. Houston finally won it. It was after 1 am lol if memory serves. Been so many years ago.
Astros made the 2005 postseason after being down 15 games under .500 at one point in the 2005 season. Only one team in MLB history has made the postseason after being down 15+ games under .500 (1914 Boston Braves, they swept the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. Boston Braves were 16 games under .500 at one point in 1914).
See? You just cant get a marathon like this where the winning pitcher ends up having to hit twice deep in extra innings in an American League game. This is why I will forever miss the National League.
I was working 16 hour shifts and working overnight. An went to this day game after working 16 straight hours . I couldn't stay awake any longer and trust me I am a fan.
The Braves surely could have picked someone better than Farnsworth to pitch in the high leverage situations, how he was not out of the game when Berkman came up in the 8th I do not understand
I'd go with the Seattle Mariners and I'll tell you why. They are like the Oakland A's they went from a successful team in 90's-2000's breaking records, and winning 116 games in 2001 and going toe to toe with the dynasty Yankees to going flat for more than a decade and becoming the AL doormat. It would be a great story to see them shock the baseball world by making the playoffs and winning the world series. I agree the Indians just might win one first. They were 1 game back behind the Tigers.
I still think it's crazy how Brian McCann was in this game. Bet he never imagined he'd win a World Series with the Astros twelve years after hitting that homer off of them.

I remember this vividly even though I was only 8 at the time, it's my fondest live sports memory to this day. Go 'Stros!
I was 12 when this occured.
If you watch the ticker at the bottom of the screen - this game started at the same time as that day's early NFL games and by the time it ended the late NFL games were late in the fourth quarter.
And?!?...
+TheRanhughes It was really long.
Neil D well okay then.
Who's watching this after game 3 of the 2018 World Series
Berkman, Ausmus, Clemens, and Burke were the heros of the game...well two games, 18 innings. Astros had awesome team chemistry in 2005 and get past the Red Birds in the NLCS to advance to their 1st World Series vs White Sox. To this day it's still hard to believe that they got swept by Chicago. All games were so close and very competitive but no cigar until 12 years later. Stros Fan 4Life
9 years ago. Wow. I was a junior in high school.

What most people are here for.
God I miss those days... Seems so long ago
Running Wild Well you got your wish! Now let’s go ‘Stros 2019!!!
I think I'll be long dead before I see the Astros win a World Series, come one let it happen at LEAST once in my life time!
I really hope you are right! I would love to see it!!!!
elegate87 While it's not likely to happen this year they are still in 1st in their division, if that means anything :) Hell Correa hasn't even been called up yet.
Astros looking good 1st place in the American west.
Hells yeah they are :)
It's happening this month!
The 'Stros got ripped of in the World Series when Selig wouldn't let them close the roof.
Il-Sung Kim selig was an atrocity to mlb. He never deserved the title of commissioner.
2022 Jeremy Pena in the TOP of the 18th in Seattle!
2022 WS CHAMPIONS HOUSTON ASTROS!
Interesting that Brian McCann played in this game with the Braves
I guarantee if you were to tell him at this particular time that 12 years later he was gonna win a World Series in the American League for the Astros, he’d be dumbfounded.
@@cmurphy0707 I think anybody would have been
Why is that interesting? McCann is much more known as a brave than an Astro lmao
Was at this game for my 9th birthday. Left in the 13th. Greatest game in history!
Well, that's what you get for leaving early.
it was for my birthday party. parents wanted to pickup their kids... other commitments... didn't work out for everybody. i for sure wanted to stay!
The Wild & The Innocent Well okay then. I hope everyone had a great time at your 9th birthday party.
Amazing and Excellent Called by Dave O'Brien. 4:48:14
Ahh. Old MMP! I miss you!
Little did we know Brian McCann would end up an Astro and win the WS with us.....the memories Go Astros also Beltran would come to his senses and return....😂man i love Baseball
I heard Astros, and Playoffs, I think my brain exploded at that point.
They have made the first round quite a few times now, just rarely made it past.
I know XD. I actually watched this game live in 2005.
Good one.
Z ACK really dude we are the best team right now!
It must be really exploding now that we're World Champions!!!
I really hope this year (2017) is the year the Stros win it all!
Your wish was reality's command. ;)
Farm system is super strong, young pitchers starting to come up and perform. We're on the right track!
Brad Ausmus was such a smart player! I could see him managing the astros if AJ Hinch messes up
Antonyo337 Has always been my wish!
You got three of the four right. The St. Louis Cardinals are in the final four instead of the underachieving Atlanta Braves.
I'm an astros fan too. They're building up their farm system like crazy. Next year we will be a lot better. 2015 is when we should really start seeing it turn up though. Next few years will be much more promising.
Nice prediction on the 2015 part, you were spot on for the real improvement in the team. Well done!
Red Sox, Dodgers, Tigers, Braves clearly are the best teams in baseball right now.
guys i have a question... I'm trying to find the name of a certain Astros pitcher that they used to bring in at the last inning or so, around 2003-2004...? they would play an intro theme when he'd come out that featured clips of him throwing fast balls with lightning coming out... and the crowd would go nuts. anyone know?
Brad Lidge
That was Brad Lidge, when he was at his peak in 04 and 05 he used Drowning Pool’s ‘The Game as his walk on music and a custom video of him striking guys out, it was so cool.
the braves could have won at least 2 other world series instead of just one in 95
I remember watching this game as a kid. I was in 5th grade.
I was only 9 years old but I still remember watching this game and thinking it would never end...............................Its still one of the most heartbreaking games for me as a Braves fan
Fuck the Braves 🖕
2:21:30
The set up of the hero: Ausomeous
I didnt know you liked baseball. :D
Brandon Backe warming up a bat in the ninth. 2hr 18min "our reports tell us that is Ausmus's bat" me: Oh My God
A Bad Braves moment happened in Houston and a Great Braves moment happened as well.
If there would have been a game 5, it was gonna be Pettite vs Smoltz in a 1996 game 5 World Series rematch in Atlanta
Just sitting and chilling in the beaches in the Bahamas and in Cancun after a season punching above their weight, but also coming up short.
i really remember thinking the game was over with ausmus batting in the 9th. thinking now we have to steal one in atlanta..
See? You just cant get a marathon like this where the winning pitcher ends up having to hit twice deep in extra innings in an American League game. This is why I will forever miss the National League.
The NL still exists...?
Mega Hatena Yes but the Astros aren't in it :(
Both DeVine and Burke would both be out of baseball in a few years.
Congrats on the Red Sox winning their eighth World Championship, fourth most overall in MLB history King Alejandro aka MaxxRedSox.
My wife and I were there. We are big braves fans. We left in the 9th innings lol
I was working 16 hour shifts and working overnight. An went to this day game after working 16 straight hours . I couldn't stay awake any longer and trust me I am a fan.
Whatever
Alex Bentley You wouldn't understand because you have no job
If you leave before any game ends, let alone a playoff game, then you are in no position to call yourself a fan.
Job or no job what idiot leaves a playoff game way before it ends!
Go Astros !
The Braves surely could have picked someone better than Farnsworth to pitch in the high leverage situations, how he was not out of the game when Berkman came up in the 8th I do not understand
Bobby Cox was a great manager but he wasnt very good at managing his bullpens
Plays I love to watch:
9:03 - 41:37
46:45 - 1:23:07
1:28:00 - 2:59:30
3:04:42 - 3:14:40
3:34:15 - 3:46:31
4:01:33 - 4:16:26
4:21:50 - 4:29:24
4:36:13 - 4:50:32
Lol Brandon Backe was all pumped up after Ausmus hit that home run.
Working that Galveston voodoo on that bat. Lol
Especially Oakland. They really have been fighting for something the last 2 years.
I was 7 and was at this game, now im 17 almost 18 going into senior year... hahaha
what a game!!!!! chris the hero....yeah baby!!
Does this link not work anymore? I'm getting a playback error on my iPad
