man, when the astros were competitive like this, the games against the cardinals in the playoffs were electrifying. 2004 and 2005 nlcs were the best postseason series ever.
I was at every home game of this intense classic NLCS in StL, including the epic Edmonds extra inning walk off in G6 and of course this G7 pennant winner. There's nothing like being at a pennant winning game and seeing your team clinch the win to go to the World Series, especially a Game 7 clincher. I've been fortunate enough to witness 3 pennants won in person; 1987 vs SF, 2004 vs Hou, and 2013 vs LA. 87 and 04 both Game 7s. The intensity is out of this world. This was the best Cardinals team I ever saw in person, and probably the best since the 67-68 Cardinals. Its a shame that this special team somehow lost so badly to the Red Stockings, who admittedly were on a once in a lifetime roll. The Cards lost a back and forth G1 in the Series 9-8 I think it was, and had they held on to win that game I think the whole Series would have been different. And losing Carp for the WS didn't help. Great memories of some classic bball though. Pujols and Beltran were unreal in this NLCS.
Pujols certainly deserved the series MVP. Assists go to Jeff Kent and Morgan Ensberg for swinging at the first pitch in the 9th inning of Game 7 after Isringhausen went 3 innings, facing 13 batters, the night before.
Great game. Really a tremendous team effort by the Cardinals winning this game. Tony Womack played superbly while in obvious pain. Rolen and Pujols got some huge hits. They didn't win the World Series but this Cardinal team deserves props for playing good baseball.
they weren't even picked to win the division though! Having to rely on Jeff Suppan to outpitch Clemens worked here, but wouldn't have the vast majority of the time
1) Edmonds' memorable catch: 0:26:00 2) Pujols' game-tying single: 1:43:41 3) Rolen's 2-run lazer off Clemens: (seconds after the Pujols single) 4) Renteria gets Berkman: 2:09:00 5) Womack ignores back spasms, get first out in 9th: 2:15:40 6) And for the first time since 1987...: 2:17:40
Everybody talk about the 0-3 comeback by the Red Sox against the Yankees in 2004 and rigthly so, however everybody forget that amamazing series between the Astros and the Cardinals, 2004 is definitely a year to remember for Baseball fans.
I miss our great rivalry with the Astros in the NL Central. There never seemed to be any bad blood, especially after the joint tragedy in the death of Darryl Kile.
The Astros were my second favorite team next to the Cardinals. I didn't care that we were rivals. The power that both teams had made me love baseball as a kid growing up.
Was at the Cardinals/Astros game last night where they honored the 2004 Cardinals, so HAD to look this game up. Was living in the Houston area 2003-2009, so I remember the 2004 and 2005 NLCS VERY well. Needless to say, I'm glad the Astros are in the AL now!! :) I can root for them full heartedly.... except when they play the Cardinals. Obviously Pujols wasn't there, and Yadi is STILL a Cardinal (though he didn't play last night), but it was great to be there when they were presented. Shame Matheny wasn't there in general, but...not that surprising.
On the Ground to Second, Flips to first and, We're goin' to Boston Folks!!! We're join' to Boston!!! 2004 was the best year of my childhood. I was 10 years old when this happened.
Too bad we got swept by Those Damn Red Soxs The day will come when we will get Revenge on the Red Soxs in the World Series and will Avenge 2004 and 2013
The 04 and 05 NLCS's between the Cards and Astros was some amazing baseball. Fantastic rivalry between those 2 teams in the mid-2000s. It's a shame that the Astros have been a complete disaster since then, and are now in the American League
Then they became arguably the best team in the AL since 2017, winning a World Series & two more pennants. A shame about the sign stealing scandal though
Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds were all 3, 4 and 5 in MVP voting behind only Bonds and Adrian Beltre. The big 3 all topped 1.000 OPS as well and with Edmonds and Rolen all-time great defenders and Pujols emerging as a very good first baseman himself. Don't know of many big 3s like that. Shame Pujols and Rolen broke down in their early 30s.
Clemens had his best postseasons by far with the Yankees, but he was having a fine one here until he seemed to tire in the 6th. Impressive he was still throwing 94-95 at 42 years old.
To me, the 2004 Cardinals were the best team in franchise history. They just ran into the Red Sox who did something no other team in history has done, came back down 0-3 in the ALCS to their rivals, the Yankees. If it wasn't for them playing those 2004 Red Sox, after their comeback, they would've won it all against anyone.
@@alfredolopez5408 Bad luck and Roids. Ortiz, Ramirez and Clemens all known juicers, and probably more. If this were college football, their WS title is removed.
tubenachos for sure depending on how fast Kent was at second and Vizciano might have been pretty speedy too it would’ve been a 1 run double or a 2 run triple
Imagine what would have happened in '05 in Beltran stayed with the astros? Even though it was a sweep in the world series, they where pretty close games
Agree 100%. I thought FOX should have made Brennaman their lead baseball announcer years ago. I am actually fine with Buck on football because he puts more into it. I was hoping that with Tim McCarver retiring after this year that FOX would also make the move to Brennaman as their #1 baseball announcer as well, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Nowadays, As Astros fan for life, i miss the rivalry between these 2 teams, i think this Astros team gets overlooked because of the Astros of today but i still think they underachieved with this lineup, the cardinals have been to the World Series a few times in the last 20 years, winning 2, I was routing so hard for an Astros versus Red Sox World Series and it almost happened, I mean Clemens pitching against his old team as an Astro vs the Red Sox, and Bagwell was traded by the Red Sox to Houston, it just came up a few outs short of happening
Watching this is a little bittersweet for me because of how the Cardinals got humiliated in the WS. Also, knowing that we were going to lose Renteria, Womack and Matheny during the offseason. It's interesting that Brenley keeps calling Clemens a "future Hall of Famer" when we all know now that the Rocket will never make it. Such a shame he had to taint a fine career with juicing.
He never would've been considered a HOF'r if he didn't use roids. He started using when his career started fizzling out in 1995. At that point he was considered a guy who had a great run, but couldn't reach that next plateau of consistency. Thus, he was traded away to Toronto and the rest is history...
Wrong. Clemens started in '98 when the Jays hired Brian McNamee and signed Jose Canseco, hence the infamous June party at Canseco's house. And he'd only use in the second halves of those '98, '00 and '01 season for stamina so it was subtle, which is why his body didn't change. His '97 season was better overall than his '98 one. The only difference is Clemens dominated the second half of '98 after struggling to start (compared to '97) while in '97 he fizzled out somewhat in August and September compared to the first 4 months. We know Clemens 2001 steroid cycle started in August thanks to McNamee, but Clemens was actually 15-1 and leading the league in strikeouts through July so in that case it didn't appear the roids helped as his ERA dropped a negligible amount. Like Bonds, he was EASILY a HOFer before steroids and should have been first ballot, especially when they put a bigger known juicer like Pudge Rodriguez in first ballot. Thankfully, it looks Clemens and Bonds now have a good chance of finally getting in the next few years, but it's already a bad joke they've been held out.
History should be factual. That's literally a made up narrative that lazy people jumped on when they saw Clemens began juicing in Toronto, but they miss the fact it was his second year in Toronto after the most dominant year of his career in '97. Except people usually choose '96 to point to his decline, which is problematic as Clemens tied his single game record with 20 strikeouts, led the league with 257 total and 9.5 per 9, was 2nd in hits per 9, 7th in ERA(top 5 in adjusted ERA+). That's actually an outstanding final season in Boston. He had a bit of a down year in '95, but that was one of the strike-shortened seasons and he was injured keeping him out until June and was still excellent with the exception of a horrible July, but he was outstanding in the shortened '94 season as well leading the league in hits per 9 and adjusted ERA+, finishing 2nd in strikeouts(both total and per 9) and normal ERA and 3rd in WHIP. So this alleged decline is an old myth that's long been debunked. Roger was outstanding from 1986 on. He had a few off years spread out over a long career, but never more than one in a row after breaking out in '86. His worst year was probably '93, which was a good 5 years before he first used steroids.
guys i have a question... I'm trying to find the name of a certain Astros pitcher that they used to bring in at the last inning or so, around 2003-2004...? they would play an intro theme when he'd come out that featured clips of him throwing fast balls with lightning coming out... and the crowd would go nuts. anyone know?
At 0:31:28, the statistics between the Cardinals and the Astros are identical from games 1 to 6: 3 wins, .246 batting avg., 29 runs, and 4.80 team ERA. That is rare in baseball.
Thought Scott Rolen solidified his Hall of Fame credentials with his bomb off of Roger Clemens. Time will tell. He certainly is deserving clutch offense and peerless defense.
The cardinals had Larry Walker (HoF) Albert Pujols (Probable HoF) and Scott Rollen (a guy with a career WAR at 70.2 for reference Derek Jeter finished with a WAR of 71.3)
Yes (and I really wish they won without cheating). They went through years of heartbreak after heartbreak (they just couldn't seem to frickin' make it to the World Series!). This might as well be considered the dark ages for them. They make it to the NLCS here in 2004 only to get beaten by the Cardinals. In 2005, they finally make it to the world series, beating the Cardinals in the NLCS, and finally getting their chance. They get swept by the White Sox. And they don't make it again and suck for years after this. Not only that, but they had three of their worst records during this time. In 2015, they finally made the playoffs again, but get beaten. Same with 2016. Then, it happened. They made it back to the world series, beating the Yankees in the ALCS, and getting another chance. An incredible (at the time) world series ensues. Finally, after so many years, they win the World Series against the Dodgers. This seemed like an all-time high point for them. Not only that, but in 2017, 2018, and 2019, they seemingly dominated. Many hometown all-stars becoming renowned throughout the league. Not only that, but they made it back to the World Series in 2019, beating the Yankees again in the ALCS. However, they lost against the Nationals. It seemed like the greatest time period in Astros history. Then, it happened. The scandal broke. It ruined the Astros reputation. Their championship? Tainted. Their celebrations? Pointless. Hometown all-stars becoming some of the most hated players in the league. It seemed like the Astros were catapulted back into the dark ages. Hopefully, one day they can win a real championship.
Didn't know what was going on in Connecticut, I never heard of any pimp name Michael Dollar, I don't know what happened while I was in Detroit Michigan for Two Weeks.
This '04 NLCS was definitely an explosive series, but the ALCS was much more memorable. It had one of if not the greatest comeback in baseball history and it was between the most historic rivalry in sports and it was even more amazing after what happened the year before in the '03 ALCS. I'm sorry but there is a reason why more people remember the ALCS than the NLCS from 2004. It was absolutely historic, plus the Sox broke the "curse" in the World Series
Not a Red Sox or Cards fan, (well more of a cards fan i guess) but i dont understand how a team with 104 wins line the cardinals and who were playing so well up until this game got swept by the Red Sox. Red Sox were good, but really? couldnt even win one game?
Exciting game.. Let's see who's headed to the Red Sox slaughterhouse. Ha ha ha. No team in baseball was going to stand a chance against the Sox after what they had just accomplished.
9/11 wasn't an inside job. This is a country known for its fads and its tendency to overreact to issues and then forget them as everyday life pushes them into the background. God Bless America until the end of the Afghanistan war when the troops all come home will continue being the seventh inning stretch for MLB on Sunday, Memorial Day, 4th of July, opening day, and the postseason. The Houston Astros were once a proud franchise. But then they took the wrong path with sign-stealing. Now they will live in the shadows.
It was just one season. The ‘22 win was their redemption.
@@billgrimes7146 This is true. Their second championship put it all to rest.
Didn't know what was going on in Connecticut, I never heard of any pimp name Michael Dollar, I don't know what happened while I was in Detroit Michigan for Two Weeks.
This and the Wildcard between the Bucs and Reds from this year. Then yeah, I agree.
Yup, you said it best.
I remember back then when brewers took 2nd place and reds 3rd
it's a chilly damn night
Not a Red Sox or Cards fan, (well more of a cards fan i guess) but i dont understand how a team with 104 wins line the cardinals and who were playing so well up until this game got swept by the Red Sox. Red Sox were good, but really? couldnt even win one game?
because is the team that gets hot at the right time that wins it all.
That's true, just look at the royals of this past season 2014.
Nathan Shank yup, after that LCS we were screwed before it began.
+Nathan Shank I agree but chill with the whole put the best 25 couldn't beat the Red Sox.
Nathan Shank I assure you putting the best 25 players of all time , could beat the 04 Sox or any team
Totally agree
Really wanted the Astros to win. Wanted to see Rodger the dodger back in Boston
Where My STL Peops At
2:17:53 is that a catchers mit?
Brewers used to be good rivalry once as well

Games like this are gone forever with the pitch clock /:

Clemens*
These two teams played for the right to be cannon fodder for the Red Sox
dont blame the media, although it was one of the best in history it just happened to take place ath the same time as the best in history.

(save for New York and Los Angeles they play it every game unlike all baseball stadiums) Your thoughts?
