Turning an Old Camper Frame into a Car Trailer - Ep. 1

- We've been looking for a car trailer for what feels like years - and everything up here is 3k and above for worn out, rusted, no-title-having trailers. So I figured, why not pick up and old frame and make one myself! In this episode we handle all the basic fabrication related stuff to get everything ready for paint!

I saw how u cut the angle iron like to see how you weld it in
Is there a link to the diamond plate fenders?
Awesome video/editing brother! You should make a video explaining how you got ahold of the frame too!
Need a part 2. I wanna see some horizontal gusset/steps on the angle iron for the fender. (Use the old camper step.)
It’s covered in snow at the moment, but I have some stuff showing up for it this week. Hoping to get the j channel on, and build the ramp mounts, plus the new taillights.
Do you register it as a camper or gotta get a home made registration? And is a bitch to do.
Just got a free 28 foot camper im doing the same thing to.
Too bad you didnt move the axles forward a bit
The axles are almost dead center of the trailer if remember correctly
If u had an idea what u were talking about about, u may save others lives. A trailer is always supposed to have the axles biased toward the rear so it has a tongue heavy bias when loaded. This prevents swaying when pulled and will actually allow u to go more than 30 mph. When fully loaded a trailer should have at least a 10% weight bias on the tongue. That's why the larger the trailer, the larger the vehicle needed for towing.
Im doing something similar with a 16ft traier frame I got for $100. I really like the fenders you used and the ease of how they mounted. Where did you get them?
You can get a pair here, www.ebay.com/itm/403301801903?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=0NsTkrXXTrO&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=bx81mmn7qiy&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Why don’t you name the parts you buy to build the trailer on your list 🤦🏻♂️
Every ex camper frame is gonna have different axles & different axle spacing. So lug pattern and fender length could be different. The 2x2 angle I got from my shop for scrap price. Then a wiring harness depends on frame length as well.
The problem for old camper frames for car haulers is they are normally too light duty and narrow. They make decent flatbed though
I work in the structural steel industry, you’re not wrong with ratings. However, generally box frames are the best (this is a 2x4 box frame.) If you stiffen it like I have it does a better job of distributing the load. I’ll have to look more, but I imagine the axles and springs are good for a 3-4.5k load (would make sense for a camper this size.) Since I only plan on hauling cars with it, I think it’ll do the job.
Did you run into any problems registering it?
Currently considering this on my Gulfstream Innsbruck this looks pretty much like it
where is ep.2 on this trailer ?
Coming soon! Time is being split between three other projects (two of which are full fab motor swaps.) We still have to dove the rear of this and then get it wired - it doesn’t fit in the garage so it’s abit chilly to work on 😂 oh and I keep forgetting to buy another bottle of argon
Sooooooo part 2?
Just got some more steel for it
We need part 2! I just bought a 229' frame and plan on doing something similar.
I’m trying! Haha it’s out back in its current state, we’ve been focused on a bunch of stuff and currently I need to finish my truck so I can actually use the trailer lol
I got a 1973 20ft camper I'm thinking about making into a trailer like this, however my rims are rusted completely through and lugs and nuts are so rusted and corroded, they won't come off. Its also a channeled frame. But for $450, I don't think its too bad?
Should be able to make it work! With it being a channel frame you may want to build a “platform” on top of the channels to help stiffen it all up
Im doing the same on a FREE.99 - 21ft camper. Scrapped it to bare frame, put in 6x 2x3x3/16 cross members, 14" chrome wheels, new load range D tires. Ready to wire up all the lights, fab up drive over fenders, and outfit the storage, decking, stablizers, and ramps. then paint. Cool work.
I feel like trailers were double the value when I picked this up, then I spent $1200 on parts. Fast forward to today and car trailers are back down to $1,500, which hurts some of my motivation lol
It looks good overall. I built trailers back in the day for Crosley trailers in Ohio and your upgrades and custom work is worth far more the a cheap $1500 open car hauler. Don't be so hard on yourself as you did a good job yourself and improved your original trailer x10. 👍
i would have made the drivers side a flip down fender so you can get out of the car
That’s the silliest thing I ever heard ( and that’s put nicely) the trailer is like not even a full 3 feet off the ground what’s gonna happen if you jump off it? Worried it might cause arthritis in your 60’s? 😂😂
@@Gigachadly beats having to climb out a window
What are car trailers going price wise used?
It fluctuates quite a bit (at least up here in NY) when I picked this up car trailers were 4-5k. Even for 3k, you were getting a pretty beat trailer. Since then, trailers are now around 2k for a crappy one and 3-4k for a reasonable one.
From 500-5000+ here in oregon 😂😂
I wouldn't put the fenders on it.
But you’d be throwing stones all over your car!
