I was there the night they recorded this and you can't understand how completely overwhelming it was. It was so loud that every note of Gilmour's guitar rang through your whole body and the mirror ball was so bright you were blinded. You couldn't hear anything, couldn't feel anything except what the Floyd wanted you to hear and feel. It was like flying through space, held up on the music. We were in tears when the solo kicked in, men and women alike. And when the crowd left Earls Court, it was eerily silent. We were standing on the tube platform and hardly anyone could speak. We were all just looking at each other with that "WTF just happened" look in our eyes. It was a truly religious experience.

I had the chance to see this show two nights in a row during their visit to the Olympic Stadium in Montreal on May 23 and 24, 1994.
As you say, at the end of the show, the crowd seemed oddly quiet and calm.
Since I worked night shifts, I had to go to work after the show, and the buddies at work looked at me like I was high on drugs, yet I hadn't taken anything.
With Pink Floyd, no need for drugs to get high, their music is more than enough and in addition, there is no danger of overdose.
But seeing them perform can be addictive, hence the reason for seeing this show twice.

I bought a ticket when they were in Prague (Czech Republic) with this concert, and the day before I got a fever and strep throat (I was really "uncomfortably numb"). Because it was so cold and rainy, I couldn't go to the concert. For me it is one of the saddest days of my life... My friend, to whom I gave the ticket, still congratulates me ;-).

Someone has a gripe with my pick which a lot of people agree with. If I wasn’t a Pink Floyd fan I would choose David Gilmour. Ok everybody has there opinions,.. but I have to go on what I hear. it also regularly comes in lower 🤣 I like your choice of favourite guitarist but I take all of the poll things and lists etc with a grain of salt as music is personal not a popularity contest. I anyway cannot compare this to other great solos I love from other genres of music, and I love this, although I actually feel the song drags a bit at times in this live version but the ending solo is awesome. Is it the greatest? does it matter? I am pretty sure David (Gilmour) doesn't care. David comes in my big 3 in guitarists but the other 2 are very different and closer to each other than him. Floyd are unique in their sound and Gilmour is a very large part of that sound so he deserves all the accolades he gets but I don't think that ranking lists do any of the greatest any service in the end. Popularity polls are hopeless just look at how badly Rolling Stone magazine did with their "Greatest Singers of All Time" ranking recently...

I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show Syracuse Carrier Dome in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all. When the “Disco Ball’ was uncovered and the lights hit it….. WHAT IS HAPPENING was what I said….The entire crowd was held in a trace and our minds totally blown by what we witnessed.

The best solo ever. I am in love with guitars and heard so many great solos but this has it all. Warm, cold, sweet, bitter, alive, dead. I always played this song in the summer after a hard day work, drinking a cold beer at my balcony and listen to this song in a loop. The lyrics represent for me the society we are living in. Nightwish made a song called 'Noise" and the video clip show what I think of when I hear this song. Everybody's screaming, everybody wants everything but because all goes at the same time we do not have attention for each other and are more in our selfish world (your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying). Besides that everybody wants to be healthy, good looking, fit without taking care of your inner self. In the end we need to fix it with some drugs and we go on and on. I love this song deeply and feeling so bad never seeing them live. Roger Waters will be playing here in the summer but I am more a Gilmours man. Great voice and guitar treating as no one else.

Love and warm regards from Cologne Germany. Here any facts to the Tour: The concerts of the "DIVISION BELL TOUR" featured even more special effects ( On the day of the concerts, the airspace above the respective city was closed for several hours for safety reasons due to the laser show !!! ) than the previous tour of even other bands and artist tours ever and it was in 1994, including two custom designed airships. They also used an Antonov military cargo plane plus 2 x cargo Boeing 747s. 3 seperate stages leapfrogged around North America and Europe, each of that stages 180 feet (55 m) long and featuring a 130 foot (40 m) arch resembling the Hollywood Bowl venue. One stage in use, one being dismantled from the previous venue and one being set up at the next. They need 3-4 days to building on stage up 3 days for re-building.When Pink Floyd performed this in the US, they traveled with 4 48' military grade mobile generators. 1994 there wasn't a stadium built with enough electrical input to run the Pink Floyd show. That was also new for the American´s. The US Army said: "Ok, that´s cool project and makeable for us - let´s do it for the american audience - But we are always there! Is that understood and clear!?" - Answer Gilmour: "Yes Sir it is clear, thanks a lot, then let´s go. You will not regret it". I Think they don´t regret it. That's what happens when you forget to give a budget figure to your lighting effects designer. That sound comes from a 220,000 watt sound system. The glitter ball from "Comfortably Numb" was over 15ft (4,6 m) in diameter, and the lasers were a new experimental design, and Pink Floyd cornered the entire world's supply at the time. All in all, the tour required 700 tons of steel carried by 53 articulated trucks, a crew of 161 people and an initial investment of US$ 4 million plus US$ 25 million of running costs just to stage. This tour played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities; each concert gathered an average audience of more then 45,000. In summary, it is the most elaborate live tour project of all times to date. The planning alone took 3 years. The tour (not the planning) was sponsored by Volkswagen.

At this particular concert, The Floyd was a using a 232,000 watt quadrophonic system...and that was just for the audio. As for sound and lighting combined, I've read that they actually diverted an entire electrical substation to Earl's Court to provide the necessary power. If that's true, I AM impressed... Excellent reaction and opinions. Thank you.

Great reaction guys. I think you needed to listen to the lyrics first, to embrace the whole. I've listened to this masterpiece so many times, and it still chills me. Whilst the Wall is fantastic, The Dark Side of the Moon, in its entirety, is next level. You should check out 'Time'. Simply awesome. Good to see Arnold chilling out on the chair. Cheers.

You're totally right: It is considered as THE number 1 best guitar solo ever (and especially this Pulse version), for guitar player, professionnal musicians in general, press, etc...
I know each note of this solo as I listened to it hundreds of times, and still have tears almost each time.
I'm not an hardcore fan of Pink Floyd, but I love very much this band and I have so much respect for what they gave to music.
If still a world in 1000 years, I'm pretty sure this solo will be in the core of music history.

I’m really enjoying your Floyd journey, they are the greatest of all the bands imo. You are missing out significantly in not listening to arguably the best version of arguably their best song - David Gilmour and Rick Wright live at Gdańsk, “Echoes”. It’s the last performance ever of the song before Ricks death. It’s hard to believe human beings can organise at such a high level of musicianship and tightness to produce this miraculous sound. Please give it a go.. cheers

The harmony and focused energy are all the more amazing. You are dead on with the emotions this song evokes. It IS a song about a severely disturbed man who is trying to regain consciousness after a drug induced coma and a nervous breakdown. The outside voices are the people trying to revive him. Great job listening 👍👍👍👍. Find the official video.

With Pink Floyd, it's sometimes impossible to understand one song plucked off an album. The reason for this difficulty is that this is one of PF's "concept albums," which are "books," each song a page or a chapter of the book. Much info is missed by taking this one song out of its context in the album. Here's a description of "The Wall." Wikipedia does a great job reducing the massive scale of "The Wall"'s story here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wall#:~:text=%22The%20Trial%22.-,Concept%20and%20storyline,Floyd's%20former%20frontman%20Syd%20Barrett. Read the two sections "Concept & storyline" and "Plot." There's enough background for readers to understand "where the message is coming from" and how "Comfortably Numb" fits into the whole.

A Pink Floyd song is not about «melody» or rimes as much as about emotions (normally dark emotions like despair, sadness, lonlyness, etc)
The big disco ball is highly symbolic.
First of all, it wasn't seen until the lights spotted it. It was simply not there! Hidden in a box in the ceilling. So when it got lit, you can understand why the audience went wild.
And then, when it opened up and showed the shining diamond that's inside, a direct reference to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (which refer to Syd Barrett), the fans understood!
    Genius!

Err. No. David was brought in to replace Syd Barrett who took at least one acid trip too many. Nick Mason, the drummer, is the only member of Pink Floyd to have performed on every one of their albums. It would be a big mistake to underestimate the importance and skill of his drumming, as shown in "Time" and "Set the controls for the heart of the sun" in particular.

I've read through the comments and I'm stunned nobody mentioned how cute their little doggy was when he came to watch the action around 13:40 :) I guess folks may have been a bit distracted by that face-melting solo and missed it. It almost reminds me of that experiment where they ask you to focus on counting the number of times they pass the basketball ... (if you know, you know).
