- This morning, I received Tesla's FSD v12.3 software update in my car. If looking for just my impressions, skip to 1:16:45 timestamp.
1. Overall, I’m super impressed. Ride quality is much more human-like than v11 with acceleration, braking and turning all much improved.
2. Smart decisions - overall, v12.3 made better and smarter decisions in challenging situations than v11. Several places where I know v11 would have difficulty, v12.3 handled with ease.
3. v12.3 handled speed bumps perfectly.
4. Many of my rides today were flawless and exactly how a human would drive. v11 has a rigidity that is gone with v12.3.
Overall, I’m quite blown away by v12.3. I was expecting a version that was comparable to v11 - better in some ways and worse in other ways. But what I’ve experienced (so far) is a system that feels much more confident and capable than v11. v12.3 is far from perfect and there’s still a lot of work ahead for Tesla’s FSD team but the end-to-end neural net approach looks like it’s clearly the right approach.

Dave great to see you and your impressions. You are missed. Best to your wife and the fam.
i drive for a living, FSD v12.3 is better than most drivers already
😂 probably very true but still 😂
Good lord.
It's definitely better than drivers on drugs or alcohol. Maybe Colorado should have waited for FSD in all cars before legalizing hallucinogenics.🤦♂️
Uber uber
Just had my 1st trip with v12.3, it is a smoother drive than me. My turns are not consistently as smooth as FSD. I agree with you
You don't know how hype I was to see an hour 20 minute video from Dave Lee popup on my homescreen!!!
His insights are always great
Time for a chat with james douma!!
Yes please😊
Absolutely
Ugh, please no
Thank you Dave, most of us miss your well balanced, honest and knowledgeable opinion. I hope that life is starting to be kinder for you and your family.
This video was sponsored by Starbucks. Just kidding, welcome back Dave!
Nice work Dave. All the best to you and the family from Scotland. What a time to be alive!
Great to see you again!!!!!!
Good to see you again making videos, best of everything to your family ❤️😀
Thanks, Dave, for this one! Your insightful and finely differentiated observations are extremely valuable and informative. But alas, they show also that it may take quite a while until we can enjoy something 12.3-like over here in Switzerland. Best, Carlo
So exciting! Thanks for the detail and effort
Nice video , although you do have a section in twice I think! It’s great to see all the old faces getting v12 and making videos again.
i’ll say it again.
Best FSD videos on the internet
You put in a lot of work, it shows and is appreciated.
Great job bro!
Last video I saw you were starting your treatment. Great to see you looking so well! 🙏
Cant think of a better person to get v12.3! Thanks so much for the video
Thank you soooo much Dave~!
There's been so many over-the-top reviews, we really need a clear minded person like you to really test this in an impartial manner.
No disrespect to the others of course, but you have always carried a rational and careful reputation around so your voice matters.
Seems like V12.3 is really very close to the edge.
thank you for sharing this experience, please keep up coming back with more content
So nice to see you Dave.
Appreciate your perspective. Nice work.
Great video!! I've to say the first turn already drove me nuts 😇
Just watched Chuck...looking forward to your drive.
Thanks for great content again Dave, I appreciate its extra work but do you mind doing some time stamps where possible please 😊
Thanks for all your hard work Dave
Spot on! As a retired engineer who designed avionics test equipment you did a fantastic narrative, especially the nuanced subtleties. There are a very few people who could capture the essence of both safety and comfort associated with FSD. My wife and I have gave up on v11 for safety and comfort, plus the yoke doesn't allow for quick takeover. When possible, we keep our hands ready to take over!
I doubt seriously doubt FSD can reach sigma-six safety (3.4 defects in a million) because of the environment, but hope remains to achieve an order of magnitude better safety than most drivers, and better than most professional drivers.
Good to see you again. Very interesting drives. It’s looking good. Progress is being made.
Thanks Dave. This was really nice to just experience it 'for real'. Much appreciated.
We miss you Dave. Could you share your thoughts to figure 01 humanoid robots?
Glad to see Dave is back.
Great video for me as a. Investor but not a Tesla owner I can see the unbiased progress. Keep updating g and thanks
Hi Dave, good to see you again
Thanks Dave and all the best to you and your family. I can't wait to try V12 myself. I was quite disappointed with V11 in Colorado and essentially gave up on it after some egregious mistakes. I can't wait to try V12 myself in my neck of the woods. Definitely looks very impressive in Austin. Gary Black and Bradford Ferguson did not as flawless an experience in downtown Chicago, but if eventually Robotaxi can be introduced in California and Tejas, that should be a fantastic case study. Build it out from there. One of my main issue with V11 was making a right into a 55 mph road. It seemed to just not get it right. I can't wait to try V12 on that same right turn. Fingers crossed.
Gary black was on FSD version 12.2.1 dave has the newest version 12.3 there is significant diffrence as reported by all people who currently have this
Love the content Dave, keep it coming.
Excellent analysis, Dave, thank you
You're looking good, man! Hope your family is doing well also.
I watched the whole thing. Dave, you've done an amazing job testing and this was a soothing video to have running in the background whilst working. The parking lot recovery from the missed right turn was great, and no doubt it sees speed bumps better than humans. It was perfect over those large speed bumps. The sudden apex lane change to the right on the apex of a turn was hairball (right before you got to County Line), especially because of the timing of that change with the warning beep and no signal. I'm guessing it wouldn't have done that if a car was there.
Overall, 12.3 is fantastic from what I see. Thanks Dave!
Yay! Dave is back!
Good to see you Dave!
It is great, both the upgraded software and your experience and explanation
Hope all is well with you and family.
Best to you and wife!!!!
I tried FSD 12 last night. I noticed the car now gradually edges into the bike lane before making a right turn into a small side street. Before it used to be a more jerky turn without merging into the bike lane first. This is good !
Ur few of the fsd testers i trust
leep up the great work Dave!
The funnest video ever! Thanks Dave Lee!!
Thank you Dave
Thanks for picking drive settings that I’m most likely to use. I’m looking forward to using 12.3’s more intelligent speed offset feature; 11.4.9 is often slow to acknowledge changes in speed limits.
Dave your videos are always good & entertaining. The only thing I’d suggest is another interested party riding with you for conversation.
Thanks for the video!
Dave where have you been??? Hope your wife doing good. I am 1/2 way thru my radiation treatment for prostate cancer. UCSF has been super attentive and looking forward for the new me after radiation is done. It's every weekday 35 times. So far the hormone treatment has made me feel different and the radiation has caused discomfort like diarrhea. I am tolerating well but not sure after treatment is done. I have talked to those patients with same treatment and they don't feel good but they say that hopefully heal after 6 weeks of treatment.
Good luck to you. Take care
GREAT REVIEW DAVE You are a True MUSKETEER !
Good to see you Dave .. another Austinite
impressive Dave, would like to see in a much busier street with people crossing etc.
I was also impressed with the drive. I can't wait for my V12. V11 scares me when it accelerate when it should be keeping same speed with merging traffic. I always have to dial down the speed cause it doesn't. feel safe.
Looks really smooth.
Sensational, Dave! - because it is not blown out of proportion, but highly impressive
Hey Dave when do you think the additional compute will come online?
Good vid. The new T model 3 Performance looks unreal but does it have 48v architecture and steer by wire.
Thanks Dave. FSD still work to be done. Its improving greatly, but you cannot have things like speeding in a parking lot or that scary lane change. Sold 85% of TSLA after the Q1 earnings call. Will add later this year or next after stock goes much lower. The AI stuff will take more time.
Dave best part was when it missed the right turn at the end readjusted…mind blowing through a parking lot and a left back on track 😅
can u do a short video giving us a summary of your thoughts as you continue to test it?
Excellent stuff. ❤
Great to see!
Now it’s time for Cybertruck to get it!
Very nice video, but even more glad to see you back :)
Hope everyting is great for 2024 for you !
i dunno wats more insane, a 33 engine rocket or watching a car drive its self lol
Thanks Dave. Can we get some timestamps of notable incidents?
Hi Dave. I think I’m like you, where I’m a bit more conservative in my style of driving. I’d like the FSD software to perhaps have a chill mode setting, where it brakes sooner for a smoother stop at intersections, and accelerate a bit slower too. Thoughts?
It does have chill, average, and assertive modes. What they do im not sure, but ive seen testers select them.
Dave, I have missed you. There are very few people on TH-cam that I have confidence in. You are one that I can take to the bank. Let us know how your wife and family are doing. I just got my v12 today.
Hi Dave, PLEASE do a similar drive with James Douma! Thank You!
The most amazing maneuver to date is the correction through the parking lot. The car probably calculated it could not complete the u-turn after it arrived at the location.
Lol I didn’t realize you were letting the car drive for a little while; because you kept you hands on the wheel. When I watch other videos the drivers appear to be totally hand free. Anyway, I think that shows how great 12.3 is. I couldn’t tell a difference just by watching.
How big was the piece of wood? It happens so fast in the video!
Hi Dave. I too just got my push for FSD v12.3 last night and just tested this morning. There was bug and network issues in my area with 2 to 3 bar LTE signals. Adaptive speed did not work well for me as it would not get the speed sign correctly or not see it. Other time it would slow down to almost stop at 5 mile in a 35 to 40 mile speed zone.
Dave - great video as usual - Do you think FSD should add a option called "Unprotected Left Turn" - Disable or Enable. I think some other videos have shown there is potential for significant challenges -- for example other car from opposite side can block the turning bay or you end up sticking out a little in the moving lane etc etc... I have on google nav option like "Avoid Toll Rodes" - simple yet very effective. I think Waymo does something like that -- it tries to avoid unprotected left turns (If I recall some videos in the past) - I think in evolution of FSD it would be prudent to have DEFAULT as NO Unprotected Left Turns - if ppl want to enable thats a choice --- What do others think? Risk reduction for TSLA on PR front as well....
@9:31 I noticed the windshield wipers a few minutes b4 he mentions it because it left streaks, then wiped them away, then left bigger streaks. But I was wondering ...in my car I can control the time of the interval between wipes, so I was wondering about what the driver was complaining. Surely T. has variable wiper capacity.
About 24 min in to take that left, it should keep the wheel straight until it takes the turn, so if its rear-ended its not pushed into oncoming traffic.
Hi Dave- one thing you should do is let the car park itself. It parked one time, in the Starbucks but only because you didn't have time to take over the wheel.
Also, best wishes to you and your wife.
yo dave, missed you!
Wow!! Very impressive! It was almost as if the car was sentient.
Drive with v12.3 for 100 miles, from crowded suburbs to crowded big city. Then you will see that FSD is nowhere near sentient!
1:01:13 I loved this part. It reminded me of many human drivers.😂
WOW and thanks
Let’s gooooo Dave
Thanks for the video for v12. I'm still not getting it yet... In your opinion, how would you rate v11 and v12 (from 0 to 10) ?
missed you Dave
Yes!!!!! I am finally the first person who is making a comment. I was anxiously looking for your videos for last month or so. Thanks for your update. It's wonderful seeing you again.
Dave!
Something in the car, maybe it was your nylon jacket, was scratchy, and kind of overrode some of the audio. But it was still understandable. Thanks for the video of 12.3.
DAVE would love your thoughts on the stock and the business in general
I'm still waiting for version 12, but as far as 11 for me many of the issues on city streets it appears 12 addresses. My main issue was just the forward looking preparation for turns and things. I feel like 11 waits to the last second too often and by that time it's too many cars next to me to get in the appropriate lane which is pretty important in traffic heavy LA. Also, I don't like merging onto the highway without a blinker and driving to the end of the merge lane. That seems dangerous to me so I hope when 12 is being used on highway that's addressed.
Dave, I wish you would have lowered the camera by 2-5 degrees so we might lose the "rear view mirror" but gain more of the "Dash Display". Would allow us to see what FSD is seeing more consistently. Also, praying for your family. Hope your wife is healing!
"It's just so stinking good!" I love it. :)
Hey Dave!
i hope 12.3 goes wide release soon. v11 just doesn't cut it, and seeing all the v12 online has my hyped.
I subscribed to one month of FSD, and I currently have, I believe, version 11.4.9? It is already at the level where it adds life changing value to the car. Elon's estimate of the value of FSD is, to me, beyond what it actually is, however FSD is absolutely world changing software. In 20 years, every car will have either it or some alternative, and people will absolutely take it for granted.
Dave I saw your Fsd drive to 7 Starbucks which were good how ever the last drive passing the hills where the car with a beep changed lanes & served to stay on the road that was a split second to react could have very well driven you into the concrete at high way speed with fatal result!!
I love to have v12 ….. but hmm … I can wait ……
I have plaid with v11
It’s not ready yet imho….
Apparently fixing the wipers is a much harder problem than self driving 😂
Not if Elon hasn't removed the 5 dollar rain sensor. My 2006 Lexus did a better job with rain sensing and curb sensing
I would like to know if you have ridden in a Waymo robo taxi. that are on tour in Austin now to let people ride them. I would like to know what you think of them.
When it parks, does it consider handicapped spots? Will it avoid a handicap spot, or can you tell it to find one, if that's what you need?
Can tesla use starlink as GPS for FSD?
lol I’ve literally been to all of those Starbucks 😂
Try rain x on the windows. Need wipers less, so it will be good
I guess Dave needed a lot of coffee that day 😅
