I had a Mk 5 GTI which I sold to a friend who recently broke up with his wife. When I sold it it had near 300,000 km on the dial. Today the car is still going now with 400,000 km on the dial. I miss that car. Long live the GTI!

Nice and too the point review. I sold my
130k mile 9.5 year of ownership mk5 GTi for a 7.5 GTi performance last July. I can concur that the mk5 is the most GTi hot hatch like.

Lovely Jubbly car, the rawness has been taken out of driving and therefore the simple fun. Give me a Mk 1 any day of the week, new cars are for the rich or throwaway in society who love dealership and their prices.

Thank you for this great review. To me, personally, the MkII is prettier than the MkI, but I still prefer it to the Brand New Ones.

Every car reviewer is making me a proud MK5 GTI owner. I daily drive her. Almost 210K Km. Tuned engine and DSG at 150K. Done wheels, tires, Bilstein B14, Bilstein antiroll bars. I hated golfs and golf drivers since I could buy this. I was choosing between a Clio RS and a Leon Cupra.

Great review, looks like a lot of fun 👍. . .with the manual gearbox only being available on the standard GTi in the UK, do you think the Mk8 CS and CS45 would be more engaging with an extra pedal? 😎

No, that one isn't the first Golf GTI. That one is the facelifted model, what first came early in the eighties. The first one, had 1,5 liter and 110 Hp. Yes, it's a big difference between them. Didn't like the facelift modell. The first one hadn't speed lock. You could rev it up to near 8000 rpm. I drove a -76 modell back then, tuned to 130 hp. Very funny car.

The original GTI had four speed gearbox, and you could go up to 75 mph in second gear, around a bend. What a lovely pocket rocket.

      First gti was a 1.6litre

@@jamesrichardson4604 The first engine in the Golf until 1976, was 1,5 liters, and the famous Scirocco engine had 85 Hp, the same engine as in the Audi 80 GT, but that one gave 100 hp. Then in -75 , Audi upgrade first the engine to 110 hp and 1.6 liter and thats the same engine as in Golf GTI. Had that engine without injection in my -76 Audi 80 LS and 85 Hp. As quick to 50 mph as the Golf GTI, then the GTI dissapeard, becouse the Audi had to ghange to the third gear. GTI could then could go to 75 mph in the second gear.

@@jamesrichardson4604 You have said it, and it's right. That 1,6 liter motor went first in the Audi 80 GTE in -75. Before, they had a GT, with the 1.5 liter and 100 Hp. The Golf shares engines with the Audi 80 and the VW Passat.
