  • Bryton teased their Gardia rear radar back at Eurobike 2022 as a long awaited competitor against the Garmin Varia radar. Today, we finally have a production version for this review which not only competes with the Garmin Varia but also the relatively new Magicshine x Magene 508 radars. The Bryton Gardia R300L undercuts both radars with a competitive retail price of only $129.95 and a class-leading 190m detection range. The radar has a wide 220 degree field of view which allows you to spot cars around corners or in different lanes. Bryton has added a few modern features such as a brake sensor to detect when you’re slowing down and notify riders behind you as well as a USB-C charging port. The Gardia R300L can be paired with any GPS computer that supports radar displays or a stand-alone Bryton Gardia app to display oncoming vehicles and emit visual and audio notifications.
    The Bryton Gardia R300L utilizes Bryton’s proprietary quarter-turn mount design. It’s essentially a Garmin mount but with thicker tabs. Although you can force it into a Garmin mount, we’ve found that it ends up bending the tabs over time which is why we don’t recommend it. Instead, Bryton includes a well designed seatpost mount that uses a standard rubber strap to attach to a seatpost. Right out of the box there are two additional rubber attachments: a flat rubber pad for d-shaped seatposts and a thicker pad for aero seatposts. Both attachments have cutouts that allow them to simply be inserted into the back of the mount. It’s an effective design that should work with nearly any bike setup and even has a built in angle offset to account for the seatpost angle. The only downside to the multi-piece approach is that you have to remember to keep track of the adapters.
    Visually, the Bryton Gardia R300L doesn’t look significantly different from the Garmin Varia or Magicshine x Magene Seemee 508. The top third of the Gardia R300L is dedicated to the taillight while the bottom third is a flat surface for the radar. Dimensionally, the Gardia R300L is very close to other radars with a compact 40mm width, 97mm height and 20.9mm thickness. The big difference with the radar is that Bryton has utilized a square design, which in our opinion gives the Gardia R300L a more modern appearance. The surface of the radar has a matte plastic finish with rounded corners. Along the bottom edge you’ll find a horizontal cutout which hides the status LEDs to indicate battery status and Bluetooth connectivity. The taillight has a red lens with extended body for improved side visibility and a slight curved bottom edge which gives the radar a sleek look...

    Great review, I'm still deciding on which radar to purchase and this price point seems a lot more appealing compared to a Varia unit.

    Love the reviews! Just a suggestion, have you thought of getting a lumen meter? :)

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Testing lumen output is a bit tricky, there are sites like wetestlights.com that use more scientific setups to measure real-output. Without a bench-marked setup I would be worried about misleading people with data.

    for a price of 101 € ( cheapest price ive seen) a good device. bright taillight and real impressive. Videos never show the real power of the taillights. Radar functionality is good and works fine. better than garmin: the solid mount, so im happy with the bryton guardia

      It's definitely a great value. Bryton's latest software addresses a lot of the initial issues with over-sensitivity of the radar as well. Expect to see even more bike rear radars in the market this year, we just got back from Eurobike where CYCPLUS and iGPSPORT had radar prototypes on display.

    Great video! Which one you prefer? Garmin, Magicshine and Bryton ?

      That's a tough question. I think it depends on what you're looking for. Bryton has the best taillight in my opinion but buggy software (it still needs a few firmware updates before it's locked in). Magicshine / Magene have great detection but you can't disable the brake sensor. Garmin is the most tested and stable but it's hard to justify the premium unless you have a lot of other Garmin devices.

    very nice. the lack of camera is a bit disappointing but i don't think i will be paying 300€ more just for that 😀

      I don't believe there is a camera taillight + radar on the market that isn't Garmin right now. Magicshine does have a taillight + camera DV model that's pretty affordable though.

    are tail light need to be focus? I mean, can approach you not only from directly behind. For example, bus or truck driver sit high, which slightly shifted them up, so they see less of direct pointed lightis, Is it preferable flood light in this case? It's not light source any meen, so its not realy need to be iratatingly bright

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. You are correct - you want a combination of flood + focused for optimal visibility. I think the Bryton has nailed the taillight here as it has both: a focused center LED (visible from long distances) and the two smaller LEDs to illuminate the lens to improve side visibility.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are the same radar and are just different ways to refer to it, there is only one Bryton radar on the market currently.

    Hi. I just picked up a Gardia 300L with the latest firmware and have been testing battery life consumption in Day Flash with brake sensing turned on. So far I’ve consumed 63% of a full charge over 6 hours. By my projections, I’ll only get 9.5 hours of runtime significantly undershooting the stated 17 hours. Did you see that much additional consumption with brake sensing turned on?
    Also, I’m noticing that the app reports a battery percentage at the end of a ride that will then be 10% higher at the start of my next ride after a period of being in standby. For example, I ended today’s ride at 18%, but when I connected to the radar via the app several hours later, it was then reporting 28% battery life. Did you notice this behavior?

    • @jpoodle
      @jpoodle หลายเดือนก่อน

      My Bryton 750SE computer does this exact thing! Must be a Bryton thing.

    • @cohenlopez
      @cohenlopez หลายเดือนก่อน

      Looks like the battery issue was addressed by the latest firmware update. I also no longer keep it in standby.
      New annoyance however with the latest firmware: the 300L no longer retains the brake light setting. Once your turn it on, it defaults to brake sensing on. If you want to keep it off, you need to open the app on your phone, turn it off, and then keep the app open, I believe.
      All in all, still happy with the light though.

    Hi, do you know if garmin varia or bryton gardia or magene will work my 'Lezyne Mega C' bike computer? Lezyne Mega C' bike computer supports ANT+, i want to double confirm that. Thank you :)

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As far as I can tell, I don't think any Lezyne computers support radar displays. Even though it supports ANT+ they would need to integrate a display area on the user interface to display the data.

      sorry, one more question. I have garmin fenix 6s pro watch. How about the alert sound when garmin varia is connected to the garmin watch? do you know if the alert sound is helpful personally? @@TheSweetCyclists

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shaikdiary I haven't tried it personally, but I've used similar features that have audible warnings. It's pretty helpful, and most GPS computers will use some sort of beep to let you know cars are coming. It lets you keep your eye on the road, and you get a "all clear" beep when there are no vehicles detected anymore.

    What is the difference between the Gardia R300 and the Gardia R300L - what does the letter "L" mean? Thank you

      There is no difference. The product name is officially Gardia R300L but most people have been referring to it as the Gardia R300.

    If it's anything like their flagship s800 computer then it will lack a key feature like the S800 does with strava live segments. Also please note Bryton customer service is non existent.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  ปีที่แล้ว

      Aside from a few software updates to improve the detection of car clusters the Gardia works pretty well out of the box. Bryton has even done a good job with the stand-alone app - it's a lot less buggy than their Active app. I suspect the lack Strava live segments on the computers is a licensing issue - I'm guessing Bryton would have to pay Strava money to add the feature.

      I've reported an issue that exists in all Bryton cycle computers, but they never ever reply!
      I like to do night rides, particularly in winter, when temps get below zero here in the UK. None of the Bryton computers will show temperatures below zero, they all dash ( - - - ) out. The sensor MUST be able to record negative temperatures, as they show up in ride data that gets uploaded, so it's a bug with their cycle computer firmware. I first reported this 18 months ago. I got one reply to say they will look in to it, and they'll get back to me. They never did! I sent multiple emails asking for an update - nothing. I tested the newer models late last year, and found out that they also have this issue. I reported it once again, and didn't get any kind of acknowledgement.
      Bryton are simply a disgrace when it comes to customer service, and reviewers should boycott them.
