- When one truck is totaled another must replace it. Eric's step side was t-boned in a collision and a friend of his brought over this LS swapped OBS Chevy Silverado to replace it. This truck has been hit with the terrible modification stick, so we're going to undo everything. Taking it back to stock, making it look and run right.

Those rims are known as SS rims because they were originally used on 454 SS. They came out later as an option. Shine them up and with raised white letter tires the look awesome on an obs.
I agree, I love those wheels, too. I didn't think about the 454 SS connection until you mentioned it but you are soooo right! Great catch!
They're called "Stamped Shield." My 97 GMC stepside came with them. I also have the open white letters baby.

Soft brake pedals are common on OBS trucks. Doing a master cylinder upgrade to a NBS truck is a common swap. Just need the new master cylinder from an early 2000’s truck, and an adapter for the front brake line.

@@snackler6102 Neither does a poorly built LS, but I would say a 2wd sport truck plan was in the works, not working with the truck.

I watch all your videos and about 4 years ago you did a windshield repair on a Chevy Volt in your driveway with Gabe. Well, I bought the same kit and the results were amazing. The ding in the windshield completely disappeared. In South Carolina, we got lots of UV rays, 90 degrees plus UV rays. Well, I just took the car into the garage because the sunlight was brutal. I thought I would bring it into the garage and make the repair then back it onto the driveway for UV rays. After I was done I just glanced over the instructions while the patch was curing and was stunned to see it said "Do the work in the shade and then put the car in the sun". Keep up the good work I have learned so much. I give God the glory. He keeps his own children straight. Man, that stuff cures faster than lightning. I would have had a mess if I tried to do the patch in the driveway in direct sunlight. I am not that fast.

It needs a fan shroud like yesterday. I know it doesn't get THAT hot where you are, but that shroud is critical to airflow.
Yep. "Matt's offroad recovery" has already been having overheating issues with his 8.1 LS swap into his world's largest off-road wrecker, because he does not have a fan shroud to direct airflow.

The older i get the more i appreciate mufflers. Thats too loud for a daily driver back and forth from work
The folks at RollnLoc bed covers are pretty helpful to fix your bed cover. Mine had been damaged by a previous owner's receiver hitch - I took a picture of what I thought was broken, they gave me a quote, I ordered it and everything went together correctly. Spent $130 - better than taking it in or getting a replacement.
Late model 20 inch look SO GOOD these obs . The 5 spoke with the white letter. Sporting wowza.
LMC truck has a lot of the stuff to make that truck nice.
Amazon sells a nice set of actual glass headlights and turn signal lenses for a OBS. They weren’t that expensive.

Almost all of those "tuning lights" are so bad quality, doesn't work properly, leak water in, led's just stop working and look awful...

My FIL had the same truck. I loved driving that thing! It was so gritty, like driving a cinder block and the speedometer was off by 10%.
The air filter works fine. It keeps out large rocks and small children 😂

I'd like to see the car crusher running. That was a great project.
Get the stock E fan set up and wiring harness from that truck all the way to the ecm, then you can put those pins in that and have the computer control the fans. Get the OE shroud and trim that to be the holder for the fans. I did that on my OBS and it works perfectly.
more great content..my girlfriend is a chevy person and bought one about three years ago with 276,000 miles on it..and its still running strong.
Today I learned every authentic Australian car has kangaroo damage and every Kansas car has barbed wire fence damage.
At least 1998 is the better dash layout for those OBS Chevys unfortunately it’s broken 🤦♂️ I hated the early dash on the 94 work truck I had but it wasn’t broken 😂
At work we also have a 98' OBS with liftgate that won't quit, but the dash is completely caving in. Southwest sun certainly didn't help it, but that seems to be a failing of these dashes from this era of GM. Wonder if any company makes a factory style replacement, or has new old stock for all the different colors they came in.
Those are my favorite OBS wheels.
NBS LS radiator is just like that one in there, but with the steam port. that upper hose is a NBS silverado stock part. a NBS radiator and electric fan set up bolts right in.

I'm very interested in part 2. Hoping to see a new rad, electric fans, shroud. I like what others said about master cylinder swap. I can literally feel that soft pedal. The tuning will be interesting. Lock cylinders, tailgate handle. You should definitely make it a point to smoke those new tires before getting new ones.
Makes me want to put work in on my '95.
Truck has a healthy bumpstick. I like those aftermarket LED taillights, I have them on my Yukon, they are brighter and look better, the stock ones are an ugly red blob. They are fairly cheap on Amazon but I’m going on 4 years now in the hot TX & AZ sun and no UV peel and they still work great. Looks like they hacked everything though which wasn’t ideal. Enjoy the new truck!
The bogging when trying to launch it at the end of the video is because of Brake Torque Management still being enabled in the ECU. Ironically by fixing the brake light switch you've kicked in it's Abuse Management code and it wont let you do a standing burnout anymore lmao. I suspect this ECU may not have ever been tuned as much as just had VATS disabled and slapped in from some random junkyard truck.
@JR Hope to see more GMT400 content. I have the same problem with the 3rd brake light/cargo light doing nothing. Hoping to see you diag and troubleshoot it!

Complete AC component change.
Even the evaporator behind the dash.
Literally, factory new A/C.
I didn’t need any sort of converter for my 0411 swap in my obs. Not running an ls though
I do like the brake reservoirs that you can clean like this. Everything I have just has a cap.
My grandpa recently gave me his 01 extended cab. He bought it brand new. I just hit 165k miles. Put a 40 delta flow. Wanted a little noise but not to much. Upgraded alternator. New crankshaft censor. Runs tip top. Now just cosmetics. The fun stuff

Important tip: I once blew out SOMETHING by trying to install an interior bulb with the switch on (by accident!). So worth noting that it's not a good idea to do that if you can avoid it.
I brought a 92 back to life 10 years ago and ended up with a reliable and nice- running truck.
Someone must have given them an eBay gift card, if such a thing exists.

Those are sport wheels and are factory to some trucks including the 454ss. You can upgrade the master cylinder to a nbs 99 up master and get alot better pedal.
My 98 kept losing its brake lights every time I took a turn and I couldn’t figure out why. I ended up replacing the fuse 3 times, pulled the steering column to replace the brake switch and traced every inch of the wiring to see wtf was wrong with it. Turns out the homemade trailer wiring from the previous owner had fallen onto my dual exhaust pipes and had melted the insulation, so every time I turned, the wire shorted to the exhaust. Taught me to always look for the simple stuff first, glad you did the same.
Ooooo yeah. Can’t wait to see the rest done.
The brakes on all my OBS trucks have been crap. Replace the power booster with ones off 800 series truck seem to help. I just got used to the braking being poor.

probably didn't think to swap the blinker circuit out. You have to put in a specialty controller with voltage balancing when you drop any LED-based bulb in a turn signal circuit. Also, the side markers on an 88 body CK are in the LOWER segment, next to the turn signals. The upper is only a reflector.
CK lights are notoriosly dim going all the way back to the 73 origins, which were painted matt white. even the modern plastic buckets tended to haze out in a hurry. why the previous owner didn't just drop LED conversion bulbs in instead of the horrible Altezza style is a mystery, but often as not, OEM replacement light buckets were nearly impossible to find. also, those smoked lenses in the front were contributing to the lack of visiblility.
you should have seen the mess I had in a 90 4Runner. stock on the outside, butchered into a "rolling radio" on the inside. half the trim screws were missing, and there wasn't a drop of carpet or sound insulation anywhere.

The Roll 'n Lock "lock" is available as a replacement from them.
We had a maroon on maroon 93 Suburban. That setup brings back memories. Unfortunately, up here in the great white north, 10-15 years max and they're rotted out.
20:33 well you just found a Oklahoma street racing trick I’ve done that before so if your out street racing and the cops come you can turn your lights off and the cops won’t see you when you have to hit the breaks and with a OBS the headlights stay on so you can still see it’s called Oklahoma Ghost Running so now your not lost anymore lol
As a former owner of a 97, those cup holders are anything but nice
On the plus side, it seems to never run out of gas, at least according to that gauge.
I like the chrome steel wheels on her. Those are the wheels the SS's came with from the factory.
My uncle bought a white stepside shortbed back in the mid 00’s. Had a fiberglass tonneau cover. The interior was blue and he had a cool single din headunit that had dolphins swimming graphics when music was playing on the LCD. Looking back it was nice, got beaten up when he took to Mexico and sold it to our uncle. To this day it still shows up in videos and photos from them but it looks clapped out now.
The truck has solid bones. Needs tires, oem wheels, fix the ac, oil, trans oil rear dif fluid change. clean inside, fix tailgate handle. Then take off the non oem junk.
It’s an antique in a year!

Tail gate handles on OBS body truck is most common thing to break about every 6 months they just don’t last

Don't be surprised if there is a total master cylinder failure. Dragging all that debris past the seals can ruin them.

should be the warm incandescent bulbs from that era. gives a calm warm feeling in burgandy interiors. nice work truck though, lots to do with it to bring it back around. Crazy to think the blue lights removed, but everyones driving down roads with blue purple street lights lol

The tonneau cover is supposed to have a string that you pull underneath to close it. When pulling it will go into the locking mode, so try to find where that is supposed to be fastened on the covers inside, right under the lock and pull and it will stop sliding open.

I think the truck would look good with pin stripes to break up the monotony of the white paint.
Since you're already finding sub-par 'upgrades' and install practices on the truck- check the condiition of all the wiring behind the dash. Easy enough to do a look-see. Typical sloppy installs on aftermarket stereos, alarms, whatever in the cab leads to wierd stuff on the instrument cluster on these older Chevy's. The speedometer and gauge issues you saw made me remember a used Chevy plagued by such hackery. Addressing the slashed up wirebundles up there cleared up about 8 issues for me. You're probably right about the tach being a result of the LS swap, but you never know- an easy fix is the best.

Truck has overheating problems. The two attempts at replacing the fan in the bed doesn't lie. Probably a lack of a fan shroud.

Seems like it would be simpler to get a whole front grill with all of the lights, and normal tail/brake lights from a salvage yard.

Lol, Dual cupholders are cool, unless they are in the OBS haha Those "Dual" cupholders will heat up your drinks unless you tape up that vent with some masking tape.
Refurb the roll lock bed cover? Some paint and some lube on the channels to get it back into looking good and working good.
