    I'll always remember my opening hours in this game.
    Somehow i didnt find the warm dublet and hadnt learned about making cold resistence food,yet i was climbing the icy area where one of the guardian dragons was.
    The journey was hard,the cold was killing me piece by piece and i was chewing through my food items.
    I made the first of many fires,used it as a base camp,never venturing too far.I raided a bokogoblin camp and found a torch.
    I was nearly dead after battle but i lit my torch,by accident, and it was then i realized it provided just enough heat if i wasn't too high up or in the wind,eventually allowing me to confront the corrupted dragon,who i could only fight as long as i was near a hurriedly made camp fire.It was there i learned about the heat=wind mechanic and so i'd glide up and smash the dragon with my sword (no arrows left) eventually felling the great beast.
    BotWs mechanics make for incredible individual stories.

    EDIT: I've been informed that it's not completing shrines that scales up monsters; they scale up based on which/how many you kill. The end result is about the same--the more you go out and play the game the stronger they get--but I thought I should clear that up.
    And a small note: Monsters scale up over time, and nearly all areas are designed to be accessible at any time, though I should have clarified that some areas are meant to be easier or more difficult than others. Like, they do scale, but they don't scale as severely. Early areas will always have lower level baddies than those on the other ends of the map, even as you get stronger.

    • @Huanchee
      @Huanchee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      In response to another point you made, weapons in shrines do also scale if you don’t collect em. I found this out after going back to a shrine on the great plateau. Originally had a traverlers claymore, had no space so I left it. Came back later and it turned into a royal one.

      it's funny because it gave me a lot of replay value interest, I was so curious what level enemies were right at the beginning, all over the map. I actually went around in my second playthrough and wrote down which lynels were where, so I wouldn't miss out on seeing blue ones (and their weapons) the way I did in my first playthrough from being too chicken to confront them until it was too late.

      As someone who went to Faron and later the Getudo Desert first, I found the difficulty to be kind of weird at some points. In those places, I was getting a bunch of durians that I could cook to give me a billion extra hearts and getting elemental weapons pretty often. When I went to regions like Kakariko Village after seeing that I couldn't complete the Akkala Tech Lab quest, it felt really weird seeing all of the lesser baddies and weapons. This also persisted when I went into Necluda to an extent. Although it was slightly annoying, it was also a testament of as to how well the weapon system works. Over time, I had slightly worse hands dealt to me, and my old weapons broke, essentially adjusting me to take on the area.

    • @UnicornStorm
      @UnicornStorm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      or at least some other way to manipulate the system. maybe weapons only weaken when the enemy blocks or when you attack in the wrong way. maybe weaker weapons could have been used to enhance other weapons. or maybe there shouldn'T have been so many different damage variants, so that a weapon breaking doesn't equal to power loss but a switch-up in combat-style instead.

    A big thing that I think you missed with difficulty is the autosave when you get close to enemies. it is so nice that when you encounter an enemy you die to that you can just get back into it and try it again saving you that "oh shit when did I save last" moment but also doesn't force you to be in your menus saving all the time. It is honestly one of the biggest issues I have with games like Skyrim I would walk around schooling bandits and then run into an enemy that is harder than expected and then realizing I hadn't saved in a while. botw makes fighting enemies and the difficulty fun because you can just get back into the action and fix what you did wrong instead of needing to get back to where you were and THEN trying again.

    • @aardbei54
      @aardbei54 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Skyrim autosaves every time you go in a building, fast travel, wait, or open your inventory. And there's a reason the quicksave button exists

    • @raysay1818
      @raysay1818 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mr. Anonymous yeah that is true and I got to admit a lot of the "problem" I have with Skyrim is entirely my fault. quicksaving is so easy yet I just don't do it very often but the auto saving that Skyrim does I feel isn't often enough as well because you can travel one end of Skyrim to the other without doing any of the things that will trigger an autosave and even the save when you enter building is fine sometimes but with big long dungeons dying and needing to start over is problematic. Don't get me wrong I love Skyrim it's a great game and again I just forget to quicksave a lot of the time I was just saying that the auto save before combat in botw is one of those quality of life things that It improved upon from games like Skyrim.

    There's something I've noticed about the level design in BOTW that I don't think.. well.. ANYONE has mentioned.
    The level design, is in everything. And I mean absolutely everything. How tall is the cliff, how wide is the river, how many times do I need to stop? My theory is that they had premeasure distances planned out before building the world.
    I tended to notice this because I have a tendency to always do things the exact same way. I always seem to just barely make it to the ledges. Always. That's beyond coincidence.
    There's one place in particular that I always frequented. It was a Talos on the very top of a tall Rock Spire. The one that's nearby the shrine with the animal graveyard. Gliding from the closest point will take you to a lower ledge. You can then get up through various means. I think you can do it with the bare minimum stamina but you have to be very careful about getting from ledge to ledge. Also, when you have full stamina you can get from this ledge to the top in one go. Again, just barely making it. (I think the distances are also controlled all the way up through filling your stamina wheel but that's harder to prove.) But the biggest piece of evidence I have is when you have full stamina and Revali's Gale. When you use Revali's Gale you'll land in the middle of the pillar but then you'll start to climb and with a full stamina wheel you AGAIN just barely make it.
    The the distance of the mountains, the height of the cliff, the strength of Revali's Gale, the distances of the ledges, the timing of the stamina wheel, even.. the slope.. on the rocks.. HAD TO HAVE BEEN CALCULATED!!
    Everybody praises the level design around towers and particular castles but I don't think people realize it's in literally every rock, every tree, and every mountain.

    For me, the part that annoys me about the weapon breakage system isn't actually the system itself, but the way the game around it treats weapons as if they're valubable. I _hate_ opening a chest in a shrine just to find yet another weapon. I might hate it less if they'd programmed the ability to swap it with another weapon without having to go through the rigamarole of: close the chest, open the menu, scroll over to my weapons, pick the one I want to drop, drop it, open the chest again, and finally close the dialogue box that tells me about the weapon I already know is in the chest. But even then, being given a weapon will never feel as rewarding to me as a piece of ore or some valuable arrows or even Rupees given how valuable they are in this game.
    In a hypothetical sequel to Breath of the Wild (or even a spiritual successor), I'd like to see the game never use weapons as a reward for anything but exploration and engaging in combat. I'd love to see a wider variety of monster parts being find-able in chests, given how useful they are for upgrading clothing. Y'know what else would be cool? Being able to find a food dish in a chest, and being able to examine the dish to learn what ingredients were used to make it so I can then make more of it myself. _THAT_ would be so much more rewarding to me than getting a weapon for whatever I did to obtain that chest.

    • @higurashikai09
      @higurashikai09 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I also didn't enjoy the weapons in chests. I'd rather pick them up from enemies.
      I need treasure in my chests, damnit! Have them full of treasure that I need for upgrade or something. And have the chests reset every blood moon so that I actually have a reason to fight old bokoblin camps again.
      The chests could have a certain spawn rate of different items specific to their region, so if you're looking for an item, you don't know exactly where it is (unlike the swords that are just lying around in BotW). Oh! And treasure maps would be awesome (but those should probably not respawn).
      This would make opening chests exciting throughout the entire game!
      Yeah, completionists would probably cry, but I like replayability. I want to be able to go into shrines again and get rewards for trying out the puzzle again in a new way.
      As the game is, it gets emptier the longer I play, and I'm not a big fan of that. Respawning chests with actual loot and some random chance would keep the game more exciting, imo.
      (I like the idea of finding food, lol. But it would be a little weird to find food in an old chest: "Duh nuh nuh nuh! You got...a rotten egg!"
      What if inside was some sort of recipe? But it was framed as a puzzle of some sort? IKD, but I would definitely like a recipe book.)

      The only things that I would really like to see done differently are for one, if every weapon breaks, why do some weapons have limited spawns? There are like 2 or 3 weapons in the game that have a limited number of spawns, but can still break. That makes me mad. But more importantly, allow the blacksmiths to repair weapons that are badly damaged at a cost and with certain materials. Not only would that avoid screwing with the balance of the gameplay loop(since you would have to make it out of the early game to access a blacksmith), it would enhance. Now instead of dreading using your super buff lynel sword cuz you don't want to lose it, now you use it but pay an even closer eye on the durability, making sure it stops JUUUST before it breaks, cuz once it snaps you can't fix it. That would add a layer of strategy to the moment-to-moment gameplay

    • @tumamaencosplay
      @tumamaencosplay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Now unlike most complains about the system, yours and Z nerd's are actually fair, and can be fixed in a sequel, basically it's just balacing and refining the drops.
      Also, I agree ultra rare end-game weapons should be repairable in some form or anotther, but only true late-game weapons, and the ultra rare weapons CAN'T be the strongest in the game simply ebcause they can be repaired.

    • @znerd3664
      @znerd3664 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@tumamaencosplay I agree. I actually love the weapons system and agree with every word Arlo says about it being a fantastic mechanic. I just see that there some tweaks and refinements that would strengthen it further. I never really minded finding a weapon in a shrine, but I was often disappointed when my inventory was full and I found something much weaker than anything I had. But especially in the early game when I had weak and brittle stuff, I actually looked forward to seeing what weapon this shrine would give me. But once you leave the first like quarter of the game, I can admit that finding a weapon in a shrine means a lot less, and in late game it means nothing at all

    • @Nyahahameha
      @Nyahahameha 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Yes, I also like the durability system in itself. It's a lot of fun. Sometimes combat feels like I'm playing SuperHot but without the slow-motion mechanic when I get a good rhythm going. Take out this guy, smash my low durability weapon into this other guy, pick up the first guy's weapon, dodge an attack and flurry rush, take out my bow and freeze a dude to take the pressure off, finish off the previous guy-- the kind of thinking on my feet I get to do because of the durability system is so satisfying!
      Heck, just last night I was playing it some more, and I noticed it started to thunderstorm just as I entered an enemy camp, so I ran around outside the camp, scattered the metal weapon, bow, and shield I'd been using on the ground, and then lured all the enemies outside and ran around their attacks to the best of my ability. Soon enough, lightning struck one of the weapons I'd dropped and damaged ALL the enemies I was facing, and made them drop all their wooden weapons, letting me pick up the fight from there while continuing to dodge and draw them into lightning strikes aimed at the metal weapons they were now carrying. It was a blast.
      Let's not focus too much on shrine chests, though. Chests in enemy camps sometimes give weapons and that's underwhelming, too, especially when I already have an inventory full of them from clearing out the camp just a moment ago. I agee with FluteGeek's idea to have enemy camp chests respawn during blood moons, too. It was so disappointing to find out that they don't! It just seems like such a no-brainer, giving players a quick, repeatable activity they can do when they're short on time or energy - this would be such a huge benefit for the Switch version especially! I can't think of a single reason why they didn't do this other than just not thinking of it.
      I disagree that shrine chests should respawn, though. I really don't want there to be any reason for me to go back into a shrine I've already completed. Being able to do them multiple times would make repeat playthroughs of the game less exciting, because I'd become super familiar with shrines I revisit often. Plus, not having shrine chests respawn keeps the completionists happy, so everyone can have their thing.

    With regards to the lack of character leveling, I think you’re missing the point. Your character does not get inherently better as you progress through the game: you, as a player, naturally become more knowledgeable and experienced in combat as you go, figuring out better and more efficient ways to defeat enemies so that by the end of the game most enemies aren’t much of a problem. This is the theme of several bosses and even the Lionels and the final boss; you always had the means to beat them, but you lacked the knowledge about how to apply those means most effectively. You gain knowledge and do better through literal experience in exploring and combat, not through a numbers-based experience system built into the game.
    Eg, after fighting Lionels a few times you probably realized you can stagger them with headshots. Later, you probably figured out you could mount them for heavy damage while they were staggered. This is a basic example and there’s much more even to fighting Lionels, but by the end of the game your strategy for fighting them has drastically changed from “analyze attacks, slow-mo Dodge, repeat.” YOU have gotten better, so the fight goes much more smoothly.
    Also, I would argue that enemies scale up in difficulty far more than weapons scale up in power. White Bokoblins take more hits to kill with the best weapons than Red Bokoblins do with starting weapons.

    • @jacobdudley307
      @jacobdudley307 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      No, your sense of power progression is directly linked to the power of your weapons. Regardless of how smart you are, in Master Mode, you won't be beating the now-basic Blue Bokoblins outside where you wake up with the three or four sticks you can get right out of the start. And as for applying knowledge you get through the game: I argue that you're applying general game knowledge you gain from playing many other games. Headshots typically equal more damage, so you would naturally (assuming you've ever played or know much about FPSes) try to aim for the head of Lynels. And for bosses... well... their weakpoints glow brightly, standing out against their body, in a neon blue, much like with every previous Zelda game. Giving the game the benefit of the doubt, and we assume someone who hasn't had decades of experience with 3D Zelda games who employ that very tactic, the very fact that they stand out so heavily automatically draws you to target the area if you know how to use a bow, as the game teaches you explicitly with on-screen text.
      Yes, there's a learning curve to fighting some bigger enemies, but this curve is very shallow, with Lynels being the second sharpest (still not too complex) and Thunderblight Ganon being the hardest, purely because he's annoying. As for enemies outscaling weapon damage... yeah. They do. It's annoying. The enemies don't get harder, they stay the same: doofy, slow, telegraphed move sets that are pretty easy to deal with. This only exaggerates weapon durability, as some BASIC enemies require nearly a whole Savage Lynel Sword on Master Mode near the end. The enemies end up being bullet sponges, but without any other factors to add to challenge. This is artificial difficulty, and was a sloppy patch to a nearly laughably easy experience.

      The first lynel I found, can't remember exactly where it was now, I remember it always being able to kill me in one hit.
      Now, the thing is, I began associating BOTW with a game like Dark Souls at this point, so I figured the main challenge was that most enemies can kill me in one hit, so I just needed to practice till I just don't get hit.
      This was the same case ×10 when I fought a white maned lynel for the first time... And my best armor was the cold tunic and some pants.
      I did beat it, took almost an hour or so, but I did it.
      Then, I found a farming method for rupees that let me stockpile almost 20,000 of them.
      Then I bought every armor set I had seen till then and upgraded them at the fairy trees.
      I've only killed one divine beast so far, Vah Naboris, but at this point in the game for me, everything is pretty much on easy mode now.
      I've even mastered the shield reflect timing for Guardians, so I never have to waste ammo on them now except for an ancient arrow here and there.
      I plan on exploring everything and getting the master sword before I fight the rest of the divine beasts and beat Gannon.

Yay I got my 15th great flame sword, I'll just throw it on the stack of all the other amazing late game weapons. The only collectables that felt valuable were the different armor sets with permanent buffs because they weren't just going to break after 20mins of use.

      I feel like the game is missing a crafting system. Like, make it so those weapons can be broken down for components and used to repair, craft or improve other weapons and it might actually be worthwhile. I can imagine if the very best end-game weapons were only possible to get by gathering and breaking down multiple other high-end weapons (maybe a super flame greatsword could be crafted by combining a fully repaired flame greatsword with components from a few more of the same weapon) then those unwanted items would still have some purpose.
      At least, at some point if you got an item that lets you break down weapons into components without some kind of crafting station, it could prompt you whether to break down a new item if your inventory is full. Minimum wasted time and you still get something that would help you repair your good items.

      That is correct. But how many hours in were you? 80? 100? Many modern open world games have trained gamers into thinking that games should be able to be played forever. Botw isnt designed that way. Its designed to be played for however long you enjoy it and are challenged by it, then you choose to end it.

      This is my main issue with the weapon system: I would evade combat, ignoring the enemies, because the weapons I had were great and I knew the chests were worth nothing. This is also my main issue with BotW overall: Loot meant nothing in the late game.

      I think the game is missing a weapon poison/weapon oil system, a system for making consumable high damage items, a system for making traps and a weapon enchanting system(one where the enchantment actually heavily changes how the weapon behaves). It also lacks a significant number of ways to deal damage without using up your weapon, with the bomb ability being useless late game. I also think that the huge lack of weapon variety is a problem, where the only difference between weapons is usually just a damage number.

      There are two systems that would fix this issue. The first is my personal favorite, a hunger/fullness bar when you use items. Things like stamina potions or buffs fill fullness slightly, while eating a big healing meal fills it massively. It slowly goes down over real time and you CANNOT EAT AGAIN until it hits 0. This system was used in Muramasa: The Demon Blade.
      The second system is animation times for healing as in Monster Hunter or Dark Souls. This system would also be fine, but I would prefer the first.

    Totally agree with you. The fact that you can just walk up to any enemy to engage them in combat and the that almost everything is optional really appealed to me. It made everything feel much more personal and made me feel the value of my choices. Like you said, the great plateau was an amazing tutorial and it never even felt like one. Exploring the world never felt like a slog like in some other games since I was doing it for myself and because I wanted to know what lay beyond.And they never give you a piece of equipment and throw an enemy at you designed just for that. Botw is definitely my favorite game of all time and it's definitely one that truly incorporated the open world concept. Kudos to Nintendo and let's hope the sequel will be just as natural and unrestricted.
    Lastly, the small shrines provide and excellent break from the exploration and adventure in the world. Spending ten minutes in a well-crafted visual and mechanical puzzle really refreshes the game and makes it different from others.

      CharlesUnleashed no, he will only use it until he get a better weapon.
      In that understanding, nintendo have two ways to make players switch weapons: stick and carrot.
      Carrot, would be offering a better weapon so they would switch
      Stick, would be breaking their weapon so they're forced to switch
      Most people eventually settles with the kinda-permanent master sword anyway. Not only for its powers, but moreover for its durability. So gamers know that carrot actually works, sadly nintendo went with stick.
      Many people have advised "dull weapon" systems, or "break but repairable at towns" systems. Each suggestions will still achieve the same thing, but less punishing.
      Heck, similar system is already in the game: you could always rebuild champion weapons! So we know that it's actually possible, they just opted to not give us the option.
      What really bugs me is some really rare weapons with insane rng bonus attacks that only appears like in every hundreds of hours. What am i supposed to do with this awesome once in a lifetime 95 atk mighty lynel crusher?? Use it to kill a bokoblin?? Fight ganon for the 100th time just to honor this one weapon?? Fucking throw it to the bottom of lake hylia??
      What's the point of rare rng bonuses if all weapons are expendables anyway?? Might as well don't have rng attack bonus drops in the first place.

      But i can see where you came from. You probably care more for the journey. You don't mind losing them at the end, as long as they're gone for a good reason. In this case: using them till they exhausted their use time, or selling them for money.

      The game is horribly designed in the progression category. Instead of making the enemies scale with your weapons and armor, they have a flat damage and health value.
      That means a player that explores for weapons can slice through every boss and enemy
      and a player that just goes straight for the dungeons is gonna get destroyed.

    Only thing I don't like about the Weapon Break System is running out of weapons for a challenging fight and needing to flee the fight, not because I was not skilled enough to defeat the enemy but because most of my weapons had low durability. Honestly the best fix for this problem would be to allow the player to fight enemies with their fists that only deal 1 damage. This would create a nice incentive for "pro players" to go through the whole game using just their fists, but it would also allow players to take on more challenging enemies if they were skilled enough.

    • @DjFrexira

    My biggest gripe with the combat system is how not-technical it is. There are hardly any special inputs, fun "glitches" you can do (like the bow-spin), and weapons are quite often the same thing. The Royal Claymore is just a more-powerful Rusty Claymore. There are no special properties. I would have loved to see, for example, a flail in BotW. Bring in a warhammer for enemies with good armor! Make enemies that fly so high above you that you can't use a regular, one-handed sword. Make it so that you have to use a pike, or something.

      This is the point I think he missed when people say the weapon break system forces weapons upon you.
      Good game design would make you want switch weapons yourself. Like you said you could see an armored enemy and be like shit time for my warhammer because the sword doesn't work well against armoured enemies etc etc.
      Dark souls has loads of weapons and half the fun is playing around with them and building different builds.
      The freedom to just sort of play around with your weapons doesn't really exist here because doing so will lead to them breaking.

Even whistle running in BotW (that glitch where holding the whistle button, down on the dpad, and spamming sprint let's you sprint without consuming stamina because you're still technically whistling) was really useful at points. But at the same time, I don't think you can really take away points from a game that doesn't have glitches like that. It's just not a valid critique. Like, what, "This game is too polished. Every single bug or unintended behavior is gone, and the game works flawlessly 100% of the time. This is bad."?

      @@HyenaFox I'm not asking for "glitches," at least not in name. I just want more techniques, is all. Looking back, I definitely had loads of fun with Breath of the Wild. But there are issues with the game that shouldn't be ignored if there's to be a similar game in the future. Upgrading armor for the most part is the difference between being one shot by everything or practically taking no damage. Folks should check out Joseph Anderson's vid on BotW for a great elaboration on this.

      Also, enemy variety is usually brought up all the time. But aside from that think about how much of joke Guardians become when you get over their laser- their one and only way of attacking. These things should of had at least some sort of swiping attack with their legs to further incentivize cutting them off. Literally anything else to go along with the laser. It's interesting the take he had on the game. I've played every Zelda game (Minus remasters), and personally I found breath of the wild to be one of the easiest games among them. I think the excess of food is comparable to hearts scattered in other games, and the fact that you can face 'combat' in many, many different ways makes fighting much less tedious (And thus less difficult to impatient people like me), in comparison to zelda games of the past that force specific responses. Plus, if you're a strategist like myself, you know the more options you have, the more powerful you are. This zelda's link is one of the most OP in that respect - and enemies rarely have any 'immunities' and can just simply be beaten down... thus making the game easier.

Then you realize you can cook a meal that gives you 20 hearts beyond your maximum health, and that you can carry 60 of them, giving you over 1 thousand hearts. It defeats the purpose of getting new heart containers. Old Zelda games had bottles you could fill with potions to restore hearts, and you could only carry 5 bottles or so. I beat Ganon without any of the divine beasts and without the master sword easily. (no, I'm not bragging, I am not good, I just spammed food that gave me hundreds of hearts over my max. Weapon durability was my main limiation, so I did have to run about finding some strong weapons at least)

    With the exception of Mipha's Spear, all of their weapons are good.
    Daruk's Greatsword is the highest damaging blunt weapon in the game. Stone Talus take effective damage from blunt weapons, meaning you have a Talus Killer.
    Urbosa's Sword and Shield is pretty good too. The sword is on par with end game swords like Royal Swords. And the shield is top tier in stopping power and durability.
    Ravali's Bow is arguably the best bow in the game. 32 damage x3 shots, plus longer shot range and built in Quick Shot. The only bows that even come close to it, are the Ancient Bow and Savage Lynel Bow.
    Just thought a well-versed gamer such as yourself should know this info for future reference. :)

I throw away two or three 36 damage Royal Swords every play session because I have no room for them in my inventory. In this part of the endgame I see no reason to pay in diamonds to get a 32 damage sword.

      i appreciate that they put the lynel tho. Its only in master mode, and from what ive seen and experienced people who play master mode already played the normal mode, which means they know parrying, perect dodges and overall combat. In master mode, you get way better weapons in the great plateau (like a knights claymore with attack or durability bonus) and its totally possible to beat the lynel. If you're not ready for him, you can just ignore him. Lynels are smart creatures that dont attack you until you show signs of being a threat (they only attack you if you hve your weapon drawn, otherwise if you stay near them without moving they stare at you for ten seconds and daw their weapon and give you another ten seconds, if you didnt leave they take it as a sign that you want to fight) . They do not attack you if you are passing nearby, which means that the player has complete control over what happens.

    I can agree to many of the points Arlo made here but the one disagreement I wanna bring mention to is the brittle weapons mechanic. Arlo made a point of addressing the issues people have with this mechanic but the 2 big problems I have are a lack of a weapon durability gauge and a maintenance system.
    I'm not against the idea of weapons breaking upon depletion of their durability but having no idea where your weapon's durability is at unless it's full or critical is annoying. Say I have a high tier weapon that I used and then switched out for something else, then I find a new weapon that isn't as strong but obviously brand new, do I throw out my stronger weapon for this weaker one because it's got more weapon HP? My strong weapon could be one hit from critical or one hit under brand new or anywhere in between and I have no idea. If something is finite I shouldn't have to make notes to keep track of how much I had left. Imagine just being told how many arrows you could hold and having to keep track of the number you actually have yourself. To me, that's pretty damn annoying.
    As for the idea of weapon maintenance that's something that would add a whole new level of depth to your item management and overall play style. Say there's a blacksmith in one of the villages and you can pay him to work on your weapons, either giving him materials to enhance your weapons or just having him fix them when their durability gets low. You're out on a raid and one of your favorite weapons is about to break, do you stash it away until you can get back to have it fixed or do you throw it away to collect a new weapon you found? What if certain blacksmiths only specialize in certain kinds of weapons and you have to find them and complete a side quest for them before they'll work for you? This would allow for a more wholesome and open-ended progression system. Do you want to sneak into Hyrule Castle and loot around for strong gear or do you want to do quests for these characters who in turn will make you stronger? "The choices are yours and yours alone!" (Olmec 1993)
    The best example I can give on a weapon HP system done well and where the above ideas come from is one of my favorite games of all time, Dark Cloud. You build up your weapons by equipping them with different materials that affect their individual stats and attributes, and when certain stats reach certain thresholds you can transform your weapon into something stronger. But all weapons have durability which you have to maintain. The game has items which can restore your weapon's hp either manually (you have to enter your menu to use) or automatically (you can equip the item to your character and your weapon hp will be restored when it hits 0, however you can only equip a few items at a time and the auto restoratives are a lot more expensive then the manual stuff) and if you're careless enough to let a weapon you spent time building up break then that's entirely on you.
    Dark Cloud is an early PS2 game so its combat has definitely aged, but while BotW's combat may be much more fluid and satisfying, I'd still rather play Dark Cloud for its (IMO) superior implementation of similar mechanics. When I play Dark Cloud I feel like I'm getting stronger, like I'm actually progressing. In BotW when I come across a tough challenger I don't think "I need to get stronger", I think "I need to find better stuff".
