      Hey Scotty! Great video! Can you do a video with like a list of 3 or 5 used luxury cars that you think are great buys? I know you support toyota and Lexus so maybe you can do a video on the best used models? I am looking for a used luxury car like a 2009 Lexus LS 460 awd and would like some advice. Thanks!

      Awesome video scotty. My question is since bigger engines have diminishing returns weight wise, what about longevity wise. My theory is with a smaller engine, it will have to work harder compared to an engine with more cylinders of similar or identical displacement or horsepower. As a result, a bigger engine with more power strokes per second, would inherently strain less during the same conditions thus lasting longer. This In my opinion would also affect the longevity of driveline components too.

      @@joaocerqueira9902 It is not a free lunch, having a bigger engine your idle consumption and parasitic drains and consumption when accelerating, as well as rolling resistance goes up. Driving an underpowered car just means you drive differently. If your argument held any truth, trucks would get into accidents all the time. Passenger cars ar 40% of all accidents, small lorries 38%, the remaining 22% includes trucks! So driving less offensive and planning further ahead is the main trick to avoid accidents. The mere fact that you have been "saved" by a powerful engine, suggests that you take unnecessary chances (There are exceptions)

    Scotty, you forgot about the Chevy Sprint, a 3-cyl compact built for Chevy by Suzuki back in the mid-1980s. A co-worker had one and used it as his daily driver. Worked great for him driving 50-60 miles per day on the Southern California freeways, I don't recall he had any problems with it in the 4 years we worked together. Also, Yamaha made a 3-cyl motorcycle with a 650cc engine back in the early 1980s. I had one and it was my 'daily driver'. Not fast by any measure, but very reliable and very easy to maintain, and no excess vibration from the 3-cyl engine.

    Back when I was starting out I bought a brand new Metro for the grand sum of $6700.00. Air conditioning, power brakes, and nothing else. It was the hatchback, and I'll never forget my wife and I going on a 3 day 1st anniversary trip to the mountains. Round trip with the AC blowing...$20.00 in gas. 47 mpg and I still came home with nothing but less than a dollar change in my pocket.
    But hey, young, dumb and great memories. My daughter was born 9 months later!
    I drove that car for four years, sold it to my dad (he travelled a lot selling insurance) and he drove it for four more years, then sold it to a preacher who drove it a couple years and gave it to a woman who was broke and needed a car. She totaled it, but that 3 cylinder never gave any trouble and I only remember it being a great little motor. We changed the timing belt every 70,000 miles per the manual and it just kept going.

      I am also a Geo owner, and sadly all the facts aren't true. The Geo Metro was NOT the first car to have a 3 cylinder motor as a mass-produced car. Doesn't anyone remember the 1985 Chevrolet Sprint??? The Sprint had the first 3 cylinder engine and got over 55 mpg. I remember seeing them at Chevrolet showrooms and they were NOT produced by Geo or any other car manufacturer. If you're gonna state facts, you need to get them right!

      The Chevy Sprint was a Suzuki Forsa. It was carburated and had 49hp. I drove one for 3 years. Geo Metro was a Suzuki Swift. Here in Canada they also sold the Swift has a Chevy Sprint and Pontiac Firefly, before introducing the Geo Brand.

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, but when the Chevrolet Sprint was being sold in the United States in 1985, Suzuki's weren't imported into this country. They came later. So to say that the Geo Metro was the first 3 cylinder engine car sold in the United States isn't correct.

    The Ford three cylinder engines are good little motors. The Ford 125 1.0 is smooth and free revving and can pull even a Focus along at a good rate, even better in th Fiesta. When it first came out in 2011 I drove one in a Focus and could not believe how good it was despite being sceptical. The 1.5 three in th Fiesta ST is a great little motor too. It's quick and it sounds great too.

    My dad got 2 Geo metros for him and my sister. My sister got the 4 cylinder automatic sedan and my dad the 3 cylinder hatchback. The 3 cylinder seemd to accelerate slightly faster than the 4. Plus the mpg was better it was 50ish mpg and the 4 only got 29. I hated the 4 cylinder Geo's, moped's kept passing. Although it's hilarious to rev it in front of nicer cars like mustang's or a Corvette. You'll kill someone making them laugh so hard. Just make sure u have serious look on your face when u do it.

    • @steve_put_this_here
      @steve_put_this_here 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Halibaster - if that were the case, modern small engines would make little horsepower as well, since they're carrying even more emissions-reducing equipment.
      The old engines had a lower power-to-displacement ratio for one major reason - efficiency. Back in the day they didn't have computer-aided-design-built blocks and heads, camshaft phasing, gasoline direct injection, optical/digital ignition, computer-controlled fuel injection or the wealth of knowledge current engineers have regarding camshaft design.
      If you look at a near-equal comparison in displacement - a 5.0 "H.O." Ford from 1985 versus a 2018 5.0 "Coyote", you will see nearly double the power output from the same displacement - this with a host of emissions equipment and stringent OBD-III compliance.

I realize this will change the handling characteristics. (I race road course, I’m familiar with brake drive and suspension stuff) I live in Houston, as you know the roads are pretty tough. Should just suck it up or get something with a longer wheelbase and more travel. If I do go through with changing springs and dampers, where should I start with the research? Thanks.

    Scotty, been watching a lot of your content lately and you have been mentioning that automatic transmission (AT) rebuilds are expensive. ATs also seem to be a main focus on the longevity of a vehicle. Is it possible, cheaper or feasible to simply replace an AT like an engine swap? Before it was called the Geo Metro does Suzuki was called the Chevy sprint 1988 I bought one brand new off the lot stick shift. It was a much lighter car the Geo Metro so that 58 hp was just plenty if you wrapped it up to 6000 RPMs and usually would blow the doors off of other small cars because the owners were afraid to REV it up that high and hold it there. 110 miles an hour was its max speed but it actually sounded and became very smooth at that speed the engine was a smooth as a singer sewing machine. I had 289,000 miles on that engine and transmission flawless very dependable. I added the Amsoil double bypass micron filter what change my 4 quarts to9 quarts of oil and change my oil every 50,000 miles. Drove that car between 50 and 100,000 miles a year because of my job. It almost got 60 miles to the gallon in that car with a easily made it over 300,000 miles if you didn’t get hit and totaled out. And yes I am a mechanic and I was young at that time and all the other mechanics made fun of me for buying a three cylinder but while their cars were long gone in the graveyard mine was still running.

    I heard running your engine on just gasoline Vapors is too lean and you'll burn valves, but if this is true then how come you can run it on propane and other gases and not burn your valves. Please answer this for me. thanks.

    • @shahen961
      @shahen961 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi , I can't really give a "technical" answer , but I had my car running on propane and it made less power than with the 91 Petrol , so I assume those just don't have the burning power to brake anything.

    • @jayminde5864
      @jayminde5864 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The BTU for propane is around 91,000 and gasoline BTUs are right around a 115,000 which explains why you didn't make as much power on propane but I wonder if gasoline fumes carries the same BTUs.

    • @steve_put_this_here
      @steve_put_this_here 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Truth of the matter: its only the vaporized gasoline that burns. If you introduce vaporized gasoline and air at the correct Stoichiometric ratio into your engine, it would be completely fine, and there would be no burnt valves. In a sense, that's how a carburetor works - a fine mist of gasoline is drawn from the venturi into the air flowing through the carburetor; this mist vaporizes as it travels through the intake and into the cylinders. The heat and swirl introduced during the transit to the cylinder vaporizes the majority of the gas before it enters the cylinder.
      A 'burned valve' is a sort of a catch-all for a valve that has experienced damage as a result of the valve's failure to conduct heat away through the seal against the seat. A valve burns mostly as a result of either poor seal/contact with the seat from an over-rich condition introducing carbon buildup or the damaging misfires that can occur as a result of that over-lean condition you're thinking about.

      My Friend had a V8 Range Rover that ran 100% on LPG. no petrol . no petrol tank. just lots of LPG Tanks. It ran Spot on. The Oil was Cleaner & it was half price to run.

    I actually have a Ford Ecosport 1.5 3 cylinder with automatic transmission since they've released this new model in Brazil 3 years ago. I'm still with it and its an amazing vehicle.
    It's robust, have decent fuel consumption, good for everything that I've tried (city, road, country, towing a medium sized boat and a big jet ski, wet pavement, mud and everything). This 6 gears do a great job even if you drive on D. The only bad things that I could say about the car are that Ford closed factory here on BR, so it got the sales value a little low for who already owned one; here the starting version comes with a small screen radio with no rear camera; also here, it have only 2 front airbags (it could have 4 or 5 like its rivals).
    If you think about getting one, go for it with no regrets.

      Joe Sunder baby the transmission. Perform regular maintenance and fluid changes. Also be very picky about where you get your car worked on, because not a lot of mechanics know how to work on German makes in the U.S. Also use Volkswagen specific fluids when you can, because Volkswagens can be finicky when you use the cheap stuff sometimes.
