    Toyota has released a Corolla with the same power-per-litre as a Ferrari 488 Pista.
    Unsurprisingly, it’s not the sort of Corolla your gran would drive. It’s called the GR Corolla and the engineers at Gazoo Racing have managed to squeeze an amazing 300 horsepower from a 1.6-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder.
    That’s seriously impressive power for such a small production engine without the help of an electric motor.
    So how have they done it? Let’s get into it.
    After a little bit of time away from making performance cars, Toyota has been chucking them at us left, right and centre.
    However, you can’t please everyone and some people have been annoyed that some of them haven’t been Toyota enough.
    The GT86, which has been with us for 10 years, was jointly developed with Subaru, and then the legendary Supra name was resurrected after almost 20 years, albeit in collaboration with BMW.
    So, for anyone disappointed with the sharing of parts with another manufacturer, Toyota then came out with the GR Yaris. The stubby little hot hatch was inspired by old school homologation specials like the Celica GT-Four.
    Four-wheel drive, manual and turbocharged. Just what enthusiasts like you and me wanted to see from Toyota.
    Rather than a more traditional 2-litre turbo four-cylinder under the bonnet, Toyota went with a smaller 1.6-litre turbocharged 3 pot that churned out just shy of 270 horsepower.
    That engine has now found its way into this larger GR Corolla, and although the version in the Yaris is a bit less powerful, it’s still hugely impressive.
    The G16E-GTS engine is a 1.6 which is actually quite big considering how many cylinders it has. If you look at most 3 cylinder engines they’ll be much smaller capacity like 1 litre or even less.

    Regarding the Koenigsegg Gemera, I think some more information is important:
    They achieve their 600hp with their 3cyl TFG Engine with the help of two turbos, a displacement of 2L and their camless design. It doesn't use camshafts and regular valves but rather pneumatic actuators which can be controlled individually.

    • @N1lav

      That's right, but freevalve tech really is the future; less parts, more tuning control, better reliability more power.. what's not to like? They have also rated the TFG engine to still output about 280hp if it was naturally aspirated. that's freaking insane for 3 cylinders!

    • @jamesdellaneve9005

      Simplicity is the key to that engine. I have a 2014 Chevy Volt. The gas motor is only 90HP and it’s fine for most conditions. Imagine how small the Koenigsegg could be for 100HP? Hybrids are great for cross country driving. Don’t need all of the charging stations. The US is big. Most all electrics work for city commuting.

    We live in the time of crossovers, companies need to share development cost. If they don't just like we added the Evo and the STI to the list, the rest will follow.

But only having that circle of aluminum as the wall of each cylinder isn't as strong as a closed deck design. The closed deck design only has coolant passages scattered through out the block with most of it being solid. Maybe that will help non-car people understand it a little better. Wouldn't a small power plant with such high output be overworked from the get-go and destined to a short life? How long will it last??

    306hp PEAK hp, I wanna see the powerband on a dyno, that turbo lag probably makes the boost avalible in 3-6 buisness days.

    • @deadeye0o
      @deadeye0o 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a yaris owner i can say that the boost kicks in at around 3k rpm, not too terrible of a turbo lag for how much bar it produces then
      Also tbh i like that, the 3k are reched fast and then the kick you get from the back
      Typical japanese drive feeling

      As another GR driver I can vouch that the Yaris picks up speed from low revs far more quickly than does a Golf R. Mit May be a weight thing, but the 3 pot is relatively far more torquey.

    • @gwot
      @gwot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, peak torque is from 3k to 5.5k, so it'll feel fast, peak HP is at 6.5k but im sure it's close to it a lot earlier.

    I believe this engine is actually capable of churning out 450 bhp (335.5 kW) reliably. That's a testament to the engineers at Gazoo Racing.

      @@beenmicrophone5817 It appears that the engine block was *WAY* overengineered for durability, probably because of its intended used in a WRC rally car. I've read that the engine is capable of generating 450 bhp quite reliably.

    The optimum size of a cylinder is about 500cc. The problem with 3 cylinders is engine balance

    • @loludied552
      @loludied552 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      3 cylinders in general generate a lot more vibration than 4 cylinders especially in 4 stroke form which most car engines use today.
      The reason for the massive increase in vibration is that 3 cylinders in cars also lack a power strokes for 25% on average for each crank revolution which causes the crank to decelerate and accelerate resulting in more vibration.
      Only advantages of 3 cylinders is that it’s a bit smaller for its displacement improving packaging, and manufacturers can go in a parts bin and create a 3 cylinder as a smaller engine.

    • @gerardmontgomery280
      @gerardmontgomery280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Triumph make some awesome 3 cylinder engines with T plane cranks which dish out amazing midrange torque. These aren't parts bin engines with a piston looped of though, they're built from the ground up. Their flat plane version can get 180bhp from a naturally aspirated 1.2 litre.

    • @russellstokke6888
      @russellstokke6888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gerardmontgomery280 Yeah but that's a motorcycle. Cars are basically tractors in comparison. A Panigale can get 234hp out of 1 liter. Bikes don't need nearly as much torque to move because they weigh as little as 10% of "performance" cars, so they can make huge power numbers by trading torque for revs, which is what the good lord intended.
