Plastic Welding Bumper Repair

  • I am preparing my car to be vinyl wrapped and needed to repair my front bumper. I figured I'd show one way of doing this repair with a plastic welding kit. The results were surprisingly good. The mended area seemed to be as strong as the surrounding area. If you have any questions, please let me know. I will demonstrate how to perform the same repair using epoxy in a future video. I have more videos of my car having parts installed & driving on the way, so stay tuned!!

      It turned out pretty well. Obviously I did some major slacking on the finish work, but I'll be doing my other bumper shortly & will show that as well.

    This is ironic. 2 weeks ago I decided I want to get a blue WRX or STI, now I’m seeing them everywhere including random diy videos I watch 😂😂 Synchronicity... Thanks for the tips!..

    At my work we use a flexible bondo made for plastic bumpers if you want to use some of that stuff works really great at filling low spots I can get the name of it for you

    Learning how to do this while learning body work as an apprentice right now pretty interesting stuff in my opinion

    • @hawkeyestiguy
      @hawkeyestiguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice. Good luck with the apprenticeship!! I'm mediocre at body work. Haha. Not awful, but certainly no Michelangelo. Haha.

    So tbh great job as a person who works on cars there was a few steps you missed you could of used a body filler to smooth it all out and more sanding how ever great job once again

    Very informative. I know this is an old video but if you’re still active on here, do you think the method would work if I wanted to fuse two different bumpers into one?

    • @hawkeyestiguy
      @hawkeyestiguy  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn’t trust it for that. The best way to achieve that would be with fiberglass & resin.

  • @FlossyZach

    Yo man, what’s the black stuff you used for the sealer? I’m going to need some of that stuff to do this project! Thanks

    • @hawkeyestiguy
      @hawkeyestiguy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There were some plastic strips included with the plastic welding kit. I also used pieces of the bumper as well-there were some tabs that were no longer needed. You just have to make sure that it is either the same plastic as the material you are working on, or at least that the plastic is compatible with the type of plastic you are working on. 👍🏼

    • @FlossyZach
      @FlossyZach ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hawkeyestiguy okay thanks man. So the black pieces that were melted though were the ones that came with the kit from harbor freight?

    @miaandria9487 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What do you call that black plastic that uve melted?

    • @hawkeyestiguy
      @hawkeyestiguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is plastic welding filler rod. It came with the kit, but can also be found online & on Amazon. They have different plastics available so you want to match the same material as what you are repairing.

    I've tried everything to repair my front bumper but all the plastic supports are broke soo I think I might just have to cut my losses and buy a new one lol

  • @lukerogers78
    @lukerogers78 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why isn't that bumper cut up to fit a front mount yet?

    • @hawkeyestiguy
      @hawkeyestiguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I don't care for the extra turbo lag & I'm not short on hot boy points. Lol. I'm running an ETS topmount & it supports my power level just fine. 👍🏻

      Karol Batérie I made this video as a quick demonstration on the process. More time can be spent smoothing things out and you can also use Bondo and sand everything smooth. I will not be using this bumper on my car so I did not care to spend the extra time making it look perfect. Thanks for watching.

  • @harrybalzak3909
    @harrybalzak3909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why are you making a video if you don't know what you re doing. PLEASE go to your local autobody shop! Don't believe everything you see. Please take into consideration that someone else will buy your car afterwards. This job is very poorly made...you can see all the defects in the paint.

    • @hawkeyestiguy
      @hawkeyestiguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harry Balzak I do know what I am doing. This is a temporary fix & is intended for those who do not want or need to go to a body shop. This bumper is effed & will be replaced soon. It would cost far more for a body shop to repair it than to just buy a new one. This was a quick how-to video to show the principle of it... Also, I am never selling this car, so it’s not an issue.
