Is there any spesific point in using the zinc here, except for that in also came from the battery? It doesn't seem so great that it is messily melting into the plastic. Wouldn't a piece of copper or steel be better? Maybe I am missing something.

Yes, if you have stainless steel mesh available then use it, stainless steel mesh is best for plastic welding, thank you!
