I purchased my Original when I decided to back for my graduate degree in 2010. I kid you not, I have usd mine at least five days a week for the past 11 years! I have never thought “this is a real nice bag. I should be gentle with it.” It was first used as a school pack. It’s been used to carry legal documents into boardrooms. It’s been used as a diaper bag (two kids since then). And a daily brief case. My favorite use? A large packing cube slides right into the main compartment to make for a perfect overnight bag. Yep, it’s expensive. But you talk often about cost per use. I’ve shouldered this bag THOUSANDS of times. I’m on pennies per use. And it will only go down from here. Maintenance : I have a pair of Redwing boots that are considered my Winter Boot. When the days start to get longer and warmer in Mississippi, I set aside an evening to condition the boots, put trees in them, and wish them well for a few months. At the same time, I condition the straps of the Filson bag. That’s it. Go get one!
I’m on my second one now. First one lasted me almost 10 years ( I’m rough on it too ) Purchased my second one in cinder color at 1/2 price during their summer sale 🤙 Great bag.
Excellent review. I purchased my Filson original briefcase (tan) brand-new and have enjoyed it for two years now as a construction project manager working 5 - 6 days a week. It remains brand new in appearance with hardly a sign of wear. Super tough bag. Looking forward to seeing that well earned patina that only use with time will bring.
I bought my Filson briefcase new from Filson back in 2000. It still looks and performs great 21 years later. Mine is the otter green color and it hides the dirt better than the tan. Nice review by the way. You’re spot on. It’s a classic and is timeless.
I bought mine second hand for the equivalent of $150, and it had a lovely patina. This was 2 years ago, it hasn't failed me once. All the seams, the hardware, the leather ... everything is just phenomenal and shows no weakness! I just love it!
If you are looking for a step up from the Filson original briefcase, I cannot recommend enough a bag from Vermilyea Pelle. My side by side comparison would be similar to RW Iron Rangers (Filson) vs. Nick's Urban Loggers (Vermilyea Pelle). Both are great but one punches a bit higher
I love these ads! I hope you and yours are healthy and well. Glad to see that you are continuing to make awesome content. I'm an American over here in France. There are times when your channel is just the taste of home. Thank you
@@CarlMurawski The whole hipster thing has been good for the vintage movement here but, sadly, vintage doesn't always mean quality. My nephews in England and Australia were thrilled to receive my old redwings and Georgia boots, cleaned and shined of course. After I realized that I could have made a fortune selling them locally! No worries, glad to keep it in the family.

I just looked it up in my records... I got my Filson brief case new in 2001. I found it on-line at a surveyor supply company and paid $122 delivered. In terms of security, the brief case also came with a small pad lock that let's you lock the two zipper pulls together. I've still got the pad lock... and the keys! I've treated the leather over the years and it is supple with no cracks. I carried the brief case to work, on business trips, to myriad volunteer meetings, and even used it as an additional piece of luggage for personal travel. I found the shoulder strap to be in the way more than it was helpful so it hasn't been on the brief case since shortly after I got it. The brief case now wears a patina for sure!
Great review! I was in the market for a bag but didn’t want to get into leather bags just yet and this helped me out a lot. That ad spot was hilarious. Keep up the great work.
I've had my Filson Briefcase for a few years now. I usually used it for carrying my school books and computer to the library or coffee shop. However, with both of those mostly closed in my area, my Filson bag was collecting dust. I recently got promoted in my company which requires me to carry my laptop and forms around to clients house and to the office. This briefcase definitely is well made, and it makes me feel classy and professional around my coworkers. Already getting compliments, too!
Thanks, Carl. Your content is excellent, and the Filson Original Briefcase looks like a great versatile bag. However, I already have three leather briefcases. My favorite is the Allen Edmonds American Grain Collection - Slim Briefcase ($495). I also have the matching duffle bag ($750). Both are high quality, similar to Allen Edmonds shoes and boots, which I love. Like you, I love real leather and great craftsmanship.
I would love to see you do a review on the Alden Indy boots, I have a pair from an alden retailer called Alden of Carmel and they have a pair of indy boots with a 360 welt and a commando sole and it is perfection in a boot
@@CarlMurawski I wear a 10.5 so the combination last is an E/C instead of the smaller B heel and it fits beautifully, it feels very similar to my Urban loggers actually but maybe a bit thinner in the instep.
I love my black 257 which is just a little bigger w/ a few more pockets. 4 years old next week and it still looks like new. Always get compliments. Got it on close out from Hank’s Clothing for less than 1/2 price and wish I had bought 2!
I have the plague pendant from Clocks and colour, I pretty much wear it every day. To the video, I never knew I needed to hear Carl do an east coast accent and now I want more.
Now that mustache for the barkeeper alone was worth a watch Carl lol. I've gotta say some of those rings are pretty badass! What the hell, worth a shot!
I’ve carried mine for about a year now. Still looks as good as new, but the leather has broken in nicely. Brand new, the handles and shoulder strap are super stiff. But after just a couple weeks, the leather started to soften up and they got more comfortable. I got the bag new, and in the same color way. I would imagine that it will take many years for mine to show and wear. Mostly because I don’t put it through any extreme use or abuse. Definitely is a lifetime bag.
There is also the frank Clegg sunbrella option for a little over 400 in the one of a kind bag options. Also, what are you going to use to condition that leather on your Filson?
I went down to the Seattle flagship store today from Vancouver Canada. It’s 450 usa so about 600 Canadian. Pretty pricey. It is nice though. My biggest problem was I couldn’t decide which colour between the tan, green and navy I would like best.
Try Vermilyea Pelle. You will never go back to Filson for briefcases. I still buy Filson jackets and shirts as they are fantastic. They've cut corners on their new briefs unfortunately with the leather cardboard-like.
I count over 30 filson bags, backpacks, luggage, etc. The 256 is an ideal edc briefcase as well as the tote bags and 24 /48 h tin cloth bags. In Germany the Prices unfortunately are ridiculous. In comparison Croots bags is honestly better value for the money.
I've had Filson luggage and their wool and tin cloth forever (30 years at least), often I'll pass down an item to my (19 year old) son...This is one of those - my son daily carries this briefcase (olive color) - he uses it for his MacBook, papers, etc. He leaves for college in a few months and will take it with him. He has really used this - takes it camping, out around our (horse) farm, when hie doing blacksmithing, etc. it is a STURDY, RUGGED, FUNCTIONAL bag. Honestly my sone does not give a tinkers darn about the looks of it - he likes/appreciates the functionality of the bag and the fact he can just USE it and not worry about it. The materials (including the leather) is built for function first, not style...that is what sets this apart. My son also carries the Filson field bag, keeps it in his truck - that bag is great too...these products are the OLD SCHOOL Filson...not a lot of the new overpriced stuff geared for hipsters. There is a difference in expensive and a good value...sometimes a more expensive items is a better value...this an example of a GREAT VALUE.
I bought one with a broken zipper for $40 dollars. I sent it to Filson. They couldn't fix it so they sent me a new bag. Also the bag had a couple of holes on the side and bottom
...I do not have the briefcase, but I have not one but 2 rucksacks Filson journeyman...I love those things. The green is more filled for winter, and the tan one prepared for summer! They are amazing!!!
Great video. I love the humorous commercials. I agree about Filson having one of the best briefcases around. As you said they got it right. You mentioned alternative brands. Another I'd like to suggest is the Superior Street brief case by Duluth Trading Company. I'm not sure how it would stack up side by side with the Filson. But, it's a pretty good product for the price. It might be a budget conscious alternative for someone like a college student. Keep up the good work! 👍
I’ve had the exact same bag for 15+ years, really been happy with it. I’ll never be able to wear it out, it will be with me to the end. I applied Folsom wax to the exterior about a year ago ..

While I was watching this I was looking at mine that is sitting by the door. It's a great bag. I got mine in college because my messenger bags were getting so loaded down with books that they were literally breaking, just for two classes. I still have the other ones but haven't touched them in over a decade. I waterproof the canvas once a year or so and use leather wax on the bridal leather but I probably don't have to. It still looks brand new. I carry it for both my jobs and everywhere else. It's worth the investment. You can buy three bags that might last you a few years a piece or you can just spend the money and never have to buy another.
I haven’t thought much about Ebay! I should, especially for the journeyman backpack. I’ve been looking for one for ages and can’t quite pull the trigger on a new one!

Carl Murawski I have hard data that the RuggedTwill line, with the original briefcase being among the first of the luggage line was released in 1992 according to a Filson timeline advertised in an older catalog. On my forum, which is the longest running Filson discussion on the Internet, we have a member who has stated his original briefcase was bought in the 1980s. This backs up the timeline stating Stanley Kohl’s “re-released” the line in 1992.

I have the Medium Field Bag, the Large Duffle and the Rucksack. For an American company, the shoulder straps on the Rucksack is too short for me. I'm not the largest American male and it this "All American" company can't afford to add a few more inches of material for the shoulder straps, it is telling. Other American made, American "styled" brands give me plenty of length so I have no issues with their backpacks.
