Amazing transformation from rust to bear metal. Lots of work coming for the next guy to get it back in shape and paint. But it would have taken a long time with a grinder and missing a lot as well. When you get done it's clean slate for starting the repair and paint. Great job and good luck fixing the issues with your equipment soon.
Bit of an update on the boat for everyone, after Mick had blasted the hull sides it uncovered a world of damage/pitting that was covered up by the bitumen blacking done by the previous owner, the boat is currently still in the boatyard having a full overplate bottom and sides.
@@Mobileblaster I could see where the cut some off, but down the length of the boat the pitting was quite bad. Unsure of they effective range of an anode, maybe 6ft either side? A 40ft boat would be best with maybe 6 anodes and maybe some under the base plate also (depending on the depth of the stretch of canal they frequent)
@DEmma1972 the boat I'm doing today has loads and and this boat is in really good shape not sure if it's because of the anodes or because it's the 3rd time blasting he has it blasted and painted then after 4 or 5 year pulls it out pressure washed and blacked then the next time is blasting and the cycle continues it's a really clean boat the video will be up in a week or so 👌👍
@@Mobileblaster getting it blasted and adding anodes after the hull is badly damaged slows down the 'rot' but maintaining the boat and looking after it before its needed will keep a boat good a lot longer. The fact the owner has lots of anodes shows they are aware of the benefits and maybe have more money to throw at keeping the boat up to scratch.
@DEmma1972 he said it was 14 year old and I would say its been in the water about 2 to 4 year its in really good shape I think my gopro has messed up I've just tried to download the footage and it's not looking promising I can make a video 😒 I will try at the weekend to see what I can do with it 🫣 I've lost 5 or 6 jobs this last few weeks I'm losing faith in gopro
Hey ya Mick, i notice in some of your vids that there looks like a blue like a light or flame is at the tip of the blasting nozzle i noticed it a few times and wondered what that is. like a light blue tinge.?? i was thinking must be the girt and possibly very minute ammount of moisture??
Yeah any blue tint to the air flow is water some is acceptable but too much will make the media stop flowing I can counter it by turning the media up but some jobs don't require it 👍
I put a DC fan on one side of a cooler and a blower on the other and the air flow was close to a 3 phase fan set performance. The big thing is that sucking fans use less power and shift more air. Blowing fans when really close to the fins block the fins in front of the hub, so they need to be spaced off with a fan cowel. We sold some with gast air motors working the fan. They went to Libya and were oil less motors. I hope that helps :o)
Yeah I think my next project will be build a shroud to utilise all the rad. Would be nice to find a 16" fan 12 or 24v is an option compressor is 24v but I can tap from 1 battery I may use the 2 little ones on the cooler under the compressor and start fresh on the big cooler 👌👍
I’ve seen about the same coating on dump trucks here in the US. Like a rubberized coating that’s hardened over the years and becomes hard as hell to get off. Lots of pots
Just come across your channel m8 watching here from scotland loving it even tho ive never coma across sand blasting is it a trade or semi skilled thing superb looks hard graft man 🏴👌 oh is there white finger problems in usage of the blaster
Hi and welcome to the channel 😀 yeah anyone can do it but doing it good or right is a different story alot of damage can be caused very fast it looks alot easier than the videos make out 👌👍 yeah lots of Health risks involved
You need a bigger single fan and it should have a shroud,a real one.(extremely important for air flow) Shrouds should cover the whole exchanger surface area,so the air flow will cover the whole exchanger. Right now you just move air on the fand blwdes surface area, wich is really insufficient. You will have way better results than right now ,You also need to open a door when they work otherwise they can't move air from in to out or vice versa. 1990’s Volvo 740, 850 or 950 sedan or wagon have a huge air volume moving fan. They are two speeds and you just need a 12V relay with a big fuse to feed it.
Yeah ideally that's what I want something custom made as the compressor door is very close. I normally run with the back doors open its got quite alot of room in the back to blow into its 20ft x 8ft x 10ft area the compressor is good at expelling its own hot air it doesn't seam to get hot in the back but we haven't had any hot weather just yet so time will tell 👌👍
@darrenfarrell-bn2cb A lot of people believe the base doesn't need as much attention, me included yeah it's steel and yeah it's going to spend years in water but that steel is usually 10+mm thick and the sides are normally 4+mm. The sides are bobbing in and out rubbing against stuff getting diesel wastewater from other boats and a load of other contaminating things attacking the paint and steel the bases I've done in the past haven't been scale or beyond surface rust
Hey Mick, would love to know what kind of a time frame is required for these long boats and the heavy equipment you blast periodically. Love the videos, much admiration from Niagara Falls, Canada. 🇨🇦
Yeah that's part of my deal with the Dock owner I leave that to them offering a blasting service or I can offer blasting and clean up but the clean up cost they tend to want to do this as its something anyone with a brush can sort out 👌👍
Put the rediator or radiators on the roof of truck plenty of room and out of the way and put some sort of cover you can open and close from down below make sure they blow out not in less messy when you have to clean I have one suggestion maybe a garage door some type that won't leak 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I remember years ago a technique used on full sized ships that used a spray gun that shot out a blue flame and had a built in hopper with Zinc granules that dropped into the flame and shot the melted liquid zinc onto the ships hull. Is this available and viable for canal boats? Or how about a good few coast of zinc paint such as Kurust or what the pylon men use to paint UK pylons every twenty years or so.
Yeah its still available but technology has moved on since they can do a powder coat finish with flame and it sets like plastic (very similar to powder coating) I once looked into it and the insurance needed wasn't worth investment can ya imagine me with a flame thrower I know alot of stuff would be ash 😏
Today they mostly use electric arch instead of gas burners and aluminium/zink treads are automatically feed into the “gun” and it’s blown on the surface with air. A very durable surface against mechanical hits,

Just to clear a few things up on this one, the boat is mine, i bought it last year in October, it had a full pre purchase survey before i bought it which the surveyor passed with flying colours, hes since been back to inspect it after shot blasting and changed his mind, i didnt get the bottom done because i didnt ask if it was included in the quote price so it was my fault really, to be honest if I'd have had the bottom done the bottom and sides would have probably fallen off 🤣, yes it could do with a few extra anodes, yes i think the rudder is bent aswell, any other questions about the boat im happy to answer, its first time ive seen the shotblasting being done and he's done a top job,
I'm unsure if the rudder was bent or not because it moves free and the steering thing site as it should 😊 this one tuck me off guard I wasn't expecting the scale to be all the way down normally its around 4 to 5" on the water line oh well we got their in the end have you any photos of it painted? Even though it appears to be a smaller boat, it seems like it took just as long or longer to blast due to the amount of scale!
